Great win.

I heard that the game was not a sell-out. I'm surprised. BYU is playing winning basketball - Utah is playing winning basketball - Rivalry - Records on the line - etc. Those of us not living in Utah sit in our cars and listen to the game on KSL. People think we're crazy and I guess we are, but that's what we have to do to get BYU sports. I guess I'm just a little disappointed that a game like this wouldn't be a sell-out.
RSH | 1:02 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Good insight, but let's remember BYU still has two very difficult conference road games remaining at "The Pit" in New Mexico and against a San Diego State team that is long and athletic. Not to mention how the Cougars will find a way to win the conference tournament on UNLV's home court in hopes of grabbing a more favorable NCAA Tournament seed than last year. Time shall tell...
Yo | 1:28 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Just remember if you live right on the court and off the court magic happens. No wonder people hate BYU. Provo is a lame city and to answer iliveforfall all the Ute fans were drunk and passed out so they couldnt go to the game.

Who was that refing the game... my home teachers?

BYU had 32 Utah had 10... go figure.
big talker | 1:48 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
My ward team could beat the Cougars.
RE: big talker | 2:55 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Well, if your ward team could beat the Cougars, and the Cougars can beat the Utes... well that just means that your ward would have an easier time beating the Utes now wouldn't it? Not much of an insult if you ask me...
Belgie | 3:13 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Yo - One player on one team made a comment that could be interpreted by malicious people in a way that makes him sound arrogant. You apply it to all of BYU for the next 10 years. You're the reason cougar fans hate Utah.

BYU is currently dominant in both basketball and football. You can hate them all you want. Doesn't change the W/L totals.
Conejo | 3:31 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Yo, it wouldn't matter to you what a BYU player did or said. You hated them before they said it and will hate them long after. You will search for anything and everything to mock and deride BYU. The only thing you won't mention is the score, which of course is WHY THEY PLAY THE GAME! Your comments are insignificant, childish, and only serve to demonstrate you have been and always will be rooting for the LOSING SIDE.
Y fan | 4:05 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
All I know is that is 4 straight wins for the Y and after each one there has been a new set of excuses for the Utes and their fans. I'm just wondering what the excuse will be next time?? Aren't you running out of them already? Perhaps it's just that currently the Y has a better team!
Bob | 4:13 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Come on Brad. Studies have shown that greater TV exposure actually increases attendance. The TV watching customer and the live event attending customer are different customers. Stop pushing the old "more games on TV hurt attendance" adage. It's just not true.
Foreign Hack Squad | 4:47 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Free throw disparity. Could be because all those clumsy foreign-born players that Utah has can't play a lick of defense. Not their fault. Most foreign players aren't taught defense in their homelands. Look at the NBA and the all defense team.
Jonny Canuk | 5:08 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
As to the difference in foul shots, did anyone think that was part of the Ute's game plan. They started by hacking Trent from the beginning and played for the hand check steal whenever possible. The Utes still got off 10 more shots from the field and if they had made a few more of them with a few less give aways then the foul shooting wouldn't matter. I believe the Cougars took at least 8 foul shots in the last two minutes so I would say that is also part of the Utes game plan, it just didn't quite work. As with all good games it came down to the last few plays and the Cougars made the foul shots and the Utes missed the needed treys. Too Bad So Sad.
Fairly Called Game | 5:18 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Go gigure? Okay. Utah needs to learn to play defense without fouling. There, that was easy.
ma`at | 5:33 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
My ward team could beat the Utes. My home-teachers could beat the Utes.

Let the bitter Ute-fan complaints about the refs and the whiny excuses begin!
Barry | 5:43 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
big talker..... go cry somewhere else!!
great game | 6:13 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
What a great game. We can only listen as well and we are only 200 miles from Salt Lake. On the weekend without travel and next day commitments I would hope the arena would sell out for the quality of game they played tonight. It could have gone as most good games do - either way right to the end.
Oh no | 6:24 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
the ute fan isn't complaining about reffing are they? No they would never do that, especially after all the lectures they given BYU fans.

Oh Oh, here comes the LDS rips too. Poor pathetic losers!
Wyo Cougar Fan | 6:24 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
GO COUGARS!
Barry | 6:29 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
big talker...I am not so sure... you are right... Utah played like your ward team. 18 year old minds in 50 year old bodies.
gocats! | 6:32 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
getting homered is part of the game fans scream about when they are the visiting team but accept without question when they are the home team.
funny --byu says game was sold out but there were empty seats--a lot according to utah whiners crying in their beer .
could it be that byu sold out their alloted tickets section and the UTAH fans didn't support their team?
byu got homered at u of u but won anyway.
utah lost becasue they missed clutch plays and made boneheaded passes with the game on the line
one team has to loose guys -face it There are no ties in basketball
Question who has won more games this season at home AND on the road? !maybe home teams play better because they get better support at home. ANYone who knows basketball knows that the mental game is as critical as physical talent and confidence is as important as well trained muscles when you are shooting!! Fans who support their chosen team help their team win. Fans who don't help their team LOOSE!!!! GO COUGARS!!!
Rise and Shout | 7:13 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
One of my favorite things about the Ute fans on these boards is how they are always slamming BYU, such as the comment about the ward team. If you are saying that about BYU, what is it saying about the Utes, who BYU is obviously better than? Nice reasoning!
Boise Fan | 7:30 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
For once we actually got the game on TV here in Boise(the mighty? MTN channel on cable). It was a good one to watch and the better team definately won.

I do have two questions though:

1)Did somebody forget to give Coach Boylen his Ritalin injection before the game? His arm swinging, ranting and raving metabolism could sure use a "tone down".

and

2)gocats! (above post) Certainly you've taken spelling and grammer classes before, right?
Chicago Coug | 7:40 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Couldn't watch the game because.....oh, that's right, it was on the mtn! Great win anyways, Cougs! I am worried about our trip to the Pit but let's keep it rolling boys.
Pukes | 7:44 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
HA HA, Pukes lose again, how fun was the ride home last night on your short yellow bus, same bus you take each day to school.
Is there.... | 7:45 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
anything better then a crying Ute fan?? Hahhaa...love it!

Want some cheese with that whine?

For those of us who have no problem with Austin Collie's comment, keeping it out there makes it seem that he was corresct in his assessment.

During the Majerus Years, I was able to work his basketball camps, visit his practices, get to know him and his coaches, and they were a poster child for doing things in a way to bring success on and off the court. Just look at the players he put in the NBA.

I remember one of his camps, he had a kid going into his Junior year in highschool who worked early in the mornings, and stayed late after working on his game. The last day of camp, Coach asked him if anyone was recruiting him, and he said "No".

Majerus told him to go to his office and tell his secretary to let him call his parents, and tell them that he wanted to offer him a scholarship for 5 years to play at the U, based on his work ethic. Michael Doleac did, and had a fine career.

Maybe when you do things right on and off the court, the Lord does look out for you.
USC fan | 7:52 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Cougs-
Don't talk to us about crying or excuses, you guys set the standards not even five years ago when Utah got to the BCS and he sweet sixteen. When you guys get past that one bowl in las vegas, even into the BCS, or you actually win a game in the NCAA tournament, remember what success really is. Until then, no one in the country cares about you.
Congratulations on a legacy of mediocrity.
To Gocats... | 8:00 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
... and everyone else who can't spell.

Loose (two O's) is the opposite of tight.
Lose (one O) is the opposite of WIN.
Just like the good ole days... | 8:02 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Conference champs in football, basketball, and all the "other" sports that no one cares about, sorry Yewt fans the tables have turned!
Stop Please! | 8:03 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
"Can you imagine the cougs winning without their leader austin from last year?"

Stop kissing up media man, his dad isn't gonna get you a gig in bean town! Your stuck in Provo - forever.

Wasnt Austin coming off the bench until 5.0 threw the cuffs on the starting point gaurd?

In these spirited exchanges between college-interested (if not college-educated) fans, let's go over something that will give your posts a little more polish (as in "shoe polish," not "of or from Poland" - the one "l" should lead to a long vowel sound in the first syllable, but in this case, it doesn't. These little touches are important to the way you, and the school you are trying to boost, come across.): There is "loose" and there is "lose." A ball that has escaped from the player's hand is "loose." This may lead his team to "lose" the game. "Loose" ball-handling may "lose" the game. Get it?
GoCats! had a very nice post, with solid game and fan rivalry analysis, but loses (see that word?) 5 points for spelling, and is docked an additional 5 points for putting his misspelled word in all-capital letters. I would have taken another 5 off for lack of capitalization elsewhere in his essay, but maybe GoCats! is a lover of e. e. cummings, and I'll never discourage any outside reading - especially poetry.
Overall, then, I gave GoCats! a solid "B" and I hope he will straighten up and spell right (write, wright?).
Hawaiifan | 8:24 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Dear USC fan,

Did you forget that little national championship thing the Cougars won a few years back?
USC | 8:27 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
USC has not been the solid program in basketball or football over the past 15 years.

Let's not start to look at your standards.
LV Cougarfan | 8:32 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Some of you fellow Cougar fans really need to get it through your head that the words "loose" and "lose" are in fact two different words. Every time I read a post with "loose" in it, it makes me feel like some of BYU's fanbase is turning into Poke fans.

I'm unlucky enough to have the MTN and couldn't stand the announcers and camera work as usual. That former Yewt coach they had as a color commentator drove me nuts. James Bates is clueless doing football games, and basketball games just make him look like more of a bafoon. As far as the game goes, BYU's defense still needs some work but has improved significantly over the past month. JT still is a little too trigger happy, but when he's on, he's on! Jimmer hit key shots when they needed the momentum, which was a main reason BYU won. That kid will be a star. Nice game all around, keep it rolling Cougs!
re:USC Fan | 8:34 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Big talk from a USC fan whose basketball team is one loss away from 8th place in the PAC-10. Who lost to mighty Mercer this year.
Anonymous | 8:36 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Utes played tough d and were in it to the end.
Plaisted's free throw shooting is an embarassment.
Thanks Utes | 8:40 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Thanks Utes for your few key wins which allows BYU to be the outright champ. Your last four wins (before the loss to BYU last night) really clinched it for us. You guys are real pals.
Good Times | 8:41 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Two wins in a row in football, four in a row in basketball. It is a great time to be a BYU fan.
Anti USC Fan | 8:53 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Been There. Done That. You plagerized my arguement I made back in the 80's, however the roles were reversed. BYU won a National Football Championship. BYU was winning games in the NCAA Tourney. I'm glad that beginning in the 80's, BYU was able to build sports in the state of Utah up to the point it is. Utah, USU, Snow, Dixie, SUU, etc have BYU to thank for what they currently enjoy.
Anonymous | 8:51 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
The reason for the non-sellout was that there were things on campus that students had to be at for grades in their classes. Way for labs, etc to be scheduled the night of the rivalry game.
TO: Boise Fan | 8:57 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
It always kills me when someone feels the need to correct other people's spelling in these posts. Get over yourself! However, if you're going to do it, you probably should know what you're talking about yourself. In this case, "Grammer" is probably a nickname for your grandmother. I believe "Grammar" is what you were intending to say. Before you lecture others, you probably should know what you're talking about yourself...
SALMON RUN | 9:03 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Here we go again. Nothing but fouls the last 2-3 minutes of the game. IT IS TIME FOR A RULE CHANGE.
I suggest they change the rules so that for the last 2 minutes of a game the shot clock be set at 25 seconds to prevent stalling and that the fouled team gets the ball out of bounds after the free throw, to prevent the foul. That would keep the game interesting instead of the boring foul and free throw at the end of the game
To: USC fan | 9:14 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
First of all, this article is about the basketball game. Yewt fans always bring up the BCS game. That is always the response to a loss to BYU. Who cares what Utah used to do. BYU is winning now and that is all that matters. And you're right, the Las Vegas bowl may not be a very prestigious bowl game. But you guys can keep going to your poinsetta bowls while the Cougars shoot for BCS.
James F | 9:23 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
I remember 1979 when Ainge and the boys beat the Russian National Team.
There was some noise... I think my ears are still ringing...
andrewute1 | 9:26 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Just to let you byu fans know, i think it is so funny how all the byu fans are saying we are back. YOU BARELY BEAT US TWICE AND UTAH IS REBUILDING! Talk to me when you kill us when we are a good team again. Utah will be a 25 game team from here on out. By the way, UTAH FOOTBALL WILL BE IN A BCS GAME NEXT YEAR! BOOM!

GO UTES!!
Helmsdeep(81) | 9:32 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Love your comments Ute fans...in fact I find them quite refreshing. Why you might ask??? Because it is an obvious sign, just like the first signs of spring. All is in order. Season following season and the Cats have the Utes on the run.

......Roll Cougars......
One and done | 9:39 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
BYU, just try to win one NCAA tournament game. Even Weber State and Utah State have fared better in the past 15 years.
Cummard | 9:35 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Come on Lee, "funnest" is not a word.

Of course BYU had more free throws. Utah guards with exception of Borha and JB were panniewastes. They always backed out the dribble when they had a clear lane to the hoop. Too tenative Utes. Enjoy your day in the sun cougars. It will soon end.
Do BYU Fans have class? | 9:36 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
The better team won last night. Lets all enjoy the victory and success thus far while keeping focused on going further this year. I don't think gloating, bashing or otherwise rubbing the Utes' noses in the loss shows that you have any class, that you cheer for a church school or that you can win with integrity. I don't hear or see any of the Y players acting like braggart idiots after the game. They let the score and their play do the talking. I suggest we Y fans do the same. It was a good game; the Utes played good, the Y better and won. Yeah! Y fans, remember who you are and who you support and move on to next game with class and integrity like the team is doing.
NOT a top 25 | 10:10 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
BYU is NOT a top 25 team! A top 25 team would beat this Utah team by a much bigger margain. Some of you are saying your ward team could beat Utah; however, BYU only beat Utah by how many points at home? Anyway, it is about time for their heads to get really big. Then BYU will start losing games that they shouldn't.
