bottom line is it is going to take a massive lawsuit to change the landscape of college athletics. there is going to have to be litigation that will shake the very foundations of the universities for anything to truly change. until someone has the guts to mount a serious campaign that will force everyone to take notice the MWC and all other meaningless conferences will have to deal with the hand that has been dealt. loose ESPN gain The Mountain who is now under the umbrella of CBS sports and they only care about the BCS conferences. there was a bill of goods that was sold to commissioner Thompson who in turn sold it to the universities. turns out MWC was sold a lemon. breach of contract? fine that plays into the hands of CBS who can dump previous obligations, legally, and add more BCS schools and build value in the brand leaving the MWC in the cold, again, legally. bottom line is there are no answers in this save one. the MWC is meaningless and any school in it is as well, made so by the MWC commissioner, and the individual university presidents. thanks guys!!

So it's a numbers game now. Because 40 homes care about BYU/Utah outside of the state. You still miss the fact that the majority of fans won't pay the extra cost to get CSTV and those that have it don't care about BYU or Utah sports no matter the rivalry. The mtn has issue, but keeping the best games in the sport on the network and not forcing in-state fans to spend more money to see the game is a wise choice.

Haven't you people figured it out yet? Who is putting together the lawsuit against the mtn? BYU & UTAH

MWC football and basketball is like professional boxing. No one has access to watch the games, so over time you have less and less interest in the event. Living in Utah I use to love to watch these teams play, the first year it was hard not watching them play, but since I cannot watch the games I have grown less interested in my favorate teams, and end up watching the Jazz more.

People that live in markets where the mtn. is available (i.e. most of Utah) but aren't willing to switch to Comcast don't have the right to complain (so what if it's more expensive and of lesser quality than either Dish or DirecTV).

BTW, Comcast is the devil.
CSTV-less | 9:29 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
having missed the game on saturday vs UNLV because I don't have cstv, i am glad that this was on the mtn. The CSTV games kill me. But even with extra programming on the mtn for womens soccer and basketball, i used to see all the games before on espn and local channels.
pissed off fan | 9:27 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Craig Thompson should be fired along with every University President who signed on to this.

What needs to happen is for us fans to sink comcast and the Mtn. The only reason comcast will not sell the rights to DirecTV and Dish Network is it is a big advertising tool for them here in Utah.

This is a call to all BYU and Utah fans dump comcast and kill the Mtn. One of two things would happen. Comcast would quickly do a national deal or the Moutain West would get out of their contract. Please all you idiots that want to watch these poorly broadcast games dump comcast so we can get something better.

Those who do get the mtn channel - don't tune to that channel. 1.4 million compared to over 40 million people on VS or CSTV? WOW - I hope mtn will die and evaporate. How many more years do we have to put up with this mtn? Directv and Dish will never pick that mtn on their channel lineup. Can't believe my wife watch BIG10 women gymnastics on BIG 10 channel. That BIG 10 channel is part of basic package and we have to get Sports Package to pay more $$$$. Well, just hope all goes well when MWC Tournament arrive. Craig Thompson and all the MWC Presidents are bunch of stupid goats. Oh wait, I forgot, is it true that CBS bought CSTV? What will that do to our contract? Good or Bad news?
Non-believer | 9:32 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
You people are yelling at the wrong person!!!!! The presidents of these two universities have the final say. They are saying nothing so obviously they are content with how the games are being handled. They get their money They are not concerned with anything else.I am tired of hearing BYU cry about not being in the top 25. As long as the president of BYU is content with the kind of coverage BYU is getting, it serves BYU right. I think the suggestion that these schools go independent is a great one. The conference would really die. Why beat up on the Aggies. Ask Rose why he would not play them this year!!!!!!!!!!
Stephen | 9:34 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Who is Craig Thompson? An who made him King of Idiocracy?
Inevitable | 9:35 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
You mess with the best (ESPN), you die like the rest. Local coverage with ocassional national exposure was much better than what is going on now. I don't live in Utah anymore. I can't follow any MWC action. A previous poster was correct about the WAC being more visible. I have seen a bunch of WAC games.
O.W. | 9:36 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
I have been a defender of the MWC contract for some time because the revenue is higher and the scheduling is better...ie no 10pm Mnt time tip offs, no weird football schedules, 10:00am,5pm etc. Those are two great reasons to support the Mountain.

But forget about it now. The money and the scheduling are not worth the public relations, public exposure fiasco. Nor is it worth the positive convenience anymore. I say be done with it now. Walk away from the money. I'll go to a 10:00 basketball game on a monday night; I'll go to a 10:00 am football game (when does spring football start??? can't wait anymore!)and for BYU, the donors can easily make up the difference in lost revenue.

How many of us have written to CSTV or Versus today?
Craig Thompson today? For that matter, ask yourself when was the last time you wrote to any of them? These postings are insignificant at the end of the day...just read the Aggie posts to verify...but letters to CT, University Presidents, the networks, etc. still do matter. And they will matter tomorrow.
Brian | 9:37 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Good Call Dick. This decision by the larger networks seems indefensible. An earlier comment stated that they probably got more viewers for the movie than they would have for the ball game. Maybe, maybe not, but they have a contract to fulfill. Or were the terms really that vague and poorly understood? All this being said, I agree with those who remember the failings for the ESPN deal, weird and late schedules. The consistency of this season seems a testament to regular scheduling, a success I'd rather safeguard than trade for the gamble of increased national exposure. Whenever we are lucky enough to get out of the current deal, let's keep a more balanced perspective next time rather than pursuing broader exposure at the expense of all else.
SeattleCougarBlue | 9:39 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Thanks again Craig! BYWho? It looks like Craig Thompson has done his job in perfecting Bryant Gumbel's statement about BYU after their football national championship. I still love the cougars, but since they aren't available here in the Pacific Northwest, it's becoming much easier to become a sports fan of the PAC-10.

It looks like the Cougars can't get out of the contract with the MWC/mtn and the MWC isn't going to get rid of Craig Thompson. I would love to see BYU and Utah leave the MWC (The WAC would take them back in a minute) and let the MWC and Craig Thompson crash and burn. If BYU and Utah left the conference, the MWC would be dead after the first year without them. The original conference teams could form a new conference, get a TV contract with ESPN or Fox and start rebuilding. It's either that, or let things stay the way they are and watch the conference work it's way down to the level of the Sunbelt Conference. How many Sunbelt games have you watched this year? Who is in the Sunbelt conference. Thanks again Craig. What a great job you're doing???
Idaho Alum | 9:52 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Haven't been able to watch many BYU sports even here in eastern Idaho, a strong base of Cougar alumni and support. The current TV deal is rotten.
Coug Blue in TF | 9:48 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Dick must have satellite or direct TV. Thank heaven the game was on the MTN or I would not have got to see it. I get angry every time VERSUS or CSTV does take the games. To me the solution is not to dump the MTN. The solution is to somehow persuade the idiots who control the programming to give us what we want to see, i.e., get CSTV and VERSUS on cable and get MTN on sattelite and direct. As bad as it is, I get to see more games now than when ESPN had the contract.
vs, cstv mad at byu | 9:53 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
You all remember when byu played michigan st at the ESA? Well because it was a neutral site byu brought in thier own broadcasting team and aired it nationally on thier own channels. I believe it was vs. that showed up to broadcast it as well and when they found out byu was also doing it nationally they packed up and left without ever setting up or anything. Mad a byu and having the broadcasting rights to do what they wanted they played hardball and kept a great game away from a national audience to spite byu. The talking heads from the 3 networks probably planned this blackout/revenge the moment the michigan st game started airing on byu channels back in Dec. Now a good question will be what will byu do the next time they have a neutral court to play on knowing the consequences of thier actions. To broadcast or not to broadcast. Now that the revenge has been served. LET'S MOVE ON AND SHOW US SOME GAMES WE CAN WATCH!
Boycot the MWC! | 9:55 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
All of the countless phone calls to dish network and directv have done nothing. I think it is time for fans take a different apporach. Perhaps if the fan base stops attending games in person, the MWC would take notice. This conference has turned into a complete joke!
Mack | 10:05 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
A repeat of a dog show, or whatever it was they were running, sounds more interesting than watching two worthless basketball teams.
myself | 10:04 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Once had BYU season tickets. Now no tickets, no television, no care.
Train | 10:06 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
CSTV is ridiculous. Back in the day I made hundreds of phone calls to Dish Network encouraging them to pick up CSTV, knowing that BYU had this CSTV deal, well they got CSTV, I got CSTV, but then they create the .mtn, and it only gives me two Cougar Games?

Then, to slap insult to injury, CSTV plays the most pathetic sports lineup ever, and the national sports shows don't even mention the Mountain West Conference.

I still faithfully follow my Cougars thanks to KSL, but listening to a basketball game on the radio is PAINFUL. Road games make radio listening even worse; you hear the crowd cheer, know something went bad but don't know what it was, and then Greg Wruebell tells you the opponents just stole the ball and scored. The absolute most painful is road games that are close. If I die of a heart attack it will be from listening to a road game on the radio.... Atleast this BYU - Utah Game was a home game.

O how I relish the days when I had freedom to watch nearly every BYU game on ESPN Gameplan. And that was while living in Arizona.
ajarizona | 10:23 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
First comes anger, two years worth, then resignation.

Now it's just apathy.
once apathy sets in with the fans, it's over. I could'nt even care less about the argument anymore.

Fact is: Holmoe, and the boys won't do anything about it. They could drop this nightmare tomorrow, and win in the courts, but they will not.

This has been a breached contract since the day Checkets and CSTV created the Mountain and then sold off to Viacom, CBS, and Comcast, in order to fund his RSL and ST. Louis Blues purchases. Checketts even dealt with George Soros for his ventures. A complete sell-out, The fix was is in.

There is less National exposure for our teams than there was in the seventies. BYU will never have another All American or anyone else with National Awards. Even those being drafted in the NFL is down to nothing. Two 11 and 2 years with only one or two drated into the NFL?

The BCS smacked us around and damaged the product but this TV deal and the naivete of Holmoe and the boys struck the fatal blow.

The product is dead and most people I know just don't care anymore.

I couldn't believe the best game/rivalry in the conference was unavailable here in North Carolina. Thanks, Dick. You took the words right out of my mouth. Can BYU-TV trump the mtn? (Is that how the Michigan State game got on BYU-TV?)
AZ Ute | 10:29 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
When are we going to see a solution to this mess? For the U and Y to allow this to continue is an embarrassment. Someone has got to stand up and force a resolution. The Mtn. is irrelevant and unknown in most of the west, not to mention the rest of the nation. Everyone I know would rather see Utah and BYU basketball at 10:00 pm on ESPN than not at all. Thursday night football on ESPN was also better than watching Goldie on Versus. Someone do something!!!! It is time for the athletic directors and university presidents to get something done now!
ron | 10:24 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Hey dick, is there a chance the air force game can get televised? byu-tv used to pick up these games. Have they been cut off from doing it any more, or they just don't want to do it?(money?) I still have to complain also, once again, about having to have the play-offs on a home court rather than a neutral one!! It is still not fair to the young men. HELP!!
Jax | 10:34 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
When was the last time USU played A football game on national TV. If you exclude their two bowl Games in the last 30 years. The answer is never, Aggie are so jealous of the Cougs and Utes, they will always be the little brother wanting to play with their big brother,

The Aggies also claim that both BYU and Utah don't respect them, When was the last time USU did not turn their nose up to Weber State.

Boycott the Mtn. | 10:29 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
This is a joke. I say just show the games on KSL like they did back in the day.

Craig Thompson is giving incompetence a bad name and he should be fired. He does not represent the MWC.

Someone needs to go. Have they stopped trying?
Anonymous | 11:00 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Wow, we can watch a High School game on ch14 but no BYU/Utah.
Nevada Fan | 11:12 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Any TV programming is advertisement driven. The only way that a change will take place is if the advertisers stop supporting the channel. The best thing to do would be to have someone that has the Mtn let the rest of us know who the advertisers are that are supporting the channel and then all of us boycott those advertisers. That is the only way to really pressure Comcast into negotiating with the satellite companies.
Lame TV | 11:16 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Total sellout by all the schools in the Mt West. But, the schools were sold on promises made by the .mtn, CSTV, and VS. I am paying ~$10 extra per month just to pick up the CSTV and VS channels on my DirectTV.

To consistently see that they are only running re-runs and regional stuff that I have no interest in makes me think I will cancel.

At what point does BYU/Utah and other interested parties retain an attorney and drop their arrangements with CSTV/VS/and the .MTN
andrejules | 11:20 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Although TV coverage would be nice, sitting here in Champaign, Illinois, I was able to listen to a very familiar voice call the BYU/Utah game on BYU-Radio, which I get as part of my Dish satellite network, along with BYU-TV. You know, after seeing some of the games on CSTV, I think I prefer listening on radio. Before we got the Dish, I used to always listen on my computer.

Someone mentioned sitting with their father in the car in the winter listening to BYU games over KSL radio years ago. Was that one of my sons? I used to drive from Quincy, IL into Missouri because the signal came in better from a thosand miles away..
Tarheel Ute | 11:53 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Whenever I see something a unreasonable, unfair and blatantly wrong such as the MWC MTN agreement, I have to think there is more to the story. Why does this disservice to MWC fans everywhere continue? Who is gaining by the current contract certainly not fans.

This article, while I agree with it 100%, is just another rant. Nothing new, nothing to be gained.

What is the real story Dick? Do some investigative journalism. Why does Thompson, the University ADs, Presidents and coaches allow this to continue? Money? I hope not. But this is what I would like to know, rather than to restate the obvious - that is - that fans hate the current contract and not seeing their teams. Interview the primary players put them on the spot. Give them the opportunity to respond to MWC fans.

St Louis Coug | 11:57 a.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Great article. I can't believe Versus or CSTV wouldn't jump on this opportunity.

The MWC is heading down a disasterous course of obscurity. Already the Horizon and MVC seem to be getting more buzz than the MWC. And the WCC has been doing better for years.

The only thing that can change all this is for 2 MWC teams to make the tournament and both to get to the sweet 16.
Blue is Best | 12:36 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Okay,

Nobody cares!

If they did...

1. Craig Thompson would be LONG GONE.

2. Tom Holmoe has no support or courage to do something about this.

3. Break the contract. Sue over breach on the part of the MNT. At least "try".

4. Nobody with any real say cares. Otherwise, they'd be out of this deal, or atleast throwing these games on KBYU, let the Mountain do what they want afterward.

5. Do what is best for the conference and the school and players...jump ship on the mountain, which should be named "The Little Nib." Never has a name been so ironic.
Mike R. | 12:57 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Bateman presided over the near demise of BYU sports including the current TV mess.

All of us fans should band together and force a class action law suit in federal court for anti-trust violations and get the contract voided.

If I was the Utah or BYU President, I'd say to heck with the contract and negotiate my own. Let them sue.
Arizona Ute | 12:55 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
It was a painful realization last night when I could not find the game on CSTV, VS or anything else. If ESPN had the TV rights, I guarantee this game would have been televised on one of their networks. When the Mountain West was covered by ESPN even though our start times were different and a little inconvenient, the Network did a good job of selling the conference and the programs. Now we get Wildcats, a horrible Goldie Hawn movie. Great Move Commissioner
Former Ute | 1:11 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
As much as it pains me to do it, I agree with Dick Harmon about something! The MWC pretends it has big-time sports teams, when it is nothing more than an afterthought nationally. Now even former fans of MWC teams don't pay attention. It's not surprising that the game was not packed with fans. WHO CARES ABOUT THE MWC ANY MORE? I'm watching the PAC-10, the SEC, the Big 10 and other MAJOR CONFERENCES on DirecTV. After the way we have been treated by "The MTN." [the silliest name ever] I wouldn't watch the MWC unless nothing else was on.
how much longer..... | 1:12 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
I agree Thompson should be fired.

I think the next big media contract they need to work on is putting a deal together with PCTV (Park City TV) for a couple of reasons. They reach a broader audience - more people would be able to see the games than can on the Mtn. Also, the high school kids that they have working the camera's could do a better job than the trained monkeys that the Mtn has on it's payroll - how many times last night would they show a close up on some fans elbow while there was action on the court... it's good thing neither team threw a lot of head fakes because who knows where the cameras would take us then.
Anonymous | 1:28 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
The MWC is solely responsible for this. PERIOD. They should tell the Mountain, CSTV and VS. to kiss their royal tennebutts and let them sue them for the breach of contract, cut their ties and crawl back to espn. PERIOD. I'm so sick of this discussion, I'm so sick of the rhetoric and BS , I'm so sick of hearing how it seemed like a good deal. IT isn't. The schools have the product, they should use that leverage and use it now. MWC chief should not only be fired but held accountable to all of the schools for this ridiculous contract with the mtn. What's next, Ut.vs. byu football not on. Probably. And when that happens, we will still have to listen to all the talk and rhetoric. It's sickening. No wonder the SEC is so great. I get more ACC, SEC and Big 12 games at my house than MWC and WAC games. GO figure.
Stymus | 2:16 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
The Goldie Hawn movie was a rerun too!
True? | 3:49 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
I'm hearing reports that the mtn is nearing a deal with direct tv. Has anyone heard this at all? I read it on CougarBoard, but need some sort of independent, trustworthy source to confirm the news. And since all you posters are so trustworthy, I thought I'd give this a chance.
Ash | 4:08 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Wow! I just heard that the mtn will be on Directv in August. Finally!!!

Too bad their production quality is the WORST in all of sports. There are high school games with better camera work and announcers. I hope with the new deal, they can afford to actually hire people to work for them, rather than getting homeless people and transients to do the camera work and be the on-air talent.
Ash | 4:13 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Doesn't the mtn network have first right of refusal? If I were the mtn and had the choice whether to show the game or not, I would definitely do it.

I don't know though, I can't see CSTV or VS bypassing this game if they really could have had the rights to it.
Top Gun | 4:38 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
The Mtn on Directv? If you use Cougarboard as your source of news you probably think the PAC 10 is drooling at the prospect of getting both BYU and Utah in a package deal.

The rumor about the mtn on directv, dish, or comcast nationwide is over a year old.
Direct Tv | 4:47 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
For those who are stating that the Mtn is going to be on Direct tv, I would love to see some official announcement. I would love this to be true as a subscriber (I refuse to give Comcast one penny for this mess). I would just like to know where I can see this as being official and not Elder's Quorum gossip.
Thanks, let's hope that it's true.
tony j | 7:24 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
It is really sad how many people and BYU fans like myself don't get to watch a lot of the games like last nights BYU-Utah game because of the decision to go with the MTN and Versus etc. I live in southern New Mexico and if it wasn't for BYU radio we wouldn't even know what's going on. Let's get this fixed please!!
Fan in Colorado | 7:26 p.m. Feb. 21, 2008
Yes, I had to listen to the game on the Internet. I did check VS and CSTV because I thought for sure this game would be televised. Sorry! I have lived in Colorado for 10 years now and until the Mtn. was started at least I saw maybe half of BYU's games because two of the teams in the MWC are based in CO and New Mexico games were sometimes shown too. Now I get maybe one game a season?! That equals less coverage not more. I see more of the game highlights on the local news stations than I do on ESPN so why go there. I keep begging DirecTV to make a deal with Comcast and now it might actually happen. It was hard to get excited about college sports this year knowing I was able not able to see hardly any games. Leadership somewhere would be nice.
