This issue with Buttars is more than his comment. It is based on his track record, especially the SLC registry issue.
My issue is that the registry effects only the citizens of SLC as enacted by their elected officals.
It is more than a Gay issue. It's about people that care for their aging parents, their disabled adult children.
It doesn't mandate that insurers provide anything. It merely makes it easier for those that would provide these benefits to ensure that they weren't being scammed by nare-do-wells.
I have a problem with the state politicians stepping into local issues. It's not an agenda. If other cities pass similar laws it will be by the consent of the citizens of THAT community.
I admit I no longer live in Utah but, my school age children do. I do not want them to learn bigotry and discrimination from the people elected to support and defend the constitution. I want them to learn the teaching of love and compassion from Jesus.
Thank you for listening
The fact that the NAACP set a trap for Buttars seems to go unnoticed. We all need to move on- Buttars will run again and we'll see what West Jordan thinks. I have a new opinion of the NAACP, though. They are out of control, and completely nuts. That's what the definition of an embarrassment to Utah is for me.
What words ARE we allowed to use?
"At least one individual was at the Capitol Wednesday to show support for Buttars, wearing a pro-Buttars t-shirt.
Gayle Ruzicka, president of the Utah Eagle Forum, said Wednesday she's cancelled a planned rally to support Buttars because it's no longer needed."
LOL... It was canceled because Gayle Ruzicka is the only one supporting this chuckle head! She couldn't find anyone else to show up!
Moving On,
How about using words not based on emotions.
"a dark ugly thing", Is that a way to speak about legislation? How about being clear concise. Try saying "this bill is poor legislation not in the best interest of the Citizens of Utah"?
Emotionally charged words are indicative of emotionally charged laws. The framers of the Constituion wanted to avoid that!
Thanks for listening
The NAACP is over-reacting to absolutely nothing. Do they think they have a license on the word black?? I can't see where the comment was racist in any way. I for one am pretty sick of the constant whining of the NAACP. They major in victimization, and unfortunately, some people are buying into it. Get over yourselves. You're over the top with this silliness. There's no conspiracy here. Just get on with your lives and let's get along.
My good friend just adopted a little African-American girl. I would like YOU to look my friend in the face, repeat what Buttars said, and see how he responds. Then maybe you'll find out (and in a rather painful, perhaps bloody way) what you consider "absolutely nothing" means to some people.
There is no place for the kind of comment made by Butters in the public forum. It's not his first and it won't be the last. He should not be doing it on our dime. I don't care what he says in the privacy of his own home, I don't care what he thinks, but in the state legislature he is speaking for us whether he likes it or not. I am tired of his carelessness. He is no better than Senator Craig from ID.
QUIT, QUIT, QUIT, QUIT!!!!
Lets talk about City Government (Rocky Anderson) stepping into State Government(Legacy Highway). Now that was a mess that cost this state MILLIONS!
As a constituant of Buttars, I am completely embarrassed to be represented by a person like him. What he said was totally unacceptable. And this is not a one time thing. Buttars has a track record of not only statements such as these, but even more importantly, it shows a pattern of thought of a man who should not be in the position that he's in. Get him out of office and get him out NOW. I'm not a member of NAACP, but I sincerely appreciate Ms. Williams taking up this very worthy cause.
The NAACP majors in victimization? Give me a break, and try to put yourself in their shoes.
I'm sure Buttars doesn't think he's a racist, but that is beside the point. The point is, what he said is absolutely insensitive. And yes, it is for the black community to decide what they think is and isn't sensitive. Just like it's for the LDS community (and I am LDS) to decide what they think is insensitive.
I'm not talking about some crusade for political correctness. It's called RESPECT.
Maybe the NAACP would quit "whining" if people actually were sensitive to what they're trying to say.
Problem Goes Both Ways,
That is a strawman arguement. The city can not legislate the state. It's a one way street going downhill.
Rocky lobbyied, it was the state that enacted the legislatation.
Also, how is your comment germane to the issue being discussed?
Game Over!! let it die. there was no discrimination intent in the comments by Buttars. simple as that. let's move on. there's no difference in his comment from one that would go like this..."that's a white lie". it's a figure of speech. no racial intent meant at all. yet the white folks could get all bent out of shape over it IF they WANTED to. which is exactly what is going on here. folks WANT to be offended just to create a story. similarly we could all get upset over a comment like this one..."it's the pot calling the kettle black". time to spend our valuable time in the legislature on more important things than the misconstrued comments of a good man.
The state caused the mess of the Legacy Highway by illegally proceeding with a project before dotting all the I's and crossing all the T's. Let's remember that.
If Buttars can't speak in front of the press, as he did all day before the planned meeting, what is he trying to hide?
And to whining - stop whining. You are (likely) not affected. How can you tell others what to feel?
Are out in Force!
Wow! I just lost all respect for the Eagle Forum.
I'm dumbfounded that you ever had any respect for the Eagle Forum, but glad to see you've come to your senses.
Gayle Ruzicka! You have to be kidding. Now she is not only speaking to her wild-eyed readers but to the rest of us? She does not speak for me. I hope she bought plenty of pro-buttars shirts - she is going to need them. This issue is not dead - Buttars proposes legislation and votes on issues which affects us all. Don't think there are not many who are ready to take notice. The ranks will grow as more realize what this is really about. Stupidity, bigotry, arrogance. Polarizing is what the Eagle Forum hate paper does best and Ruzicka enjoys herself immensely. Hypocricy supreme.
you hypocrites and free speech phonies are making my life unbearable.
everywhere is go people want to get me fired and try to destroy me.
they say something about being a white dude and how can i have such a name.
please show some tolerance.
As a descendent of LDS pioneers I was deeply offended that the NAACP was so callous and obviously racist in its claim that we do not know what a lynch mob is. My ancestors where pulled out of jail, dragged across state lines and lynched by a mob. My ancestors where massacred (men, women and children). My ancestors had a state government extermination order against them. Now these hate mongers tell me I don't know what a lynch mob is?
I have lost all respect for the racists at the NAACP.
Hey moron above. If you speak out against a religion you are a bigot, not a racist.
Oh, and by the way, have you ever heard of the mountain meadows massacre? Men, woman, children AND babies.
Now go back to the hole you crawled out of.
