I typically shop Smith's/Kroger and had not been able to find Snelgrove's for some time. They had a Canadian Chocolate that I was especailly fond of but I believe Smith's stopped carrying Snelgrove's about last summer or fall. With all the changes, I had assumed that the brand was already out of production. I guess I should have looked harder.

I used to live in the Covey on South Temple and used to get cones at the store on S. Temple and 2nd 2 or 3 times a week.

PLEASE, PLEASE, DO THIS! There are a couple of Snelgrove flavors that are VERY good that need to be kept!

Wow! An institution is passing. I have a lot of fond memories of the Snelgroves on 21st South. I hope Dreyer's keeps at least a few of the more popular Snelgrove flavors around.

I have great memories of Dad taking us kids to Snelgroves on South Temple and getting cones. Often when we're visiting family in SLC, we've purchased Snelgrove ice cream. I sorry to see it disappear.

My husband and I who are now serving a mission will really miss Snelgroves Ice Cream when we return. We loved their Canadian Vanilla and some of their other special flavors. I guess their sales dropped off because we left. :)

I used to work at the Snelgroves on South Temple in 89-90. I will miss them terribly. I have been frustrated for years because I could not find two of my favorites, Caramel Cashew and German Chocolate Cake. Good times for all, and a great date spot. Too bad.

Bart, to each his own. I grew up outside Philly, and Breyer's was the best around. My father-in-law was an ice cream junkie - they always had a freezer full of it. My wife prefers Edy's (the east coast name on Dreyer's), and I tend to agree. There are a few flavors I like better from Breyer's, but in general, Edy's is better (to us).

I enjoyed both brands while living in Utah, but here in Texas, Blue Bell ice cream surpasses anything I've ever tasted before. It's really unbelievable that it's not sold nationwide. People who have never tasted Blue Bell ice cream simply don't know what they're missing out on.

I now live in Virginia, but each time I visit Utah, I make sure to get Snelgrove's Canadian Chocolate and Bear Lake Raspberry.

Sell Snelgroves to a local "get up and go" guy and watch it soar in the local market. A "good" ice cream product" will develop and service an appreciative market. Have you ever seen a BYU coed pass up an ice cream cone or a twinkie? 'nough said!

I have found memories of the 21st South store and plant. As a child when the family would drive 'up north' from from southeastern Utah, a must stop was to see Uncle Laird and Aunt Edna (Snelgrove) then to the Ice Cream palor on 21st. As I attended the U it was a stop on many occasions.

The passing of Snelgrove Ice Cream, for me is losing a family member. I am so pleased the a scholarship will be named in honor of Uncle Laird at the Y, just before his death he graudate with his degree from there.

I will miss buying the carton of Snelgrove Ice Cream, on my next visit to Utah - it was for me a connection to my family and childhood, it brought Uncle Laird alive as I ate my bowl full of Ice Cream.

Thats okay. Ice cream is on the out. Red Mango aithentic yogurt is the new icecream of the west. It is healthy and delicious. Its at fort union and has been open for a couple of days.

Charles Snelgrove donated a case of Snellie Bars (much like a Klondike Bar or Eskimo Pie, but in rough size and shape of a Twinkie), kept cold by a few chunks of dry ice, to the Scouts in his area every time they held a Court of Honor.
There was very little temptation to leave the event early because of the promise, not only of ice cream bars after the benediction, but also of a chance to find a piece of the dry ice and do something cool with it (there was a pun, wasn't there?), like throw it into a puddle, put it in the drinking fountain, or some such scientific experiment.
Charles Snelgrove, Laird Snelgrove, Snellie Bars, Frozen Raspberry Hurricanes, Canadian Chocolate, the rotating Double Cone sign on 21st South - all will be missed...

Snelgoves would have remained successful if they had not changed their 21st South SLC store, from delightful ice cream, sit-at-the-counter triple thick malts, to "soups" as advertised in the front window! I also believe (perhaps wrongly) that Dreyers or Snelgrove changed the ice cream recipies because they started to taste somewhat bland and less rich and flavorful. Ithink they cheapened the product, that is why I stopped buying it. TODAY if I could buy the Snelgove ice cream of the 1960's, I would still do it! And I don't buy Dreyers.

It was the price that kept me from buying it, that and the fact that they never made any low-fat or sugarless varieties. But I always thought Snelgrove's was better than Dryers or Bryers.
They made a flavor called caramel fudge that was to die for.....

And what will happen to the double scoop ice cream cone that has faithfully spun for many, many years in Sugarhouse? It is an icon of Salt Lake City. I agree with many readers, the Burnt Almond Fudge was better then any others that I have tried...and that's a lot! For true ice cream lovers, the best ice cream in Utah is found at the Utah State University Creamery! The Oreo Fudge Ice Cream is out of this world!

I've had Blue Bell Ice Cream, which is very good, but since you cant buy it here Snelgrove was the next best option. Dryers is okay, while I'll pick generic over Bryers anyday!

Back in the day, the Snelgrove on 21st South had a drinking fountain in the middle of the store made out of some black stone, maybe onyx? I thought that was so cool! A trip to SLC wasn't complete without a stop at Snelgrove's. Frozen Raspberry Hurricanes were the best!

Having recently moved back to Utah from the midwest, I have to agree with Gone to Texas. Sorry, Snelgrove, Breyers, Dreyers, and Edy lovers, but none of these (and I have eaten my share of all of them) hold a candle to Blue Bell ice cream. I tried Snelgrove as a replacement for Blue Bell, and was sorely disappointed.

If you all want a real premium ice cream available in your favorite grocery, start petitioning them to carry Blue Bell.

In all fairness, Blue Bell ice cream should carry a warning label that reads: "Warning: Once you have tried this product, no other brand of ice cream will satisfy your expectations."

going to the 21st So. location for ice cream with my

Dryers might be cheaper than Snelgroves, but the quality is not as good in my opinion. I have been eating Snelgrove's for decades and have found the richness of this "Utah's Favorite Brand" is much better than Dryers. I tried their NEW Cherry Chocolate Chip the other day. I found it to be inferior to Smiths Cherry Parfait. I knew Laird Snelgrove. I'm sure he would be unhappy to see this GREAT BRAND of ice cream GO. SOO SAD.

I just hope they don't take down the historical sign on 21st. That thing is a landmark and gives the area character. I had to see the old signs go with the re-building of Sugarhouse. AT LEAST LEAVE THE SIGNS UP!

Personally I don't think that it was the ice cream that made Snelgroves great, but place and memories. I hear so many memories of snelgroves and I wonder if we have lost the skill to make those kinds of memories in our lives today. How often do we make things that can be considered fun or special more routine? How often do we think of treats as just something to be had when ever we have a hankerin' for some? Snelgroves was a treat. Dreyers I can get anytime.

My Favorite ice cream has always been Snelgrove's Burnt Almond Fudge. I have never found a chocolate nut ice cream that was as creamy or more delicious. I hope that they will continue this flavor under the Dreyer's ice cream. I will miss Snelgrove's alot.

Once found a Texan carrying Blue Bell in a cooler on a flight into SLC and wonder what ice cream could be worth hand carrying anywhere.

Blue Bell is worth carrying anywhere it is not sold. Blue Bell sells and Dryers sits.

Having recently moved back to Utah after living int he Mid-West, I have to say that Gone to Texas is right. Having eaten more than my share of all the so called premium ice creams mentioned above, none of them measure up to Blue Bell ice cream.

If you want a replacement for Snelgroves, start petitioning your local grocery store to carry Blue Bell. In all fairness, Blue Bell should include a label on their product that reads something like this: "Warning: After consuming this product, no other ice cream will measure up to your expectations."

The carton of burnt almond fudge now in my freezer brings to an end a reserved place that has been there continuously (except for the mandatory 2 year break 50 years ago) since my childhood more than 60 years ago. My parents bought it, and even my grandchildren, knowing its place in my life, give me a carton for my birthday every year.

Grew up in Colorado. But, Grandparents lived in Utah County and Cache County. Every summer we made the trek to see the extended family. Between Utah County and Cache County we would stop at Temple Square so us kids would remember our heritage. Then, we would almost always stop at Snelgroves on South Temple. While I prefered a Chocolate Malt, my dad always got the Burnt Almond Fudge. Great memories...

I worked at the South Temple store for several years in High School and afterwords. (1984 ish to 1988 ish) I have very fond memories of the place. I will miss Canadian Vanilla Ice Cream, It's far creamier and better tasting than any other vanilla Ice cream out there. Mixed with any flavor you want and it makes a better shake than anything else. I will miss snelgrove's as well. I hope dryers keeps it's flavors. I knew Edna Snelgrove and her sister while growing up. Good People. they are missed.

It is not a surprise to see the demise of the Snelgrove brand. From the time that it was acquireded by Dreyers it has not been the same quality - hence the demise of the brand name. Laird Snelgrove confided to me that the rich wonderful taste of all his ice cream flavors was due to the extra amount of butterfat that he used. Twenty two percent as I recall. The Snelgrove label as manufactured by Dreyers never had that rich taste.

Loved the Green Pineapple and Banana Nut ice creams. Nobody made it taste the same as Snelgrove's. Loved to stop at the Sugarhouse store and get a double scoop on a double cone! We'll miss it.
