He has been quoted as referring to those who are commenting on this issue and asking for his resignation as a "Lynch Mob". Can he say ANYTHING that DOESN'T come across as racist?

Buttars has no duty to grovel at the feet of the NAACP by meeting with Jeanetta Williams. This only lends undeserved credence to Williamss ridiculous hypersensitivities, and gives her another opportunity to beat Buttars over the head with her empty charge. Come on, Williams, put away your magnifying glass, and stop looking for racism where there is none. True racism is wrong. This wasnt it.

So another NAACP PC stance. What a load.

re:Tyler -
"He continually makes racial remarks"

Could you give me some examples here? Please don't quote the Brown vs Board of Education blurb until you know the context of his statement (which he made abundantly clear! - it wasn't a racist statement.)
Get rid of Galye too | 9:17 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
While we are trying to clean the Senate, let's get rid of the Eagle Forum, Utah's answer to the KKK. Gayle keeps touting about Senator Buttars' work at the Boy's Ranch, but can't seem to come up with much more than that. I think a counter rally should be planned at the capital in opposition to Senator Buttars and Grand Wizard Gayle. These people need to go away far and fast!
Moessers | 9:21 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
The said thing is, he probably will be reelected. Because in Utah, people see Republican by a person's name, and they see Democrat. And Hitler could be running on the GOP ticket in Utah, and they would vote for him hands down. Jesus could be a Democrat in Utah and he'd lose.

Now "Lynch Mob" is racist??????

Heaven help us!

Karma, Buttars. Karma.

Chris is the best thing that has happened to the democratic party and this is a fine example of why we need change even here in UTAH.
Spanky | 9:33 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Let's change the Bushism "misspoke" or "misstatement" to a "Buttars". Then these good old Republican boys can say anything they want and then say.....

"I'm so sorry, it was just a "Buttars" on my part. Please forgive me. And oh, by the way, I'm moving on, it's in the past, I'm over it, and am running for re-election."
I WAS about to subscribe | 9:38 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
to the Deseret News...

But I absolutely refuse to do so until it ends the absurd level of reporting on this non-issue.

A guy made a stupid comment. He apologized. It should end there.

Instead, the Utah media - led by the Deseret News and Tribune - has decided to carry water for a truly racist and morally bankrupt organization - the NAACP - and all but called for the resignation of a democratically elected member of the state government.

The NAACP is not elected by the people of Utah. It has not somehow magically acquired the capability to represent us or Buttars' constituents. It is a now irrelevant organization that thrives on blowing entirely out of proportion the accidental comments of others and requires the media to spread its news.

It's time to stop this nonsense. Let the voters decide what is good on this issue.
Pittakos | 9:57 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Wow. If there were a rope around here, the majority of you would be out there stringing the guy up to the nearest tree. I'll bet most of you haven't even listened to what he said in the actual context that it was used. The only racism that I see around here is coming from those of you who are decrying his remarks as racist. The terms that he used are commonly used to describe bad events or circumstances. I'm sure none of you have ever used the term "It's a black day" or something similar to describe a day that'll go down in history as a bad one due to some event.

I am not a Chris Buttars fan but all I'm seeing is a bunch of sheep jumping on a bandwagon brought out by the racist group, the NAACP to vilify someone for a remark that was in no way racist. Your mob mentality is disgusting.

Freedom of speech appears to be a thing of the past. People care more about being politically correct than the First Amendment.

Open Letters | 10:01 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
To the NAACP-
Grow up. The word "black" is not always referring to race. Why don't you target these blaxploitation rap artists who drop a real racial insult every other word in their "songs" and glorify the subjugation of women, criminal activity and gang life. I thought you were for the ADVANCEMENT of colored people...

To Buttars-
You have been a laughingstock long enough. Your constituency is regarded as either Eagle Forum zombies or outright idiots to keep sending you to the Legislature. The only difference between you and Warren Jeffs is that you were elected-otherwise the rest of Utah and America considers the both of you equally delusional and intellectually primitive.

To West Jordan-
You deserve better. Do something about it.
Anonymous | 10:07 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Great. We are stuck with Buttars for another four years, because I have no hope that lazy voters (at least give them credit for actually going to the polls) will elect someone else. Buttars is only meeting with the NAACP to cover his rear end for his re-election campaign. Note to "I WAS": The Deseret Morning News did not create this issue. Buttars did. The DMN, like any good newspapers, is covering the story that Buttars created. Don't blame the DMN.
Defending Traditional Values | 10:05 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
If he means the "traditional values" of homophobia, racism, and bigotry, then mission accomplished. That is exactly what he has defended.
Buttar's- step down | 10:14 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
And step out of the bubble of illusion that you're in, people outside of the Hill don't want you to represent them.
To the people on here that tell people to calm down-
You calm down, you sound as backwards as Buttars.
Unbelievable! | 10:31 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Unbelievable that Butters would be so self-important to himself that he has the audacity to run for office again!

Unbelievable that the Utah Republican party has once again shown its good-ole-boy nature by skirting the issue and not castigating Butters for this and ALL the NUMEROUS prior indiscretions of the past. Just a good-ole-boys club at that!

And it will be absolutely unbelievable if the folk in his district don't sit up and send Butters a commanding mandate by not voting him back into office, for the sake of both the Republican party and more importantly, the moral values our community, the State and the Church are trying to convey to the Nation and World... namely, that we're not a bunch of racist, anti-Black, bigoted bunch of backwoods hicks trying to look like sophisticated citizens of the modern openly democratic society we are supposed to be part and parcel of.

Someone within the Republican party needs to make a primary run for Butters seat NOW! And all the party's loyal needs to see to it that Butter's looses the primary and the new, hopefully more rational and considerate, choice is able to repair the damage to party and the church.
RE: Pittakos | 10:38 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
No, we wouldn't be stringing him up in a tree, we would be writing letters to our Senate Leadership and others.

Re: Grundle... Been outside since the turn of the century much??? The word "Lynch Mob" has taken on a "racist" meaning, especially in the South (there are people who move here from the South who find the term very offensive).

TO: "I WAS about to subscribe": Wouldn't it be nice if there was a local paper that only reported on "piano recitals" and "animal control" issues? Until that paper starts, you're pretty much stuck with a Newspaper printing News... Dang.

Dear NAACP: Please continue your fight to advance the cause of African Americans in this part of the country. Many of these posts sound like they are coming from the backwoods of the South, but I believe you will notice that many sound like intelligent, educated, tolerant individuals who are looking to make Utah a positive place for everyone to raise their children.
Jeff Lebowski | 10:40 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars has brought dishonor to his office and the entire state. The issue is not only the "black ugly baby" comment; it includes his ongoing record of encouraging the marginalization and hatred of those who do not fit his mold of normalcy. I am a diehard Utah County conservative Republican and strongly encourage Senator Buttars to take the high road and resign with dignity. To do otherwise will further tarnish his legacy.
Texan | 10:54 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Mr. Buttars is one of the most embarrassing things to come out of Utah in a long time. If he could possibly get re-elected, his electorate deserve what they get.
Indy Coug | 10:55 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Wake up West Jordan - Buttars' real constituency is the Eagle Forum, Southerland Institute and Howeird Stephenson. He neither cares about nor pays attention to those who elected him. He has displayed unbelieveable arrogance in his attempts to rationalize his comments. Shame on you Chris Buttars for being a poor example to the citizens of Utah.
Please Resign | 11:15 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
You cannot qualify statements like Mr. Buttars made in anything but purely racist terms. Mr. Buttars' pathetic attempts to do just that have voided his apology. No public official in any other state could have kept his job this long.

Does anyone remember the Trent Lott controversy? Can anyone imagine what would have happened to Trent Lott if he had called legislation a "black baby" and a "dark ugly thing"?

Mr. Buttars: You have brought more shame on South Jordan, the Utah State Senate, and the State of Utah than anyone in my lifetime. If you have any sense of personal dignity and honor you will RESIGN NOW!!
Anonymous | 11:16 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
What are West Jordanites to do? vote for a Democrat?

Buttars' reign of hate will continue.
MaryAnn Lush | 11:23 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I honestly worry about my children's future in a state that condones Senator Buttars' despicable behavior. The thinly veiled attempt by Gayle Ruzicka and Paul Mero to save Senator Buttars through newspaper ads, t-shirts and demonstrations is simply a smoke screen. Please, Utah, for the sake of our future, unite to combat evil in all its forms.
Anonymous | 11:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
White Utahns know absolutely nothing about racism. They live here in their caucasian bubble lacking the decency and self-respect to admit that an elected politician continues to utter insensitive remarks with crystal-clear racist and homophobic undertones.

RESIGN, BUTTARS, RESIGN!! You embarrass this entire state.
Argentina | 11:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Don't cry for Chris Buttars. He is enjoying and loving all the attention he is getting.
Remay1 | 11:45 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars is neither better nor worse than many of us. He is just an average Utahan who made poor choice of words when opposing a bill that the sponsor had been calling his "baby". In my opinion, if he had just said "ugly baby", the same vicious few who have been dominating the news would have still reacted with all the mock outrage... they were looking for something pounce on Buttars about, and they weren't about to be denied. Sen. Buttars is not a hateful person. He is a public servant who has done his best for many years. He deserves our gratitude, not our condemnation.

On the other hand, the hate-mongers who have spewed their vitriol on this board have left now doubt about their own intolerance and bigotry... they let it all hang out for everybody to see. What of them? I fear for the future of our state and country.

Grass Roots | 11:51 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
My hat is off to everyone for not only seeing this incident for what it is but also for getting involved and trying to make a change. In this day and age of "let somebody else do it" it is just awesome to see this grass roots effort to right a wrong. Keep it up !
Call It | 11:52 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Hypersensitive? How can anyone get upset over a few words? Its not like the words were "cult", "Non-Christian", or "fraud". Now those are the kinds of words people can get in a lather about.

To those of you that still support the Butt. Hey, it's a democracy so feel free. After all everybody has a right to march to a different drummer, or goose step as the case may be.
Buttars must go | 12:01 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars is so self righteous it's sickening.
bigal | 12:00 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I ask again, since when does the NAACP, and the race they represent, OWN the words "black" "ugly" and "baby"??? I use those words all the time in innumerable context's and black people don't even cross my mind in doing so. I don't follow Utah politics nor do I know anything of Chris Buttars other than what has been said in this article. But it sounds like you people trying to "Lynch" (also an unowned word) him are pretty hard up for garbage on him to obviously take his comments so far out of context.
Its so funny | 12:06 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
that this is a "non issue" and "was not racist" at all. Yet, during Mitt's campaign, the fact that he lost, absent any comments, was prejudice by non-Mormons. The hypocrisy of this state is amazing. Even more amazing is Senator Buttars' comments and the fact that he'll be re-elected. What is absolutely shocking is the amount of racism displayed by the people of Utah on these discussion boards. Whether its African-Americans (who are being hypersensitive) or Hispanics (who are "simple" and treated as dirt simply because they are looking for better lives just like everyone's ancestors here) or Southern Baptists (who are the only religion to take a candidates religion into the voting booth(?)) or just plain Gentiles in the state (who are apparently the biased ones?), the majority of Utahns rip them apart. Is this comment signaling out all Mormon Utahns? No. Simply the bigots who post on this site. Too Senator Buttars and those of you on this discussion board in that realm, thank you for making this state look like we haven't left the 1950's.
This guy has low standards, | 12:09 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
that's all. Isn't he the guy who owns all those rip off pay day loan stores. YES!! Just shows more of his disdain for the less privileged.

The less we see of him the better.
mc | 12:15 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
For those of you who call Buttars a "good man", it's time to raise your standards a tiny weeny bit. . .
Please run against Buttars... | 12:18 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I agree with an earlier poster. One or more Republican contenders from West Valley City need to step up to the plate and oppose Buttars in the primary. Everyone knows that the real elections in Utah happen in the Republican primaries. If Buttars makes it past the primary, he will almost certainly win re-election because of the (R) next to his name on the ballot.

And all you Republicans who vote straight party ticket in November, remember Buttars will very likely be on that that ticket! Don't vote straight Republican party ticket! (BTW, a very high percentage of Utahns vote straight party Republican. About 40% in my Cedar Hills precinct voted straight party Republican in the 2004 general election.)
PLEASE | 12:15 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
MR Buttars I don't want to go!
I asked | 12:22 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Some of the former Boys Ranch students (I don't think they were particularly fond of Chris Buttars) what they thought about this topic. To a person none of them think Chris is the least bit prejudice, saying "he treated us all with the greatest personal respect"!

Looks like a lot of smoke from someone(s) looking for an axe to grind.
re:Call It | 12:26 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
One person is "Hypersensitive".

A community is pointing out bigotry.
Pittakos | 12:21 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Well, since many of you still insist that he was being racist because he used the word "black" in his comments, let's just go ahead and list all the racist terms that you have more than likely been guilty of using.

Black Friday
Black Sabbath
Black Holes
Black Widow
Black Crowes
Black Sheep
Black Diamond (for all you skiers)
Black Eyed Peas
Black Belt
Black Tie
Black Hills
Black Knight
Black Box
Black Death

Yep, everyone of those are racist in nature. So be honest with yourselves when you use those terms. Quit trying to hide behind your bigotted nature and just go ahead and replace all of those blacks with the word Negro.
Butt Head | 12:27 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008

Jud | 12:58 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
How much more evidence do we need that the Republican leadership of the legislature is morally bankrupt? So far this session they've voted down renewable energy legislation, tuition help for the helpless, protection for abused animals, and even protection for little children from being trapped in a vehicle with a smoker. They've voted down any meaningful health-care reform. What a heartless, mean-spirited crowd of self-important buffoons. And now they say Buttars is a "good man"? Listen, I'm a Republican and a voter; all my friends are Republicans and voters, and from what I hear around me, you've gone way too far. Kiss yourselves goodbye this November.
To Pittakos | 1:06 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
You're definitely reaching here. It's not the word, "black", per se but how it was used in the context. Trying to equate "Black Diamond" with "black baby" demonstrates a simpleton mind set that only further demonstrates that those who come to Buttars defense usually lack substantative and sustainable arguments.
Buttars is an embarassment | 1:04 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars is a terrible embarassment to all of Utah. Not just for his racist views, but for his militantly conservative aberations. I'm a conservative republican but his views make me look like a flaming liberal.

Please get rid of him!
Please run against Buttars... | 1:20 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Oops. I meant West Jordan, not West Valley City in my previous post.
Deseret Dawg | 1:21 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
It's amazing how those who rhapsodize about "diversity" the most actually respect it the least. They believe diversity is defined only as your right to agree with them. They believe that every part of society should be equally "kaleidoscopic", rather than view America as what former NYC Mayor David Dinkins once referred to as a "gorgeous mosaic".

My suggestion to Utahns who do not like the predominant Utah culture - consider moving to one of the 49 other states. Utah has just as much right to its culture as does California. The states were intended to be sovereign entities in their own right, not just be sockpuppets of the Federal government.

Unlike the cowardly Trent Lott and George Allen, who groveled in the face of political correctness, Chris Buttars is standing strong in the face of this political lynching. God bless him!
Oh, Please | 1:26 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
What the guy said was beyond stupid, and it is not the first time he's embarrassed the State by saying stupid things. I 100% support the NAACP in their efforts to remove him from office, and I'm a white Mormon housewife. Granted- an educated white Mormon housewife.
My "bubble" that I raise my kids in does not contain lack of consequences for poor behavior, nor should the Utah Senate.

Unfit For A Public Official | 1:36 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
An elected representative of one of Utah's largest cities should know better than to use the words he chose. Either he is a naive fool who didn't understand the connotations of what he was saying or is a completely out of touch bigot. Both conclussions are unacceptable. If he is unwilling to resign for publicly embarrassing himself and the community, the voters of West Jordan need to show that reason and decency still exsist by ending his political carrer.
Henry Drummond | 1:42 p.m. Feb. 19, 2008
If you really want a change and can't bring yourself to vote for anybody who is a Democrat may I suggest the following:

The third week in March the Republican Party holds caucus meetings to elect delegates to the County Convention. The delegates choose the candidates for the party including Senator Buttars. Typically only a handful of people show up making it easy to get elected. They even elected me one year and I'm a flaming liberal.

If only the Eagle Forum type folks show up then they will continue to choose candidates like Chris. If you show up you may find someone who shares your values who can actually be a statesman.

I don't criticize the activist who do show up and tend to dominate the convention. They are doing what they are supposed to do under the system. The rest of us are not. That's why we have a legislature that seems more interested in narrow causes that what we sent them there for.

I'll see you at the caucus meetings!
