The only thing more asinine and ridiculous than this idiot even daring to seek re-election is any moron who thinks it would be a good idea to vote for him.
GOP Bob | 12:39 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008

Hey Chris, stop thinking about yourself all the time. Realize that for the sake of the Senate and, more importantly, the Church, that you are an embarassment and you need to step down.

You will lose your election, I assure you.

Come on... | 12:44 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
We live in such a hypersensitive world. This has been blown so out of proportion that we should all, including the NAACP, sit back and think about what we are doing to our discourse. Many statements, especially from baby boomers who spoke differently back in the day where statements had entirely different meanings than they do now, are grossly misinterpreted.

Why don't I hear this outrage when folks cuss and swear on a daily basis? That is far more offensive to me. Why don't we demand resignations when an off-colored or disrespectful joke is told in the workplace? It seems we are too wrapped up in speech that means little when other, for more offensive, is given a daily pass.

I, like most everyone else, do not condone hate speech, but this was not that. I say we all figure out what speech is really harmful and stop it in our lives. Abusive, ugly talk spoken to the ones we love most seems far more pervasive and less punished. In terms of what Buttars has said, we all need to get a little thicker skin.

Who's cryin' about being mean? | 12:51 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
'Well, you probably deserve this, you made a blunder and you hurt some people's feelings.' But all last week, each day it got meaner."

This coming from Senator Buttars? He's sad that everyone was getting 'meaner' last week? Give me a break. He gives Utah a HORRIBLE perception.
Alyssa | 1:19 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
This guy is a bigot! Anyonbe who thinks he's justified in saying these things is probably one as well
Meh | 2:17 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
He is obviously power hungry and has a bigger head than his mouth. Bigots, racists and stereotypical good ol' boys do not belong in government. If I made a comment like his at work I would be terminated. Send Mr. Buttars back to his 1700's plantation where he will fit right in. What bothers me most is the people who see nothing wrong with his statements. Shame on you.

My last name is Scott. If I called for everyones resignation that uses it in any any fashion other than a name I would have very little to do but be calling for resignations of politicions and radio announcers. The blacks complain their is to many of their people in jail percentage wise and want compassion and then to be so hard nosed against a person who made a simple mis-statement. Your glass home will be shattered.
Charity | 3:50 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Oh Please. Dosen't the NAACP have anything better to do.

Like maybe actually helping people.

Accepting apologies demonstrates class, builds bridges and creates opportunities to work together in the future.

Deliberately misinterpreting comments, taking offense where none is intended, and throwing your political weight around is the way to cement hatred and assure non cooperation.
Come on GOP Bob | 4:21 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
We are not talking about what is important to a church Bob. Mitt assurred us that "the church" would not be involved in politics so let's not put the State's politics in a church. Buttars needs to go because his type of politician used to wear a sheet. When this story gets national, and it will, let's not give the national press another reason to connect Utah politics to "the church".
Time to go | 5:16 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Anybody could be forgiven for saying a stupid thing or two. But Buttars has a long, sorry history of a mouth running with no brain. He's anti-science. He's anti black (or brown or yellow). He's anti-gay. He's anti-Gentile (love that word). West Jordan deserves better (at least I hope it does).
Bill | 5:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars is an old war horse who does not comprehend that the world has changed around him. His opposition to minorities no longer fits.

As a Republican, Im embarrassed to have him in the party. If he does not move on himself, he needs to be pushed out. I've already decided I'll financially contribute to whoever appears to be the strongest candidate opposing him if he runs again.
Dave | 5:43 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Please, can we have someone run against this man so he can lose.
HEAD HUNTING | 5:38 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
LET US BRING IN JESSE JACKSON TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
Robert from NC | 5:55 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
This comment made by Buttars was simply in bad taste. Why does this country now tolerate the "Speech Police"? Freedom of speech is codified in the law whereas freedom from insult is not. I for one am continually insulted by individuals who forget their history. At one time blacks and gays were forbidden many civil rights. It seems that as soon as they get some rights they want to deny them to others. I have personally known members of the KKK. I was laid off a construction job because I was LDS and the management who were members of the KKK found out.

So I have little use for a group who cost me lots of money. However, during High School a group of blacks held and slashed me across the face trying to cut my eyes out. During the trial the NAACP lawyer got the criminal defendant off with only probation and paying a fine which he never paid. As you can see I have lost little love for either group. Even so I believe the NAACP now has the upper hand. They seem to be as evil and pushy as the KKK. Both groups should be shunned.
Timj | 6:01 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Even without this last blunder, he's done enough damage.
Didn't he claim that he was not going to run again? Didn't he say something about he and his wife serving an LDS mission? Why this turn-around?
Even worse | 6:08 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
It's a shame people don't get this outraged over the crappy legislation he always tries to push.
South Jordan Voter | 6:13 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
To "Come on.." and others who would excuse Buttars: I'm a dyed in the wool Reagan Republican. I share virtually all of Buttars' political views. But I was so offended by his statement. It was disgusting! He has to go! Buttars, this is not about your political enemies getting even. I am your political ally. But Mr. Buttars, this may come as a surprise to you, but, pssst, there are plenty of others who can carry on in your place. Life can go on without you. Let somebody step in who isn't prone to making racist comments. Oh! I get so mad every time I think of what Buttars said. BUTTARS, DROP IT!
Jeff | 6:16 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
This would be a good test for the people of Utah. Would they really re-elect this fool? Let's get someone in office who doesn't think it's his duty as a public servant to make people's lives miserable.
Anonymous | 6:19 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
If Senator Butters's remarks were considered as having been aimed at Mormons would you be "hyper sensitive?"
Our legislators condone this conduct and I think they like having Chris say the things they'd like to say, but don't. Shame, shame.
russ | 6:36 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Chris, in football this is called piling on. Apparently you have upset the teams. Both teams are piling on. Not a good sign politically.

That is an indicator that you should resign. But we live in a free country and you can run and find out if your local constituents approve. That could be enlightening...
Utah Resident | 6:39 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Great News! Nobody, but Nobody gives Utah and it's Church finer representation. I hope he stays for life.
shadow | 6:40 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Senator Buttars is just your normal guy from Utah. What is the big deal? Has trouble with words, sentences actually.

Stay the course. That allows this to happen again and then you can resign with full shame. Right now you can say you were hounded out, but in the future you will just have to up and quit.

We could use a little more entertainment in our lives. Stay the course.

The Shadow Knows.
Anonymous | 6:35 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Guys like this make a mockery of Utah politics. If he makes it through the back-door caucuses as a Republican, he has a high likelihood of beating the Democrat.

It is time we through out the garbage like Buttars, Stephenson and most of the Serve US oriented legislature in favor of the service types.
uncannygunman | 6:35 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Of course he'll run again, and he'll likely win. The comments are just not that big of a deal to his constituency, perhaps even a positive since they show a willingness to speak his mind and suffer the reaction of those mean liberals!
Jazz Fan | 6:42 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Chris, Go ahead and run. But make us a promise that you'll stop listening to, and being influenced by, gangsta rap music.

Have a great day!
liberal larry | 6:43 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I don't care what you conservatives say, I'm voting for Buttars! Chris Buttars and Gail, What's her name, do more for the liberal agenda than Ted Kennedy and Jessie Jackson, put together. Go Chris! Where can I send a contribution?
Bart Mortensen | 6:46 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
No, Mr. Buttars has to go. Will the people of his district have the wisdom to make change? His history of "dumb" things so taints the water that he has become the lightning rod of the state senate. There are many more people capable in his district.
Give me back my buttars! | 7:09 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Well all is well in Zion..he was speaking up there on the hill where the first slave shacks existed in the state..why this is an outrage to all the pioneer children who are always right by golly!Even if we are percieved as slip sliding away!
Good year | 7:30 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I am surprised that he's running again. Wow. That being said, I think he understands that he made a mistake and got slapped hard for it.
Why is everyone so worried about West Jordan voting on him? If they don't like him and don't like all the drama, they won't vote him in! Seems like all this happened on a good year: re-election year.
Amused | 7:29 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I find it amusing that Senator Buttars is complaining of people being "mean." I won't call him every name in the book, but I will use the word idiot to describe him. It has become a forgone conclusion that this guy will say something during the legislative session that is totally idiotic. If his constituency keeps electing him, they deserve whatever they get! Senator Buttars, I can't hear what you are saying because your actions are always ringing so loud in my ears.
mom | 7:40 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
It is up to the voters to decide if he represent them. They put him in office and only they can take him out.

Tim | 7:57 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
It's guys like Buttars that make non-Mormons nervous about voting for candidates like Mitt. Sorry to say.........
WC | 7:52 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
YAY!!! this is good either way. If he wins it shows the true colors of West Jordan and Utah - if he loses we get rid of him! It is a win-win!
newcomer | 8:04 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I just moved here in the Summer and have to say that I'm aghast at what passes for acceptable political behavior. The very notion that the Eagle Forum is a political force is astonishing. I thought these guys disappeared after they lost their fight to stop the civil rights movement back in the 1960s......except, apparently, in Utah.

Only in San Francisco and Berkeley is the political dynamic as laughable as seems to be here.
fr1nk | 8:05 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Is there no one else that can represent West Jordan? Is that the best you guys can come up with? I dont get out there much but the place doesnt seem that stupid?
Dreamer | 8:09 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars says he's getting all this hate directed at him. How does it feel? - What goes around - comes around.
sally ann | 8:26 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars should go! There is no excuse for his ignorant comments. If he doesn't realize that his time is up, surely the people of West Jordan will retire him.
Ridgely | 8:20 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
So now Buttars is playing the victim card? For someone who deliberately targets minority groups to punish them, and dishes out mean spirited legislation year after year he seems to have awfully thin skin. The sad part of this fiasco is that the ultraconservatives that keep Buttars protected from accountability in his idealogical bubble, will instictively come flocking to his defense like a stampede of crazed lemmings. Not because of principle but from self-interest and habit. Call the media; cue the staged rally; and send out the inevitable "He's being crucified for protecting our values" fundraising letters.
Not Gay Retribution | 8:37 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I am a 45 year old Republican male of European descent and have been happily married, sealed in the SLC temple and active in my church for the past 22 years. I have daughters that attend school in Utah, grades 2nd and 6th.

I amd neither Gay nor African, so any question of this being "Gay" or "African American" retribution "thing", it is not.

The "CULTURE" of the State of Utah, feeds into the "CULTURE" of the schools that my daughters attend and the State that they grow up into and may someday call home.

There is a need to change the "CULTURE" of this State, and if Senator Buttars is allowed to stay in the Senate, it does not move us closer to this type of "CULTURE", rather it moves us backward.

I STRONGLY URGE THE REMOVAL OF SENATOR BUTTARS FROM THE UTAH STATE SENATE, if not for the State of Utah that I live in, then for the CULTURE of the State that my daughters will inherit from our generation.

Of course we gotta re-elect him!
He's one of aren' - ain't he?
Anonymous | 8:38 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
I'm thrilled he's running for re-election. I live in West Jordan and can't wait to have a say in throwing this man to the curb. While we have a right to opinion and free speech, we do not have a right to incite prejudice and hate and expect to have it tolerated. Mr. Buttars, you and I have a date at the voting booth.
Get rid of him and . . . | 8:39 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
The fact that he is meeting with supporters from the Eagle Forum is enough for me. Even before this latest episode, he was a poor example of a public servant. Go ahead and run Chris. The Senate could use another Democrat.
If I could Bet | 8:39 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
If I could place a wager on this, I'd be willing to bet $1000.00 that he will be re-elected. People have a short memory and come November all will be forgiven by the people in his area. Besides which, he has the magic letter "R" after his name which will pretty much guarantee he'll be spouting his venom, bigotry and hatred same time next year.
Ernest T. Bass | 8:46 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Hey Buttars, what exactly is the "gay agenda" you always talk about?
Archaea Cougarguard | 8:46 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Here in Nevada, Chris Buttars would not survive. Voters here actually think for themselves rather than being told in Sacrament Meeting how to vote. When will Utahns wake up, engage in critical thinking (not a sin), and exercise their common sense? If the Utah GOP is intelligent, they will find a candidate to eliminate Buttars in the primary.
Tyler | 8:47 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Senator Buttars may have made a mistake. He has apologized and it is up to those he has offended to decide whether they want to forgive them. However, his asking forgiveness does not take the responsibility away from his constituents to decide whether he is the best man to represent them and work on their behalf in the Legislature. Hopefully, these citizens will closely examine the work he has done at the State. I, personally, will never vote for him. He is a hateful man who continually attacks those with lifestyles or traits he disagrees with. He continually makes racial remarks or "mistakes" that hurt the community. He should not be re-elected.
Anonymous | 8:52 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Huckabee/Buttars in '08!
Alex | 8:57 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Archaea, I have never--NEVER--been told in Sacrament Meeting how to vote. Never happened. Sorry. Sometimes it's not very nice to assume.
BigDaddy | 8:58 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Buttars say his platform is "defending traditional values". I believe in that too, unless they are false values and teachings. Does anyone have Jeanetta's phone number? I'd like to march against this character if he keeps up this charade...
grundle | 9:02 a.m. Feb. 19, 2008
Hmmm....Never been told how to vote in sacrement meeting. For that matter...never been directed by church leadership to tell others how to vote. Well...There was the Gamboling issue a few years back...

"When will Utahns wake up, engage in critical thinking (not a sin)" hmm....Is it critical thinking to pass judgement based on soundbites and not examine the context of soundbite? Yep...Them Nevada folks are sure well represented by "Archaea Cougarguard"

Because I have followed Buttars political career (not just the D-liberal news blurbs), if I lived in his district I would support his re-election.
