Measure Twice | 11:56 a.m. Feb. 15, 2008
Way to measure twice and get the facts straight before cutting.

The Fiscal Note on Senate Bill 81 (the proposed stringent immigration bill) notes that in implementing all the changes to get tough on immigration it will cost the state more than it saves the state in providing services to illegal immigrants.

It is silly beyond belief to think that this is simply a matter of ducking payment for the costs of illegal immigration. Let us suppose that the State of Utah is successful in persuading the Federal government to accept financial responsibility for ALL costs, direct and indirect: where does that money come from? YOU,just the same. Left pocket, right pocket, front, back or coat,IT'S STILL YOUR POCKET!However,it will all be moot soon,as all three major contenders for the Presidency have as much as admitted (if not openly endorsed) an open border policy. The worship of mammon (money or,if you prefer, filthy luchre)and power is what's defining the program here. You and I are to shut up,watch our big screen TV,and sell the nation and the culture of liberty for a mess of pottage. To paraphrase a well known quote, "He who would trade essential liberty for a little security deserves neither". Rest assured, when all is said and done, neither is what you will have.

The answer to this debate has always been before us. The 14th amendment states that anyone born under the "care and control of the United States is an American citizen". This was later reinterpreted to mean that if an illegal could run across the border in time to drop their baby in an American hospital at the taxpayers expense, then that anchor baby would be an American citizen, and guarantee that the illegal mother would be able not only to stay in the US but collect welfare benefits for the next 18 years. We need to go back to the original intent of the 14th amendment and immediately deport both the illegal mother and her illegal baby back to the mothers country. I would much rather have my tax dollars used for a one way ticket than thenext 18 year of welfare. Cut the head off this monster and the body will soon die, and American will again be the great country it once was.

Our public leaders are selling out our country! The American traditions are soon to be the land of Mexico. Yes, I know, but the truth hurts many times. All this feel good and let em in to help fellow man "stuff" is nice and fuzzy but if the money is gone it's gone. Hospitals going under due to those who go to the ER for runny noses because no insurance, school overcrowded and being held up due to language problems, etc. are killing this country! We as Americans need to put AMERICANS first above businesses using illegals to save money. Write / phone your governor, mayor, etc. to complain otherwise you're no better than a non-voter! And the president of Mexico should keep his backside back in Mexico and fix his own country before coming here to complain!

Ken - you have as much credibility as Barbie's boyfriend. Last time I read about putting Americans first was when a local Aryan gang canvassed our neighborhood. You should look them up. You might fit in. They made the same arguments.

It's funny how everyone complains about illegals putting a strain on our economy, but no one seems to notice or complain of U.S Citizens who speak perfect english, mostly (white people) asking for money on the highway, and waiting for my change to fall on a MC Donalds drive thru, instead of going to job services to find a job. Complain all you want, but Mexicans know how to work hard to support their family. That's why you will see them doing the "dirty jobs" none of you would be willing to do. (TO:"AMERICAN") I would rather have my tax dollars going toward something usefull like teaching Hispanic children English, than having to support shameless bumbs on the street who have the ability to work but choose not to because they are so acustomed to getting a "free ride". So think AGAIN before you generalize all Mexicans!
