to bio:

You are so right. Red light districts were some of the cleanest places in the world, until parents got involved. And the porno industry was so tasteful until it became over run with parents. I can clearly see how parents have taken a pure white product of intimacy and made it filthy. Those darn parents ruin everything.

WHY IS IT ALL OF A SUDDEN BAD TO LIVE IN A CLEAN AND DECENT COMMUNITY!! IT HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH MORMON. IT'S JUST PLAIN MORAL. LOOK UP THE EFFECTS OF PORNOGRAPHY ON THE BRAIN AND BEHAVIOR. MAYBE A LITTLE EDUCATION WILL SHOW YOU THAT IT'S NOT APPROPRIATE TO HAVE THESE THINGS AVAILIABLE TO MINORS...MAYBE NOT TO ANYONE!

Wow raids on shops with genitals seems to be becoming a theme in the state of Utah. First Happy Valley Tattoo in American Fork for having ONE book on genital piercings that is scientific and nothing pornographic about it. Now a novelty store that's been around for YEARS is getting raided? I used to shop at Spencers all the time when I was younger and they ALWAYS had questionable items and nobody has ever put up a stink about it before. I think that the deal in American Fork has started something that's going to affect ALL stores selling arty stuff or anything with a sexual overtone. If you find Spencers offensive then just don't shop there. No need to start raiding everyone.

I honestly hope they can't prove anything, then I hope Spencer's will bill the attorneys office for lost profits resulting from seized merchandise.

It's sad that a business cannot sell a product without being fearful of offending someone or by just showing something society would get a good laugh from.

what a joke... please get informed before you post. Not to say they don't have good art... but they won't display any nudity
jt | 4:34 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
no matter where someone lives, there will be problems with this. lets worry about the real crimes that are going on and try and solve those. i do not agree with what they sell, but they have a right to sell it. maybe if they put it in a back room where it is not available to children? has anyone ever spoken to the corporate headquarters about that? might be a start. its called communication and compromise. that way your children are not exposed to it.

To all that love to bash and trash Utah and the people here with conservative values:

1. The cops were just enforcing the law. You don't like the law? Work to get it changed... there are ways to do this.

2. Just put the toys and such in an "adult" area and then most of the consumer complaints would go away. Oh wait, Spencer's won't do that because it will make them overtly admit they sell "adult products" and will undoubtedly bring more attention to the laws they are probably breaking in many other areas - yep even other states that Utah. Oh yeah, they will also oppose it because they will sell less of it - to the teenage mall rats that will no longer have access (or the guts to go into an adult area).

3. Stop with the idiotic refernces to supermarkets pulling fruits and vegitables. You know this is a stupid and juvenille argument and only exposes how you may be using your produce (which is okay). The second Albertsons starts promoting these as sexual things beyond food... then they should get raided too!

Just keep the kids out of it and all is cool.

to: BYU's Art dept?

Actually I was on an art tour with my high school AP art class nearly 20 years ago and toured BYU art department and the gallery at the time was of nude charcoal drawings. So why dont you get informed.

Why doesn't Spencers have a seperate section for the adult-themed matieral, like what they have at Blue Boutique? And why aren't the kiddies being carded before they can look at the stuff?

What the hell are you guys talking about? What even happened
Anonymous | 6:31 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
I am glad to see that Utah has solved all the more important problems. Nobody has to worry about things like murder, stealing, graffiti, fighting, and drunk driving. Imagine if the police were too busy solving all that stuff. There would still be offensive things for sale at Spencer's, and the kid might come home with a book of fart jokes or something.

Oh wait, I just heard all those other real crimes *do* exist in Utah. My bad.

"General items in the shapes of genitals."

Have you looked at the LDS office building lately?!? A large tower with the two globes at the bottom...

Why pick on this store when you have the world's largest phallus sitting downtown?
Anonymous | 6:51 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
Yes I am sure that the materials taken are fart jokes. Im sure they left the plastic vibrating human parts on the shelves.

You know Oregon has a much more sophisticated police force. They spend all day calling video game stores seeing if the sales people will sell minors M rated video games and getting them fired.

So if its not murders, or theft, or rape, or prostitution, there really isnt any need for police work.

No wonder cops sit around and eat donuts in other states.
Excellent!! | 7:13 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
Next Utah should ban sex altogether as I have noticed that it causes children! Oh yes and I think that banannas should be next as they definately look provocative. Ahh, only in America places like this are raided because of the bad influence it has on our kids, but gun shops are promoted as being normal. Pass the ammo!!
Code80 | 7:15 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
Good for the Police. How many people moved here to live in the safest area of the United States only to complain about the loss of freedoms. There is no loss. As was said in an earlier post, if I do not like what is in the store I will not shop there, well if you do not like the laws and enforcement of said law in the State move.
Omar | 7:25 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
bad is bad only for good behavior people:
people with a bad behavior don't care about what their kids are watching or looking at ,even don't have respect for them selves we the parents should teach moral standards to our children makeing they believe in good things selfrespect and tolerance the most of the prescints are full of people with bad teachings from their parentswe are (perent's )responsable for our kids teachings but law is to enforce those teachings when it is aplicated.
be a parent | 7:34 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
people should take responsibility into their own hands. if your children are caught doing something you think is wrong, then punish them, not the rest of the community. spencers is a business just like anyother store in the mall. would you want deseret books to take bibles out of the mall because the bible has violence in it?
why? | 7:44 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
ok so it's bad to have children to go into a joke shop but it's ok they can watch movies about serial killers and people getting blown up. make love not war!
Joe E. | 7:49 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
I didn't know they allowed judges, states attorneys, or police to operate only with an 8th grade education. Utah??? Isn't that where brother mary their sisters and sister mary their cousins and fathers mary their daughters etc.??
dcc | 8:10 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
To all those parents worried about what their kids are seeing at Spencer's: Why are you dumping your kids at the mall without supervision? Real parents take responsibility for their kids and don't expect the society at large to watch them. If your kids are going into Spencer's Gifts then it's YOUR fault. BE A PARENT!
Raul | 8:21 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
wow just read this whole thread and cant belive people are telling others to move location telling others to "lower" there standards, judging each by value's,religion, geography, ect. Whatever happened to instead of calling the police and going to the manager and explaining your position and have other's whom feel the same speak up and then calling the cops I'm sure the manager would have listened its retail the bottom line is what matters. I belive calling the police should be the last resort(except in case's violence or theft) talking things through like adults. This should not be about who is right & who is wrong, I have no problem with sex or porn but trying make others uncomfortable with it is not cool in turn those that feel offended speak up tell them without being condesending. stop being so hateful to others

WOW!!! I really do love Utah, and I am very proud to have been born and raised here! I think that there are so many wonderful things to come out of this state! But reading this article and some of these comments really, really, REALLY make me want to move! I can NOT stand living in such a narrow minded, warped, brain washed, "sweet our problems underneath the rug so our family looks perfect!," bubble anymore! Get a grip UTAH! Don't we have more important issues to be worrying about than a seventeen year old seeing a rubber "genital?" COME ON!
arc | 10:01 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
One question. There was no ordinance in Salt Lake City for Blue Boutique to even have a "back room". They were perfectly legal per SLC ordinance. Blue Bouitique did it out of courtesy. As far as I know there are 4 or more Spencer's in Utah. Ogden, Layton, Fashion Place, and Provo. Is Layton the only one that has laws on the books to regulate this? Does Layton have laws on the books that regulates this, or is this going to be tossed out?
What? | 10:08 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
I'm guessing that the average age of posters here is about 14 yrs/old because some people here are telling us to grow up so we can act like hormone-raging 15 yr old boys without a shred of decency.

You followed the Mormons to Utah, deal with it or leave!

What parent in their right mind wants adult material in the middle of a mall where their kids hang out?

No matter how pervasive it may be in society, we should continue to do all we legally can do to remove this filth from places where it can tempt our children at ages when they are most vulerable. If kids go to a specialty store and seek it out on their own, there's not much you can do to stop them. You go there for one thing only. But when it's in a mall, we run the risk of it luring in innocent, curious kids who aren't ready to be exploring these things.
j f busch | 10:07 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
sounds like a lot of people need a history lesson
telling mormons to leav or except their way of life .who was there frist .yes parents should teach
their children what and how thing should or should not be done.but you show me a parent that says they
control their child 100% of the time and ill show you one that don't always tell the truth

If you look at Utah code 76-10-1228. Indecent public displays -- Prohibitions -- Penalty, and similar sections, you can get in trouble with magazines, books, videos, posters, etc., but I don't see anything under Utah Law, that Layton police can get Spencer's on. Perhaps we need to modify the law.
LDS teen | 11:13 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
Stop w/ the food gestures, even I am more mature than to go there... Idiots.

I am often at Fashion Place Mall, and I must admit that I have never noticed Spencer's. I agree with the fact that if such things are being displayed openly, it needs to be SECTIONED OFF to an area where curious little children can't wander into. Parents can do all the teaching they can, even accompanying their kids to the mall... but what will you tell your kids when they ask you what certain "toys" are used for?? Blaming it on the LDS church is besides the point...

The issue, herein, lies with whether or not the police raid was justified in their actions. If they have support, then let them prove it. I thought it a bit ridiculous because there are other resolutions. But if it's law..?

As an LDS teenager, who was raised in a not so LDS environment, I've experienced the mindset of both worlds. There is NOTHING wrong with wanting some morals and values instilled in my community. It's not small-mindedness or sheltering children, but rather a lifestyle to ensure choices are made when they are READY!! Stop blaming Mormons..
Nice to know . . . | 11:26 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
. . .that there is so little crime in Layton that the prosecutors and cops have time to raid malls.

The complain must have been made by some mother who is ashamed of her kids because they are evidence.

Anonymous | 11:26 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
utah parents need to take no responsibility for educating their kids about nudity and sex. It is apperently the duty of the state and federal government to make sure that kids no nothing until they are on there own in the world why would you educate your kids on how to take care of themselves if your not going to educate them on sex and you dont even have to say what it is but let them know they can talk to you about it my first 'sex talk' was with my boyfriends mom who then inspired me to talk with my father about it now me and my dad have the same opinions but he knows i am my own person he educates me not on the process of sex but what things could come along with all possible choices its nice to have an adult who has had sex help me look at things i hope all parents learn to accept there child and mentor them not contol them
Tia | 11:28 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
Again with the whole "leave if you don't like it," or "mormons were here first," stuff....oh come on! First of all, Utah is a state of the USA, not of the mormon church. Secondly, from almost the VERY BEGINNING of the pioneers settling in Utah, others came in and the economy flourished, and all were welcomed. Third, there are now more non-active mormons and non-mormons living in Utah that active LDS. This is part of America...and if YOU don't like that, then start your own country somewhere else!
think about it | 11:52 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
76-10-1228. Indecent public displays. this utah code was refered to in a comment it outlaws illicit sex or sexual immorality displays to peoples under the age of 18. one: Spencers gifts do not display illicit (illegal) sex. two: Morality refers to the concept of human ethics which pertains to matters of right and wrong to an individual conscience. i know some people may have a problem with it but those who walk in there and look at it dont find harm in doing so. also the layton spencers the items were takin from has a seperate corner for the 'love' items so if thats not why your there you dont have to be around those things. it is not like they are putting there 'love' products where they cannot be avoided its all a matter of the person you are dont go in if you dont want to see that parents should be mentors and trust the jobs they have done as parents if you think your kids are old enough to be at the mall arnt they old enough to think for themselves
oregon man | 11:52 p.m. Feb. 13, 2008
I don't live in utah, but i sure admire the folks that try to keep all this filth and garbage out of reach of their children. Utah is suppose to be different. like the shining city on the hill. an example to the rest of the world. keep up the good work you faithfull saints. feel sorry for your detractors, and those that need this porn in their lives as a substitute for happiness. they shall never know true joy and bliss untill they rid their souls of this cancer and let the light of the savior shine within them. such a sad life for those that waller in this sickness.

think of all the people who probably stole other things from spencers while the police were busy with the personal massagers

Florida | 6:58 a.m. Feb. 14, 2008
All of you hypocritical people bashing Utah because of this need to take a drive to other states. You have no idea what you are talking about. As someone stated earlier come to the Bible belt and see what you can find. In Alabama you can't buy beer on Sundays, here in my part of Florida you can only buy the kind of stuff mentioned in this article at an Adult specific store. Stop trying to bash Utah and get out of the state if you don't like it.
Town Heathan | 9:17 a.m. Feb. 14, 2008
What a wonderful country we live in. Overall, we have great diversity...that's what makes us strong.

But....state by state, things get a bit on the wierd side.

In Utah...you can't have a phalic symbol in a store without being obscene. In Neveda Prostitution is legal and state operated in several brothals!!!

In Utah....buying a "flavored" drink like "Mike's Hard Lemonade" is State regulated to "protect" our kids from it's evil influence.

In California...it's in every store you go in...and I don't think California has more of a drinking problem than Utah has a Meth problem?

Utah is surrounded by States that look at the laws they (Utah) has passed and they just shake their heads. Crazy Mormons!!!

Lastly...to Props....Allow me to clarify one item on your list. Mormons didn't discover and open up UTAH....your native American and your trappers did.
So if we are kicking out people who didn't "settle" this land...I guess you best move with the rest of us!!! :-)

sheesh | 9:29 a.m. Feb. 14, 2008
What a waste of taxpayer time and money. The police and government should spend time and resources on things that are really causing problems with youth: drugs, truancy, lack of education. These sex toys are only funny to teenage boys, probably not that harmful. What a waste of time.
Anonymous | 12:42 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008
To:Town Heathan

So are you saying Utah should sell mikes hard liquor to minors and legalize prostitution?
Is that what makes other places normal?

The trappers really didnt settle Utah, they were transient. The Native Americans were also often transient, but lived in all of North and South America, when you move back to the old world I will too.

Tax payers money hard at work | 1:20 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008
For all of you who say "it's about time", if you have a better understand of what YOUR child is doing you would know what they are buying. It is censored material and it states right there on the packaging sexual explicit. Really now you would rather use hard earned tax dollars spent seizing some games and suggestive natured items then see police really inaction where they should be. Believe it or not people your kids are still out there HAVING SEX. A game is not going to change that. And I personally have a few of those games, and some other Spencers' products. It's not porn, or trashy, maybe a little vulgar but thats it. Get over yourselves. Here's a thought you don't want your kid buying it go to the mall with them, or hey here's one since you like throwing money away give your kids mall money straight to the police department. Then they can raid all other places like McDonalds because there is a giant red hair man wanting to walk up and HUG your kid. Can we say PEDOPHILE. Get real.

Your right...everyone that is not a Temple card holding, full tithe paying, never go to the store on Sunday Mormon should stay. Everyone else should leave.....

Sure hope you fit your mold!!!

On the thought that Spencers is causing immorality in UTAH...I read somewhere that Utah leads the nation in child molestations. Yup...that must be Spencers fault. It has nothing to do with the close minded sexual philosiphy this state has, that fails to educate their people.

And I am wondering...how many of you have titilated about the things you see when you went into Spencers... Oh my....I'm looking...but I don't want anyone to know..... Sounds like Anonymous....

I did not judge you, why do you judge me. I just questioned your comment. I would like to now how the differences you made between Utah and other states make them better.

I have never been to Spencers so it would be hard to be like the hypothetical person you describe.

The fact of the matter is I do not know what exactly the police confiscated and neither do you. If they were wrong then all this is pointless and Spencers will be vindicated.
Dearest Town Heathan, | 2:30 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008
You probably get excited about the thought of walking around naked in the streets to upset those darn mormons...
Town Heathan | 3:32 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008
Can't wait for the police to lock up all the "sexually related" books at Barnes and Nobel.

If fact I agree...anything of any sexual content should be eliminated so as not to be discussed.

Censhorship of the highest level should be enforced.

Non-belivers should move.

Yup..that's the answere!!! If we bury our heads in the sand, all of this will go away like a bad dream.

Just like all the meth used in Utah (3rd highest in the USA) or all the plastic surgery (1st hightest in the USA)

We can cure this disease by wishing it away....

You get the drift...
Town Heathan | 3:49 p.m. Feb. 14, 2008
Now that I've gotten all of that off my chest...

Most LDS people I know are good "God Fearing" individuals.

I can understand their desires to keep "smut" away from their children and out of their environment.

I too, actually wished that what their goal was, was actually achievable. But...as a parient of Jr.High and High School kids, I have come to find that most of us...you and me are deluding ourselves if we think that some store like Spencers is the cause of our problems. Trust me...what you aren't letting them see or hear or learn about, they ARE learning from their friends.

That's why I'm a bit hostile...(and I apoligize...I souldn't be that way)... is that this all seems so foolish when the reality is...you cannot hide your kids from this stuff. The only solution is to educate them....something that most parients are woefully weak at...myself included....

Hey I'm all for liberal-minded living....but in today's society even those "of age" are Carded for items sold in stores, Video Games,Nicotine, Alcohal and Adult Merchandise so instead of "Bashing" Spencer Gifts, Why don't they instill a policy of "We Card Here" (no exception)and not display what other people might deem vulgar out in the open. Maybe have a back room for items that may not be "for everyone" especially not those under-aged consumers with over peaking curiosity. I mean our government is all for zero tolerance in our schools, well why not in stores as well?
really! | 12:52 a.m. Feb. 15, 2008
I suspect that this site is being blogged heavily by some group that is totally amoral and immoral....It is sad that such a beautiful state should have so many people who are trying to prove that they aren't too good. People can never be too good. We need to help kids as much as we can...we are not liberated by defending cheap, tawdry, disgusting, immature merchandise that is flagrantly displayed for all ages to see. It's mean spirited to denigrate Utah by saying it's a "laughing stock", or "hillbilly" or other such cheap shots.
