Wonderful idea, it is sad to see neighborhoods decline. Dialogue is so important between neighbors, and to create a sense of pride for your home, rented or bought. It is a place where one lives. Cleaning yards, removal of junk etc. But people need to feel pride for the place where they live, inside the home and out. Together so much can be accomplished and it is also a way to get to know each other better and to form a real "community", within a community. There are so many places that are run-down and it need not be, it is a sad and depressing situation. But the attitude of: I'm just renting so why should I put forth the effort, is wrong. Don't be overtwhelmed just start with your own home and yard, and neighbors will folow suit. Good luck!!!

Along with the clean-up, can you get rid of the little gang-bangers who go around and deface everyone's property? My fence is mine, not their chalk or should I say paint board for their stupid graffiti. I really get irritated and don't know what I can do as a citizen when I drive around and see people's personal property ruined by these thoughtless punks.

...that's where it starts.

Is there a dump in your neighborhood? Find out who owns the home, and write letters. Get everyone involved!

Also, enforce the rule about "unrelated inhabitants" and (I can't believe it's not already an ordinance) get rid of the cars parked on the lawn.

At the same time, start xeriscaping projects at homes where lawns have died for lack fo water. Why pour MORE water and expensive into a lawn that merely drinks up precious water resources? (Think of what this would have done, for the elderly woman in Orem who got ticketed for not watering her lawn?)

Get to know your neighbors....and NEVER mention religion. Ever. Heal the splits.

But start with the landlords. If you can't get them to care, no one else will.

Great job, West Valley! It is nice to see elected officials actually carry through with campaign promises.
