Amy Winehouse can leave London any time she wishes, it's the US government which barred her entry.
The grammys have become totally disconnected and irrelevant, like the fashion industry.
The only thing good is that the polka guy from Winnipeg usually wins is category.
If Anonymous thinks the Grammy's have become disconnected and irrelevant, he or she ought to look at the number of albums sold. That ain't irrelevant. Hollywood is the purest free market in America.
Yeah, Amy Winehouse can leave London any time she wants, only it is a good thing America noticed she was not ready to enter this country because of her drug and alcohol problems. Definitely not more of what we need in this country.
Let's reward someone for rehab. Oh wait, I've just stated the MO for every other faux, plastic and disingenuous "awards" celebrity hand out show. Bring on the Oscars!
Ms. Winehouse and most of today's "artists" are like that stuff collecting dust on your mom's shelf: kitsch. Nothing more. Hollow and designed to take up room for no significant purpose.
"Here we are now, entertain us." Cobain was sure right about that.
For mentioning the award for the Turtle Island String Quartet and their excellent tribute album to John Coltrane masterpiece.
I had never heard her before last night. Her voice is amazing- rich and sultry. It is sad that so many great talents ruing their lives with drugs and alcohol.
Who's YOUR favorite entertainer? Nothing kitschy like Liberace, Barry Manilow, Celine Dion or Dolly Parton -- right? Glitter-manufactured personalities, some with talent (but none as creative as Ms Winehouse)?
What's next? You're going to tell those darned whippersnappers to get off your grass?
And yeah. Cobain sucked too ;)
I guess you two missed the follow up story that the United States DID allow and DID issue Winehouse a visa to come over here. The US didn't ban her from coming here, they eventually "gave in."
Winehouse chose not to come because the timeframe to get over here, practice and get ready was too short.
Grammy's and R&R HOF are a joke. Rush should have won for best instrumental last night, but again, it went to the "popular" Bruce Springsteen. When will music people get a clue and realize that Rush is the greatest band ever named Rush in the history of the world!!!
Hi "Gee, Awesome." Thanks for the definition of kitsch with your artists list. Winehouse creative? Nope. Tired. And publicity-seeking at best.
Give me Thurston Moore. Or John Cale. Or Godspeed You! Black Emperor. Or David Byrne. Or Dinosaur Jr. Or Pere Ubu. Or Dream Theater. Or Neutral Milk Hotel. Or Rocket from the Crypt. Or The Flaming Lips. Or Shudder to Think. Or The Dillinger Escape Plan. Or Steve Albini. Or Tangerine Dream.
Wiki John Cage. That's a good start for you.
P.S. Cobain was correct in his decision to leave. The (cough) Grammy's are everything he was against in life. Took his death to teach us that.
Sarah Silverman as Amy Winehouse in that skit from London was excellent!!
Winehouse will probably Overdose in the next few years. Is she talented? Yes, but she will throw it all away because of her abuse of hard drugs. Its a fine line to walk considering some of the best music ever written was done so under the influence of drugs ie Pink Floyd, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix. Some pull out like Floyd and others die young. Its a crazy lifestyle.
I am extremely impressed with how many currently largely unpopular musical artists Awesome! can drop. Talking about tired- the "my favorite musical artists are artists who are not popular- and then when they become popular, I never liked them" take is as tired and played as it gets. I'm sure Awesome! did not like Talking Heads in the mid-80's or Dinosaur Jr and The Flaming Lips in the early-90's.
All subjective awards shows are a joke and an embarassment to all who participate.
Actually, "Tired and Played," that list was made just off the top of my head. I have more than four decades of music appreciation and experiential circumstance, notwithstanding several personal interactions with Tina Weymouth in the early 80s; sharing sound checks with J Mascis during his solo gigs; and sitting in with Wayne and Steve while tracking "Transmissions" at WBros. in '93.
Since you asked specifically about those wonderful artists.
Careful what you are so sure about.
And yes, the Lips did win a Grammy last year. Much to their chagrine, I might add.
Yes, you are correct, the US REVERSED it's decision barring her entry on Friday. The DN was still incorrect in saying Amy "wasn't allowed to leave her native London".
Musician of the Year???
Austin Texas' Bob Schneider, and I'll bet anyone that has heard Bob agrees.
I just turned off the Grammy's last night and listened his the new album "When the Sun Breaks Down on the Moon".
