Nice job in covering for Romney's behind Best speech.
Sometimes.... | 6:14 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
When I was first married my wife and I attended a ward in Ogden that was comprised of only newly-weds. I'll never forget one guy, who used to teach the Sunday School class, joked that in his frustration he sometimes wished the Lord would make him a destroying angel. We laughed immensely because it sounded so funny to hear someone admit that sometimes they actually wanted to destroy the wicked.

Today, when Mitt makes a tough decision for what he believes is for the good of our country as well as for the good of the people in Iraq, Mitt is largely ridiculed on this board.

"He tried to buy the Presidency". "He flip-flopped". "He's a Mormon" (usually spelled incorrectly and without capitalization). "Mitt was a panderer". Someone on page 2 who said they were gay admitted that they and others purposely used anti-Mormon attacks so they could sink his campaign because they claimed that Mitt somehow hurt them. Absolute craziness.

I wish posters had to TRUTHFULLY identify themselves by name and city so that they couldn't use cowardly "hit and run" tactics. At least for today, part of me wishes I were a destroying angel...

Who in the world would say Rush is poison???

Face it folks. What killed Romney's chances was Limbaugh's endorsement. Limbaugh is a demigod in Utah but the rest of the world sees him as a menace to society.
Go figure.

McCain is where he is because conservatives split the vote, because Huckabee, Thompson, and Romney split the vote on the conservative side, and he had the liberal-to-moderates all to himself. Thanks conservatives.

Romney didn't "drop out." He "suspended" his compaign. I understand there is a difference. Hopefully things go well for him in the future.

Of course McCain will pick a very conservative running mate.

I just wish we could get the truth out. Missionaries would have much greater success if the media wasn't dominated by a vast right ring conspiracy of radio talk shows filling the masses heads with mis-information

Letter to Mike | 7:07 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mr. Huckabee,
I truly see you for what you are. First A Baptist minister, Second a politician. The religious similitudes are quite telling. Mitt Romneys adds did not attack you. They attacked your position on the issues. I was disgusted when I watched the New Hampshire primary debate. Mitt Romney kept trying to stick to the issues while the rest of the candidates, You Mr. Huckabee included, slung personal attacks like mud from a stick. Mitt Romney has now left the campaign and if the talking heads are correct you will soon be running for the white house as VP with McCain. I challenge you to be the Christian that you claim to be and not the politician that I see you as and repair the damage that you have caused.

Ok all you despondent ones. To you gleeful ones already toasting a Democratic win in November. As a Romney supporter, and as much as I'd like to see him win the Republican nomination, it just isn't going to happen. If he runs third party, he'll almost surely give the win to the Democrats and I after todays CPAC speech, he wouldnt do it. If McCain wins the nomination, the win goes to the Democrats. So, what do you do? Swallow pride and consider that Huckabee now has the best shot at the Republican nomination if he picks up Romney's supporters and delegates. The only way he can do that is to have Romney endorse him and give him the VP spot. That moves McCain off the ticket and gives the conservatives a fair shot at winning in November. If Romney and Huckabee can lay aside differences, Republicans have a shot at the presidency for 16 years!

Mitt:

You are an incredible person. I am proud of your hard work and your class act!

If America wasn't so bigoted and would look at the issues you stand for, it could have turned out different.

I am disappointed, but not discouraged. Go for it in 2012!

Now we have to endure another Clinton in the White House...

it seems to me, that after reading some of the comments, that religious bigotry is alive and well ... take a good hard look in the mirror

"Romney didn't "drop out." He "suspended" his campaign. I understand there is a difference."

Good point. At McCain's age he could have a heart attack and therefore would have to drop out.

No candidate should drop out until the last dog is hung. The Huskster is doing the right thing by continuing.

So sad. Mitt was the only intelligent Republican. He wasn't afraid to take an unpopular stand on tough issues. He didn't cater to the masses making Jr. High promises to please everyone. To the critics I say educate yourself and quit living in ignorance. Our country is not the great power it once was. Mitt isn't in it for the money-he was in it to make this country great again. He has showed the very best quality and how a true American should behave. He makes Huckaby and McCain look dirty and foolish.
Christel | 8:06 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I am very sorry to hear, Mitt, that you withdrew from the Republican candidacy for President. I voted for you and felt you were the right man for the job. I hope you will reconsider 4 years from now! Didn't President Reagan make it on his first attempt either in 1976? I am very glad you ran in the campaign, people know much more about you now than they did a year ago. I highly respect your integrity and your decision to put your country first. Mathematically speaking, this was probably the right decision. However, I am not sure now for whom I shall vote in the fall. --- I wish you and your family all the best.

We LDS say we want people not to be judgmental of our religion, however, when Mitt so overwhelmingly took Utah it kinda looks like people might have been picking him for his religion. come on folks, pick the best candidate on the issues.

I do find it interesting that Romney is "suspending" his bid for the Presidency. What does that mean?

Re: Jim from IL Ricki | 8:59 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Jim, "Suspending" his bid means that he doesn't have to give up his campaign funds or his earned delegates. It is a terrible way to end a campaign. Edwards did the same thing.

I've seen quite a number of posters saying they will now vote for Obama since Romney's gone and they can't stand McCain or Hillary. As a gut reaction that might make you feel better initially. However, do you remember that both Hillary and Obama have said that if elected they will pull our troops from Iraq?; Hillary within 60 days and Obama immediately, if I'm not mistaken.

Without a doubt Iraq will absolutely implode which will:

1) Further SERIOUSLY damage our country's reputation around the world.....come to help remove a dictator, fight alongside them, walk away before they're ready to defend themselves. Is that the kind of international friend you want?

2) Encourage the terrorists from around the world to INCREASE their attacks against us, inevitably leading to further attacks/death right here on American soil. "Ah, America is soft after all. Get 'em...."

Not good.

And....remember that the next President will very, very likely nominate quite a few Supreme Court judges. These are some of the very same schmucks who have been destroying our conservative values.

McCain ain't Romney but he ain't Hillary or Obama either.

Sadly, for our own safety we need to hold our nose and vote McCain.

What? | 9:49 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Will any of you Romney haters please try to explain just why you thought he was "plastic"? Come on, give us some facts, some sort of statistic or specific example.....

So the guy is handsome and always looked professional. This is a bad thing? Would you prefer he had perpetually messy hair or no hair at all? Edwards was also a handsome man and looked physically sharp all the time and I don't recall ANY criticism of him being "plastic".

Come on, give us some specific reasons.

What you really need to do is admit that for some strange reason you were either jealous of his physical attractiveness or you've lived in the dredges of society for so long that you've convinced yourself that there just couldn't possibly be anything really and truly "good" in this world.

We're waiting.....

So many of these comments are mean. I am sad and have been since "super-Tuesday. Mitt Romney proved to me again today, that he is the finest person in the pack of candidates. Now it looks as if the Republicans are stuck with McCain. A career politician who gives me the creeps. As for religion, this Baptist was proud to have voted for Mitt Romney. His patriotism, intelligence and solid values warmed my heart. I was impressed with the way that he handled all the questions and criticisms of his faith. Mike Huckabee lost my vote for his insensitive comments about the LDS Church.
Mohan | 9:54 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Yes Utah voted for Mitt. Utah is what - maybe 60% Mormon, and admittedly not all Mormons voted for him. Yet he took 90%+ of the Utah vote. How does he do that? Doesn't sound like he only appealed to some Mormons, does it? Yet so many try to say it has nothing to do with his religion that he lost the other states. That sounds inaccurate. I would dare say that there is not one person who says it is not his religion that could name one other Mormon that they would support for President. There you go.
Dh | 10:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It is a shame so many people can't make intelligent comments. I guess they think they are being clever or funny by demeaning people.
Jeff | 10:08 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
The Republicans lost the election today. McCain is not capable of energizing the conservative base which is where the party workers come from. Moderates are not the ones who will knock on the doors. The Democrats are juiced up and the passion will not be there for a McCain/Huckabee ticket.
A Mormon for Obama | 10:03 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I find that with the exception on Obama's view on abortion, his views more accurately reflect my personal views. In fact, I vehemently disagree with Romney about the War in Iraq, the suppression of Civil Rights of Americans (The Patriot Act) and torture. Of the remaining three, Obama is the only candidate that instills hope. Yes we can!
Ami | 10:15 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Does anyone remember Mitt's true qualifications. He stepped in the 2002 Olympics and cleared the scandel. Made us feel safer even when the state hosted the world immediately after 9-11.

He was then immediately elected governer of his home-state. He has proven he is a problem solver, hard worker, family man with decent values; irregardless of his religious affiliation. Who cares what his beliefs in God are. We need to consider, CAN HE GET THE JOB DONE? I say "YES".

How sad that we are willing to listen to a hypocritial man such as Mr. Huckabee and just accept his ill-informed logic and out-right lies when it is said with malice and an intense desire for fame.

For this true-blue republican I will either be writing-in Romney or looking seriously at Obama. No other canidate seems any where near qualified.

The Mormon Church has "officially" said that they do not back any specific canidate for the presidential race.

We need everyone to grow a brain and study who is lying and is using deceit just for their own self-fame as president.

How sad I feel for whose who are unwilling to study the facts yourself.
Andy N | 10:16 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
The sad thing is that Mike Huckabee's campaign for Vice President is still going on.

Mitt will be remembered as the best President we never had. What grace, wisdom, and courage.

Thank you Mitt for making us proud. See you in 2012!

Founding Fathers were Masons | 10:25 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I am very disappointed with many within the Republican party and the mob-like tactics used to derail the Rommney campaign. There are countless successful LDS businessmen(and women), athletes, and hard-working Americans making a difference everyday without having to wear their religion as a scarlet letter. No one seems to mind when a LDS CEO takes their company to unequaled success, when Steve Young leads and inspires his team to multilple Super Bowls, or when the FBI actively recruit Mormons becuase of their integrity and moral center. Yet, we hear howls of "put a Mormon in the White House...never!" frankly makes my skin crawl. Our Founding Fathers (many of whom were Masons by the way) would remind those detractors to read the Constitution and actually believe what's in it! Do we really have so far to go yet before tolerance, inclusion and common-sense practicality is placed before ignorance, prejudices and fear.

I was talking with my daughter about Mitt suspending his campaign today. She asked why he did that and I explained about how he and Huckabee split the more conservative voters and McCain had all the rest to himself. Then I told her that another reason he dropped out was so it didn't upset the Republican Party any further.

I told her a lot of people were upset that now the only choice is McCain who is more liberal or the Democrat's nominee and that a lot of Republicans are now thinking of voting for a Democrat so they don't have to vote for McCain. I wasn't sure she understood all that until she replied, "You mean, because people don't want the one who is a little more liberal they would rather pick the one who is a lot more liberal?" Then she said, "It would be like going to the doctor and not wanting a shot. Then the doctor says you have to have a shot and so you say, 'If I have to have one shot then give me two."

Out of the mouth of babes...

She also asked why

I applaud Govenor Romney for taking the stance he did. A Democratic Presidency IS a vote for terrorism because they will pull our troops out of Iraq faster than one can count the soldiers that have honorably served there-leaving a mess behind and a vacuum that Al Qaida and others will be happy to fill. And, for the individual who implied Mitt has never worked a real job; get a clue! He was not given the opportunities in college and at work by sitting on his butt and having it handed to him on a silver platter - he worked his tail off to prove himself and better himself.
I find it sad so many are so spiteful and hateful of Mitt, his beliefs, his values, and his politics. Thank God for a constitution that gives the ignorant the opportunity to express themselves in whatever manner, and the military that ensures they have the freedom to do so.
Mitt would have been a great Chief Executive and Commander in Chief. I'll be writing him in on Election Day.
Really? | 10:47 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Hey Bruce Van Orden. You said that Mitt running had "hurt us (the Church) badly" and that now we can get back to what the mission of the Church "really is".

Apparently, you don't know that Brigham Young said (paraphrasing) that "every time our antagonists try to kick Mormonism down to hell they instead kick it up to Heaven". He also said "We could build up our church if only they would leave us alone. But, no matter, if they persecute us we'll just build it up all the faster".

Want something a little more recent? Are you aware that Pres. Hinckley told Mitt before he announced he was running for President that if he won, it would be a good experince, and if he lost, it would be a good experience too.

Still think it was a bad for Mitt to run? Have faith, brother! Those who truly love the Lord will find Him. There are 2 people in my office at work who know I'm LDS and having Romney run for President has sparked a TON of gospel related discussions. Get "back to work"?....just what did you think was occuring?

The caravan moves on!

A few of you are the most rude, disrespectfull, hatefull, bitter small minded people I have ever encountered. You do not like Mormons. We get it! Ok!
We have heard you over and over again. You complain and complain about Utah Mormons are mindless Sheep, sleep walkers who would glady drink Pink Lemnonaid or jump of a cliff at any Mormon in Authority request and never give it a second thought. If you wonder why we do not like some of you. Maybe you should look in the Mirror. And yes a few other churchs in Utah that tell their kids not to play with mormon kids because they will comtaminate their kids. Guess what guys? It goes both ways.If you do not like Mitt then fine he is no longer in the picture. Have enough manners to to gloat in private. We do not have to agree to get along. However a little respect from you might go a long ways to improving your experince in Utah.

YOU SAID: "Further SERIOUSLY damage our country's reputation around the world.....come to help remove a dictator, fight alongside them, walk away before they're ready to defend themselves. Is that the kind of international friend you want?"

Dude, nothing that the US can do will save this country's reputation. It was damaged long ago, but you may have missed knowing it. Just think as to why you think Tony Blair resigned and was considered as Bush's poodle by his own governing body. And they pulled back significantly from their support of the war.

Also, other US allies have begun to pull back last year.

Hence, other countries around the world have already regarded this war to be full of hot air, and that they want nothing to do with being a supporter of Bush's game, and left us as the fools that we are.

So, to actually save ourselves from further looking like an idiot everyday that the war continues, then we have to change the direction of this miserable failure.

So, according to your plan, you actually want the US to continue to act like the fools we are since Bush has come to power.

No thanks!

You wrote: "Can you imagine all of our tax dollars going to build more temples?"

No, I can't actually. You see, LDS temples are built using funds from the LDS temples, not public tax dollars. It's that whole "separation of church and state" thing....

Please, by all means, continue to embarass the Obama campaign.

Powerful words for Governor Romney today. And heart-breaking for Romney supporters who had no idea when they showed up this morning that their guy was stepping aside. But give the man credit; he went out with class. He put his concern for the future of the country before his own personal ambitions. You gotta respect that.

It'll be interesting to see if Mike Huckabee, in his scheduled CPAC speech on Saturday, likewise puts the national interest before his own personal interest.

Doubt that one. Huckamediawhore will continue talking about how funny and smug he is to any micraphone pointed his way.

Well I for once had good thoughts on Romney. Before Sup Tuesday I was hoping that he would do really well but that was not so. I was so looking forward to giving him support in my upcoming caucus. But I was saddened to see he suspended today! :(

I have read most of the comments. I believe everyone has freedom of their comments so I choose not to bash. :) But

I honestly cannot consider a Mccain/Hucky ticket. The last debate solidified a disgust for them both by attacking Romney :(

Now I should say that I have been a diehard independant that has leaned for dems always. I was really hoping the best for Romeny. I eagerly looked towards his positive outlook. Sure he flip flopped but we all do sometime. I voted for clinton for 2 terms I seriously cannot vote for them again. I am disgusted by the remaining republicans. So likely I will go with obama as a good hope. :) I would strongly encourage all mormons to pray for guidance on this matter. (you all know why)

Great Day: You said: "I guess you can't pay your way to being the president." Well actually, you can, and the candidates do. And you act like Mitt is the only one who has spent a gazillion dollars on this campaign. Guess again.
Sad Truth | 11:53 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Even with Romney out of the race, the Republicans will likely get the Utah votes (regardless of Democratic nominee) because of one simple fact. The majority of registered voters who actually vote are senior citizens. The majority of those tend to just vote party lines. When I went to vote in the primary election earlier this week, I'd say 60-70% of the people in line were over 60 years old. If they're anything like my grandparents, they don't read national newspapers, have an internet connection (let alone know how to use a computer), or watch national news. They limit themselves to the local viewpoints and when election time comes around, they just go in and vote straight party lines. Most have forgotten that the Republican party was *founded* to rid the country of it's two greatest sins....slavery and Mormonism. The shift from Democrat to Republican came on one single issue...abortion. Since it really isn't an issue anymore I really don't understand Utah being such a pro Republican state anymore. If the church were to be categorized into a party, the one it fits best (by its actions) is Democrat.

Mitt never had a chance, and he won't have any better chance if he decides to run in 2012,the "mormon" issue is not going to go away, there are simply to many "christians" who will always outnumber the saints and who will always be biased and refuse to support a mormon for potus.I don't know of any mormon who could run for potus and win...not one.
Mitt is smart | 12:17 a.m. Feb. 8, 2008
and he is totally clever in a game of winner take all. He has his delegates and he will not squander them. He loves his country and he will work for it's best interests. Mitt Romney is not through folks...he never quits a fight without having an alternative plan. His is no loser, wait and see. Maybe it will take Obama to get the country over this division which has occurred, but in four years the Presidency could well be Mitt's prize. The religion thing is about worn out and over. The anti-M's have nothing but the cursing left in their foul mouths and that signals an end to any influence they may have had.
NOTE: Amazing how many Mitt fans now look past McCain, who they don't admire and who they fear, now look toward Obama who carries little baggage and who came up from the Chicago south side slums to make something of himself. Sure he is liberal, so was the Savior of the World! And I think he tells the truth as he sees it, unlike Billary.
