Don't be fooled. We'll be in Iraq forever regardless of whether Hitlery, Barack (don't have a clever name for him yet), or McKill wins.
Suspending | 3:26 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Apparently by "suspending" his campaign Romney will keep the delegates he has won.

I voted for Obama, but could vote for McCain in the general election. Either Obama or McCain.

I could have voted for Romney if he hadn't pandered to the far right. People need to have a little compassion on e.g. the immigration issue.

I am LDS. Yes, Huckabee and his ilk are dangerous to religious minorities. However, McCain was playing the Mormon card even before Huckabee. It doesn't bother me. McCain just did it for politics. Huckabee did it on belief.

Please, fellow LDS, recognize that we are religious minorities. Stop clinging to the conservative right. Just vote for good people; yes there are a lot of good Democrats.

Who is Romney kidding? To actually believe that somehow the Republican party will be able to unite and somehow defeat Obama (By not winning on super Tuesday Hillary is toast) with McCain as the nominee is ludicrous. Besides when it all boils down to it the Republicans with any sense of pride will not vote for someone just because he has an R in front of his name. Look at the history of political parties and you will quickly find that parties have come and gone. It isn't like there has always been this apathy that taught that the party was more important then the messenger chosen to run for the office of president.

McCain will lose because of the possibility of more war and the expansion of the current war. He will lose because he is even more set in his ways then Bush. He will lose because he has too much baggage that the Democratic party can use to smear him in the campaing and further fragment the Republican party.

To Mary:

I completely agree. How do we do that? I heard a man say today he is going to write Mitt in on the November ballot. How does that work in today's electronic age and how can we make a 3rd party happen? Is it possible? I am just not sure. Having said that, I agree with you. There is NO ONE to repersent me! How disturbing is that??? I have no reflection out there of my views..

To To all Bigots 2:58 and to DAvid 2:58.. thank you, I also agree with you. I agree with Humptydumpty too. we may be sad some day for what happened to day.

Recess is over for all you cry babies on BOTH sides. Honestly, I think there needs to be a new game show called "Are You As mature as a First Grader??" . Too bad few on here would win. Time to grow up and stop the name calling and crying. Wipe your noses, pull yourself up by your high tops and get yourself a juice box. You'll be fine, so will Mitt, so will God and so will the country.
You Know.... | 3:26 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
it absolutely sickens me that there is so much hatred towards Romney on these blogs. Yes, even this Deseret News blog. I have seen sooooo much religous bigotry, misunderstanding (without even a hint of even TRYING to understand Mitt's positions), name-calling, denigration, ridicule, criticism, and scorn towards Romney. Makes me want to puke when I see fellow Americans absolutely RUNNING to tear someone down. And, it seems to me, that they almost laugh while they do it. I don't like McCain's temper and general disdain for Romney. I don't like how he (McCain) committed adultery (his own admission) while married to his first wife. I don't like how he lied about Romney wanting a firm "get out of Iraq" date 3 days before Florida's primary. I don't like how he refused to his political power to amend the Constitution to define marriage as being between a man and a woman, BUT I haven't attacked "him" personally. Romney, FAR MORE THAN ANY OTHER CANDIDATE, has been attacked personally. I just wish that those who have done such classless acts would reconsider their attitudes.

Having said all that....I hope for Mitt in 2012!

Quoting "Wake up Utah":
"No other faith is so controlling of the decisions its members make...from politics, to entertainment, to work. Wake up people!"

Excuse me, I'm LDS and I voted for Edwards (before he dropped out). The LDS church doesn't control anyone, they only establish guidelines. They tell us to prayerfully consider our choices.

Many LDS people chose Romney because they felt like they identified with him the most. They were voting for him on an emotional basis, just like how most Americans vote. LDS people are just more emotionaly attached to the church, while other Americans are emotionaly attached to various issues.

The only reason Huckabee stayed in was to take votes away from Mitt and help McCain. Now it looks like we will have a McCain and Huckabee ticket for the Republicans - Yuk. If looks like Obama in 2008.
Mitt is a good man. | 3:42 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Like many of you, I'm a convert to the church and for me, there is no greater blessing. A couple of months ago, I helped gather signatures for Mitt in one of the southern states. It was a lot of hard work and very frustrating at times because of the anti mormon wave. I never knew there was so much hate towards mormons. But every now and then, I found people who wanted to know more about us. If I recall correctly a dozen or so changed their attitude towards mormons. (I do not take credit for that.) I may never see those men and women again, but Im grateful that we ran into each other. So for me, all of this hate towards mormons is not such a bad thing. It has encouraged me to pray more often. Look at all of this as a great opportunity to do missionary work. Ah, the worth of a soul!

A: Thanks, all those are good thoughts.... I appreciate it. Perhaps you can make some people think more clearly.... good luck with that!

One more I might add. I would rather have a guy who uses his own money than one who uses mine!
Clueless | 3:40 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
A lot of you on this board are clueless. Mitt didn't lose because he was mormon and the others don't hate him because they are jealous. Mitt lost because he has been inconsistent and the other candidates have been able to use that against him. He doesn't have that much experience and fired the first shots with negative ads and aggressive campaigning tactics.

Only problem I had with Mitt was his sudden conversions the last couple of years on a lot of the issues. It comes off to me as someone trying to reinvent themselves into something they aren't.

I guess according to a lot of you who post here I am anti-Mormon because I didn't support Mitt. Nice to see the people crying about hate are equally as bigoted as the people they are accusing of doing it.

Mitt for 2012!
Observer | 3:42 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Now that Romney has dropped out of the race, many Romney supporters will have to decide where to place their allegiance. The problem is that many of them are Mormons. I know that many of Governor Huckabee's supporters believe that it would be un-Biblical to vote for a Mormon, and that Romney's Mormon faith disqualified him as a bona fide candidate for presidencey. My question is this: would it be un-Biblical to accept a vote from a Mormon?
Mitt really blew it. | 3:44 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
But guys...Mitt won Wyoming! He can still do it.
McCain's Racism vs Romney Flips | 3:54 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Whats worse? Having McCain's racist "gook mentality" in the White House or Romney's flip-flops.

I would venture a guess that Romney is truly conservative and probably did change some of his social stances towards gays (pandering) to be elected Mass. Governor in 2002. How else could Romney be elected in stuck-up New England?

The real Romney just ran for President but his past gubernatorial campaign record was the only negative that could be used against him.

Why wasn't McCain's past "gooks" record used against him? What? McCain changed his opinion. Why can't Romney change his?

But is this worse than McCain's anti-Republican stance on immigration, tax cuts and general Republican party cohesiveness?

McCain is the more dangerous of the two candidates to America.

One last thing: how is it that Utah's overwhelming support of the best conservative candidate bigoted? That's insane! These are just weak name-calling tactics by those Huckabee supporters realizing their mistake for dividing the conservative vote and allowing McCain to traipse into the nomination. Its Clintonesque spin tactics. I guess one Arkansas Governor learned from another! :)

Shame on you! Your "1000 year old bibles" taught you better than that!

Jesus weeps for your poor political choice.

I cannot believe the number of folks who say that now that Romney is out of the race they will vote for Obama. People - get out there are read and listen. Obama doesn't take a stand - 121 present votes versus ye or nay. The man is great with the rhetoric, but no substance. He would end up a puppet in Washington. His campaign didn't even get off the ground until big names and corporations began to back him. He has no organizational abilities at all. Just think what Washington will do to him. That's right vote for Obama and have Teddy and wonderboy John Kerry keep him in line with Democratic Party Central. Wise up folks - this is -again- about the Supreme Court. Think carefully before your make a rash decision out of spite.

You are very un-American as are a lot of the posters on this board who will vote against a person just because their guy didn't win. Very immature, childish and extremely pathetic. I guess you guys don't have any respect for the people who have fought, died, bled and served our country, because if you did you wouldn't make a mockery of our electoral process.

Thank you for your intersting and negative posting. It's nice to know someone who is not Canadian knows so much about our politics. Gotta say, I do agree with you somewhat. But why the hostility!!! And yes, we are still a country and doing fine. I don't remember attacking you country....hmmmm Oh well, we have the reputation of being polite.
The Romney Connection | 3:53 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Good bye, Mitt!

Your family history disqualified you!

Mitt's father, George Wilcken Romney, was chairman of American Motors Corporation from 1954 to 1962 and also President of the Detroit Stake, the western edge of which adjoined and provided interaction and friendship with Canadian Mission President, Thomas S. Monson.

Mitt's father then became 43rd governor of Michigan from 1963 to 1969, and a candidate for President in 1968. Polls in 1967 showed Romney the leader among rank and file Republicans, especially among the "moderates," but his campaign was tainted by the Churchs policy not allowing blacks to participate fully, as well as a stupid comment he made about being brainwashed in Vietnam.

His cousin was Marion George Romney, both of them having been born in Chihuahua, Mexico to parents who were fleeing anti-polygamy laws. A revelation was received on that topic, too.

Of course, Marion George Romney was first counselor in the First Presidency in 1978, and signed and announced "Official Declaration 2," the revelation on priesthood that removed the racial restrictions the Church had in place for over 100 years.

It appears revelation comes from personal experience and social connections.

To the anonymous who told non-Mormons and inactives to get out of Utah,
You are the one who needs to repent. You have just on a grand scale gone directly against the statement of M. Russell Ballard that people should never, even in just, suggest that people who disagree with the church and its teachings should leave Utah.
It is people like that anonymous who create such amounts of dislike in Utah. If everyone had his attitude all the mission in Utah would have to be closed. People in Utah, wake up and realize that in denouncing people just because they are not in the faith or just because they were not in church last Sunday you are acting like the Pharisees. You are doing dishonor to President Hinckley's memory. He often urged people to show kindness to those of other faiths and your comments are just reprehensible. If I were your bishop I would began proceedings to excommunicate you for unChristian conduct, which is probably why I am not a bishop, I am way too inpatient with peoples failings. Still, stop spouting hate.

Romney is a fake Mormon | 4:00 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Steve (2:49 p.m.), "Romney ran a nasty campaign and I am glad that he is now waving the white flag of surrender." I agree. Mitt Romney ran a "nasty", and hateful campaign. He also used the Church for his own political gain.

You wrote, "If Mitt Romney was not a Mormon he would not have the support of the Mormons because he doesnt represent true conservatism. I find it frightening how so many Mormons are willing to let their faith, not the substance and character of the man dictate how they vote. Romney is a crook, and Im glad he is out!!"

I agree with you whole-heartedly. Mitt Romney has demonstrated that he lacks character and substance. He has lied, changes his position every election he is in so that he is able to win. Such opportunism isn't reflected in the gospel of Jesus Christ. There are members who will let someone being a member of the Church influence their votes but good Mormons don't do this. The high percentage that Mitt Romney took in Utah reflects very poorly on Republican Mormons. I'm glad that I'm not a Mormon Republican and instead align myself with the gospel of Jesus Christ.

Wake Up Huckabee Supporters | 4:01 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I've read a number of comments in other online news rooms comments urging conservative Romney supporters to vote for Huckabee. No way! Never! Not in my lifetime! Romney suspended his compaign to hold those delegates from Huckabee. In the coming weeks Huckabee is going to experience a real throttling from GOP voters, and I believe many of you know it's coming. He's going to look so small in the eyes of the public as an unrealistic dreamer of becoming President, just like Ron Paul.

I didn't think the US was ready for a mormon president, there is just too much misinformation out there. I think he ran a good race and am proud of the fact that he apparently knows when to bow out. I plan to vote for Obama now, there's just something about McCain I don't trust.
Who Blew It? | 4:06 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I blame:

1st - McCain, for blatantly misrepresenting Romney just 3 days before the Florada primary by saying that Romney wanted a firm "get out of Iraq" date when in fact Romney NEVER advocated that. In the SAME Romney interview that McCain was claiming Mitt said "we need a firm timeline", Romney said he'd veto any legislation that contained a firm Iraq departure date. McCain new this (how could he have not?) but claimed it anyway. In short, McCain flat-out lied about Romney. Florida is a huge supporter of the military and to stab Romney in the back with so little time before the primary sunk Romney's chance of winning Florida. Had Romney won Flordia he would no doubt be the frontrunner today.

2 - Huckabee. Charismatic? Yes. Unselfish? Absolutely NOT! Had he dropped out of the race even just a few days before Super Tuesday, Romney would obviously have won a much, much larger portion of Tuesday's delegates and thereby weakened McCain's strength which would have likely led to a nominee being decided much sooner than a 3-man race.

3 - The mainstream media. How they think they reported "just the facts" on Romney is almost criminal.

Romney 2012!

Response to Clueless | 4:08 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Clueless: Your observations are not unfounded, as Romney's policy changes certainly did not help him. However, Evangelical bigotry played an even more significant role, and but for Romney's Mormonism he would still be in the race.

As to your suggestion that Mormons are comparable to Evangelicals when it comes to religious bigotry, my experience suggests otherwise. Mormonism allows for good to exist outside of the boundaries of its faith; the southern Evangelical movement offered no such concessions, and attempted to slay Romney with the "smooth, round stone" of their palpable contempt for the Mormon faith.

I'm a Republican and Mormon | 4:19 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Would the Mormons here quite crying that people didn't vote for Mitt cause he was Mormon?! I'm Mormon and I didn't vote for Mitt because he's a flip-flopping panderer with NO SUBSTANCE. And I KNOW that members of our church just voted for Mitt because he was Mormon because I've heard them say it! There was even a woman at the polls who said she was voting for Mitt because, he was "the only candidate who probably was following the Word of Wisdom." Can you believe that?! I think people need to take a quiz on the candidate's history and issues before they vote. And I'm sorry, but he got 90% of the vote! It makes us look like a bunch of sheep! I'm ashamed that so many of my fellow brothers and sisters wouldn't be able to see how fake and artificial Romney is. He was just a salesman (albeit he failed), willing to say what it took to pander to the extreme Republican Right. But for those who know his history, they know that Romney ran as a moderate Republican in Mass. and he transformed into a neo-conservative just before he ran for President. hmmmm...
Utah... | 4:15 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I'm pretty sick of everything hating Utah for always voting republican. There is a majority of like-minded people living here and republican beliefs and values most closely represent these people's beliefs and values. everyone should just lay off them. That being said, the idea of america is not to voting along party lines all the time. in george washingtons farwell address he warns the public of parties. James madison writes a whole paper on the danger of factions (aka parties). so maybe everyone should just grow up and vote for who will help make america the best it can be. For me that means not voting for McCain even though i am "republican". The idea is not to just vote for a party. Thats how they do it in the UK and it works terribly.

John Lambert | 4:18 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Just on the quoestion of Obama's religion. It was his step-father who WAS a Muslim. Obama is very much a Christian. The church he attends is a very pro-Africa Christian church, but it is Christian.
I also disagree with Van Ordens attacks on Romney. Just because you disagree with the positions someone takes does not make them morally wrong. We are to renounce war and proclaim peace, but you should also consider President McKay's teachings on when war is justified. We have a duty to stand against tyrany. This may not be enough to justify the war in Iraq, but we must accept that war can at times be justified.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?! You never saw his Faith In America speech, did you?

That speech, THAT ONE SPEECH, made me a Romney believer. I don't care who mocks me or calls me an idiot, but to those who are even remotely trying to walk in the path of righteousness, if you WATCHED the full 18 minute speech on TV or online, you could FEEL the Spirit of God illuminate your soul.

No, Mitt is not "better" than anyone else, but he was by FAR the only candidate that truly understood America's role in the world.

I've noted a lot of disparaging comments about John McCain. I really don't understand where those sentiments come from. I've researched his record and have watched most of the debates. Although I don't agree with all of his policies, I think that he has a sharp intellect and a distinguished service record. There appears to be a negative bandwagon that isn't justified. I would suggest that people really give him a chance.

This is true and those who used the Church to gain support for Romney were wrong to do so. The people who made the most of Romney's faith were Mormons who were willing to use the Church as a tool either to gain more support or condemn those who opposed Romney as bigots.

You write, "Only problem I had with Mitt was his sudden conversions the last couple of years on a lot of the issues. It comes off to me as someone trying to reinvent themselves into something they aren't."

This is less troubling then the convenience of doing so. He did it when he ran against Senator Kennedy in Massachusetts, for Governor of Massachusetts and then for President. You have to understand that those accusing others of being bigots are the bigots.

Neither George Romney nor Marion Romney had parents who went to Mexico to flee anti-polygamy laws. It was grandparents. A big difference, maybe not, but it still is one.
Anyway, remember Spencer W. Kimball was also married to one of George and Marion's cousins, and Henry B. Eyring is the son of one of their cousins. Personally I don't see the point in bringing this up and would not say that these connections have any bearing on Official Declaration 2. It was actually N. Eldon Tanner who announced it, and you will have to try really hard to see him connected with the Romney's.
Well, I know it was a revelation from God because I have felt the Holy Ghost testify of its truthfulness, that is the only way to really know.
McCain best friends with Mormon | 4:32 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
McCain-Romney Ticket? (4:22 p.m.), "there is no way Romney will make it into the White House as anything. McCain is too thick to see past Romney being a mormon and realize Romney is an American."

McCain was best friends with a Mormon Democrat who mentored him in the Senate so I doubt that McCain won't choose Romney because he's Mormon instead he's not going to choose him for the same reason so many Americans didn't. Which is because he lacks character and integrity and would bring dishonor to the Office and to the Church that McCain respects. Your comments are another example of people using the Church as a political tool and you should be ashamed.

I will be voting for Obama because I believe he's the most qualified candidate yet I also believe that people attacking McCain are wrong to say that he has issues with Romney being Mormon. He doesn't care if Romney is Mormon. Romney is just a nasty, horrible man like so many of his supporters and it has nothing to do with his being a member of the Church. Good people and bad people like Romney belong to the Church. It can't be helped.

Yes, I'm a Mormon and I voted for Mitt, but I voted for him because he salvaged the Olympic mess we had in Utah and he made a profit for the State. He comes from a family of "class" politicians and he gets things done! He is smart, moral, and patient. I would have lost my cool many times with the lies that McCain & Huckabee threw at him that just were not true. I'm glad he had the guts to defend himself. I'm also proud I voted for him and I think America is now the Biggest Loser. If he ever chooses to run again he has my vote. Unlike the true flip-flopper, McCain, Mitt had the decency to evaluate situations and if he recognized that his position on an issue was outdated he was courageous enough to admit that he should change. I'd hate to think I lived my whole life with the same opinions in my 60's as I had in my 20"s. I certainly hope I have learned some things along the way.

I also can admit that now I don't have a candidate. Sorry you're gone, Mitt, we needed you!
