Do you honestly believe Romney is the only one who's spending money in this campaign? Maybe the other's are getting their publicity for free? You sound like another jealous loser who envies those who have the intelligence and ability to make money the old-fashioned way: by working for it. (Unlike McCain who married it and and Clinton who stole it).

Please everyone leave Mitt alone with your rude comments. I have supported Mr. Obama, however I feel Mitt is a great american anyone that runs for that job has to be. Mitt spent his own money put his family on the line spent time with so many americans. He does not deserve to be ran in the ground with nasty rude comments. I just want to say: THANK YOU Mitt, GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

Well it's all over. The writing was on the wall even before Mitt Romney decided to run for the Republican Presidential nomination. Now

Throughout all the morphing and shape-shifting, position changes and winking, he has joined Rudy Giuliani among the also-rans of the political struggle. Now it appears that he is positioning himself for an alliance with John McCain with his Bushie statement of supporting whatever it takes (whatever that means?) to "win" in Iraq.

Iraq was a gross mistake. Costly in valued American lives and lucre finance through the largess of China. Too bad he doesn't have the sense of his father and take a path that can bring all Americans together rather than stretch the fault lines of Bush/Cheney divisiveness. Rather than move forward, he became a Bush clone.

Anyway, he's gone and no tears will be shed over his decision. Perhaps this is the price he pays for his strategy to get in bed with the evangelical Right and kiss up to the neo-con wingnuts making the loud, overbearing noises that have redefined American "democracy" (small "d") as a nation of totalitarian-like practices including domestic spying, supporting torture, and establishing the so-called unitary executive or dictator.

When I heard this I got a sick feeling in my stomach. We finally had someone who could
help fix the country and we ran him out. I am seriously concerned about the future of our country...economically, the war, we may be in for a real eye opener.

Mitt, thank you for saving the country and leaving the race for President! Now enlist in Church service and go on Mission!

...all of you who say romney waffles, will please be more specific about the 'waffle' issue, such as dates and a voting record...
Justin | 12:45 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
We should still vote McCain, as painful as that will be, because he's still better than the democrats. It won't matter though because he won't win.

Mitt 2012!

Where can I buy a bumper sticker that say's,

"Don't blame me,I voted for Romney".

When you get it, make sure you place it next to your "Blame me, I voted for Bush" sticker.

Lets form a new party that is really conservative. But, find me a candidate willing to put up with this crap. That is rich enough, smart enough and willing to put his family and money to the side for America's good. Good luck, I think he just left the building.
matt | 12:43 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I'm mad that I wasted my vote on Mitt. I should have voted for Ron Paul. I am really angry at Mitt for dropping out. I wanted him to go to the convention. No way I'm voting for McCain, even if Romney is VP. Mitt proves himself to be an MBA to the core. It would take a sea-change for me to support him again.

Who even reads this stuff?

Maybe now all the deadly weather will stop in all the states that supported Huckabee.
Mani | 12:43 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
So who do you vote for? Certainly Clinton is off the page, and Obama's "change" with no specifics as to how he would make them - doesn't make any sense. Being a naval pilot does not qualify one, such as McCain, to be Commander in Chief. Clinton has been involved in Whitewater and other sleeze. Obama, while articulate and with charisma has no real experience. Is he the first black. He's half white, so how does that make him black? Romney while presenting a conservative image, really did flip flop on the issues. He was negative too many times because his stands were political and not based on religious principles that he should have expoused and understood what his church taught, especially after srving as a bishop and stake president. His comments on polygamy, prophets & revelation, gays and abortion were political and not principle based. True, he had the experience that none of the contenders had with economics. I believe his stands on relgious principles and his changing opinions sank his ship!

I agree with you! Let's unite our country with someone who is honest and has integrity. Now that Mitt is gone Obama in '08. YES WE CAN!

Hillary wins the nomination for President. Naturally, she wants to choose as her running mate someone with knowledge and experience in government and foreign affairs, some seasoned campaigner who could bring strength to the ticket. Who better than Bill, her husband?
Hill and Bill go on to win the election in November and the Democrats maintain control of the House and the Senate. Hillary is sworn in as President on January 20, 2009. The next day, she calls a press conference to make an announcement: she is resigning as President! Bill, as the Vice President, immediately becomes President!!! This is all perfectly legal under the 22nd Amendment to the Constitution, for it states that "no person may be elected as president more than twice". Bill is not being elected for a third term but is merely serving out the remainder of Hillary's term---all 4 years of it.5. But wait! There's more! following day Bill calls a press conference to make an announcement. He has chosen someone to fill the now-vacant office of Vice President. Guess who he picks? Why,Hillary, course!!! And she would still be able to run for president again!!!

Just for you IGNORTANT Anti-Mormons who think the church controls it's members, can any of you tell me how many of the past prophets and apsotles were Democrats? and what position James E. Faust held in the Democratic party of Utah. Going even further, when did the leadership of the Mormon church ever tell the members who to vote for? I'd like a specific date and reference please.

YIPPEEEE HIP HIP HOORAY Now there will NOT be a Mormon in the White House! Thank you God...my prayers are answered!

I just watched Mitt's propaganda laced resignation speech. Same old fear tatics about how terrorism is going to invade our country. If we spend our money on our security that we are spending in Iraq we will be just fine. Let's see some participation in this war on terrorism from other peaceful nations and country's for a change. They too have concern in this, so let them step up and we will give help only when we see their involvement.

I see Utah voting democratic in November. I don't know a singe republican who prefers McCain to the democratic candidates.
Anonymous | 12:56 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
McCain as a one term President (age) to kick some butt in the middle east. Romney as a one term Vice Preisdent then the big job.

Thismay have cured some of the bad blood between McCain and Romney.
Bury Mitt | 12:52 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Here lieth the campaign of Mitt Romney, victim of the mistaken belief that the only way to succeed in national Republican politics was to turn yourself into something you are not. Or maybe the campaign revealed what his closest friends never imaged him to be. They thought he was a decent classy guy. But maybe he really is a soulless throat-cutter who would do and say anything to win.

Disillusioned | 12:53 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Huckaphony and McCain entered into an agreement to thwart Mitt's victory. I hope they can sleep at night. When McCain appoints his liberal judges to the Supremem Court this country and everything it stands for will disentigrate.
Too bad there is such hatred for people who love their country and are trying to help their fellow man.
Romney Supporter | 12:58 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I think that Mitt Romney is a great man and I just wish the rest of the country would realize how great of a leader he would be for our country. I hope that he will run for the next presidential election.
Too disingenuous | 12:58 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Maybe this will teach Mitt to be honest with himself and not careen to the hard right for the sake of politics. At least McCain is consistent.

Thank goodness, something he should have done a year ago!
To Wake Up Utah | 1:01 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I feel sorry for you! You have absolutely no idea what the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, also known as "Mormon Church" is all about. Maybe you should read the Book of Mormon, pray about it, and your heart might be softened to the point where you will not be so bitter and angry. If your anger comes from knowing a person you don't like who was a Mormon - get over it!.
Dale Christensen | 1:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
A bit over a year ago the following letter was published as a letter to the editor of the Des News.

"Slim chances for Romney

I read Ryan Jenkins' "My View" with interest (Jan. 7). While he suggests that Mitt Romney's membership in the LDS Church should not be an issue in the election, he fails to mention where much of the faith-based opposition comes from. It is widely believed that no candidate can win the Republican nomination without support in the South. Southern Evangelicals consider the LDS Church to be a cult in the same style as the Branch Davidians from Waco or the Jonestowners who drank poisoned Kool-Aid. These are the same people who denied a Mormon girl the right to say the school prayer at a football game in 1995 because she was not Christian enough.

While I wish Mr. Romney luck, it seems unlikely he has a chance as long as he seeks the nomination in a party dominated by social conservatives with evangelical roots.

Dale J. Christensen
West Jordan"

People responded about how he could win in the south. He failed to win in the south.

Get out of Utah to see reality, I did.
A Concerned American | 1:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints prohibits use of its' membership lists, publications, buildings or pulpits for political use. "We believe in being subject to Kings, Presidents, rulers and magistrates in obeying, honoring and sustaining the law." We are ALL children of God first, with 13 million members worldwide. Did Mitt say he did not accept a salary as Governor & would not as President? Did he earn his wealth? What experience did athletes relate with volunteers in Utah at the Olympics- which he helped save? Did he not serve his country in International ways by doing this?Is not a write-in vote or stay-away vote TRULY a vote cast for 4 yrs Democrats? What percent of personal income in countries like Sweden goes to taxes for the benefits derived? We may never have a chance to find out now what plan we could have derived instead which used Free Enterprise and personal choice, vs. what we will face now? It is easier to tear down what another has built. I am so sorry to hear the anger & animosity from some of you. How does it go about catching flies? I feel sad today for all Americans & Mitt.
Lari | 1:02 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
For you Republicans who say you'd rather vote for a democrat because you don't want to see a Republican ruin our country and the Republican Party, just so you know, you already elected a Republican to do that... and he's got a year left in the White House.
Anonymous | 12:57 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I don't agree with a lot of McCain's politics but I do believe that he can be the one to possibly get the two sides of congress together and maybe get things done. Although I backed Bush, things aren't getting done in Washington because the Dems are pushing as far left as possible and the Repubs are trying to push as far right as possible. Now I'm a very conservative person but I'm also pragmatic. The liberal Dems are not going to do anything in Washington to help us Americans unless they can come to agreement with the conservatives. McCain is more of a centralist. Since the U.S. is made up of many demographics congress has to represent all. I know that I would like to see only my view represented but that doesn't mean that your view is going to be represented. Some how both our views need to be represented. This is what America was built on. Not my view only. That would be a dictatorship, and we know how that always plays out.
tim | 12:58 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Come to think of it, ironically, even after dropping out, Romney still has a better chance of becoming a President than others still in the race. Lets say McCain loses the general election, he wont be able to run again in 2012, or ever (just ask Chuck Norris). Romney on the other hand still has more chances - and good ones - considering he is presently the leading candidate and standard bearer for the GOP in 2012 & 2016.
No Agents of Intolerance | 12:58 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I hope that Utah Mormons have enough self-respect to "just say no" to any ticket that includes Huckabee. His fanning of the flames of bigotry of southern Evangelical Republicans -- who will never vote for a Mormon but very much take for granted your automatic Republican vote -- was one of the most unseemly acts in modern U.S. politics.
St. George | 1:03 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Now is the time to get behind McCain, unless the ticket has Huckabee for VP, then that should mean the whole of Utah vote for HILLARY!!!!

Huckabee says Mormons are not Christians and he is a bigot, so maybe it is time Utahns turn to a more mainstream Democratic party.

Anonymous 12:44 | 1:05 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mitt bet it all on this one, and nearly everyone in Utah took those odds. Tied it all to faith publicly, in less direct tones to his faith specifically, and everyone told us he was the best candidate.
Kind of a nasty swipe, his suggesting that a clinton or obama win somehow is good for 'terror'.
Oh, well. Ya did good, mitt, even if only to show us here again that all the smug righteousness we live amidst here in utah is actually disconnected from the reality out there beyond the curtain. You also served up a lot of crow to needy folks today.
But, what will the desnews cover now?
PATRICIA RAY | 1:03 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
It is too bad that Mitt Romney could not make it, I am sorry that we in Texas did not get a chance to vote for him, but he is right, it is most important that neither Clinton nor Obama is elected president. I do not agree with everything that McCain says but do feel he is better than the other two.
To Obama voters | 1:04 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
For all of the reactionists that say they will vote for Obama, read Romney's speech announcing his withdrawal from the race. A vote for Obama will mean a vote for bringing the troops home and a vote for a much more dangerous world with attacks on America and Europe from safe havens for Terrorists in a chaotic Iraq and middle east. Not to mention the quadrupling of taxes to pay for government-run health care that Obama proposes. Take a deep breath and vote for the "lesser of two evils," John McCain.
Jersey Boy | 1:07 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Thw US doesn't deserve a man like Mitt.
Now we have:
Juan McCain, great family values, ask wife #1 and family #1
Clinton, no family values and a husband that can't stay away from other women
Obama, an undefined vision with absolutely no experience in anything, hey but a great speaker?
God Bless the USA, we need it
Great Day | 1:07 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I'm so happy that Mitt decided to get on his white horse and get out of the election that he had no business being in.

To everybody that supported this guy - please do everyone a favor and move to either Florida or maybe it's time to move to Missouri.

To say that he has such high integrity is a joke - all you that jumped on his bandwagon simply because he was mormon should just be ashamed of yourself. Where is his integrity....when he ran for Governor he was basically a liberal democrat - now he is captain conservative....please give me a break.

Where is the next winter Olympics?? maybe he could move there and "save" them.

GOOD RIDDANCE Mitt - you will not be missed.

Texas Ex

You make very good comments and that is exactly what we should do, hand the GOP a defeat and teach them a lession.

Bush lied to Nevada about Yucca Mountain to win, hopefully they will remember that too. Then two of the red states the GOP takes for granted can make a point---we are sick of them letting us down.

My daughter asked me who would be the nominee and I said McCain. She's not arguing with me today.

Do I like my choices? Not today nor yesterday.
John | 1:09 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
Mitt Romney is a class act because he bowed out due to poor performance? Sure, if he kept running it would hurt the Republican party--but that's not why he left the race. He left because McCain blew him out of the water the other day. I don't for a minute fall for Romney's "class act" any more than I believed Hillary's tears.

And those of you who plan to write Romney in when it comes time to vote--that's your freedom of choice. But I hope by then you have had a chance to determine how to act in a more productive, constructive way to vote. At least to consider the possibility. If after that writing in Romney is to maintain your integrity, then I support your decision.

Gobama!
dice1899 | 1:14 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
People keep saying they weren't voting for Mitt just 'cause he's Mormon, but 'cause of his stances on the issues... but his stance changed every time he spoke to a different group of people. His views on torture, war, immigration, abortion, stem cell research, etc., either currently go, or have gone in the past, against LDS teachings. His past voting record was far more liberal than both Guiliani and McCain, yet he was somehow seen as the conservative nominee? No, McCain's voting record over the years has been solidly more conservative than Mitt's ever was. Look up the votes, they tell the truth.

And since when do the Democrats equal terrorists? They're not the enemy, they just have different ideas and ways of voting than conservatives do.

I am heartsick at the way this has all turned out. People say that what has happened is 'just politics'. If this is what 'politics' has come to in this GREAT country, count me out!!
Romney had no agenda other than love of his country. The pundits set out to derail him from the very first. It's indeed a SAD day for America!! Bring on the Second Coming. Only the Lord will be able to straighten all this out.

Even if Romney was the best conservative choice for 2008- people are SICK OF CONSERVATIVES !
chocomomma | 1:13 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
I was sickened and sad when I heard Romney suspended his campaign. I still am. Guess the country will have to get worse in these next four years before it can get better. I will probably write his name in on the ballot. I can't stomach any of the other 4 liberal choices. I can't support the possibility of McCain being President. I'm still gonna have Romney on my desktop. TRUE STRENGTH FOR AMERICA's FUTURE!
ROMNEY 2012! GO MITT GO! WE LOVE YOU!

To all of you haters: You are truly the most anti-Christian,. despicable people out there. You are petty and jealous. Someone on here said we may really live to regret the treatment Mitt Romney has received. I agree. It has been a disgusting display of so-called Christianity. I dont care what you call yourself, but if you don't reflect those beliefs, it is no good. Shame on all of you who are so full of hate that you cannot literally see straight. You will regret your actions at some future time.

To "Wake up Utah" it shows what you DON'T KNOW about Utah Mormonds. To "Texas ex" Where Hillary goes Billary goes and that we don't want in the White House. That was the most distasteful 8 years of my life with those two in. More items were stolen from the White House by Hillary(things that did not belong to her). I guess she just wants to go back and complete her theft. The Clinton's have proven over and over they CANNOT be trusted. Why would you ever consider voting for a person with no integrity. Got me!!!!
GO OBAMA! | 1:17 p.m. Feb. 7, 2008
There are only two choices in our family. Either it was Mitt Romney or none of the others. I think for us we are now looking towards Obama and going democrat. He looks like the better guy for the job. However, I cannot tolerate that bellowing Hillary Clinton, besides who wants her philandering husband running our country again. So we will take the young half black/ half white Obama who has indeed had a real life. He is the one!
