Utah pleased with 'balanced' class

Balanced Class? | 10:36 a.m. Feb. 7, 2008
How is this recruiting class balanced? Only three defensive signees, two lineman and one safety. Who is going to fill the void at DE, LB and CB? It worries me as a Ute fan that we can't get a single signee out of Hawaii. this pipeline has been our lifeblood in the past.

Congratulation to the Utes (and BYU)on another great recruiting class. Rankings at Scout and Rival are all about total points. . .AKA warm bodies. SCOUT had BYU ranked #60 and Utah #64 on points. A better gauge is Average Stars or the quality of the player. When you rank teams by Average Stars (quality) Utah moves up to #42 on Scout's ratings w/ an average of 2.80, while BYU moves up to #50 w/ ave of 2.58. For Rivals the "quality" of recruits has Utah @42 (2.97) and BYU moves up to #55 (2.52). Ain't this fun?

You have to consider the scholarships awarded to walk-ons and returning missionaries. There are 15 "new" Utes in this class, but this recruiting class has more than 15 players. Go back and read the earlier articles.

We don't have holes at LB or in the secondary, and we picked up a great DE in Kruger (even if he moves to DT, that frees up our DE playing DT to return to DE).

Our LB corps is a little thin, but we have lots of young talent, led by Sylvester and Martinez. Our secondary is loaded with Johnson, Rice, Dale, Cole, McCain, Richard, Smith, Stanford (that's 8 returning players with significant experience) plus Chapman. Many of those are Juniors next year, so we've still got a lot of time to recruit replacements.

Hey (Un)Balanced. You don't have to consider scholarships awarded to RM's and walkons. You don't count redshirts either as all (except for walk-ons) have been accounted for, and rated, in earlier classes.
