give them all the rights of my children..you know the ones I qualified and payed
for legally...someone's always got their own agenda. Just have Mexico pay
for their books at least, and their health care if you dare as they seem to be

Why punish kids who want to go to college and make something of themselves?
This bill will be a net loser since people with college degrees make more money,
and will pay back their education bill through taxes.

If Utahn's are of a mind to subsidize the children of illegal aliens by
granting them "in-state tuition", they must realize they are
incentivizing criminal behavior. They can pussy-foot around the issue all the
want, but the fact is they are encouraging countless others to immigrate to Utah
so they can avail themselves of Utah's largesse.
It's true we're a nation of immigrants but our ancestors did it legally, not by demanding citizenship and expressing contempt for the rule of law because of some perceived inherent "right". Many Latinos consider this is "their" land and that we are usurpers. Granting "in-state tuition", driver's licenses, welfare, free medical care, food stamps and other benefits to these characters rewards their contempt and promotes their perception we are weak and, in a Darwinian way, deserve to be overthrown.
If the Legislature wants to feed into this dimentia, have at it. They'll reap the just rewards of their spineless behavior.

These illegal alien Mexican and other foreign naationals are not in the country
by invitation or approval of any government and they have no authority or rights
to interfer with the system of government in the United States. This coalition
of illegals wanting a better life in America better become americans first. They
deserve no benfits or assistance from the american tax paying citizens. They
deffinetly do not deserve or belong in our education system that specifically
requires citizenship or legal entry in to this country. Pass this law and many
more like it and discourage these illegals from being in this country. Pampering
and aiding them will only add to the burden of the american people and the
american people rights to have and hope for the better way of life these
illegals are stealing from them. These illegals thrive on lies, deception,
theft, and deciet and it has gone on long enough. Time for our representatives
to stand up to these illegals and tell them to get lost and forget the american
dream. The dream of victimizing and defruading the american people of billions
of dollars a year must end, this is a start.

It isn't right that these children are penalized for the sins of their
parents. These students some of them don't even know they are undocumented
until they are about 15 years old and find they can't work because they
don't have a social security number. The ones who are in college, have
high aspirations and having them here will benefit our community and our
country.
I know this argument is getting old, but our founding fathers were violating the "law of the land" which was British law at the time they declared independence. Mexico did have immigration requirements in the 19th century. Before they allowed Texans to move there there had to be an agreement made that those coming in to Texas would agree to be subject to Mexican law. Mormon pioneers did not get permission before moving into this valley, which was Mexico at the time. Yet we honor both of these groups of people by celebrating the 4th and 24th of July. Given that we honor these people, for their very acts of violating the law, we can show compassion to the children of people who are here without documentation.

into the system? Why would people who haven't paid taxes get a

It's the same pattern as inside the Beltway. The people want something
done about illegal aliens and the politicians want to perpetuate the problem.
The problem with state legislatures is that you have to go back and live in your
communities. All you ag-biz people and labor unions better get out your
checkbooks now and show your support. If you don't the pols just might
think about the wishes of the people they represent. The problem with giving in
to special interests is that the Internet has given voters LOOOOOONG memories
and you could look like you are representing illegals rather than voters. That
wouldn't look so good.

The above federal code is the basis for the argument against instate tution rates to criminal illegal aliens - while charging out-of-state citizens over $39 million a year in non-resident fees.

Then ask your state legislator how they can vote against this bill!

I do not understand why an ILLEGAL immigrant should be granted in state tuition?
why should they pay less than a student from Arizona or California who is a
LEGAL citizen? Why should they even be allowed to attend our colleges and
universities without obtaining legal status? the cost of tuition does not cover
the cost of their education. I am a legal citizen of the United States, and if
my daughter wants to attends a state school in Washington or California, the
tuition is double for her. Thus, she attends a Utah university. why should
illegal immigrants get the advantage of in state tuition over my daughter who is
a citizen? I applaud the state legislators who are attempting to add some sanity
to this.

I can't believe how heartless some of you people are. These are human
beings, and they deserve the respect of being treated as such. These kids were
either born here or brought over as small children or infants, and have lived
their entire lives in the United States. Why should they be punished and
prevented from having any sort of a future because of the crimes of their
parents? And you know what? Their parents risked their lives, and their
family's lives, sometimes more than once, to come to a better place, and to
make a better life for their chilren. I don't agree with their coming over
illegally either, but I do have compassion for them. These kids are already
facing enormous challenges to make something of themselves, why take away one of
their only chances because of something they had no choice in doing in the first
place? These are children of God, and they deserve compassion, not judgement and
ostricism.

I am tired of hearing that these children are victims. they enjoy the freedoms
of this country illegally, and expect us to subsidize their college. they are
not victims and they are not innocent. they may have been brought here without
their consent, but the life they have here is better than from where they came.
this is about whether we subsidize their education. my children, who are
citizens of this country, have to pay out of state tuition if they attend a
college in a state where they are not residents. no one seems to blink an eye at
that. we can't afford to send them to an out of state college. Why should
US citizens be required to pay higher tuition for attending an out of state
college and people here illegally from another country pay less. i am tired of
the whining liberals spending my tax money. let's use the taxes that we pay
to educate the children of those paying taxes, not those who tax the system. if
these "kids" are so desrerving, why aren't they offered a
scholarship? maybe the liberals who want to provide for their education should
start an "Undocumented Scholarship Fund".

I'm saddened that so many "progressives" seem to be FOR the
breaking of our immigration laws. During the last huge immigration wave (legal
by the way), progressives understood mass immigration drives down the wages of
lower income workers. During this mass wave (much of it illegal) the
progressives don't seem to care about lower income American workers. Their
hearts bleed for illegal aliens, not fellow citizens. Of course, the Ford
Foundation has pumped millions into various pro-illegal groups over the past
couple of decades. These groups have in turn created the multi-culturalism cult
and claim Americans are inherently inferior and racist. This allows
multi-national corps. to ignore our immigration laws. When patriotic Americans
cry foul, the well financed left/progressives cry "racists." This
allows the flow of illegals to continue, further hurting lower income workers
and fattening the wallets of multinationals. Very sad!

We do need an low cost work force to compete with China, India, our economy will

You guys are really great people. I especially love how you always make sure
that you are never being put out by someone else. Gotta love people who always
take care of number one. What is the big deal here? These immigrants are here,
they aren't going anywhere, why not make it easier on them. I'm sure
none of you are decendants of immigrants to the US, right? If you the way Utah
tried to help otehrs dot he same thing all americans did 100's of years
ago, go somewhere you can be happy. I'm fully prepared to assume that

etc., they will keep coming. Take away ALL incentives and they have no reason to
come. If they know their children will get nothing for free or at a discount
that may discourage them from putting their children in a difficult position.

Impeach the man who tells the Immigration and Customs Enforcement agency of the Federal Government. Call your Congressman and demand they Impeach Bush for the high crime of failing to protect our borders and enforce immigration law.
Maybe Impeachment would send the appropriate message to the business owners that utilize this shadow workforce.
Until you have called your congressman demanding impeachment, you have no right to complain avout not enforcing the law.

Cudos to those forces in the Legislature who are willing to put humanity before
the cold letter of the law. Many of these students have been here ever since
they can remember. They are as much American as you or I. Actually their
ansestors were here thousands of years before Columbus. They deserve a chance

Yes, we must think of the victim children. Let's resolve to release anyone
from prison who happens to have a child. It isn't the child's fault
that Dad or Mom broke a law. Why should the child be denied the right to have

because of the sins of their parents.
No-one is advocating denying them the opportunity to go to college. However, they should not be allowed to benefit/profit from illegal activity. A repeal of this benefit is appropriate and fair. Claiming that such a repeal would be punitive is a disingenuous and dishonest argument. Those who make it are playing to our emotions and can not give rational reasons for their position.
Since those availing themselves of the lower rate are fairly small in numbers, perhaps our soft-hearted Guv would care to finance them himself with his money instead of ours.

Many of their parents pay taxes at a higher rate than we do, since they are
unable to file a tax return to get their extra withholdings refunded each spring
like we do. And when we all get our $600 rebate checks this year, they
won't be finding any in their mailboxes. There are (unfortunately) so few
students who actually take advantage of this opportunity, it seems a very small
price for our community to pay to do the right thing and give some kids a break.
And won't it benefit all of us to have more educated kids?

Thanks for making my point by displaying your ignorance of the law.
Going to High School has everything to do with it because it exposes the ignorance of those who make the claim that "illegals" get better treatment or "more rights" than out-of-staters. Attending three years in a Utah high school and graduating from a Utah school are two of the requirements to be eligible for resident tuition. Obviously, out-of-staters aren't meeting that requirement so they AREN'T in the same situation as undocumented students (whose families, BTW, work and live here and who ARE paying local taxes to support public universities.)
Regardless of how the rabid anti-Mexicans make it sound, an undocumented student can't just show up on day one of classes and be eligible for resident tuition. Furthermore, any legal resident who meets the same requirements that "illegals" must meet would also be eligible for resident tuition. So please, do tell, how are the "illegals" getting "more rights" than the rest of us?
And please, turn off the CAPS lock. Or are you trying to yell?

Going to High School has everything to do with it because it exposes the ignorance of those who make the claim that "illegals" get better treatment or "more rights" than out-of-staters. Attending three years in a Utah high school and graduating from a Utah school are two of the requirements to be eligible for resident tuition. Obviously, out-of-staters aren't meeting that requirement so they AREN'T in the same situation as undocumented students (whose families, BTW, work and live here and who ARE paying local taxes to support public universities.)
Regardless of how the rabid anti-Mexicans make it sound, an undocumented student can't just show up on day one of classes and be eligible for resident tuition. Furthermore, any legal resident who meets the same requirements that "illegals" must meet would also be eligible for resident tuition. So please, do tell, how are the "illegals" getting "more rights" than the rest of us?

Even though the illegal parents are responsible for the kids attending school in
Utah, we still cannot afford to subsidize in any way the families of illegals in
Utah--that would just keep them coming.

Despite the "3-year requirement" in this illegal alien tuition policy,
there is a nuance that gives illegal aliens more rights than children of Utah
residents. If a Utah High school graduate leaves the state for a certain period
of time, they lose their residency and have to pay out-of-state tuition, despite
the fact that they completed 3 years of high school here. This can happen for
military service and in some cases Missionary service (ie if they spend 3 years
living with a Mission President parent)
An illegal alien is not bound by these rules and never loses this benefit since this law only applies to them, with the only requirement that they complete 3 years of High school. I can't believe all of the people who want to through taxpayer dollars to educate illegal aliens who cannot even legally get a job.
Any business that purposely hires illegals runs the risk of a raid, like the one in Lindon today.

needs a course in Latin American History and a review of Immigration in America.
I don't intend to live in a European country,I have Dutch, Irish, and
English blood in me. I know my history. Maybe you should go live in a third
world country for a few months and maybe that will change your dissonant tune.

After living in South America was I eligible to attend school as a citizen there would have been eligible? NO I wasn't. I wasn't even eligible to take the entrance exams.
Parents are responsible for the care and well being of their children. If these parents choose to bring their children over here knowing full well that these children are not allowed to work or study here then the parents should be held responsible.
How can a parent say they love their child and put their child in that situation?
How is it humane to allow them to get an education that they are not allowed to use? Now that is inhumane and cruel.
Los Angeles Times ran a story regarding students who had graduated from UCLA but can't use their education. They weren't very happy!

Like it or not these people are here. And unless you want to have a underclass
here that is uneducated and ailenated, we need to give these kids who grew up
here opportunities or we are undermining our own community.
I have co-workers who are against tax funded public education period. They ask what is wrong with parents and neighborhoods banding together to educate the young. Most of the posts here advocating we charge these undocumented students higher tuition sound like they come from lower middle class families. That being the case how would you like it if there were no public education? Would your parents be qualified to provide you with an education if the state didn't? You would have no opportunity in that case to move up the ladder, those of you that choose to do so.
We all contribute in our own way and we all get from society. Thats the way it works. Society at large needs to ensure that all its citizens have opportunities to become useful and productive citizens. This is for the greater good of us all.

The kids they are talking about here are victims, brought here by parents who broke the law. The kids have done what they were asked to do.
These kids do not know how to live in Mexico or any other country, they were raised here and have prospered in school enough to get accepted into college on academic merit.
It appears the Republican lawmakers pushing this bill want to keep these kids in the shadows so that they can be the cheap labor they were intended to be when the current administration decided to stop enforcing immigration laws.
Where is the compassion for victims?
