Keep fighting MITT... | 1:32 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
go for a win. Where else can we go for leadership in the Party. Mc Cain can not unite us with his past record staring us in the face and with aliens pouring over the border of his home state at record rates. He seems to welcome it! I don't know if I could ever vote for "The Little General". He will also prolong this expensive and destructive war. We may be in for many long, dark, and troublesome days ahead and we need your brains and determination to help this country. We will pray for you. Thanks for your willingness to serve and sacrifice for us and your country. God Bless You.
Keith, California | 4:08 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Romney is, or was our only hope. As a conservative, I cannot vote for McCain, or any on the Democrat side. We will have to suffer through another "Carter" in order to get another Reagan--or something close. Unfortunately, with the demographics of this country, it may not happen. The Democrats have succeeded in making too many people dependent on government. I'm very afraid the good times in this country are over.

Good bye Multiple Choice Mitt! It is nice to see that one still cannot buy their way into the office of President, no matter how hard they try. Forbes and Perot couldn't do it and neither will Willard.

On the bright side, he should be able to get a job anywhere, as he supports everyone! He's pro-life, pro-choice, pro-family, pro-homosexual, pro-gun, pro-gun control, pro-government medicine, pro-small government, pro-torture, pro-war, pro-Gitmo, pro-faith, pro-family, ...

Willard's motto: "I agree with YOU!"

Hang in there, Mitt! | 5:24 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Talk among people here in Missouri is that if it came down to choosing between YOU and McCain, that they would vote for YOU hands down. You are right. Conservatives do NOT want Huckabee as our next President! The only reason more Democrats here did not swing over to vote for you is because they wanted their vote to count AGAINST Obama and didn't want the race to come down between Obama and anyone else. They say that in a fight between Hillary and YOU, they would swing over and vote for YOU, Mitt!!!!

The wheels aren't coming off Mitt's campaign, but the wind is definitely out of the sails. He has the money to get a couple of more puffs on the cotton sheets, but... in all due respect, it is over.

Huck has played spoiler, and he now thinks he can win. Oh, I don't think so. It is funny to watch him. He might get the vp slot though. McCain owes him big time.

I have never heard McCain called, "The Little General." Since he was in the Navy, this phrase makes no sense at all. Call him something to do with his branch of service, please. Otherwise, you are just tossing mud and that gets your hands muddy as well, doesn't it.

It looks like the sleazy tactics Romney used, against the other candidates, are coming back to haunt him. The Huckster is possibly staying in the race just to syphon off votes from Romney, to assure a McCain win.
Chuckles55 | 6:39 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
As a Democrat, it was great to have an historic opportunity to choose between either the first woman or the first black to be the next president of the U.S. McCain, Romney and Huckabee represent the same old political track of "follow the money" to see the real power behind the candidate. Sorry, Utah, but good old Mitt just lost the wind from his sails. The Republicans are truly fractured, while the Democrats are building an insurmountable head of steam.
Quite frankly . . . | 6:46 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
. . . I don't see why anyone would want either McCain or Romney. They're just a couple of sleezeball politicians, with nothing relaly to recommend either of them.

Mitt you out spent all our contenders like a drunken sailor trying to buy love and Mitt failed. Mitt is called a good businessman?

"The Little General" must be something Limbaugh said to his followers. Rush got a deferment to keep from being shot at knowing another would serve for him. So, Rush knows little of the military he didn't want to serve in.

The writing is on the wall. The american people are favoring the liberals. John McCain won all the states that typically vote for the democrate in the general election while Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney split the votes for the conservative voters. John McCain cannot beat either Obama or Clinton in the states that he won yesterday. Get ready for the next president democratic president.
I feel sick | 7:10 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
It makes me sick to watch our country vote for McCain. He changes with the wind(or poll) on every issue and he answers every question with some variation of the troop surge in Iraq working. I just don't see him as a good President.
HC | 7:14 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
I hope that after seeing the dirty deal that McCain and Huck put together to torpedo Romney's candidacy that Utahs will swing to the Democratic side. McCain is using Huck and the poor guy doesn't seem to have the brains to recognize this. He has scored in single digits in many states. I've thought for a while that he is really running for Veep and hopes to slide into the top spot like he did into the governor's chair in AR. A McCain/Huck ticket would be horrific- I wouldn't be surprised if the first thing the warmonger would do is to try to put the draft back in. This guy truly relishes being super-cop of the world! Check out Huck's resume and see if you think he is qualified in any way for the 2nd or top spot. The democrats are the better choice this time.

I think it is interesting how regional attitudes were so much at play yesterday. The South-Huckabee--the states where Romney lived, Minnesota,North Dakota and much of the Mountain West--Romney, and McCain's machine plowed through California, New York, etc. But with McCain it would be more Bush-type foreign policy.

I don't like the number that McCain played with Huckabee. Oily. Sneaky. And Huckabee's redneck populist ideas--attack the IRS--he sure doesn't understand the function of the IRS. Getting rid ot it wouldn't end tax! His tax proposals would make it HARDER for lower income families. The rich would buy overseas, and the poor, again, would pay for most of the taxes through consumer spending. How could such ignorance promote realistic leadership? McCain better not consider him as a Vice President.

Utah against willard | 7:35 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
We saw what the sheep in UT are all about, Willard won by 90%??? Even in his state of Mass. Willard didn't win by this big of a margin. When asked why utahns voted for Willard, the majority stated that they voted for him because of his similar "values" either thats code for religion, or Utahns love intrusive big brother government types who force health care upon the masses, or they like to fund abortion with tax dollars, or they like to take away the 2nd amendment rights of others. Oh wait, it must be religion...
How many of you who voted for willard even knew that his first name is willard?

that McCain and Huckabee are working like 2 little snakes to keep Romney from winning. They know they have to work together to beat him. Huckabee is only staying in the race to take votes from Romney, criminal! If it comes down to McCain, I'd rather see a Democrat (well, a proclaimed Democrat) in the White House, that would at least give Congress a fighting chance.

If this "thing" comes down to McCain and Hillary - that's not much of a choice. Depending on the VP candiate, there isn't a chance for an independent either. We've had a lousy President for the past 4 years and I don't hold out much hope for the future.

The real power lies with Congress. Will you continue to vote the same 'ole, same 'ole? I would hope we'd "vote the bum's out!" - if they're in, vote them out and I like Matheson, but it's truely time for a "change of guard."
3rd Party | 8:05 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
It really is time for a 3rd party. Conservatives no longer have a voice. The Democrats have moved so far left as to be solid socialists and will continue to the left to eventually embrace communism. (Don't believe me, look up the history of the term 'Progressive' with which Hillary describes herself). The Republicans slime themselves by falling all over the moderate liberals that the Dems left behind and the spineless undecided. Conservatives need to demand a voice and shun McCain and the liberal panderers. It is clearly time for a 3rd party to form that will hold solidly to our values, even if it means a socialist presidency. Sometimes the medicine tastes horrible but is necessary to fight the disease.
Earl | 8:07 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
It's the last thing I wanted to see, but the Republican Party is splintering into irreconcilable factions. George W. Bush is the least popular president in history, and all three of the major candidates are trying to distance themselves from him, while at the same time vowing to "stay the course" of Bush. None of them (with the exception of Ron Paul) has offered anything but minor adjustments of Bush's policies. The result? Democrats will win in November, but only because Republicans have nothing to offer but more of the same.
Re: Keith, California | 8:13 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Oh, yes, the "good times in this country": a pointless war in Iraq, ten of millions without health care, the impending housing crisis, and going from a surplus to a record deficit in eight years. If that's over, then WOO-HOO!!!

The GOP is messed up! | 8:36 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
The Republican party has taken such a left turn in the past few years that it has become hard to recognize. I am dumbfounded that McCain has gained so much popularity. He will say and do whatever it takes to get to the White House. You may recall that four years ago he considered jumping ship and joining John Kerry on the democratic presidential ticket. He does not represent what Republicans truly stand for. Conservatives are left without a voice this election (except for Ron Paul, but unfortunately no one is listening.)
Re: A little confused... | 8:34 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Guliani dropped out. Ron Paul is still in the race, though I can understand how you thought he dropped out if you get your news through the major media that has censored Ron Paul through omission.

see ya later!!! The truth of the matter is that our country has survived awful presidents in the past, and McCain or Clinton or Obama won't change where we're going or the speed. It was nice to hope. I wonder if they'll ever perform IQ tests as part of the exit polls...
I don't want to look. | 8:42 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
What a mess! This race has become something that is not at all about who would be the best leader for the country. Its turned into a bible bash on the school playground. Reminds me of "Tick-tock, the game is locked" or "I'll trade you my egg sandwich for your Evangelical Peanut Butter Cup." I can't believe how low the candidates have stooped to discredit their opponents, to misconstrue the truth, to heap laurels on their own heads they don't deserve. Reminds me of Jr. High when kids would do or say anything to become popular. Haven't we grown up yet? Truely. I'm ready to move to a deserted island with a 4 yr supply of food and necessities.

And to "A little confused..." Ron Paul has not dropped out of the race. I voted for him to show that there are people who support his vision of a limited federal government.

Native Utahns are losers who back losers. The fact that they obviously vote for their own in percentages that are so out of whack compared to the rest of the country, is what scares the country about mormons. They are programed to support themselves no matter what, regardless of what is best for the country. However, I think its great you keep marginalizing yourself. Considering the sterotypical, clean cut mormon Romney is your best shot, and he is failing by the numbers, perhaps native Utahns will come to realize that the country just doesn't buy your story or your motives.
Re: zuma | 8:50 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Since when does being a POW qualify you to be the president. I know a survivor of the Bataan Death March who was also held prisoner, tortured, and forced to do slave labor for 3 years. He is an amazing person with an incredibly inspiring story, as much for what he has become as for what he went through. But I wouldn't vote for him for President anymore than I would vote for McCain. Neither is qualified. And McCain does not espouse core Conservative values. Why would I vote for McCain?
Bruce Van Orden | 8:51 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
I was poll manager at Springville High School yesterday. Our voters had to wait from 1 to 2 1/2 hours in line in order to vote. There was only one reason for this surge in first time voters and voters for the first time in many years, including oodles of over 70 years old voters. The reason is that they wanted to vote for Mitt. They were giddy in their desire to vote for him. If he doesn't personally acknowledge this support and sacrifice for him in Utah County, he would be an ungrateful person.

It was humorous for me as a Democrat (who did not electioneer at the ballot place). Even as these "sheep" were going for Romney, he was being clobbered by McCain in most of the key states. Romney will not win the nomination as many of our voters hoped and prayed. Many arch Conservatives do not support McCain. I will be laughing all the way through the summer.
whiplash | 8:53 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
I'll stay with Romney to the end. He's the only candidate that can pull the United States out of the mudpit on half a dozen issues. Who cares what his faith is? The 89% win is not a Mormon statement, it's a conservative statement. Harry Reid would have received less than 5% of the vote. We want someone with values in the White House! Unfortunately, religion is the ultimate divider. He will never win the nomination because too many people are uneducated about the doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day saints. The far left (and far right) distort the facts and fabricate lies and the rest of the world just reads the commentary (magazines, HBO, liberal newspapers, etc) and don't look for truth and facts from the source (Bible, Book of Mormon, lds.org, general conference, etc).
jmdspk | 8:55 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
A third party would be nice, one that isn't in bed with the big lobbyist. Too bad all the parties that currently exist are nothing but extremist groups of the two existing parties.
Re: hogwash | 8:50 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Don't you think it is time to grow up and stop the name-calling and the mud-slinging? We get enough of that from our Presidential candidates. Guess I can see why someone like YOU wouldn't support an upstanding guy like Romney. Too bad you cut others down to make yourself feel better. What a sad world in which we live.
We reap what we sew! | 8:57 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Our fellow Americans have spoken! They would rather vote in a liberal Republican than a conservative.
I am totally disgusted with the whole process. McCain is slimy. Huckabee is a bigot plain and simple. I think he wanted to kiss up to McCain and stick it to the Mormon. Why else would most of the Bible belt vote in someone who couldn't win.
My only hope is that Obama pulls this one off. Having 4 to 8 more years of Clinton slime is almost more than I can stand!
Everyone on exit polling said their #1 issue is the economy. If it is, do you feel that a spendy socialistic Clinton is going to make it better? Our country is going to Hell in a handbasket.
I think I might be sitting this one out in November especially if it ends up being McCain vs. Hillary. Either candidate will ensure that there will be no America left by the time they are done. Hillary will spend tax dollars on Universal health care, and McCain will ensure we will all be speaking Spanish!
More lies about Romney | 8:51 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
"Maybe now he can start to understand the plight of those thousands of workers he laid off."

How about the many thousands of jobs he created and saved with his business acumen? Ever heard of Staples? It's success has a lot to do with Mitt Romney. There are countless other businesses he saved. Please stop spouting your liberal and cynical (that's a bit redundant though) spin.
Voting. | 9:03 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Voting for McCain because he's a former POW is like voting for Mitt because he's a Mormon. Neither has anything to do with the real issues we should look at before voting. I';m voting for the person who is closest to my views and beliefs of what this country needs. NOT because of one facet of their history.
McCain is Dirty | 8:58 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
John McCain has made every dirty deal he could make to try and get the Republican nomination. The dirty trick express was in full swing in West Virginia last night and I am sure it has a full list of stops all over the country.

The Republican Party is falling apart.
Texas Republican | 9:07 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
The only reason Romney is not the clear republican nominee is because Mike Huckabee believes that Mitt Romney belongs to the church of Satan. In reality, Mike Huckabee is only in the presidential race at this point in order to split the conservative vote and ensure that a Mormon does not hold America's highest office. I am surprised that the news media does not recognize this obvious fact, and I am disgusted at the blatant prejudice and hatred so many "Christians" harbor for their Mormon counterparts. I heard Huckabee's rhetoric this morning and he compared Romney to the slain Goliath, and his own financing to the widows mite against the gold of the Pharisees'. Both references place Romney in the archetypal role of one who fights against the lamb. "Not about religion" is a terrific platitude, but the clear reality is that for Huckabee religion the only thing it's all about.
Lionheart | 9:08 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
During Carter, I cancelled the newspaper and did not watch any television news. His disasterous policies made dark days indeed. Fortunately by good decisions and the Grace of God, my family prospered, but the country suffered mightily. I won't vote for any of the current likely candidates. Think I'll buy a place in Midway, no newspaper, no internet, no television, buy a horse and withdraw from the fray for the next 4 years while the inevitable happens. Foolish fiscal policies and the rats of the world running over us.
Anonymous | 9:09 a.m. Feb. 6, 2008
jmdspk,

I'm sorry to say that a third party without big money and powerful lobbyists would have a great name: The Losers.

What Utah and the rest of the country needs is clean elections legislation. We need independent voices from across the political spectrum to solve the problems that we face.

I think we all intrinsically know that. That is why so many Utah conservatives would rather vote for Obama than see Clinton or McCain get in. They would just be more of the same.
