Why not come to SUU and be part of something very special in rebuilding the program? While I'm disappointed, I wish this young man the best and hope things work out.

Good decision Stewart. Good luck on the mission, and good luck at BYU. You will fit in nicely there, and when you get your shot, you will impress. Go T-Wovles!
Good Luck | 3:22 p.m. Feb. 3, 2008
I'm a Timpview fan, but Timpanogos has a spread offense that should prepare this QB for their system. Best of luck to you. I watched the Timpanogos freshman play Timpview and they had a QB that could be the best frosh I've seen in years. Not sure who he is, but look out for that kid.

Because he will get no exposure at SUU. If he goes to BYU at least he has a chance to get a starting job and be seen more than he would at SUU.

Good things come to those that wait. I hope he has a good and safe mission and when he comes back to BYU I hope he's another Jim Mcmann or Steve Young. To those other schools who don't want to wait for him, I hope that you all will regret it.

It's nice to see a T-Wolf coming to BYU. Go Cougars! Go T-Wolves!
TOO BAD | 9:57 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
It's really sad to see a great young man with alot of talent to see D1 schools turn their heads as soon as they find out he is planning on going on an LDS mission. I don't understand why a 3 year starter did not get a scholarship at BYU. They gave out alot of scholarships this year and even made a offer to a QB in southern cal who turned it down. I guess it might be because this high school only finished 3rd in region don't know? What is the deal with HS QB in Utah, they don''t get respect!!!
Utah QB's | 10:02 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Isn't it funny that utah schools go out of state for their QB's If you had a utah QB with a cal QB and the utah QB had better stats these utah schools including BYU would go out of state. If Stuart was a QB in California he would have offers from D1 schools all over the country.

Are you CRAZY kid - go somewhere where they want you and want you bad enough to give you a scholarship. Graduating from college with no student loan debt is huge. If you are a true top 5 QB you will have no problem getting offers. However, if your dream is BYU and only BYU will do then take that RISK.
BYU Walk On | 10:04 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
It's great to get a walk on to BYU. However he will never play. BYU has several QB's with scholarships which means they have potential in BYU's eyes. And they will get all the attention and focus from BYU coaches. He should go play out of state.
Its a GAME | 10:18 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
If youre walking on with preferred status then your coaches have been talking with BYU and know you want to go to BYU bad. I have personally seen this happen time and time again with college sports. And yes folks BYU is no different than any other college out there. Its a game they play with the minds of talented young kids that more or less guarantees that the college eliminates any risk knowing that usually a kid wont play until his junior year and save 2 years of scholarship money on him and then if he fits into their system they give him a scholarship if not they have lost nothing. Advice to kid, go somewhere where they are willing to pay for your education while you take a chance on fitting into their system.
Louisiana Cougar | 10:42 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
"Its a game": With BYU costing less than a majority of D-I schools and being able to save money by being close to parents, BYU is more of a value than a scholarship could produce. Football is not an end all and the intangibles at BYU are worth more than "wasting" two years somewhere else.
Anonymous | 11:08 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
As a BYU alum, I obviously think BYU is the best choice, even without the scholarship. It's a great education, in a great environment, at a great price. What I don't understand is how the other teams will pass him up becuase he is going on a mission, but when BYU plays plays against those teams, they will complain about BYU's more "mature" players?
Dummie | 11:21 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
With the offers that he received, he couldn't have been that good of a recruit. Weber? SUU? Go ahead and walk on and stay away from the U, because we don't want that second tier talent. Why is this even a story? "A second rate football player passes up on stellar offers from SUU & Weber to walk on at BYU?" Wow...you'd think there would be more news to fill up the paper after the Super Bowl and with the Jazz playing well?
????????????? | 11:33 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
BYU fans are a joke. just like you are probably going to get a BCS bid huh?
Chester Blue | 11:43 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
I hope he gets a fair shot at BYU because he is a nice QB. He and teammates played with heart against the State Champion Hawks from ALta. Stewart throws a nice ball and has a pretty good arm. I think he can throw it 60+ through the air. Hey, what about their talented tailback Taylor Lyons? Where is he going to play in college? I think he could be a nice H-back or slot back for the Cougars as well. If the report is true(that he may run a 4.4 40,), then BYU would be nuts not to offer him because he can run and catch well and is a very good athlete. He's probably 5'10" and weighs 180 but he can flat out play. Where is he going?
discod | 11:54 a.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Only a few of the posters on this forum understand how difficult it is for LDS players to get scholarships if they are going on a mission. Many division I schools that would have offered a scholarship lose all interest after finding out the kid will serve a mission. While some top recruits are able to overcome this, many kids that are division I caliber are turned away. My hat is off to this kid for having the faith to serve a mission... it is a big sacrifice.
Hey Ute Fans... | 12:03 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
The BLUE owns you!

Complain and make all the snide remarks you want, but beat us first!

PS You'll be waiting for years!

Yahoooooooo...Go BLUE!!!!!
mission | 12:03 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
If this kid wasn't going on a mission he probably would have gotten offers from some top flight schools. Unfortunately, LDS kids that plan on serving a mission are seen as too much of a risk because their commitment contract isn't binding by the time they get back.

Awesome! You will never regret for joining a winning program. Best of luck to you.

Fiesta Bowl to National Championship???

Give me a break
LDS athletes | 1:16 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Church mission or scholarship? Don't blame the colleges. It's a choice the young men make.
rain on the parade | 1:19 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Nice comments by our little brothers, the yoot fans. All they can do now is try to rain on our parade because they don't have a parade for themselves. Oh wait I forgot last year they finished high in the MWC, tied for 3rd place. Maybe next year they'll get sole possession of 3rd place. Oh boy.

I think the way Bronco is giving walk-ons a chance and actually seeing some of them succeed and get starting positions is a great thing. Please keep the competition open like you've been doing and don't just give the spot to the guy that's been there longer if there's a new guy that's obviously better. It would have been nice to have seen WR Kevin Curtis, who is having a very good pro career, get a chance as a walk-on at BYU instead of ending up at USU. I seem to recall BYU was his first choice but I could be wrong on that. Hopefully we won't miss out on any other Kevin Curtis type players.
Alta QB | 1:26 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
I think the Alta QB will be playing for a JC in southern California for the very reasons mentioned. Rumor has it he will be the starter for Pasedena College this fall because schools like UCLA, Kansas Georgia Tech did not pursue him because of his desire to go on an LDS mission. Good luke to Stuart he is a great QB.
MIssions and D1 | 1:42 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
There are actually a number of schools that ARE interested in the RM's, ie., ASU, Stanford, Hawaii and CAL. They like the maturity of the LDS RM. All of these schools plan years ahead. You can bet that if they see a prospect that they like they'll grab them.
LDS athletes | 1:52 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
It's true you can't blame the colleges... look at Max Hall or Ben Olson, for example. ASU takes a chance on top recruit Max Hall, using one of their scholarships on a kid who serves a mission for two years... when Hall comes back he turns his back on ASU and plays for BYU. Then you have Ben Olson, same situation as Hall but Olson turns his back on BYU and is now playing at UCLA. With the musical chairs it is no wonder schools are using their scholarships on kids that they know will actually play for them.
cougarfb | 2:08 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
He reminds me of a QB from Roy, Utah by the name of Jim McMahon who was not very highly recruited.
You Say What???? | 2:31 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
I think it is great when the utah fans fan weigh in on a kid who decides to go to BYU. If this young man decides to go to utah instead of BYU or elswhere I suppose we'd hear about brillant he is for having the insight to pick "that" school just a bit further north or the elsewhere. But he chooses BYU and then we hear all the mouth from all the haters.

Whether you chumps like it or not, the college football world is soon to recognize the Cougars as one of the best if not the best of all. Then your 7-5 or 8-4 teams that typically come out of Salt Lake will be just fine, because it's not going to get any better than that.

It is the system that is attracting these young men to the BYU, not the hatred that idiots that post on this site or others to an average program that Utah has.

All I can say at this point is have a great mission Stuart and come home to Utah and BYU and crack some heads when you pick up a football again.

Magic happens utah boys...........GO COUGS!!!!!!!!!
What a waste | 2:37 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
this kid should go to Weber or SUU, he could actually get some experience as a starter or be a third stringer and use his redshirt on the scout team and gets ome reps there. He will also ge to go the school for free. Then if he wants to Transfer to a FBS school when he gets back at least he will have played some football since hs. He will just sit and watch at byu they already have a ton of QB's.

Im sure i dont know the whole story but it doesnt seem to be in the kid's best interest. Thats byu athletics for ya.
Dumbq | 2:42 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Why walk on at BYU when they are ALWAYS loaded at QB? He'll never see the field and he'll have to pay for tuition... DUMB!!!!
Stupid Utes | 2:49 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
K for all you Ute fans that are making fun of this good kid for picking BYU- you have no idea what your talking about. A preferred walk on means he must try out for the team but is almost definately guarenteed a scholarship within 1-2 years. So you say he is dumb for passing up SUU or Weber? Yeah right. He is going to a team that actually wins unlike that team up north
McMahon | 2:55 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
McMahon had a scholarship, Stuart does not. He isn't even close to McMahon.
He could too see playing time | 3:31 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Yeah, Max Hall is starting right now, but this guy will probably redshirt his freshman year, and then go on a mission. Max Hall will be gone by then and they will need a good QB after that. I think he has just as good of shot as anyone else.
Bluebaby | 3:47 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Actually Kevin Curtis could have walked on at BYU but chose to walk on at USU. Wow that decision really hurt him. By the way how Many BYU players where invited the NFL combines? That would be 1. Utah has 0 and USU has 2. One of these days good players will wake up and find out it isn't where you played but how. Quit wasting your careers waiting in line and get some playing time. While I love to see people choose the Y I can't help but wonder why not play where you are wanted. There is no NFL if you can't get on the field. Just ask Curtis.
Ernest T. Bass | 3:56 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
He should have gone to Weber, better coach (by far) and better situation. Unless he's a brown-noser he'll never play at byu.
havili USC | 4:20 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
havili is at USC now STARTING! and the only reason is because they needed a back NOW not in 2 years. thats why they wouldnt want to wait because they want them now haha is it really that hard to understand?
Anonymous | 4:56 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
this is for chester blue. taylor lyons also plays baseball and runs track. he will most likely go somewhere for baseball although he could definitly go to a D1 school for football. his brother alex lyons had the same choice and chose to play baseball in cali
RE: Dummie | 5:50 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Can you read! Utah did recruit him, and he would rather walk on at BYU. I guess Utah wants those second tier athletes bad, but just can't get them.
RE:Ernest T Bass | 6:10 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Weber State?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

Who... plays football for Weber State?
to ernie bass | 6:20 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
are you kidding me? A better coach at weber? Better at what- no discipline, gimmick-plays, always under-achieving expectations, etc? Wow- you're really hurting if you're not even going to play the urban card, but go way back to the mcbride era (that's taking your anti-BYU rhetoric to a whole new low).

It's not always about the football for every athlete out there- obviously there was much more that factored into his decision and once again the 'mighty' utes lost out to their big brothers down south. Go BYU!!!
OK But..... | 7:53 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
The Weber ST. Coach OWNED Lavell Edwards. He didn't own anybody else like he did Lavell.

Can you say 34-31!!!!!
Ernest T. Bass | 8:08 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
Yes, a better coach....no doubt about it.
I love it when byu gets a new qb recruit. In the "minds" (as if they have minds) of byu fans each and every qb will win the Heisman and is the most coveted qb in the nation.
Reality: he has a weak arm and is an average Big Sky recruit at best.
Weber State Coach Come ON | 10:58 p.m. Feb. 4, 2008
In what world are you possibly talking.

Definately not Div 1.

You are so anti BYU, you can't see around the clouds at Urban Meyers feet.
Benchwarmer | 2:53 p.m. Feb. 5, 2008
Yes this kid played well in high school and has set many utah passing records.. but so can a lineman if you put him in an offense that passes 95% of the time (Timpanogos's). He was a good quarterback for the offense his team ran.. but will most likely see the bench for the first 4 years at BYU. they are already loaded with QB's and my guess is this kid will end up on the scout team for a long while. Good high school career though
T'Wolf Friend | 10:00 p.m. Feb. 6, 2008
Stewart first of all congrats man! You were so much fun to watch this year and I hope that you continue on to greatness at BYU. It's a wonderful place. Just know there is no limit to what you can do, just work hard everyday and nobody can stop you except for yourself. Congrats and I love ya man! Go BYU!
COME BACK TO REALITY | 1:21 p.m. Feb. 9, 2008
in response to Ernest T. Bass Feb. 4th Reality: he has a weak arm and is an average Big Sky recruit at best.last summer at snow college christian stewart threw 70 yards in a contest with about 12 quarterbacks (invitation only) next closes was 61 yards. also during the alta game this year he threw 75 yards IN THE AIR ! WEAK ARM, maybe u need to spend a little more time "courting charlene" in mayberry rather than watching six million dollar man re-runs.REALITY IS: what an incredibly TALENTED young man that has the GUTS to go after his dream and has INTEGRITY TO BOOT! keep an eye on this guy, (probably will only have to use one eye) as he WILL be all over! so bottom line is: ONWARD CHRISTIAN

The QB that you saw on freshman is Damien Rivers
