Am I the only one that gets nervous when Lloyd is handling the ball? He seems out of control, and his assist to turnover is equal. I'd like to see Fredette or Martineau handle the point position.
I agree with Nervous--Lloyd freaks me out when he has the ball. I don't understand why Rose plays him as much as he does.
Personally I like that Coach Rose is giving Lloyd time on the floor. He doesn't look to shoot which opposing teams have figured out, but I think he gives us athleticism that none of the other guards have and IMO he is the best on the ball defender of the point guards, Murdock included.
Fredette can't play the point, he is a true shooting guard, nothing else. Lloyd does a decent job, not a lot of turnovers, brings a quicker pace to team too. He is an awesome defender as well. Murdock does not shoot well either, so I think it is a good point guard rotation. Lets just hope they don't blow one @ Wyoming
Another game on "The Mountain" that I won't be able to see......heavy sigh.
I think that Loyd is their best point guard and should play more than he does. When he's in the game we see real point guard type passes (the drive and dish variety) as opposed to just catching the ball at the top of the key and swinging it to the other side of the floor. Plus, as mentioned above, his defense rocks.
Lloyd is just a rookie trying to get comfortable at this level. Once that happens, his natural talent and quickness will be a great asset to BYU. He perhaps is a bit slow to gain confidence. That fact might not be lost on Rose, as he keeps getting him minutes.
Coach Rose has built a safe-guard for dealing with slump periods at the guard line.He now has a partial answer for a slumping Trent. I too feel Jimmer could play more point if Rose needed help at that position.I have always felt that Jimmer would be ready to contribute strong off the bench by Tourney time. Well, Rose was pushed into moving that time-line up by several weeks and that has payed great dividends for mid-season success. Now Collinsworth and Miles need to step up their offensive play ,along with their boarding contributions, to give answer for Trent's dry runs at times.Looks like the confidence level has returned for Tav. Driving to the hoop has helped him much. Go Cougs!!
Coach Rose has had a lot of criticism on these commentaries. (a la "sit Tavernari on the bench", "don't play Lloyd, he makes too many turnovers." "Plaisted can't hit free throws so Rose must be a terrible coach") I'm glad Rose is in charge cause he knows what he's doing. Lloyd has had a few problems, but I think his ball handling is getting better and his turnovers are down from the start of the season. Let's look at his positives. He's fast, a good defender and from what I've seen is a good shooter when given a chance. All he needs is experience, which Rose has chosen to give him. Saturday at Wyoming should be a great game. Both teams are playing well. Fearless prediction- BYU by 8.
I love Dave Rose's Cougars. They kick .............. How about Lee, JT, SAM, Ben, Jimmer, Collingsworth and Miles. And sometimes PlayDead is good too.
Don't get me wrong - I love Cummard. He is definitely our Kirelinko. But, like Loyd, his style of play makes me think a turnover is imminent. It's almost a loosy-goosy style of passing and dribbling. Maybe it's just perception due to style. But I'm glad both our Cougars. Now, just if Plaisted could make those free throws......
have you looked at cummard's stat line.... the guy has an incredible efficiency rating, low turnovers, and an incredible shooting percentage, what is out of control???
If Michael Lloyd Jr becomes anywhere near as good of a point guard as his father was, he'll really help the Cougars. He's definitly improving, but should look to score a little more. Perhaps he doesn't look to score since he never got the chance to shoot the ball in high school, too much P'Allen Stennet.
"Fredette can't play the point, he is a true shooting guard, nothing else."
He CAN'T play the point position? So what you're saying is that despite being a guard, Fredette is incapable of bringing up the ball. Well I disagree. The only reason Lloyd gets so much playing time is because he's practically the only guard BYU will have returning next year. Everyone else is going on a mission or is a senior this year. Coach Rose needs Lloyd to play now so that he gets some experience for next year. But trust me, it has nothing to do with Fredette's supposed inability to bring the ball up the court.
his whole life. This is his first year playing sg. Lloyd was a sg his whole life. This is his first year playing pg. Crazy Huh! As for Lloyd he is doing fine for a freshman. I don't get all the hype though. All he has done so far is give BYU pg Ben Murdock a rest once in a while. His on the ball D is better than Murdock but that isn't saying much. I think everyone is so high on him just because his potential is much greater than the current starters, but it is only potential for now.
Fredette on the other hand has out performed Burgess as of late, especially on the road. Jimmer is starting to feel more comfortable in the O as of late. It would be nice if he could get some more minutes. The only way I think he could consistantly get more is if he took 5-10 from murdock a game. I think Burgess is good and warrants 25 mpg. I dont think Murdock's play warrants the 30 mpg he gets.
It's funny to read some of these comments on these message boards. We have fans who think there college coaches but probably haven't played much more basketball then church ball and there making statements like Fredette is not a point guard he's a shooting guard and nothing else, or Lloyd Jr. is out of control and not good, and so on. All Rose has done is win 20 plus games since he's been a coach at BYU which is not the easiest place to win in basketball. He forgot more about basketball than 80% of the fan base yet I see coaching advice everywhere you turn around in these message boards. If you really knew anything about the game you'd know what these guys have brought to the team this year and just how good they are and can be. The little things that most of you don't know about the game actually play a big part in winning and losing. Just because someone comes off the bench and doesn't score a bunch of points, or rebounds doesn't mean there not productive. The team's winning with these guys giving valuable minutes, so I think he knows what he's doing.
Re:Funny, I believe your reference statement is: Coach Rose has fogotten more Basketball than most fans will ever learn,or know in their lifetime. That is probably a true statement, but remember, others not metioned in the remaider fan base have playing, coaching, and athletic background significant for some rational comments which may be worthy of placing in this Blog space.Go Cougs. PS. I do think our offerings need be positive and always supportive.
