The editors who wrote this must live in Salt Lake County and have had their property taxes only increased by about 10 or 20%. You will sing another tune when your property taxes increase by 60 to 80% one year and then 100 to 300% the next. You mean well but we people are in denial.
Local governments and "other taxing agencies" all 16 of them on my tax bill, increase taxes just because they can. Oh, and last time I checked we live in a constitutionally limited republic based upon democratic principles. Your opening statement reflects your dismal lack of understanding about our Country and its history and our true form of government.
Thanks for telling the public how property taxes really work. It is extremely important for citizens to understand how their tax dollars are spent.
As an elected municipal official, it is very difficult to continue to run a community when the legislature is constantly stepping in to mandate new rules. Many of those mandates cause tax increases, but they can stay distant by pushing it down to local leaders to implement. The Utah State Legislature is constantly lamenting about the U.S. Congress meddling in their business.... then they jump in with both feet to meddle in the local governments' business.
If people don't understand what their tax dollar buys, they should be taking their local government leaders to task. When the State Legislature meddles, the people need to know that the increase is not necessarily the City that is out of balance.
