Acknowledging partial disagreement with the evangelical concept of Christ does not mean Romney accepts efforts of evangelical fanatics to function as religious bouncers and kick everyone they want out of the Christianity club.
Romney understands these points of difference dont make Mormons less Christian, but more Christian.
He wont say this, of course, because in our democratic system leaders are supposed to serve the interests and protect the religious freedom of all citizens, and challenging the religious beliefs of any particular group is not a good way to do that.
Hes running for commander-in-chief, not pastor-in-chief. Its a concept Romney lives by that Huckabee gives lip service to when hes not practicing religious identity politics.
What is a Christian ? Isn't it someone who believes and follows the teaching of the Savior? Doesn't the name Church of Jesus Christ imply Christian? Common folks, get real. No Church of John the Baptist is going to interpret or define who is Christian for me.
Excellent article. Refreshingly uncommon from the Associated Press. It is good to see this discussed openly. It's about the definition of 'Christian.' I personally try to follow the prophets as in the usage of the name in Acts 26:28.
The most important part of the article, to me is: "Tony Perkins, president of the Family Research Council in Washington ... linked to Dobson's ministry, calls Romney's positions "solidly conservative across the board."
Thanks for publishing this.
Just like President Kennedy, we are not electing a Mormon, we are electing a President. Make a good choice based on qualifications.
It is some what understandable how the early mormons were caught up in the mormon magic. Those where years in American history when the nation was under going many strange gyrations of growth pains, and communications and enlightment was some what limited. A little like the dark ages of Europe. But, today's world is different, and it is almost incomprehensible how the mormon church continues to lead their people down a dark path of falsified history and superstitions. To me the mormon people are kind neighbors who have a strong community of good culture and social values. Why do they have to cloak all this in mystery, magic and nonsense. They teach Jesus is open light and truth and recognizable to the human mind and heart. It seems they would be happier and the world would benefit if they were to practice the teaching. They can continue their church life of the love of Jesus and neighbors, but leave out all the indefensable cult, lies and superstitions.
That is the strangest interpretation that could be made from that statement. To get that Romney said he wasn't Christian from that is a little whackado-ish. That isn't even twisting words - that's just making up your own statement and saying he said it. It's no wonder Romney's camp didn't respond - they couldn't figure out where he was getting it.
The problem is that the definition for "Christian" keeps changing. Sometimes, it's used to encompass ALL religious points of view who profess a belief in Jesus Christ (the TRUE definition), other times, it's used as if it's a single set of specific evangelical beliefs. If someone says, "I'm a Christian, then could mean, 'I believe in Christ', but more often than not, they mean, 'I'm evangelical'."
I believe it was the Chesire Cat in Alice in Wonderland who said he wished to own all words. When Alice asked him, "Why?" He replied, "Because then I could define them any way I wish." That's what has happened with the word, "Christian". So, are Mormons Christian in that they believe the Jesus Christ is the Savior of the world - ABSOLUTELY! But, are we part of the evangelical christian faith? Nope. So, it depends on who you are talking to at the moment and how they are defining the word. For Mitt Romney, it's more often than not meant as a trap...
Evangelicals=BCS
Romney=MWC
National Election= National Championship Bowl Game,
It's their game and their rules, and if you want to get in, you play by their rules. Then MAGIC HAPPENS.
I find it ironic that LDS get the panties in a bunch when polugamists are called Mormons but get mad when Evangelicals get their panties in a bunch over mormons being called Christians. its all a word game.
I've thought about this long and hard and have decided to let it drop. Before the Savior was born, the Pharisees and the Sadducess and the Essenes were all busy telling the people what they should and shouldn't do, who was right and wrong, and that they were the "true" followers of the teachings of God through Moses. But isn't it interesting that when the Savior came, he REJECTED them all as corrupt and apostates from the truth. Even though they were founded in truth, they had long lost the true meanings of it.
And so, I understand better when the Baptists and other so called "Christian Mainstream" religions feel they need to knock down others who profess a belief in Jesus Christ as their Savior but that their teaching differ slightly in some way. Either way, in the end, it won't matter. Only those truly seeking to live the higher laws that the Savior taught us to Love God and Love his neighbor (yes, even including us "heretical Mormons") will be accepted by him.
I find Romney's explanation that many faiths have different teachings about Jesus, interesting.
I find "WakeWashington" comment that believing in different points of who Jesus is makes Mormons EVEN MORE Christian, quite funny.
I person is either Christian or not Christian but cannot be more Christian than someone of another faith.
What is a Christian? Jesus said it in John 17:3, "To know the true God and Jesus whom He sent."
For example: If my understanding of Mitt Romney is that he was a Chinese imagrant that had a Chinese mother and a African father and the only offspring of his parents and has never been married, then I would be describing a different Mitt Romney than the Mitt Romney that is running for president.
For Mitt Romney to say that there are different understandings of who Jesus is and what He taught is saying that there are different Jesus' that people believe in through different faiths.
His inference derived from Mr. Romney's own words are about as clear, coherent, and logical as the Athanasian Creed. Wow! Just, Wow! Talk about delusional.
I'd love to hear him explain how people that are born in America are not Americans. Even better, tell us how puppies don't grow up to be dogs.
Ohhhhh, the humanity!
Are any of the other man made religions out there besides the Catholics, Christian? All religions are break-offs from one church or another, and as well from the first Christian( CATHOLIC) church. So who is really Christian? Certainly not any modern religion if you put it this way. Who cares if Mitt Romney is Christian or not as long as he is a good president. Certainly we don't want a bellowing woman in the white house with her husband running our country. That would be absurd and scary.
Now we here in the news that Obama is related to Pres.,Bush through genealogy...lol! What next?
To I'm a Christian:
That is one of the most rational responses I've ever seen posted on this topic. You're absolutely right about the way one lives his life as being critical. Christian, Mormon, or any other faith, will have no place with Christ, unless they actually follow Christ's teachings during this life. The fact that one is called "Christian" or not, has no bearing in the final outcome.
I am seriously in awe that people cannot comprehend that members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, who strive to follow the teachings of Christ, are Christians. It really shouldn't be that difficult to understand. Yes, we are different than many of the mainstream Christians, but that doesn't make us non-Christians.
A radical interpretation at best.
Next!
Since when did Mitt Romney assume the mantel of "Church Spokesman", and why are so many Mormons offended when a Republican votes for a more conservative candidate?
Well I never!
Romney may want to let it slide but I think it is important to clarify that Mormons certainly are Christian.
The different doctrines about Christ dont change that or the fact that "Christian" denominations try to follow his teachings. Does one difference like baptism of children make you a non Christian.
Also, we understand what we will be judged on in the end but people still want to be portrayed properly in the media.
I always say, "It is alright to disagree but it is not alright to misrepresent".
This determination by self-proclaimed Christians to define who else is Christian is plain old bigotry. It reminds me of the old south where they used such terms as mulatto and octoroon and more, just to prove they were whiter than some one else. They are showing their faith by their bigoted works.
