McCain won it the hard way: forgiving the people for not voting for him in the past, and moving calmly over the prejudices against him today. Huck almost pulled it off, but Fred popped his celebratory balloons. Without Fred, Huck wins. I hope those two are never left alone in the same room. Fred hurts this morning, but he does have some satisfaction. I suspect he will drop out soon.
Huck is in it for the long run. There are lots of people out there whom he can appeal to.
But McCain has "mo" on his side now and look for him to run hard for the next few days. Look for McCain to crank it up. Up high!
Guiliani? I heard his 9-11 speech the other day, good grief. He is caught in a time warp.
How about Mitt, the glove man? Well, when he ran away from SC he ran away from the nomination. He might do ok in FL, but he has lost the deep south for ever. And that means no vp for him.
McCain chooses...? Probably Pawenty of MN. Blue state could go red. Balances AZ with MN.

You read it here first.

Go McCain. At least you stand for something, unlike the favorite phonylitician this paper spews on about day after day. McCain 08!
McCain is a LIBERAL | 10:11 a.m. Jan. 20, 2008
John McCain is a liberal masquerading as a Republican. McCain/Feingold. McCain/Kennedy. Amnesty for All. Campain Finance Reform. He is wrong on all of these. He was and is wrong on all of these. He's a politician that NOW says Amnesty was wrong but only because the voters started to turn away from him. Once the election is over...guess what...he'll do it. He is part of the problem in Congress. He will lose to either Clinton or Obama. Mark my words people. John McCain is no friend to Conservatives or Republicans!

Looks like most of the people, including the writer, McCain't spell right or use good grammer. 'Nothin' is more annoying than poor writing and made up words! If poor McCain only knew this was the representation he was getting.
Go McCain | 1:20 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
While it'd be great to see Romney do well so Mormons get more respect, McCain is by far the best candidate for pres in my mind. And he's center-right. He's only a liberal if you've allowed yourself to go so far right you've forgotten what a conservative used to be.
The bottem line | 2:07 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
McCain won because the conservative vote split between Thompson and Huckabee.

Romney won Nevada because it's the same liberal state that represents Harry Reid.

It's time for Thompson to concede this race to Huckabee.

Liberals win when conservatives do nothing. Romney and McCain are examples of such liberalism.

I have asked this before, "What is a liberal?" Is it the person who voted in Congress for the super highway system, so you can drive more easily between Logan and Spanish Fork and beyond? Is it the person who funded research into curing diseases at the National Institute of Health? Or, maybe a liberal is that person who believes that newspapers are free to print what ever they want as long as it is not libel or slanderous or causes riots? Who is the liberal? The person who wants our food checked before we eat it? Perhaps the liberal is the one who spends money for repairing our soldiers and sailors and marines and merchant marines and airmen and women after battles and wars? You know, the VA budget. Liberal?

I hear a lot of moaning and groaning about "liberals" but I have yet to meet one. I have met concerned, caring citizens however.

And when one defines "liberal" tell me what is wrong about being one. Was JFK a liberal? He supported fed. aid to education to level the playing field. How about our present president with his interference in public ed.? Is he a liberal? Explain please.

To "McCain is a LIBERAL" | 3:38 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
You are 100% correct on that one, man. McCain is a wolf in sheep's clothing.
McCain is the man | 4:23 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
I am an LDS who votes for the person NOT the party. McCain is the best candidate right now that can be the PRESIDENT of the US from day ONE.
Those republicans who just care about their party more than their country (see McCain is a liberal) can not forgive McCain for doing what is right for the country NOT his party. The country is in the situation it is right now because the past Republican terms. McCain is a man who stands by his principles NOT by his party interests. See what Bush has done so far for doing what is more important for his party?
McCain all the way! Go McCain!
AZ with McCain | 4:30 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
It's really sad when republicans can not forgive McCain for supporting an immigration reform. It's bad just to think that for them one issue is more important than other more important issues like terrorism, the economy, etc. That tells you how many republicans are anti-immigration because of hate, if they hate McCain even a member of its own party, it's hard for them to deny that fact....they are the wolves NOT McCain.
Lot's of well know politicos in Arizona are supporting McCain because the person he is, except of course Mr. Russell Pearce.
McCain and immigration | 5:36 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
Just because we do not agree with Amnesty does not mean that we have hatred toward illegal immigrants. They simply need to get into the country legally. My husband is a teacher and has a couple of P.E. classes with 70+ students and they only have half of a gym to teach in. Why? Well, probably half of their school is illegal immigrants whos parents do not pay into the tax system, therefore all of our kids suffer for it, including the immigrants. They do not get the quality of education that every child deserves. We need a new system that can help people get into the country legally and those that are already here need to go through the legal system, not simply be given a free ticket for breaking the law in the first place. I don't know that any of the presidential contenders can fix the problem, but I do know that McCain will only make the problem worse.
Please folks... | 5:39 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
I can forgive McCain all day. That doesn't mean I have to agree with a man who opposes tax cuts (which stimulated the economy and brought record revenue to the US govt) but supports limiting my political speech with the McCain-Feingold Act. Now, my opportunities to contribute are limited while the George Soros' billionaires of the world run groups like Moveon.org that impact our future. Thanks McCain--that's why you're not getting my vote.

Previous posters have addressed McCain's devotion to his principles. From my vantage point, one of those principles is to say whatever the media wants to hear so that they can speak of how enlightened he is.

McCain has suddenly changed his tune on immigration and taxes, knowing he cannot get the GOP nomination on his previous (and I suspect, still held) beliefs on these issues.

McCain is RINO. You can't out liberal a Clinton, so if he is nominated as the GOP candidate, get ready for another 4 years of Billary.

Let me try a definition or two of the word, "Conservative." One who conserves. One who tries to get the greatest good for the greatest number with the least effort or dollars of the longest period of time. What is a "conservative"? Where I live they certainly consider McCain to be a conservative, but this forum has writers who are 100% sure that McCain is a... oh dare I say the word, "liberal."
I suppose he is, like Jefferson or Paine. A maverick. Believers in freedom of speech, etc. I do not plan on voting for McCain, but "liberal" is not what my part of the nation calls him. wow...

Heard tonight that Huck's attack dog, the movie star Chuck Norris, has said that McCain is too old to be president (McCain is 71). A trial balloon to see who salutes it. Yes, get the bucket of mud!!

It is good to see the Huck return to good old fashioned, name calling, third person, blind attacks by allies. Restores my faith in the GOP. For a moment there I thought they had forgotten how to win elections. I can sleep well tonight. The stars are back in the heavens.
what's wrong with Billary? | 10:08 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
Another 4 years of Billary?
What's wrong with Billary?
during Clinton's terms, the economy was strong, No war, very good foreing policies. Bill made a mistake like any human and that is the reason the rest of his 2 terms were wrong?
give me a break! To my knowledge bill lies didn't kill anybody. I can NOT say the same for Bush! who is more inmoral? If you are going to talk about presidents being morally clean NOT even George Washington will escape
To McCain and Immigration | 10:12 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
I don't remember going to the stores and asking me if I was an Illegal, so I don't have to pay taxes or when I apply to rent my department. I always tough that everybody pay taxes on what we buy or rent.
I'll think that MOST of the business hire people Illegal or Legal and they pay withheld taxes too.
I am confused, please clarify that immigrants do not pay into the tax system. Probably what you meant is that they don't collect the social security taxes.
Pay attension | 10:41 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
Please Folks; is right on.He makes a lot of sense.McCain Changes his mind every time he speaks and then calls it straight talk.Saying he is the only one that tells the truth. The people that claim he is so great havent listened to him very long.Just listen for a few days and you will see what I mean.

This may be the dumbest headline you've ever published.
From Japan | 11:28 p.m. Jan. 20, 2008
Living in Japan, I am somewhat isolated from some of the issues so I have a sincere question for "McCain and Immigration." You said that we should get the illegal immigrants citizenship so they can pay into the tax system. I would think that an employer hiring illegals, is doing so to avoid that, so what would keep that employer from firing the immigrant when he became legal, in favor of an illegal that costs less? Then wouldn't we end up having a legal immigrant on welfare, and another illegal in the system?
