What a silly argument! You're missing the point entirely. Illegal immigrants shouldn't BE here, much less drive here! By giving them driving privilege cards in makes them feel as if they have "permission" to be here, which they don't.

Richard

Any and all "perks" rewarding anyone in this country illegally should be discontinued yesterday! Why is it that you don't understand the word "illegal"? A nation without borders is no nation at all. Let's stop fooling around and stop the practice of pandering to those individuals who are breaking our laws. Just as institutionalizing the welfare state creates more welfare so does pandering to the illegal aliens give them more incentive to breaking the laws of this country and gives more incentive for others to do the same thereby compounding the problem of being overrun by a force that will change this country in a way that we don't want, or that you apparently don't anticipate. Or do you?

These immigrants are here like it or not, and if I or any member of my family is hit by a car driven by them, I want them to have auto insurance. I don't want my or my families future sacrificed on the alter of "lets get rid of illegal immigrants".

jr

they don't keep up the insurance once they have proved they have it. If one of the illegals hit me and has no insurance I will sue the State for allowing them to drive and for supporting illegal activity. The rest of us have to live by the laws of the land, why should they not? Then again I have to remind myself they are the new SLAVE for greedy self serving employers -

We all break the law, who doesn't speed? You people need to get a life. Go to the movies with your wife, spend time with your family. You'l live longer not always obsessing about others and your own life will improve.

If you want them here buy "uninsured motorist" insurance. Every policy has this. If you don't want them here write/phone/email/fax your Legislator and support the new bills in the current session that will restrict Illegal Immigration. PLEASE DO THAT! Writing comments to people who support lawbreakers doesn't accomplish anything.

Here's an idea--if the State doesn't want the cards used for age verification, DON'T PUT THE PERSON'S BIRTHDATE ON THE CARD! As long as it is a state-issued card with a person's picture and DOB, people will use it for proof of age. Duh! And don't kid yourselves--preventing young (but 21+) illegals from obtaining access to alcohol is a PRIMARY consideration in this debate for many people.

But the whole debate misses the point--if someone cannot prove their identity and age, we shouldn't be letting them drive. If they can, great, but the same proof that is sufficient to allow them to drive should also be sufficient for just about every purpose that ID is required for. It should certainly be sufficient to get a guy a beer! Ole!

What If I am walking on the street and they hit me, does my un-insured motorist insurance cover this? Also why should I have to pay more for this insurance just because people like you can't get a life and obsess about this particular type of law breaking. Get a life.

hit twice

I've been hit twice by illegal immigrants (presumably, because they couldn't speak English, even haltingly). Neither had insurance. One lied, provided false contact information, and a bogus proof of insurance card.

We can't trust people who come here illegally to act in the best interests of the citizens of this country. Furthermore, these folks bring a different standard here to the U.S. I used to live across the street from a "cultural" center, where I witnessed on several occasions, Mexicans leaving their trucks and discarding empty beer bottles as they did so.

Further, I have driven through over a dozen Mexican states, and there is definitely a different idea of safety there.

There's nothing racist about revoking driving cards. It's just prudent public policy.

hit twice? why not thrice?

If they are that prone to hitting people (you've been hit twice)? Then we absolutely should not revoke these driving cards, we need them to be insured. Your point would have been better make if you would have said three or four times, (would have made a bigger impact).

jackhp

Do tell, "hit twice," how is revoking driving cards going to change anything you just complained about?

hey jackhp

obviously what the law is intended to do failed "hit twice", and it is facilitating other illegal behavior (being used as ID) so it's a bad law that needs to be revoked.

The "Driver's Privilge card" is nothing more than a get out of jail free card, and is useless as identification since it is probably based on some other form of fraudulent ID, or Mexican Matricula Card. In case of an accident it prevents the police from taking them to jail, and so all they have to do is leave the area and change their name again. So, like many citizens they don't spend their money for insurance, because it is cheaper to take a chance.

Worst of all however, is that it is an enabler that helps illegal aliens remain in Utah illegally, and one of the reasons that Utah is a sanctuary state.

Where is the evidence these cards don't help, that they leave the sceen of an accident? I have never read of such stories in the news, and if it happens, it happens with people who are here legally here too, (I have read about that in the news). I for one want them insured, my family is at risk and my family comes first.

still won't post it

The D-new has twice refused my posts. I guess I shouldn't accuse the editor of benefitting from illegal labor.

Why should the State officially sanction the presence of illegal aliens by offering them a privilege card? As I recall, several banks announced they would accept this card as valid Id for illegals opening accounts.

I would also like the State to conduct a full survey of how many of these card holders have actually maintained auto insurance for the full year that these cards are valid for. Based on the number of people I know who have been involved in vehicle accidents with non-English speakers, none of the language-challenged drivers have ever had insurance. It would seem that many are temporarily getting insurance to show something to the DMV and then canceling it.

At least the illegals are not registering to vote and voting like they did before the privilege card came along. I think the DMV should turn their entire database of privilege card holders over to ICE and let them hand-deliver renewal notices.

You're right!

We shouldn't repeal the law. What we should do is actually enforce our immigration laws. That would make the "driver privilege card" law moot.

Citizen

Hmmm, I guess if the state sanctioning this or that were all that mattered in life you would be right, but as with most things there is usually more than one side. If you are willing to put your family or others at risk, of an un-insured accident so be it, I am not.

The reality is that workers come here without going through proper channels.

That is reality. No law will change it. No amount of hate, intolerance or vitriol will either.

(Never mind that economic freedom and opportunity also brought MANY of our families here!!)

One market-based approach to the issue is to raise the minimum wage high enough and ensure universal health care so that Americans are willing to take the available hot-roofing and hotel jobs, thus eliminating the demand for undocumented workers.
