If one were to read this article and compare it to today's Salt Lake
Tribune article written by the Associated Press, it would be like reading about
a Mitt Romney campaign in two different states. But the strange thing is is
that both articles refer to the Nevada state caucus with the Deseret implying
that Mitt Romney has a good chance of winning in Nevada while the Tribune
implying that it would somewhat of a surprise win for Romney considering how
little he has devoted to campaigning in Nevada compared to Rep. Ron Paul.
Strange.

My father-in-law is a southern Baptist and immigration is a very important issue
to him. He is very anti-amnesty as is Romney. If your here illegally, get out
and get to the back of the line. However, he is quick to say that he won't
vote for Romney not because he is Mormon, but because he likes Huckabee. Go
figure.

Mitt Romney seems to know that delegate count is what matters in his nomination.
He is way in the lead with 32 so far. If Huckabee wins South Carolina Romney
will still have the most delegates. Huckabee's current 13 would increase
to about 22 total. Romney's total would increase to maybe 36. It's
all in the numbers, and Mitt Romney has proven his supurb ability winning with
the numbers.

The Deseret News is the only paper in the nation to refer to Romney's
single primary victory as a "winning streak." Come on folks, he still
has to pick up over 1,100 delegates to get the nomination.

In years past whoever won 2 out of 3 Iowa New Hampshire South Carolina won the
nomination. This is not a typical year. Momentum has not been as crucial. I
think if Romney and McCain win Nevada and SC, respectively, then which ever one
of them wins Florida probably would win the nomination. However, if Rudy wins
Florida, then this race is just starting

Prejudice is alive and doing well. (See book Strengthened By The Storm for
burned churches and attempted mob murder in NC) The Evans are not just for
Huckabee but against the Mormons. They tremble and grubble when their
leadership assures them �the Mormons are coming, the
Mormons are coming� and the country will be run by Salt
Lake City. Ignorance is alive and well in parts of the South and prejudice is
not just for the blacks.

Forget SC. NV has more delegates anyway. Funny how some of these forgotten
states carry more delegates for the winner than do the big focused-on states.

I'll parrot what a number of you have already said. Why mess with SC when
NV provides more delegates anyway? The rest of the candidates are idiots for
spending hundreds of dollars for twinkies while Mitt's buying steak for

I agree Michigan has way more delegates than Iowa and more than New hampshire.
But michigan got half the media coverage than did the other two. Wyoming was a
given but its votes in the end, and NV is a better win than SC. But Mitt has got
to at least win one in the south maybe Florida.

Many of us gave Huckabee the benift of looking at him. But when he started to
say and do crazy hair things... we moved away from the windows, took our cash
and went to the other guy - Mitt. Now, he's not the most perfect
candidate, but pretty close to it. Huck is a stealth bigot and a crazy guy who
can't keep his stories straight. He is really stressing the TV preachers
creedo of 'do as I say, not as I do'.

It should come as no surprise to anyone that Mitt is leading among true
Republican voters, the educated voter, and those who actually have jobs that can
support a family. It probably is best that Mitt underscores SC because of the
sheer ignorance of the typical voter in that state along with their total
bigotry. Mitt is obviously the strongest candidate we have. He is by far the
most intelligent and competent. He is right on all his positions. He also exudes
leadership. The Dumbocrats ought to fear him. All they have are leaderless
incompetents or political hacks. Read Ann Coulter's article. She spells it
out well.

I wish people would see the "statistic" of "who ever wins New
Hampshire, Iowa, and SC wins the nation. This is a much quoted icon. The problem
is that politicians have tried to change the landscape of these marker states
and in so doing, have changed the the importance of these primaries. frankly you
can't get a feel for the national races by trying to buy the votes to get
the statistic right. After this is all over some statistician will look at
these states and likely remark well it didn't happen this time but it still
happens more time than not. So I say to you all primaries are to pick not only
who we like but also who can win. The only poll that counts is the election.
With the super Tuesday coming up I think it has made these early primaries with
little or no delegates almost irrelevant. We will know by the end of February
who is going to be the nominee. With that in mind vote for the man or woman that
you think will uphold the needs of the country. GO Mit

Well we are the state with legal prostitutes and open bets on everything that
moves but with economic woes and a governement that would bankrupt the planet,
Mitt Romney shows the energy and commitment to make our nation stronger and
safer.
We can't fight everyone's wars the old way and stay afloat. We can't allow criminals from other nations into our communities and stay afloat!
Mitt's religion may not be completely clear, but to anyone who wants to learn it there are ample opportunities with all those Elders going house to house, town to town also the internet.
It seems Mitt's religious upbringing and good choice in wife deserves credit for a solid family of well educated, productive, service minded adult children in strong marriages. Mitt has excellent personal and leadership qualities! I will vote Romney.

I am hoping South Carolina evangelicals will do as evangelicals did in Michigan

NV is a better play than SC. mitt could waste millions in a state that would
never in a million years vote for a mormon. the media can downplay that little
nugget all they want but lets face it SC will never vote for a mormon, period.
for now mitt is the man but het we shall see. time will tell. a brokered
convention could be the best thing that could happen in this year of wide open
races. a brokered convention for the first time could offset the big coast
states from giving us someone who can not win. the downside is when the chips
are down will anyone support mitt the mormon? time will tell. personally in a
brokered situation it will come down to two things media darlings (never forget
the media hates all republicans) and religion.

Huckabee went beyond the roundhouse kick in showing his aptitude for the
delicate diplomacy being president requires. He went pheasant hunting in Iowa
the week of the caucus. Of course a gaggle of reporters were in tow. He made a
joke about how the one he missed was wearing a Huckabee pin, so he let it go.
The assembled reporters chuckled. There is nothing weird about that. He
didn't stop there though. He made numerous comments about how this
pheasant he shot was one of his competitors and while patting his shotgun he
made comments about how he would like to handle attack ads. By the end it was
very weird.
Maybe we will have a Huckabee/Hillary duel a la Alexander Hamilton and Aaron Burr.
PS - Now I don't like Romney or Huckabee.

Mitt is the man with real vision for America's future. The rest of the
candidates seem to be glory seekers with nothing in mind but to further their
own selfish interests. It was apparent with Mitt's promises to the state
of Michigan that he plans to do the right thing for everyone who wants a strong
America. Mitt will most assuredly get my vote and I was so thrilled to hear the
very special women who called in to the Rush Limbaugh show expressing their
optimism about the caliber of man Mitt Romney is and how well he represents the
honest to goodness Americans.

Not everyone is in love with Mitt, however other than his religion they really
have no other things to throw at him. Given the Democrats are really worried
about someone with the basic christian principles, fidelty, belief in God, and

Your comparison between how the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune refer to
the Nevada State Caucus should not seem so strange considering how far the
Tribune has moved to the left. I once subscribed to the Tribune hoping that
between the Tribune and the Deseret News I could get a fairly balanced world
view. No such luck. There is nothing, I repeat nothing, fair and balanced
about Tribune journalism. A Tribune representative calls me with some
regularity offering me several weeks of free Tribune delivery. I tell the
caller thanks, but no thanks. I wouldn't have the Tribune in my
home--neither to read nor for bathroom usage.

With some people talking recession is either upon us or looming on the horizon,
I for one would like to back someone whose record shows that he can handle money
the way it should be handled, forsee problems and systematically goes about
solving them. He has also shown that he can raise a good family and has some
very definite ideas about the destiny of this great land of American that we all
enjoy and can enjoy it even more when things get straightened around in
Washington. Mitt Romney has proven that he can take the bull by the horns and
the bear by the tail and we'll all end up better off for his having done

strong and financially sound America. Plus, I've been driving around too
many lost souls - err... democrats to their rallies to see the latest crop of

Some musings. How can Mitt, if nominated, get elected President when he has
written off the south? Demos will point out how he blew off SC for Nevada. They
will hammer hammer hammer that point. Bad move for the long run. If nominated
he will have to pick a vp candidate who can carry the south, that is the
Republican strategy since... Reagan? So we choose Thompson? Too weak. Huck?
Too off the wall, bad Karma too. Guiliani? Nah, very bad Karma again. And
Mitt and Guiliani do not see eye to eye, so to speak. Mitt had to go into the
south and preach his populism and take his lumps. But he ran away to Nevada.
Demos have Obama and Edwards. The south might change a lot this election. Oh
golly! I smell a rout.
And, no one is talking about Texas. Texas will be in play this year. Bush cannot control Texas any more. whoa nellie.

Someone pointed out something interesting to me; Salt Lake City hasn't
voted a LDS mayor for a while, but Las Vegas' (Clark) county commissioner
is LDS. It is interesting to see how often Las Vegas is misjudged. I think
Mitt can win here.

details. Mitt is the detail king and that is what makes him so good and will
make him a great president. The other candidates are missing the point in this
election. Mitt picking up Wyoming, Nevada, Utah, Idaho and others states

The headline for this story cracked me up: "Southern Doubt Has Mitt Mining
for Nevada Gold". At first I had to do a double take, because it looked
like the same old Mitt-bashing headlines I see in the liberal mainstream media.
But then, when I read the story I figured out that it was not Mitt bashing, just
a HIGHLY UNFORTUNATE way to word a headline. Please be more careful Deseret
Morning News editors! I hate for my beloved newspaper to even APPEAR like the
liberal rags.

I find it interesting that Mitt has done this well, however having spent 12
years in the south, to include 4 different States. I do not believe Mitt could
win against a Democrat in any southern State. Comservatives (Evangelicals), I
beleive would obstain from voting before choosing a Mormon for President. The
South is the most conservative collectively, and any viable canidate would need
that vote to offset the North East and "Left" coast voters. I
personally will vote for Mitt and send him support, because even a losing
battle, when it is right, is worth fighting in.

Mitt Romney has decreased his effort in SC for a very good reason. He is
allowing Thompson, Huckabee, and McCain to fight and destroy each other. As they
attack each other and Mitt stays out of the fray many SC voters might just
reconsider their vote for these negative people. Mitt put out a few ads that
contrasted his positions on the issues with his opponents. The Old Media all
said this was "negative" even though Mitt's ad said nothing
personally derogative about them. When he backed off these comparative ads and
showed only his positive aspects, he won by 10 points in Michigan. SC
conservatives have much in common with Michigan conservatives. The polls could
be far off because many people only use cell phones and can't be contacted
by pollsters. The SC people who are Republicans are positive people and will
react favorably to a positive campaign. I predict a win or a close second for
Mitt in SC and a win in Nevada and Florida. Mitt is head and shoulders above the
competition in Core Values, Ideas, intelligence, and plans to fix the Federal
Government. Go Mitt!

For those who keep counts of delegates... I used to do that. Then I realized
that there were a zillion delegates and the name of the game was not early or
even late lead, but lead in the winner-take-all big states. The action comes
later. Sad but true, WY and NV and ID don't count much. Michigan does.
But the south, the industrial belts, OH IL IA NY, CA, OR and WA and TX bring the
bacon to the pan.
Does Mitt stand a chance with those states, for nomination and presidency? CA, NY, IL, WA -- a solid no. TX and OH probably not. Florida, depends. OK and Neb probably not.
Wait, there is SD and ND!! Nah, only SD can go for Mitt. ND won't.

I just looked again at that photo of Mitt in SC. Anything odd about it? Why
there are...
No people of ... color? Black? Hispanic? Must not be any of those Americans living in SC. NO wonder the demos are happy. They did not show up for Mitt.

I think Mitt is smart in not focusing on South Carolina. He actually DID
campaign there quite heavily a few weeks ago, as well as yesterday, I believe,
but he's being realistic about the situation. He doesn't have a
chance to finish first there, but he DOES have that chance in Nevada. Why
WOULDN'T he spend most of his time and money in the place where it will go
the farthest? McCain did the same thing with Iowa/New Hampshire, and it got him
a win and some momentum in NH. I know that HISTORY shows that SC and NH are the
big places to win, but this year is anything but ordinary for the Repubs. Mitt
is "playing his cards" correctly. :)

Mitt very wisely took his campaign to Nevada rather than contend for votes in
South Carolina by wallowing in the mud with McCain and Huckleberry. It was
apparent when McCain and Huck were back-stabbing Mitt in Iowa and New Hampshire
that when it suited their purposes, they would back-stab each other. That is now
what they are doing in South Carolina--Huckleberry with his push polling and
McCain with his flip-flopping. That straight talker McCain is now saying he is
for making the Bush tax cuts permanent. Talk about a pandering flip-flopper.
Pay attention to how wisely Mitt conducts his campaign and you can get some idea
of how he will conduct the affairs of the country as president. Mitt is an A-1
strategist, just what the country needs at this moment in history. I am
absolutely in awe of his ability to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Some
have called him arrogant, I call him self-confident. He didn't earn his
millions by being timid.
