"The public is being deceived by just believing cross-deputization is going to solve problems," he said. "The problem needs to be solved in Washington."

Everytime a solution to illegal immigration is proposed, the open borders loons simply say that it "won't work." No proof. No stats. No logic to back up the claim. Just stupid, ignorant denial.

How 'bout we try it and see, Mr. Yapias? Just this once? Trying it, of course, is what he's afraid of - because he knows that it WILL work, and that's what he really doesn't want.

"If we had all of our local, county and state law enforcement trained and authorized ... there's not enough jail space," Bramble said. "ICE doesn't have the capacity to deal with it."

Maybe, but our roads and watersheds and schools don't have the capacity to deal with too much immigration, either. We simply can't build them fast enough. Start deporting illegal criminals and you'll need fewer jail spaces over the long run.
Yapias is wrong | 2:56 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
Mr. Yapias is wrong. Most solutions come from the grass roots level and make their way to Washington, who then takes credit for "solving" the problem. Sen. Hickman needs to pursue this fiercely. It may be the only issue that will keep voters minds off the voucher debacle.
Mr. Yapias needs to decide what team he is playing for.

Police officers come across illegal aliens all the time. Why not cross-deputize some of them (or all of them!) so that those found in the country illegally by officers of the law can be deported? It sounds like a good idea to me.

Mr. Yapias is wrong. Almost all solutions come from the grassroots level. Its the American way. The politicians in Washington just take the credit. If the good people in Mexico would learn that they can make a difference, instead of just waiting for someone in Mexico City to do it for them maybe they wouldn't feel the need to move here illegally. Sen. Hickman needs to pursue this with dogged determination. It may be the only issue that saves some of them from the voters who are sick of their shenanigans with vouchers.

Once an illegal is arrested they should never be released of given bail, they have no constitutional rights. If we can't keep them then put them on a bus back to mexico. If they can't speak engilsh then it is very obvious they are illegals and no quarters should be given. If they had legal status they would have the legal documents to prove that status. Along with deporting those arrssted the families should be arrested along with them and deported on the same bus. The illegals are not going to deport themselves so drastic measure are needed to cut them off and get rid of them. Any possesions were illegaly obtained, so confiscate it and sell it to fund the operation, just as it is used by drug enforcement. Send the ACLU and mexican embassy personnel with them, they are also acting criminally and against the american laws.

Yapias realizes that Washington will NEVER move on this. Go, Utah State Legislature! Lets get a handle on this big problem!
Anonymous | 6:26 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I look like I could be an illegal alien and I do not want the police always singling me out and stopping me, asking for papers. Do not have local law enforcement do this job. It isn't fair.
One Vote | 7:18 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
The objective ought to be to make Utah less attractive to illegals. We have a soft spot in our hearts to begin with, as con men will attest. Any effort to send a "Don't even THINK ABOUT coming to Utah if you are illegal," message will be appreciated. The National Conference of State Legislatures has a great website and tracks the bills introduced around the country. It is worth a look if you are a state rep. lacking ideas of your own.
DahktaD | 7:21 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
Utah is creating this mess and increased migration of illegal aliens to Utah, by legitimizing their illegal presence by providing a Driver Privilege Card. Utah is one of 7 states that do. As conditions get more uncomfortable in the other 43 states for illegals, they will move to states like Utah.
Another obstacle, are Utah employers. Utah portrays itself as the moral high ground of the United States. It's safe to say, a large percentage of the business owners share a pew every Sunday. Put where is their moral compass when they flaunt the law by hiring illegal aliens? Do they not have intergrity or is greed more of their life's direction?
And then we have politicians, cowardly, spineless, who have no sense in the value of our US Constitution. They follow the drummer of the politically correct 'band'...while our country disintegrates into a third world cesspool of violence. Read crime stats...10% of the population committing 70% of the crime. And there are people like Yapias...significant only in his own mind.
Wake up Utah...fight for your state, your families, YOUR CONSTITUTION...it will be gone before you know it.

I agree with the previous posters; this needs to start in the community, not Washington. Washington doesn't care! In fact, it's in the best interest of the people in Washington NOT to pay attention or do anything, because then they'd all lose most of their illegal-immigrant empolyees and housing staff!

But further than that, we need to get our troops OUT of places overseas that no longer pose a threat to us (like Japan!), and set them up along our borders HERE. My son, who is proudly serving in the military, took an oath to protect and defend THIS country from invaders, not any other nation. We are being actively invaded every day, and don't have the resources to combat that invasion because our troops are overseas in places they have no business being. Bring them home, set them up on the borders, and give them orders to treat anyone who attempts to cross as the hostile invading force they are. GUARANTEED, that would stem the tide.

Authorize every legal resident of the state of Utah to report and detain illegal aliens. Start in the schools when they bring their illegal children for a free education. Just call the police and pick up the kids, the parents will follow.
SLK | 8:09 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I hope this passes. Unlike anonymous I think this can be done very fairly. If someone is stopped for any illegal activity and a check of their identity found they were illegal they would be deported. I do not think we should ignore illegal activity because the person might be offended.
Anonymous | 8:24 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
The term "immigration" refers to a person entering our country under legal or illegal status, which status is determined by federal laws, not state laws. This is a national problem that cannot be fixed by enacting local laws. We as a nation have ignored too long the need to allow documented workers to enter the country legally that now we are having to deal with the effects of an outdated immigration policy. Enforcing an outdated law won't solve today's issues.

Deport all illegals | 8:35 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
including the illegal polygamist families throughout the state. Round up all suspected polygamists and stop all others that look like possible polygamists: blonde, blue-eyed toe-heads. When the dominant population begins to feel what it's like to be profiled, some may begin to feel with a heart. While undocumented or illegal immigrants should not be here, the unbridled and misguided anger toward anything "mexican" is creating a powder keg that will only get worse.... and you'll wonder why.
Another bad idea | 8:58 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
This is a tragedy. Clearly education is the way to improve the economy and the qualify of like for the human beings (they are people just like us) that want to live in Utah. They add value and diversity to our community and we should care about their rights too. Local police lack the training and education to deal with federal immigration laws. Passing this legislation would just be cruel and ignorant.
Economic Costs of Illegals | 9:14 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
As the governor contemplates the "economic impact" he should take into account the cost that the taxpayers bear, including: free health care, free public education, the cost of incarceration, the impact of illegal drugs being transported by illegals, the loss of jobs for our youth given to illegals at lower wages ("jobs americans won't do"--yeah right), and the balkanization of the English language and American heritage. I submit that the costs are way too burdensome, in both financial and human terms.

Utah must follow Georgia, S.C., and Arizona and pass tough laws against illegal immigration.

I favor LEGAL immigration, not illegal. It is time for the legislature to act..now, otherwise the illegals will continue to pour into Utah.

We can start by cutting off all assistance to illegals.

Diversity is not the goal here, nor should it be. Forget diversity, but rather focus on being an American first. Otherwise, why come here?

Illegal aliens have no rights as they have illegally entered the U.S. and are not citizens. I fail to see what the confusion is over this point.

Anonymous | 9:31 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
"If we had all of our local, county and state law enforcement trained and authorized ... there's not enough jail space," Bramble said.

"Jail space" assumes a full scale prison with cement walls, iron bars, etc., etc.

Maricopa County Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio has proved that you don't need such full-scale prisons in order to contain illegal immigrants you've caught. Just throw up a guarded tent city with portolets and your problem is solved. Illegals don't like these conditions? No one made them come here.

When did we come to the idea that every jail has to be built with all the expense of a 5 star hotel?
C. Omeo | 9:36 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
Does Tony Yapias, or the Proyecto de Latino de Utah, speak for illegal immigrants? Why wouldn't legal Latino immigrants support a local crackdown? Yes, they may be inconvenienced, but as it is, they're being painted with the same brush as the illegal immigrant (and often Hispanic) criminals featured almost everyday in the news.

Mexico must be very pleased with the current arrangement. They're among the wealthiest nations of the world, but they export millions without high school educations to make money in the U.S. and remit that money back to Mexico. Further, we seem to get a bevy of criminals (estimated 2 million!).

It's a Faustian bargain for us. While we get the benefit of inexpensive labor, we also have to provide services for these workers and their invariably large families. We need to recognize that even if we could afford to admit anyone who wants to be here, it will come at a price (social and economic) and that it's unfair to favor illegals over legal immigrants.

Last: Anyone supporting amnesty of illegal immigrants should take a tour of L.A. or maybe even Glendale. We need to be selective. Hopping a fence should not be the de facto criterion.

"[Illegal immigrants] add value and diversity to our community and we should care about their rights too." - Another Bad Idea

Gee, ABI, thanks for yet another bad idea. I have just run through the Constitution and didn't once come across the word "diversity." Perhaps you can point it out to me?

The purpose of the United States and its government is not to "celebrate diversity" but to protect "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." It is to "preserve the blessings of liberty for ourselves and our posterity" - not the posterity of every random person from every random country in the world who chooses to come here legally or otherwise.

And I do not recall Americans celebrating immigration to California all that much. Over the last 2 decades millions of American citizens have fled California because of the harm caused to that state caused by immigration, especially of the illegal kind. California is now (yet again) in a deep budget crisis ($14 billion and climbing) and its schools are barely above Mississippi's in quality. (That last is not an exaggeration - check the NAEP scores to verify it for yourself).
H. Tlar | 9:41 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
Same old same old. Right, lets take children out of school by the police, now there is an American idea. If it were not for the blood and sweat of our immigrant community at stake, I would love to see you all get your dream, and try to figure out how to live your lives afterward. Oh, and police are not that wild about having ICE enforcement, sorry, not their job. Any one of you want a job cleaning, around 2am. We have a job for you!
Wilkey | 9:42 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
"Local police lack the training and education to deal with federal immigration laws. Passing this legislation would just be cruel and ignorant."

Actually, signing an agreement with the Feds to enforce immigration laws requires training in immigration laws, which is provided by the Feds. SO "lack of training" is not a legitimate excuse for doing nothing.

It appears that you are the ignorant one.

If you want to stop illegal immigrants coming to Utah in droves, the first thing that needs to be done is vote out Huntsman in the coming election. He provides the incentives, meets with the Mexican Presidents so he can figure out more ways to get more illegals here. Heck he even hires them to be school teachers (another job Americans must not be willing to do!)

"If you want to stop illegal immigrants coming to Utah in droves, the first thing that needs to be done is vote out Huntsman in the coming election."

Indeed. This is one Republican who plans to do just that. The problem, I fear, is that the good sheeple of Utah will continue to vote without thinking first.

Congratulations to Rep. Donaldson for his effort. Hopefully, some of those cross deputized should be alloted to do the investigation of those employing the illegals. And maybe starting with those in business owned by members of the legislature.

To "another bad idea"" they bring adversity alright, they are not adverse to selling/using drugs, robbing killing, raping, etc. The MAJORITY of the crimes commited in UT are commited by Hispanics who have no legal status.Send them home by whatever means, just send them home !!
Too many BLEEDING HEARTS don't help the problem only proliferate it.

Conratulations to Rep.Donaldson for his effort. We should all get behind it. At least it's an effort to do something about the illegals, the feds can't. Some of those officers cross deputized should start by examining the employment status of those working for members of our legislatures.
ME | 11:25 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I agree that something needs to be done, unfortunately there are so many things need to be looked at, like..
1-Kids that were born here they cant be deported so then you create another problem to the people that look for those kids (government, relatives, friends, etc).
2-Those job positions that will be open with a 2.8 unemployment rate who will be hired, something to think about too and remember we are not talking blue collar jobs here. A good example is JBS (also known as Miller in Hyrum, UT), after ICE came over a year ago; they havent been able to run their production line at 100%, sad but true.
3-Something else that some people dont realize is that cheap labor equals to none expensive products, so if all these jobs are filled with legal workers companies will not be able to pay cheap labor so they will increase their final prices, which all consumers will end up paying. How much?
tgm | 11:30 a.m. Jan. 16, 2008
It is a simple fix, they are illegal, lets enforce the law, send them back to Mexico. I voted for English only in this state what happened to that? I for one get very angry having to push 1 for English we are AMERICANS, obey the law, thats what it is there for.

I'm tired of my taxes paying for the education of illegals, emergency room visits for primary health care for illegals, and prison costs for illegals. Note to you small minded liberals- It's not a racial issue, it's pure economics. How dare you liberals and illegals tell me that I should pay for the education, health care, and welfare programs of illegals. I have my own family to care for- get the illegals out of the country for which my ancestors spilled their blood to give me this birthright. You liberals want to give it away for free to illegals who want nothing more than to take back the land they say was stolen from Mexico.

The legal immigrants are tired of the bad rap they are getting from the border tunnel/jumpers. If you are dealing drugs and you are caught, I hope the local authorities soon have the right to incarcerate/deport you. If you are a person who looks like "a person of interest" to police, change your ways! Truly become a citizen of the USA. Tell your illegal immigrant friends and family to take the gang mentality and drug dealing ways back to...
And to those who say, who will do the cleaning jobs... I hire a single mother who is a US citizen and white. She AND her children appreciate the money she makes. It keeps them off any public assistance. I am quite capable of doing the jobs myself, but I enjoy helping others, willing to help themselves, when I can.
When I was younger I worked as a maid.

"Kids that were born here they cant be deported so then you create another problem to the people that look for those kids (government, relatives, friends, etc)."

The government does not have the job of looking after them. If their parents can find someone willing to look after them here they can stay. If not they go home with their parents.

"Those job positions that will be open with a 2.8 unemployment rate who will be hired, something to think about too and remember we are not talking blue collar jobs here."

The national rate is over 5% and climbing. Only 36% of teenagers 15-19 had a job last summer. If they can't fill those jobs then they invest in equipment, raise the pay or hire teenagers. These jobs used to almost all be done by legal Americans.

"cheap labor equals to none expensive products, so if all these jobs are filled with legal workers companies will not be able to pay cheap labor so they will increase [the price of products].

We're paying now, just in a different way - paying for new roads, new schools, ad nauseum.

What would an officer look for?

1. color of skin
2. Driver does not speak English
3. How about Canadians? do they get a free ride?

People should ask themselves how would I feel if my son/daughter marries a person of color? and then and only then your true colors will come up.
I do Agree that English must be the official language.

Wow I can not believe how many racists there are, most people posting a comment on this issue are just saying "round them up and ship them back" these are human beings not animals. The person with the idea of rounding them up and placing them in tents to hold them, what is wrong with you? Are you a Nazi instead of jewish people you are after "illegal immigrants" when you know that what you really want is all hispanics out of your country.
Unless you are Native American at one point your ancestors immigrated to North America too, not only that they masacred the people already living in the area.
I don't for one second believe that any of you want legal or illegal immigrants here. What you want is for your state and country to round up any body that is different than you, people that don't fit in to your perfect world.
You people will never be happy because if you do get your way you'll just move on the the next thing not fitting into your world, you'll want to get rid of gays, abortion, etc., it's a never ending list for ignorant people.

Contrary to what some of the people posting on this article have stated, even illegal immigrants have rights and are protected under the Constitution. I'm a Border Patrol Agent on the southwest border, and am living the illegal immigration issue every day. Cross-training local law enforcement to determine citizenship is a good idea, and it works. The vast majority of calls that we get from local authorities involve traffic stops, domestic issues, and other sometimes more serious crimes perpetrated by individuals that don't have any identification or proof of citizenship. In my opinion, profiling is not an issue in these cases. Cross-training does not mean that these local officers are going to go out of their way to arrest suspected illegal aliens. They will just perform those cross-designated duties as part of their regular duties. It's not a cure-all to the problem, but in my educated opinion, it will help.
To: ME@11:25 | 12:23 p.m. Jan. 16, 2008
1-
The kids CAN go with them. I would take my children with me.

2-
Many areas will have reduced production until those jobs are filled by the MANY citizens who need work. It may encourage some to move to Hyrum or elsewhere to get instant employment. That will only improve the local economy since the money will be spent locally not sent back to Mexico.
The unemployment rate only includes those actively searching AND using Job Service to find a job.

3-
I would rather pay a lot more for all the products than continue to pay for the increased crime (increased insurance)rate, the overcrowded schools, the social and public services, the uninsured automobile (auto ins increase), the increased medical expenses to cover the "free" care they get in the emergency rooms for a cold...

We do need to secure the borders. We also need to make it impossible and uncomfortable for them to stay here in Utah. An illegal immigrant camp (with a minimum stay 6 months while papers are processed) in the desert of southern Utah in a tent/compound using the National Guard... sounds great!
Anonymous | 12:32 p.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I'm a DEA agent in California- guess who's selling heroin, meth, and coke to your children---Mexican Nationals- no surprise there eh. Contrary to popular opinion- not all illegals come here to work, they come here to make money-there's a big difference. I can't even begin to count the number of Mexican Nationals I've arrested runnning dope and guns- they do their time in Federal prison, get deported, and come right back. The Mexican gangs and cartels are threatening our American way of life- get it!!
Federal Issue? | 12:40 p.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I've yet to see anyone complain when State and local authorities help enforce federal gun laws, or federal civil rights legislation, or federal anti-discrimination laws. Nobody gets exercised if State and local authorities work with the feds in helping to prevent or solve terrorism cases.

But mention immigration and suddenly the open-borders La Raza crowd comes out of the wood work with a zeal for federalism not known since the Confederacy seceded. It would comical were it not so predictable and hypocritical.

If and when 50% of hispanics are not illegal aliens, skin color won't be much of an indication of immigration status. Even today, I'd expect that lack of English language skills, lack of proper driver license, and lack of insurance would be far more important than skin color or surname in helping officers decide who might need a second look.

If 90%+ of the illegal aliens in this nation looked and sounded like I do, I'd plan on carrying my driver license and passport with me AND I'd be doing something to reduce that number.

There are things (eg securing the border) that Utah can't do. But there is a lot we can and should do.

I can speak first hand on this subject because, my fiance has been deported for the 2nd time.. he has spent the last 6 mths in a federal prison.. for all of you that think you know it all, if you are an illegal they dont release you on bail.. duh.. they put you in jail for many monthes (6-9) then they deport you, if you come back, they put you in the "Hilton" or a federal prison, mine has been there for almost a year.. the reason he came back was becasue I was pregnant and he wanted to be there for the birth of his son, and WORK to support his family so I wouldnt need state assistance, unlike my white dead beat ex who hasnt paid child suport for 6 mths..and what kind of comment was that? lets just go to the school, call the police and arrest the children..if they are born here they are legal..everyone has rights, and everyone deserves freedom and a happy life.. by the way my fiance lived in SLC for 15 yrs, and PAID TAXES.. some of you should be deported just for your ignorant commments on this board.....
Mark Lane | 1:01 p.m. Jan. 16, 2008
What should be happening RIGHT NOW is that anyone booked for an offense in any jurisdiction should be checked to see if they are legal or not. If they are found to be an illegal alien, they should be physically turned over to ICE custody after they have served their time and fines paid. Their fingerprints, photograph, and offense would then be on the books so that they would then not be eligible for citizenship. Does anyone know if anything like this is happening now?
Fearful | 1:04 p.m. Jan. 16, 2008
I am white, I work in a profession that helps children, I volunteer with local organizations that promote education, I have friends, a life here in Utah that I've built and I love.

I'm productive and I give to this community because I love it. But because of government screw ups with paperwork I became illegal two years ago even though I had been here six years previous.

60% of illegal immigrants are non-hispanic. You'd be amazed at how many people think the government should make an exception for people like me. Not because of what I do to help people, but because I'm white.

Too much of this issue is clouded by racism. The truth is that the government needs a better way to let people come here legally. I'm certain that less immigrants would engage in illegal activity if they could provide for their families legally.

The system is unjust, as are the people who support it apparently.

I live in fear of losing everything I have everyday because of a screwed up system and a people steeped in ignorance.

God Bless America!

Simple solution - just give the taxpayers a federal and state tax deduction for every one they report. If someone turns in a legal mexican, then the pay extra on taxes. Turn in a illegal one, get money through tax deduction. Simple, easy way to find those who believe they are above the US Law.

The way this country is going in a few years I may very well want to be deported.

"60% of illegal immigrants are non-hispanic."

Your figure is wrong but irrelevant nonetheless. In fact I wish they were all pasty white WASPs like me - then the open borders nutsos would have to stop calling me a racist for opposing illegal immigration.

"Too much of this issue is clouded by racism. The truth is that the government needs a better way to let people come here legally."

Too much immigration is too much, whether legal or illegal. 70% of our population growth is due to immigration, and its showing its effects on our watersheds, on our roads, and on our wages.

You cannot "solve" a problem simply by legalizing it - whether that's granting amnesty to illegals or upping the numbers of legal immigrants.
