BARF! Looks like I am going to have to eat my words tonight. Boy, did the people of Michigan get fooled.

Well well well! Looks like I am eating my words tonight :( I can't believe how badly the people of Michigan were fooled...
Bob Wittnauer | 7:24 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
This kind of saturation coverage makes it almost disingenuous whenever someone says the Romney campaign has been the victim of anti mormon bigotry. Even if he were the "best" candidate or the one that america needs (he's not), the overlapping zone of support overlapping the mormon homeland so neatly is not a coincidence.
Rob | 7:32 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Yeah, eat those words! Finally a real state, with real Republicans, no huge evangelical votes, no big independent voters like NH, finally real conservatives who know a real republican. Maybe we will not have to live in Europe like the democrats want, or pay higher taxes like Huckabee and McCain want. Hopefully, soon I can pay lower health insurance like Massachusetts, where prices have been cut in half, could of been lower, but the liberal congress there would not follow all of Romneys ideas, hopefully when he is president we can use all his ideas for health insurance.

I'm OK with a Romney win, but conservatives will be disappointed when he governs liberally. Personally, I liked the old (more liberal) Mitt and wish he would stop pandering to the right.
Blake was fooled | 7:36 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Blake's prediction was foolish. The people of Michigan realize that "it's the economy stupid", and that Mitt was the only candidate capable of fixing that. Blake, give the people of Michigan credit for realizing this. Your attempt at reverse psychology to advance your agenda was a "fool's errand". Stop playing the fool.

Go MITT!
I'm a believer | 7:37 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I wasn't sure Mitt had a chance at getting the nomination, but Mitt made me a believer tonight. Awesome!
Mike Johnson Fallon NV | 7:44 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I wonder about the following two statements in the article:

"Mitt Romney finally crossed the finish line first, winning Tuesday's Michigan Republican primary" kind of like winning Wyoming, but I guess Wyoming is too small to count as a state in some people's minds.

"Romney's new focus on economic issues" Romney's campaign has focused on economic issues all along, except when distracted by other issues like defending his religion.

Will the deseret news stop talking about romney now?

NO?
w00t | 7:53 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
He won his "home state" by 6 points (as of right now). Not exactly stunning.
Blake | 7:54 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I accept that I made a false prediction today, but stand by the fact that Michigan has been fooled.

Utah County: don't get too rowdy tonight. I would hate to see news on KSL about rowdy root beer riots tearing up downtown Provo!
Just wondering | 8:03 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
As a Republican, but not necessarily in line with the far right, I'm wondering what would be wrong with a more liberal Republican as President.

Also, in reference to Blake's postings (and others with similar opinions)if a group doesn't agree, it's because they've been "fooled" or mislead. Is it totally impossible that the Blakes might not be the ones who are fooled?
Anonymous | 8:06 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Clinton is really starting to lose ground to Uncommitted... Wow.

Mitt really deserved this win, and more credit for his two second place victories.

As it stands, Mitt is basically the frontrunner, with 60+ delegates to McCain's 10 and Huckabee's 21... Also two state wins (both by wide margins.)
California | 8:08 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Seems the Mormon bashers, i.e., anti Romney, realize their bias is showing, and it is not just an opinion. For he who hopes the DN will now stop talking about Romeny should see cnn.com front page. For the one who said enough about two second places and that it should read "lost" need to count the total delegates Romney now has. The only real insight here is Romney may be a bit farther left than expected, but that is ok. Huckabee is scary, and I am not sure McCain can cause change.
James | 8:18 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt had to win Michigan because he is the expert of the candidates on the economy and look at Michigan. Enough said. McCain must be surprised because he won Michigan before and there was no democratic primary so he had the advantage of getting democratic and independent votes which is how he won New Hampshire as the reports indicated. Romney won in New Hampshire for republican votes. He deserved to win. The man is a genius and an amazing fellow.

Yay! Go Mitt! I am rootin' for you!
Former journalist | 8:43 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
First of all, this is an excellent story -- with dead-on analysis done under deadline pressure. Second, only those of us like I who grew up in the mighty industrial states of the 1950s and 60s -- not Utah -- who can appreciate the struggle for equal rights played out in those states -- can appreciate the kind of man Mitt Romney's father was at the time. You could never have been a governor of Michigan at the time without being in touch with the roots of equality and the roots of equal financial footing that was the zeitgeist -- and I believe the touchstone of Democracy -- at the time. Mitt Romney is no fool, and if he is anything like his father -- which I think Michigan says he is -- then you must take this man seriously. You don't become a Republican and Mormon governor of Massachusetts without appealing to the broad spectrum of this country. As a non-Mormon and objective observer, I say, Go Mitt.
Michael, New Zealand | 8:44 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
President Romney sounds great! A man with brains and all round ability leading the world will go a long way. His Christians Ethics and theogical disciplines would be welcomed by many more people around the world than some may think! America has a lot more work to do in this world, to help freedom grow in the future! (Liberal is good when its moral.)
California Voter | 8:51 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Congrats Mitt!!

Good Luck as you proceed forward!!
Count Delegates! | 8:52 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
When will the media focus more on delegates than states and votes? Mitt has been getting hammered by them and yet if the election would have ended BEFORE Michigan, he would have won! Maybe now that he won Michigan they'll respect him a bit more?
PaulJD | 8:53 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
The article claims that this was Romney's first win. Does anyone remember Wyoming?
Tai H. | 9:04 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Wow! The Great Lakes area sure is liberal. Then again, Walter Mondale is from that region.

Romney is no less liberal than Walter Mondale.

Keep your candidate, I'm a conservative Mormon.

ROMNEY! 42!(more than next two combined)

If you can't do the math at least read the writing on the wall. It will get plainer before the night is through that Mitt is going all the way on delegates.
A Win Worth Waiting For: | 9:06 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
McCain must be in a state of shock. He won Michigan by 100,000 votes in 2004. His chickens came home to roost. What goes around, comes around. Huckleberry is singing the same old tune--i.e. they've outspent us $1,000,000.00 to $1.00 and bla, bla, bla. And telling the same old jokes--i.e. we must be over the target because we're taking so much flak and bla, bla, bla. Enough, already. Mitt beat both of them soundly fair and square. Great win, Mitt. Just a harbinger of things to come. Goooooooo, Mitt.
Read the Print!!! | 9:12 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Bottom line:

Mitt Romney won because the Democratic National Convention stripped Michigan of its delegates. Therefore, liberals who would normally vote for a Democrat in the Democratic Primary vote for a Republican in an OPEN PRIMARY.

Democrats voted for Mitt Romney in a DEMOCRATIC STATE that votes DEMOCRAT. Democrats voted for John McCain in a DEMOCRATIC STATE that votes DEMOCRAT.

Republicans voted for Mike Huckabee and Fred Thompson. That's it. Simple enough.

Mike Huckabee will win South Carolina, because Mike Huckabee is a conservative, and Mitt Romney is not.

I know that might hurt the feelings of Utah liberals. Yes, the era of big government is over. Sorry, Mitt!
Tai H. | 9:30 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt Romney voted for Paul Tsongas in the 1992 Massachusetts presidential primary.

Mitt Romney is an evil man who will never get my vote. Mitt Romney is a liberal.

*snort* Read the print, you are smoking something.

Let's look at the numbers, shall we? Romney got about 31% of Dem crossover votes, and McCain got about 40 percent or so. Paul got most of the rest. That's hardly "giving the election to Romney"
bob carlisle | 9:37 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
it looks like non mormons like him too. go mitt. hey bigots with mormon hate, go to a new state!
Funny guy | 9:41 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I get tired of the tiring comments ragging on the DN for hosting so many Romney articles. Sorry you don't get it. Let me explain. Mitt is the only candidate with Utah ties. He is the only candidate who has lived in Utah. WOW. Maybe the state has more interest in Mitt than you do. Since you are reading online anyway, just go to the news from the states you like.
true blue nevada guy | 9:42 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt is now on his way to win more states. I will back him all the way GO MITT,,,, I hope you will do it too....

dont you mean won, good point though
To Read: | 9:45 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Obviously you can't read. Democrats did not come out to vote in the primary like they came out to vote for McCain 8 years ago.

McCain lost because he did not get the Dem vote this time. Today it was mostly true Republicans that voted and they voted for Mitt.

Even McCain joked that he needed the Dems and Indies to come out and support him. McCain is so liberal and bad for this country that if the unfathomable happens and he gets the R nomination then I will vote Dem for the first time in my life.

The only two valid Republican candidates this time around are Mitt and Rudy, with my preference in that order.

Please don't cry for that closet Dem McCain.
To Math: | 9:50 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Several articles state that Michigan will most likely seat all of its delegates at the national convention when that time comes around. So, you could put

Romney 72!

More than all of the rest combined so far!!

Go Mitt !!!
CB | 9:53 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
"Read the Print" is right on a few things! He will win S.C. because he's an preacher. Demo's and Midliners will flock closer to Romney and McCain. That's good in the general election because they can sway votes, while Chucklebee will get only the conservative, religious types and be beat very badly! Unless there is some huge crisis between now and Nov. the US population is not going back to a southern/Bush/Hucklebee (what's his name again?) scenario! We need someone who can swing votes in the general or the Reps. don't have a chance in 08'. If Reps. want to win they'll vote Romney at the convention! If we want to lose and forget who even ran in 08' Chuckleberry's our boy! Now I remember his name! Do we really want a "President Huckabee" anyway? He can have Billy Bob as his COS, and Betty Sue as SOD! And we complain now about not being respected around the world? Huckabee? Please!
Ray | 10:14 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
It was McCain that did well among Independents and Democrats, not Romney. Mitt Romney won by double digits among Republicans and by 24% among very conservatve voters. The author of the comment titled "read the print" thought otherwise. I'm reading the results right now and Romney won the Republican votes in Michigan by a landslide. Go Romney!!!
Matt | 10:15 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Go Mitt!!!!

I'm not being supportive.

I hope he leaves.

Actually, I'd take him over that mess Huckabee. No good can come of that.
Mitt's a twit. | 10:24 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Lovely. Now Mitt can waste even more of his fortune.
romney supporter | 10:42 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
There is only one candidate on either side who has the business experience to help the ailing Amercan economy. We are in a recession, a bear market, and as such job losses are only going to increase. Think you're immune from losing your job? Ask some of the employess of Citibank right about now. Mitt has the business savy and experience to guide us through some troubling economic times. Michigan leads the way. We need a businessman and a good one at that to lead the country. We don't need another politician as President. Romney is the one.
Phil | 10:58 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
So much for polls, I thought this was going to be a close one. Romney IA 2 WY 1 NH 2 MI 1, not bad. Huck IA 1 WY +4 NH 3 MI 3 McCain IA 3 WY +4 NH 1 MI 2 This may be a strang elections year, thanks to the McCain Feingold campaigne finance elections bill.
TOAD | 10:59 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Put on your Mitt-ens and warm up to a great leader! Vote for MITT ROMNEY!
MR. BUTUAN | 11:02 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Congratulations Mitt! Hope you win in Nevada and Florida. I hope that the media will post the total number of delegates won by the candidates. Hope Mitt gets more donations and support. Go Mitt! Go home Mike "Jollibee".
