Perhaps he could be completely honest about it and tell the Michiganians that their state is ushering in the new Depression.
The manufacturing sector of America's economy is clearly an end of an era.
Mitt's the Man | 2:23 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt's the man to turn things around for Michigan. They will only benefit by voting for him today. He has an impressive record that proves he will do it. Good luck Mitt! You have my vote!
Remembering | 5:02 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
If Mitt fights for the auto industry like he fought for a woman's right to chose and gay rights (pledges he also made), then the auto industry is done for.

Thanks for the pessimism | 5:49 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
To Anonymous:

It's people like you that will sit on the sidelines and cry that our economy is a lost cause. You, like most democrats (which I'm sure you are), are wrong! Let's elect leaders who will quit stifling our economy with tax increases and government regulations, and you'll see that our economy can rebound and be the envy of the world.

It's time for the silent majority to stand up and throw out the bums who won't make the tough decisions! Go Mitt.

Sounds synical, Problem is Walmart is much more to blame for this mess than Michigan. People have been in a Walmart Depression for a very long time it has little to do with cars.

Michigan is the first state to find out the full effects of NAFTA and the unequal trade arrangements with China. No Michigan resident can compete with either Mexican or Chinese wage structure. Add to that the "union busting" drive by conservatives and jobs have fled the state to the world economic low-wage sectors. Michigan is just the first state to see its manufacturing sector go abroad. Others will soon follow the trend despite promises of presidential candidates.
Art | 6:30 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt Romney already has won in one state and has the most delegates. How is it that the Deseret News leaves this postitve detail out of this story?
russ | 6:38 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I kind of hope that Mitt becomes President. Then I can measure how much of this hyperbole in Michigan was just plain, unashamed pandering to people who have been hurt by Bush's economy. Not once was ush mentioned. Hmmmmm. Not once did Mitt mention that Detroit's designers were getting skunked by Toyota, etc. Not once. And to blame Washington... how trite. How full of hot air. And to not have gas mileage standards set by government? Then bring on $5 a barrel oil. Take out your wallet and leave at the gas station. Thank you, thank you. If the Koreans and the Europeans and the Japanese can build a car with high miles per gallon, why can't Detroit? Whoa... does that qualify as being unpatriotic to point that out?

Well, maybe pandering is where it is at. The race is tight. It is his home state, he continues to wear blue, and he has gathered the grandchildren for the photo op's. Yeah, I guess he has a chance after all. It's gonna be close.

And then what? Not SC for sure. Or Florida. Hmmmm. California? nah... problems on the horizon.

Is it the government's fault that the U.S. auto industry designes, builds, and markets cars that sell poorly?
WC | 6:47 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Oh my gosh - I'm so glad there was another Mitt Romney story this morning. I woke up with this horrible nightmare that there were other people I could vote for this election coming up on the 5th of February. I was horrified. My church leaders discourage choice and I have tried to avoid it. But looking at deseretnews.com I have been calmed by the fact there is only one candidate. I can't wait to vote for him.
To Anon | 6:57 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
That first comment is so typical of all the Anonymous people in this country. They love to fault, to pull down, to deflate, to look for the dark lining. If something looks good then there is bound to be a chink in the hairdo somewhere. Let's find it and destroy them. Right. That seems to be the point of being Anonymous. No responsibility.

Let's turn it around. Let's choose a fighter. Let''s get someone elected that can rebuild. I wonder who could do that for America. Someone positive. Someone business minded. Sounds like a job for Super Mitt, able to rebuild in a single term, or two. Sounds like a good time for him. Go Mitt.

Let's see now. Mitt is a conservative Republican and he is going to have the Federal Government fix the Auto industry. The Auto Industry that has been destroyed by it's own unions. Wow! Mit seems to be a man for everybody, Democrats, Rebublicans, Socialists... I'll bet he could do it and not even raise taxes. He is the greatest candidate yet.
Bob Jesterton | 7:09 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I wonder if any other candidates, or indeed any other party campaigns anymore.
More Mitt lies | 7:20 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt cares so more about the auto industry, he left the state to run for governor in MA.
Interesting Romney article | 7:36 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
There's an interesting Romney article over at the NY Times that I agree with about how he's a great guy but has hurt himself with his campaign:

don't worry - be happy | 7:47 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
The economic situation is and always has been controlled by 1% of the disgustingly rich who manipulate the whole scenario. (I thought EVERYBODY knew that?)
People today are losing their buying power by leaps and bounds and are left playing the "my political party is better than yours" stupid game instead of recognizing the situation for what it is.
To them I say, max out all your credit cards "keeping the economy afloat" if this makes you feel patriotic or something. I'm paring down, getting out of debt and telling my children "you really don't need that BMW to be happy in life."
Vett C. | 7:57 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Why is it taking so long for America to wake up and care for the American manufacturing industry in general? Greed has taken American jobs to China. Corporate American has benefited from hurting blue-collar jobs.

Its about time for America to punish multi-national corporations for taking American jobs oversees. Lets tax corporations for taking jobs elsewhere, lets tax boards, presidents, and executives for taking jobs. Lets reward business for bringing jobs back.

Most readers are educated, bright, and have jobs. Let us push the alarm bell now that if our manufacturing dies America's economy dies too.

If we don't have jobs and economic stability we don't have social stability. Free trade is not fair trade. The Republicans, Democrats, and greed have betrayed America.

Bring back American jobs, bring back a kinder America.

I am concerned that no politician is prepared, capable or able to fight for American manufacturing.

Mitt Romney may be just like Bush--unwilling to help America's manufacturing society.

Protectionism Works | 8:06 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
The biggest economic misunderstanding is that tariffs were a major cause in the depression of '29. This is untrue. Tariffs protect a nation's industry when foreign countries dump their cheap products in another nation. McCain and Washington people sat back and watched this happen and our auto industry is being overtaken. Steps should have been taken to protect American manufacturing jobs and they were not. Gee, think it could be the lobbyist buying out our government. I am convinced that the American gov't today is corrupt on all accounts. We give money to dictators, prop up regimes, and then we end up paying a fortune in money and lives. Meanwhile, companies set up shop in foreign countries and produce cheaper products. Granted, states like Michigan need to cut taxes and unions need to understand the market economy. However, America should not subsidize the growth of emerging nations at the expense of middle income jobs.

I think Mitt can do the job.
Ha! | 8:43 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I can't wait to see the look on all your silly faces when your boy Mitt loses in his own home state.

Maybe then (although I doubt it), you'll get it through your thick skulls that he's not going to be in the race for president.

Oh, the anticipation as the hours tick on by.

I hope you sent him lots of money! :)

Re: Vett C. | 8:45 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Do you realize your comments are anti-capitalist? It's fine to be protectionist if you want, but it means a stagnant or even shrinking economy. People have to learn new trades and skills. That's how you progress. That's why America largely isn't an agrarian or textile culture anymore.
Gordan H. | 9:00 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
We are all hopiing for a big win for McCain, today. Mitt and his experience in private equity would ruin Michigan.
SL Resident | 9:09 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Actually, I think Mitt will win in MI, but it would sure be nice if didn't and we could read about something/someone else in the DMN for a change.

Re: "thanks for pessimism" 5:49
Is a Republican who sees no fault in going from a huge surplus to the largest debt in America's history under The Bush Doctrine that only knows how to generate money from war. (Mr. And Mrs. Cheney's Halliburton and Lockheed Martin and latest arms sale to the Saudis)
I, on the other hand, am a cockeyed realist who sees the writing on the wall and am preparing for tough times ahead. I recommend this for everyone.
Tired of Mitt | 9:25 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I'm kind of tired of the Desnews ONLY reporting on Mitt.

There are other people in this race too.

From AZ | 9:28 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt is the best one for the job and I will most likely vote for him. BUT McCain is the only one that is going to be able to beat Hillary or maybe Obama.

Why because McCain is liberal enough to attract the more conservative Dems and more the liberal Reps. The leftwing Dems will have to vote for Hilary but the middle of the road Dems that are not quite sure like the rest of us on Hillary or Obama will be more likely to vote for McCain. The Right wing Reps will have no choice as it is either Hillary or a more liberal McCain. So McCain would have a good chance of winning. Mitt on the other side even if he is the better leader and businessman will not get the Middle of the road vote and would lose to any Dem. Religion is a big part. Should not be but will be.

I would rather have Mitt but realistically McCain is the only one that will beat the Dems in Nov.

McCain is not bad but is a bit too far left on many things but compared to Hillary, well there is no copmarison.

Romney For Prophet!

Instead of President, Prophet seems more fitting.
The Deseret News covers him and his every move with grand precision.
The breaking news of how many times he's read the book of mormon is next.
Honestly, if you have the reasons Romney didn't win in the story of McCain's victory then there's a problem.
Maybe I'm wrong but still very confident when I say that most republican mormons would jump off a bridge if Mitt asked them to do it.

Embarrassed by Mitt | 10:55 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt embarrassed us again this morning by doing a photo op with a woman who lost her job. The only problem? Mitt forgot to mention that the woman was the mother of a paid staffer. Why does Mitt say and do so many stupid things? Aren't other LDS people as embarrassed by him as I am?
Mitt is OK | 10:56 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
but personally, I would rather McCain win. Even Obama or Hillary would be better that Huckabee who I view as a threat to minority religious freedom.
Tired of Free Trade Agreements | 11:55 a.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Mitt doesn't get it. Yes, CAFE standards and the tax structure are part of the problem; however, FTA's are about low cost production, not about "competition."

FTA's ignore labor costs, regulatory costs, litigation and tax costs. We are the highest cost producer on the planet--largely due to government.

Mitt has said nothing about rejecting the WTO which allows 3rd world nations to dominate us; nothing about NAFTA, CAFTA nor the SPP Agreement paving the way to a northAmerican trade union; and nothing about the VAT refunds to foreign exporters. Indeed, his website decries "protectionism."

Unfortunately, Mitt is another big-government, globalist republican. Government cannot solve Detroit's manufacturing ills because government is the cause.
Judy | 12:00 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
I can hardly wait for the Dems to take over. They will give us free everything.Just like the Soviet Union did for Russia for 70 yrs. Then when the US economy collapses and all our enemies demand payments for the credit they have propped us up with for the last 25 yrs maybe then the American people WILL WAKE UP WHEN YOU CAN'T FEED YOUR CHILDREN BECAUSE EVERYTHING HAS COLLAPSED.And your NEIGHBORING STATES ARE FIGHTING WITH YOU OVER WHO GETS THE WATER RIGHTS FOR YOUR COMMUNITY.AMERICA YOY BETTER WAKE UP NOW THE HAND WRITING IS ON THE WALL.OH IF WE ONLY HAD FOLLOWED THE PROPHETS.
bob carlisle | 12:23 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
mitt is a good guy who has done alot for utah why not report about him. if a marriot or a huntsman ran for president i would also love to wake up to read about them, instead of a hucka-garbage who preaches against my honest way of life.

I think bob carlisle must have forgotten how ruthlessly Romney downsized one of his companies taking away jobs, healthcare, retirement benefits, etc.
Sorry bob, the mega-wealthy aren't MY heroes.
Give it a rest | 1:14 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
Give it a rest! Obviously DMN endorses Mitt Romney just like other newspapers endorse candidates in other states. Nothing wrong with that. If you don't like it, keep it to yourselves.
bob carlisle | 1:53 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
hey anonymous did i say anything about romneys record or principals or anything of the sort. just because you are a pessimist doesnt mean you have to attack me or mitt two people you obviosly have never met. mitt is relatively local. this is local news. if you want a paper that isnt locally biased dont you dare read about the jazz, the governor or anything else utah, you should read a national paper, because obviously you are too good to be a utahn

Some of you parrots sound just like those old geneva steel guys when they started using aluminum in cans. Or I remember in the 70's and early 80's everyone was worried Japanese cars were going to crush the American auto industry. Why does the government always have to step in? Maybe this would force the emergence of a brand new car company with competetive vehicles.
jr | 5:43 p.m. Jan. 15, 2008
interesting that Willard Milton has never bothered about Michigan until he needs their votes.
