Winder irate over cities' going it alone
9 comments | Read story
Winder wants the power of being Sheriff, something Kennard was fine with giving up in order to stop the bleeding. The arrogance is Winders, not Kennards.
It's obvious Winder does "not know what to do" as quoted. He's not alone - many have shot for a Metro Police concept in SL Valley and failed. I don't know the answer either, but will jump behind anyone that comes up with a solution. Until then (and after too) it's incumbent upon each cities' leaders to provide the best services for their citizens - be it as a seperate agency or part of a group.
I could go on and on about the benefits of a metro department because there are a lot. It is amazing to me that there isnt a bigger push for this, what it all comes down to is politics and greed. People need to stand up and demand this service. This bill is a waste of time and energy. We need bills promoting an entire consolidation not just some half A**ed attempt. The state needs to step in and do the responsible thing since the cities arent willing to.
CH representatives realized this, and that was one of the driving forces to creating their own force. If Winder had tried to be more like Kennard, who understood what the cities concerns were, then CH probably would have never left, and we would already have a UPD. Don't be surprised if Holladay tries to join with CH in creating a joint force for both cities.
I agree we need to come up with a solution. But that solution has to come close to meeting the needs of all involved. Good luck to whomever can come up with a model that works for everyone. Compromise will be the key to success. This bill might help because it will make it so one person can't kill the whole thing.
There is abosolutely No Way a small local enforcement agency like CH could ever handle an emergency of more than one traffic accident at a time, let alone manage their own SWAT,Ivestigative Services,K-9,domestic violence, quality annual training and the variety of other services a Sheriffs consolidated deparment can offer. CH will be way over $5 Million to start up costs for their small department and will still not have all the other necessary services to protect their citizen in case of a real tradegy!!!
Mayors' should be Mayor's they are risking their citizens by treading on ground they know nothing about!!!!!!!
