I think Sloan is a great coach, but I will never support his team, or be on his
team, or on his staff, or in his presence, any more than I can stand being
around someone who's constantly smoking, farting, or belching. Bad
language isn't a religious question. It's a question of respect for
others. people of all reliogions or no religion can respect others and learn a
language of respect.

I am offended that you categorize farting with swearing and smoking. Swearing
and smoking are obvious choices people make in their lives. Farting is, in many
cases, a terrible condition that people have to live with, by no choice of their
own. MGBED (Momentary Gaseous Bowel Exhaustion Disease) plagues hundreds of
thousands of people in our country. It has cost people jobs, families, dates,
and self respect. At least you have the option of getting away from the smell.
These people are forced to breath the toxic gas wherever they go. Please be a
little more considerate in categorizing people who make choices to do things
that offend with people who are victims of an awful disease (albeit one that
impacts others in the vicinity).

Man I have been watching the Jazz for as long as I can remember and I must be
watching something different than the you have been, because I have heard Sloan
swear and cuss, but not in the ways you have explained. That seems a bit much
and over the top. "He uses it to degrade, demean,humiliate,belittle
everything he comes in contact with !" Come on, That seems a bit extreme to
me. Sloan is a good leader, and a great coach, we have been luck to have him
this long.

I have to laugh at what a bubble everyone lives in around here. I guess
that's okay; people are entitled to abstain from hearing foul language, and
as long as you live in Utah, that is somewhat possible. All I have to say is,
don't leave the state.
On another note, blaming Sloan for his salty tongue is ridiculous. Blame ESPN and TNT. They are the ones who brought the locker room to your house. If you don't like what the locker room has to say, then it is your right to make a statement as a TV owner and CHANGE THE CHANNEL. No one forced you to watch ESPN, and Sloan has been swearing for 60 years.
I really don't see how everyone is so shocked that this happened, either. Admit it: you were looking for it. Just turn off the tube if your ears can't take it.

Hands down, the most ineffective use of red herring argumentation I have ever
seen. This isn't a medical writing blog, and your comment had absolutely
nothing to do with Sloan wearing a microphone. Moderators, are you out
there?

Sounds like some are so disgusted they have quit watching (like some of you have
suggested).
Many more are disgusted but keep watching and wish that Jerry could control his mouth.
Many others keep watching and either don't care or are not offended by his mouth.
I have heard no one though who is paying their money and time to watch the Jazz just so they can hear Sloan's foul mouth.
If Sloan keeps it up a sizeable portion of the fans will continue to be offended - some that support the Jazz and some that have quit.
If he cleans up his language it sounds like no one will be offended. In fact a portion of the fans will be grateful and admire him for it. Those that don't care about his language won't care if he doesn't swear either.
Shouldn't that make his choice easy? Tone it down Jerry and continue to do the many things you do well. I for one am rooting for you and will hold you up as an example to others trying to watch what they say.

I missed the first game I knew sloan would drop the f bomb, I sad that I missed
the game. I knew he would cuss it sloan for hecks sake. I think All these
things are distracting. Thats what the networks have halftime commentators for.
Like Bill Walton and Steven A and Chuck and Kenny. Thats what they get paid for
leave the coaches alone. I also hate ESPNS interviews with coaches during
timeouts and after quarters that is just BAD. They called timeout to talk to the
team not do an interview. I just hope Sloan swears again.

It's not just Jerry. You hear swearing all the time in sports and
everywhere you go. So whats the big issue here? Charles Barkley anyone? I have
heard just as much swearing in church ball. Is anyone supposed to be perfect?

Jerry Sloan is a great person. I say that as an active Mormon who was taught not to judge people and be kind to others. So stop judging people and let them be themselves. Don't be the reason many people leave the church and hate Mormons. Be a good Mormon.

Sloan's mouth is his own insecurities he is just trying to show the fans
that he cares. If he would just pay attention to the game instead. He is just
ignorant he doesn't know better, don't swear at the problem fix it.
You will never see him say something positive to anyone. His negativity creates
this problem. Sloan feeds on negativity that's his life. You cant change an
old crow so we need to get read of him. Wouldn't it be great to have a good
positive, congenial, concerned, productive team player, helper, ex ampler,
innovative coach the list goes own. NBA players need this kind of coach to win
the title. It's not because we haven't had the talent this year or
years past to win the NBA championship. No it's because we haven't had
a coach with these kind of qualities. Sloan doesn't think he needs to
motivate his players he never has. I am sorry that is part of any good coach
that is successful. I could go on, anyway we need positive things to come out of
Sloan's mouth not all negative.

You tell him!!! What does he think writing about such an absurd condition
(MGBED). Does that even really exist? I never heard it mentioned in my Pre-Med
class at SLCC.

Maybe you should say something like he "swears like a guy who swears all the time." Please show some respect to the sometimes overlooked branch of our armed forces.

I don't care of Jerry turns the entire Delta Center blue with his cussing.
That's the way he coaches, and it seems to work, he is the longest running
coach with the same team, in all of sports. If you don't want to hear him
cuss turn off the sound and use your radio.
Or better said if your just too tender and weak hearted, and can't stand the heat, stay out of the kitchen.
I've played for some darn good LDS coaches, and you don't want to know what they said in the private confines of the locker room.
It seems as if 90% of the posters have never put on the uniform and played the game, you are clueless and much too pure for me.

Deerhunter: Are you trying to say that if Sloan stopped swearing and being
negative that the Jazz would win a championship? Hogwash! If the Jazz did win
a championship, would you be offended by Jerry's swearing? Have you ever
sat close to the floor or near the bench of the opposing players? It's not
just Jerry, it's all the coaches (and the players have the foulest mouths
of them all)! But kids hold these overpaid athletes on pedestals, foul mouths
and all. You're fooling yourself if you think a mild-mannered, non-swearing
coach can motivate his team and win a championship. Sometimes the players just
don't get it unless there is some negativity. Your comment about Sloan
feeding on negativity, that's his life, is absurd. Have you known him all
his life? Who are you to judge others, particularly with the comment that
"Sloan's mouth is his insecurities"? If you don't like
what's going on, stay away. I can't believe that in all the years of
coaching the Jazz, you can honestly believe that Jerry hasn't been
successful.

Larry Miller WAKE UP, put a fork in Jerry that turkey is more than done. He is
not a championship coach and never will be. If you want a trophy you need to
find a leader than is a champion leader not a "Good" Coach, as for
language, gee they finally caught what he has been doing for years and nail his
fanny for it. He is only upset because he got caught showing the world how he
really feels about his players. Just once it would be nice to hear something
positive out of his mouth, in all his years he only complains and down grades
his players. Is he PMS prone all the time or only when he is coaching, on
television, doing an interview or just plain at a game??????

What ever happened to free speech? If the man has to cuss to get the attention
of a bunch of overpaid slackers because they've got no pride or are just
lazy, then by all means...let the F-bombs fly! I'd rather my coach show
some heart & spirit to win than to sit on the sidelines & wring his
hands & say stuff like "golly we sure need to rebound better" or
"shucks we missed another free throw".
Even Phil Jackson (the mild mannered beatnik coach for the Soho Poets err...LA Lakers) hates the mic rules. Get a grip sports fans...cursing has been in this game as long as jock itch & athlete's foot so I doubt your indignation will change things.

How pathetic they are as broadcasters. Jerry will at least keep us

Anonymous: I am saying one goes with the other bad temper, negativeness,
obnoxious, being out of control and down grading the team. This only show-es
negativity. So they make a bad call its OK to get upset you don't have to
use the F word and some of the others. Get a vocabulary and tell the referees in
a intelligent manner. Then fix your problems and show the opposite, and be
positive and try and encourage the players. Get caught telling the players
something positive like nice job, way to go, you beat him. No No you wont ever
hear that from Sloan. Just how do you think teams get elevated to rise to the
occasion and go be hon some of there talent to win the big one. Who are you to
judge me, I do know Sloan and been with him outside the arena. His cup is always
half empty. All this negativity goes hand and hand with the mouth. We need a
change in coaching with the talented player we have. This team could win it all
but, will never have the chance. How long have we said that?????

I think Sloan is a great coach and has shown in the past few years that he can
adjust with the times and with new players. He has a great winning percentage,
and that's why he's still with the Jazz. And his coaching strategy is
right on -- make the players play tough defense and hustle, set hard screens,
and pass to the open player. I doubt any other coach could have got so much
from the players he has had to work with. But I wish he didn't use the F
word so much. It shows a lack of respect, for one thing. I think it cost him
the chance to coach the U.S. national team a few years ago. Still, he would
have outcoached Larry Brown and John Thompson in international play, that's
for sure.

I'm sure the use of the F-word is what eliminated Jerry from contention. I
heard that that is the second item on the priority list for selecting a coach.
If I remember right, number one item is that the coach has never told a lie.

Point taken regarding the "sailor swearing" remark, swearing like a
sailor is a common thing for me to say. I'm actually in the armed forces
and I hear it all the time. Didn't think of it as offensive, but I suppose
some could take offense to it, so I apologize.
It really was a surprise that Giricek wasn't the subject of the swear. I guess when you swear like "a person who swears all the time", it could be about anything.

I have lived in many places in Europe and many different states. And the biggest
culture shock I had was when I had to transplant to Utah. Ive never seen or
heard a more self righteous opinionated group of people anywhere.
Most have never been out of this bubble called Utah surrounded by all these odd ideas of how your supposed to live and how others should live.
I wish I found this article when it came out so all you morons could read this response.
If Jerry's language offends you, then dont listen to him. Is it that big of a deal, someone using language that is generally accepted in areas outside of Utah as normal? How aobut being offended by somthing that actually affects people, like atrocities going on in africa, or homelessness or the ghettos of america.
Keep your opinions to your little bubbled world, if you hear somthing you dont understand, go ask your bishop, if he doesnt understand then just fast and pray about it. Maybe the answer of dealing with the rest of the world will come to you.
