I like how the Romney campaign says it will pay back its financial donors if he is not the nominee. Of course when he does not get the nomination, he will say that it was just a figure of speech. I think I understand now how he made his millions.
uh-oh! | 3:11 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Uh-oh!
He's figured out that his hefty bankrolling of negative TV ads has been a dismal failure.
Or maybe God told him that what he was doing wasn't the right thing to do.
Power to the People | 3:17 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I can't wait to see how you all try to put a positive spin on this one.

Wow! Why is the news media SO NEGATIVE toward Romney?
This article says "A campagne that badly needs a win"
Hey, he did win Montana. They give him credit where credit is due begrudgingly in the last paragraph.

We all know that many people only read the headlines, or beginning sentences because of time constrants. UNFAIR!

I don't understand | 3:29 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
This article states: Spencer Zwick, Romney's national finance director, told the phone bankers: "If for some reason he is not the nominee, all those funds will be returned to the donor himself."

Will Mitt be returning donor money from his own pocket, if he doesn't become the Republican nominee? What do contributors get if he DOES become the nominee?
S.S. Sunk | 3:52 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
When all the bailing stops, Mitt will realize he sailed with the wrong crew on the wrong ship. He should have known about the rough seas long before he left port.
Spence | 4:11 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
McCain, go kick his butt in Michigan!
Scott | 4:14 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Sounds like a good strategy, Huckabee will win South Carolina anyway, might as well focus on Michigan.
what the? | 4:38 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
why is everone hatin on romney?
Anony | 4:58 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
"why is everyone hating on Romney?"

It's the hate Mormonism syndrome. The world is full of haters. Mormon haters are of the more viral strain.
Why do we hate Romney? | 4:58 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
He takes credit for things he did not do, he flip flops on moral issues, if he did not want something like a vote from you, do you think he would even give you the time of day?

This guy sells snakes.......
Bill | 5:00 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Just because Romney is Mormon, he can't win? What is next? Already shootings at LDS churches, distruction to church property, and other things that don't get into the papers. Sounds like the 1800's all over again.
ROMnope | 5:02 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Hi Lucille:
Montana hasn't happened yet. And to answer your question about why the news media is SO NEGATIVE toward Romney? It's because he's a phony. Does that help?
Anonymous | 5:08 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Interesting that there are not many postings on this. (wink)
russ | 5:16 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt is making the right move by shifting his money to Michigan. He has to, absolutely has to, have Michigan. And McCain can smell a strike out in Michigan. Mitt has to have Michigan. McCain can lose, but Mitt can't.

I do not know what the polls show. But Mitt is a local boy, ok rich local boy, with a famous name, has oddles of money, and looks good in a blue sweater! Probably has a lot of business buddies...Yee gads... what is there to worry about?

Oh, McCain. McCain is the Sal Maglie of politics. (for you old baseball afficiandos I threw that in) He will throw hard and inside, he will brush Mitt back, he will knock him down and declare innocence, he will look innocent at all times... in short he is a pro at this. So Mitt should be worried. McCain will call in the military veterans, the old GOP guard, the dyed in the wool repubs. The country clubbers. Mitt should be worried sick.

Don't be surprised if Mitt suddenly declares that McCain threw one inside and close to the chin. That was why Sal Maglie was called ---- "the barber." Good luck Mitt.
An Australian Observer | 5:18 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Romney is clearly the most electable of the Republican candidates.
Your country might cease to be the laughing stock of the world if he was President.
The evangelical anti-mormon hate machine will run out of money before Romney does.
Justin | 5:19 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Its sad that Utahan's are seeing this as Romney's a mormon he can't win. Personally I see it is Romney's a flip-flopper he can't win
Mitt Can Win | 5:24 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
First, i'm not Mormon and my support for him has nothing to do with religion. I support Mitt due to his position on the issues. It is refreshing to hear actual positions. McCain hides in the closet on illegal immigration and others simply cannot stake out specific positions.

Obama..does anybody know what his positions are, other than "Change." I simply can't believe that a candidate will go this far because he's a nice guy.

I wish that the talk radio people will run the next debate. We cannot allow a candidate to simply stroll down the path without tough questions..unbelievable.
deserves better | 5:55 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I view Romney the same way I do Bill Clinton.
Both have some degree of charisma, a relaxed temperament, nice smile.
While one was a philanderer
The other is a panderer.

America deserves better than that.
Vivian | 6:01 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I think Romney would make an excellent Pres. He has no baggage to carry around like many of the others. He is running a clean campaign. He does not rant & rave over the media. I would vote for Romney!!!
Bob | 6:08 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt is a doer..not a breather.
Anonymous | 6:17 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I like the Romney but the country seems almost ready to elect a woman, almost ready to elect an African American but a Mormon...

And one last thing, this is a good wake-up call for Mormons living in Utah, the REDDEST of all the states, to truly find out how intolerant the Republican Party is.
Lucille again: | 6:24 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
To ROMnope: No, because it is untrue.

I concede that I stated the wrong state....He won in
Wyoming, instead of Montana....but the idea remains the same...he did win a state.

Is this what is called "flip flopping?"
If it is, I will take a flip flopper that has the talents, record and integrity of Mitt.
With an uncontested background like his, NO ONE can call him a phony.

I agree with "An Australian Observer"
Mitt has my vote | 6:28 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt carries no scandles behind him; believes and follows fidelity in his marrige; has strong family values; does not participate in personal attacks for political gain; his so called negative ads are merely a comparison of FACTS nothing more; he has a proven track record of running large organizations; is fically responsible; has strong immigration policy views and the list goes on.

He's go my vote. I've done my research deeper than what the media calls his "flip-flopping"

Yet their are many who prefer to distance themselves because he has moral character and follows a faith that strives to teach nothing but good.
Re Mitt has my vote | 6:34 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Go back to IOWA he was personally attacking Huckabee consistently
Patty | 6:41 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Why don't you Mormon haters just leave Utah and then you won't have to put up with living and breathing and reading about them. You need to get a life.

McCain is an angry old liberal man who will diffentely not win the nomination. Huchabee wants you to think he is this angel but really a devil in disquise and also a liberal. I for one... am done with the Republican Party if this is all we have to offer. I will not be voting in the general election for anyone other then Romney.

Let's see.....hom many electoral votes does Romeny have??????? More than the others!!! Don't count him out just yet.

GOOOOOOOO Mitt
Tai H. | 7:00 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt Romney has nothing to do with Mormonism.

People hate his politics because he is a liberal and because he is dishonest.

Leave the Church out of it. There are some Mormons, like myself, who simply find Mitt Romney to be too liberal.

I will vote for Mike Huckabee because I am a Bruce R. McConkie Mormon and a Barry Morris Goldwater Republican.
He's a looser! | 7:03 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Americans have tried a president who avoided military service, who lied and was born with a silver spoon. Mitt, knows nothing about the military. He can't relate to workers and he's out of touch with the middle class.

Do The Math | 7:08 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt currently has the lead in Delagates 28, Huck 24, and McCain 10. Seems he's doing fine to me.
Who else?? | 7:10 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Lets just be honest!!! Mitts a Mormon, meaning he's got god on his side, leading him on how to run HIS & our country. What other Candidates have that personal revelation & leadership on there side??? It's been a long time in the making but it's here :)!!!
Do The Math | 7:12 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Sorry I did my Math wrong. Mitt has 24, Huck 18, and McCain has 10 delagates. Like I said before, he has the lead. Why all the fuss. If it ended today he'd win. Why is everyone talking about McCain's momentum.
Nichol Draper | 7:31 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Mitt has already picked up 29 delegates and will easily win Utah. He is going to be a power broker with his delegates and will either set himself up for another run in 4 or 8 years or even become the vice president running mate. John McCain did little better in 2000 and may not win this time and only has 7 delegates to date. It's funny how critical people are of someone who is rich and powerful. I guess it pacifies their little egos.
Romney forever | 7:33 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Romney good, everyone else very, very bad.
Interesting | 7:37 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Years ago Ronald Regan was a Democrat. Today he would be considered a flip flopper. When he ran the first time for the Republican nomination he was defeated. I remember he gave one of the greatest speaches I've ever heard conceeding defeat. Today someone else is considered a flip flopper. He may not win the nomination. We as a country would rather have some one with no morals. Someone who was on drugs. Someone who is intollerant. I remember hearing once that an educated vote can be nullified by an idiot. I hope we as a country will be able to look at what direction this country needs to go in and than analize the nominees to see which one can get us there. Our petty differences short circuit the process before it even begins.
May we find the best nominee or we will be left with something other than the best.
Wiley E. Coyote | 7:54 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
People, people, people, ignore the invective-spouting Mormon haters. Keep the faith and continue to write encouraging words to Mitt. It doesn't matter how many good arguments you offer in Mitt's behalf, you will not change minds that are like concrete--all mixed up and permanently set. Don't waste your time trying to change a single one, you just won't be able to. Be positive in everything you write. Mitt knows who he is and what he is capable of. He has the money and the courage to see this through. Though his detractors tell the same distortions of the truth over and over and convince themselves they are true, they are still, nevertheless, distortions of the truth. Goebbels, the Nazi propaganda minister, was an expert in the use of this strategy in WWII--that is, tell a lie long enough and often enough and people will begin to believe it. Go, Mitt. Don't falter now, you've come too far.
sad for LDS | 7:55 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I feel sad for my LDS co-workers who thought Mitt Romney would finally lead to a change in attitude towards Mormons. Unfortunately, Mitt is such a shameless flip-flopper, so completely untrustworthy, he's like a caricature of the phony-baloney salesman and reinforces every anti-Mormon stereotype.

There has to be a better, more genuine LDS to run from president. Romney should drop out after Michigan and go back to selling.
Romney's My Man | 8:02 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I find it so refreshing to have a candidate like Mitt running. His record of admin speaks for itself and admin is 99% of being President.
Southern Supporter | 8:07 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
It is thought by many people not from the South that because we talk slow, we think slow. NOT SO! In 1976 the Republican party chose "safe", "loyal"
candidate in Gerald Ford. North Carolina chose Ronald Reagan. Ford like McCain and Huckabee was a bit too liberal and the people put in a "Populist" Jimmy Carter. This was the worst man to ever hold the office of President.

In 1980 and 1984 Ronald Reagan was the best candidate and he won. In 1988 George H.W. Bush was a weak candidate and he won. The next elections were lost the Ross Perot/Bill Clinton confederation.

In 2000 and 2004 George W. Bush was the best candidate and he has been a great President. Now we have several choices, some are liberal, some quasiliberal, some media darlings, and one accomplished, bright, good, decent conservative man.

Watch SC give Mitt a win or at least a second because he is simply the best candidate on either side. May God bless America with a leader, "Mitt Romney".
bless America with a leader | 8:24 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
And Give UP this God did this and God did not do that. MEN AND WOMAN do it, NOT GOD.
Sometimes it sounds like we are voting for GOd not a President of the USA
Joyce | 8:37 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
All I can say to the negative statements.....sour grapes, hateful and nasty. McCain is too old and stuck in his ways to be a President. I would be hardpushed to vote for any of the others. Mitt is the man for the job, make no mistake
Looking for Answers | 8:41 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Will someone please give me some real evidence that:
1. Mitt Romney sell snakes. Such a business operation does not appear on his bio.
2. Mitt Romney deserves to be called a flip-flopper. Only the arrogant and the foolish refuse to change their minds after gaining more information.
3. There is something wrong with coming in second in a rather large field of candidates. Most states do not require all their delegates to vote for #1 at the convention.
4. The early primaries determine the party candidate.
5. Intellectuals read the Deseret News and provide valuable comment on published articles.
suzyk | 8:44 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
To "sad for LDS". Give him the benefit of the doubt...do you know him personally? Or are you being led by the hateful namecallers? Shame on you..you've never changed your mind huh? Mitt Romney is a man of integrity. He is running for President because he loves the United States of America. He is not interested in the hooplah the others are. He is a professional businessman, experienced in finances and reorganization. He certainly has the knowledge and desire to be a good President. His religion has nothing to do with it. He does not slam the others for their religiouos beliefs or have you even noticed. They have not afforded him the same professional courtesy. We are proud to support a man of his caliber..he would make a great President and would work very hard not seeking for his own selfish gain like Hillary and Billary. Our country would be well served with Mitt Romney as the President.
Asstute Observer | 8:49 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
Asstute, Mitt earned his millions by lots of savvy and hard work. Judging from the content of your comments, I don't think you would understand that or much of anything else.
dcc | 9:01 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
It is not his LDS background but his flip-flop on major conservative issues. And his tendency to exaggerate his background and experience (my favorite is the 'hunter all his life'. What a stupid thing to lie about.) People who don't care about his religion can't get back those.

He played to the ultra-fundamentalists. They do not like the LDS faith. He can never get those people back from Huckabee.

Keep in mind that the great 'Varmint hunter' is representing the LDS church on a national level. Missionaries can never match that.
sad for LDS | 9:27 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
to suzyk:

I live in Massachusetts, I know all too well how phony Mitt Romney is. And our neighbors in New Hampshire know it too.

Or do you like Mitt only because he's LDS?
I like him | 9:44 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I like a man that can change his mind if he is wrong, instead of holding on to wrong ideas in spite of everything around him. If he held onto faulty ideas you then say he is too proud to change. Finding fault is easy. Here is another one. Imagine this one. He had TV spots running in the south and now has decided not to run them there. Good gracious. The nerve. He should be expelled. I say get it right. If you want to vote for Huckabee or McCain, change your mind. Vote for Mitt instead. Sure it's a flip-flop. but it's a better decision.
Bishop Rick | 10:05 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I doubt that sad for LDS lives in MA. Mitt is not a phony. His record does not demonstrate a shred of phoniness.

Look folks, I think the LDS church is based on lies and story telling, but I still think Mitt is the best candidate for the job. I was against him at first and bought into the flip flopping nonsense, but the truth is, he used to support abortion, realized he was wrong and changed his stance. Admitting a mistake is not flip flopping. A flip flopper changes his tune depending on the audience. Mitt has not done that.

If you can watch a replay of the forum done by Fox News last Sunday with the top 5 candidates, you will be impressed with Mitt. That forum alone changed my views and he now has my vote.

Keep religion out of this. Religion was not a factor in MA where Mitt did a great job. Anyone that really lives there should know that.
Reason | 10:32 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
I think it to be hypocritical to say "keep religion out of it" when thats all the media keep bringing up. Same holds true to biggoted Huck.
rick | 10:33 p.m. Jan. 9, 2008
the way i see it is pretty simple. we could have a president who gets teary eyed over a tough day of campaining. I would hate to see her in a real world crisis situation. secondly we have a fellow who declares CHANGE I don't know what kind of change he would like to see, i think he is still unsure. or their is the same old McCain too much like the present situation in the White House. I don't know if he has any new ideas to pull this country out of the mess it is in. Now then there is Huckabee, nice enough fellow on the surface. unfortunately the good christians of the country put Bush in office and arrogance and attacks on our personal feedoms has been the norm. He doesn't care what the american people or the world says. I don't know if that was a good call. Hey as far as I concerned i think that with the country in financial problems we need someone with a little sauvy to straighten it out without raising our taxes. Mitt is my vote.
