This reporter seemed a bit disrespectful to Sloan. Well, losing 12 out of 17 doesn't really warrant respect. Sloan isn't running a basketball team, hes running a charity for NBA players that need someone to understand when their life isn't going so well :'(. Boo Hoo. You know, sometimes its legit, but Sloan opens himself up to guys taking days off without true need. He's being taken advantage of and its hurting the chemistry.
Bitty Burton | 6:02 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sloan Needs to go! He doesn't relate to the players of this day.
Kohn E Henroid | 6:16 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Is Sloan try to tell Boozer, "I didn't bail out on you then, don't bail on me now."?

If Miller does't get rid of Sloan, no more LH Miller automobilles for us.

I won't buy another ticket till Sloan is gone. I'm sick of his foul mouth. And don't think I can't read his lips on the T.V.
frustrated | 6:37 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
hey tim why don't you ask him why he did not call a time out or why is your defensive style not working?
why does the player seem not to want to play for you?
or even, why carlose, are you not playing defense? those are the question fans like me want answers to. and the grand finale of them all is do you think the game has passed you and need to hand the torch to some else?

winds of change | 6:37 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Its time for a change. I think Sloan should step down. Seriously, what's the difference between this team and last years team? We found a couple of 2's that can score. Our center is still missing in action, Kirilenko is playing better, and Boozer and Williams are a year wiser. I think its Sloan that is killing us. He came up with a game plan 20 years ago and hasn't changed it one bit since. Let me tell you what is going to happen tonight. Williams will exit the game with 3 minutes left in the first quarter. Hart will enter and play into the second quarter. Harpring will get 17 minutes of playing time. Collins (heaven help us) will get 12 minutes.... Every team in the league has this figured out. We play the same game against every opponent. I would like to see some real "coaching" for once. And I don't mean just yelling at your players.
BWT | 7:15 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sloan ball will prevail and the Jazz will win 54 games, just as I predicted before the season started. The Jazz will go far in the playoffs and the reason for this, because the players will start to play under the Jazz system, Which is team ball.
Go Jazz!
Dennis Rodman | 7:27 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Please buy my season tickets!! No more 8K for tickets as long as Sloan is there. If he cant do it in 20, how can he get it done in 21 or 22?
Anonymous | 7:28 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
WHY SHOULD SLOAN STEP DOWN? HE'S REBUILD THIS TEAM TO FIT HIS SYSTEM. WE DONT WANT A NEW COACH JUST FOR THE SAKE OF HAVING A NEW COACH. LOOK AT THE CHARGERS!
Frustrated w/ Sloan Bashers | 7:35 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Thank you BWT.

I'm so tired of hearing about all you "fans" wanting Sloan gone. You proabably never bought a season ticket or a car from LHM in the first place.

Doug | 7:46 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sloan reminds me of a boastful chef who can only make omelets.(But he's good at breaking eggs.)
AZ Ute | 7:47 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Jerry- Let me get his straight, you say, "I've never believed in lighting fires under anybody." If you truly believe this, you should get out of coaching. One of the most important jobs you have is to motivate players. Even you, in the past have admitted the season is long and it is sometimes hard for players to get up for games. I'm shocked you can't see the need to motivate your team, even though you admit it is young. So basically, even though their young and the season is long, you will assume no responsibility to motivate this team. Man, that is pathetic. It is time to step down.
sdd | 7:59 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
the jazz are not going to start winning games until our star boozer steps up and decides he needs to play a little defense and run the floor on both ends. This might inspire a few of the other guys to play a little harder as well, and before you know it maybe we build some chemistry and everybody is helping everybody, and we start winning a few games.. Sorry boozer but you need to pick it up...
frustrated with sloan lovers | 8:08 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
hey BWT are you watching the same jazz team that i am watching. This team is no good. Jerry sloans time is up. I think a change could do this franchise some good. This team isn't even going to make the playoffs.
Merle Ogdom | 8:09 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
This is a joke Sloan needs to go now! No time-outs on a 17-2 run, substituting to a pre made schedule(Its almost the same schedule that Stockton and Rudd had 20 years ago), Trying to play the same way they played twenty years ago when we now have totally different types of players on the floor(Sloan Mark Eaton is not still waiting in the paint when somebody beats their man). Also, now we have some shooters but no plays or screens are being run for them.
Deeanne Squeeler | 8:11 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sloan is past his prime. We need a new man to handle this job.
Johnny Boy | 8:17 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Miller you need to open your eyes and see whats going on. Put on your glasses if you need to.
KEY LOCK | 8:18 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
BWT Do you actually believe that? Really,do you actually believe that? Have you done the math? Do you want to bet on it?
ugh | 8:33 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
AZ Ute- You beat me to it. My sentiments exactly.
This is basically a case where the emperor has no clothes and no one has the guts to admit it.
Team Player | 8:36 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Isn't the Jazz's current coach, Jerry Sloan, the same coach they had last year? Other than Jerry's efforts to be more positive to help motivate Kirilenko better this year, has he changed drastically from last year? Has Sloan changed in some way that is causing the Jazz play to disintegrate in the fourth quarters of this years games, instead of them coming back from huge deficits to win in the fourth quarter like they did many times last year? Is Sloan making Okur miss all his 3 pointers this year? Did he somehow make Okur hit all those last second 3's last year? Use some logic people! The Jazz have 9 out of 12 of the same players as last year, and the same coaching staff. So how change in success be the coaches' fault? The Jazz are playing less hungry on defence, Memo's declined dramatically, and our players desperately miss Fisher's leadership both on and off the court. That's why they're stinking things up so bad!
Led Zeppelin | 8:40 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Lets not join the NBA trend of coach firing! It's not ALL Sloan anyway! Do you know anything about basketball people? I don't know if Boozer will ever play defense. Why do you think Sloan gives Jarron Collins so many minutes? Could it be because he defends? Jazz defense is horrible and all Sloan is doing is complaining how bad the defense is and trying to fix it.
Jazz Fan | 8:45 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
I love Sloan. He is a very good coach that teaches a team hard work and dedication.
Anonymous | 8:52 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Attn Bozo's who know nothing about basketball, which includes anyone who has posted anti Sloan remarks. He has rebuilt this team faster than anyone thought he could. These players are young and frankly not that good. What he and the GM have done is genius. Sloan deserves praise for having these young guys where they are now. Not armchair babies crying cause he hurts someones feelings. Sloan is a great coach and is hamstrung by his own success and morons who don't understand basketball.
Anonymous | 8:53 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Jazz was 13-5 (Road record was 5-4 at this time)before Sloan got the extension contract, and it was 5-12 after Sloan got the extension contract. Conspiracy, players purposely play bad because they don't want to see Sloan for another year, or Sloan now feel secure with another year of contract and tried to implement the old way of coaching, not as much flexible as the begining of the year. Hey Sloan, your coaching method is old and not suitable for mordern rules.
Anonymous | 8:56 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
I guess every coach in the NBA says Jerry's name when asked who the best coaches in the league are. Jerry is the Jazz... if you don't like it, go cheer for the Celtics.
Anonymous | 9:03 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
sloan couldn't coach a d-league team to play-off how in the world is he going to do it in the nba. duh people!
love is blind | 9:08 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
To all of the sloan lovers-
Besides name calling, can you make an argument for sloan explaining why:
*After his extension, the play has deteriorated
*He refuses to call time out when teams make a run
*He plays players (boozer) when they are 2/13
*Trades first rounds pics for players who subsequently get few minutes.
*He admits his job is not to motivate players.
Anonymous | 9:09 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
everybody just shut up, none of you know anything about the game of basketball and have no idea what your talking about your just saying something for the sake of talking. Please be quiet and let sloan, one of the most winningest coachs in NBA history, do his job
Jay Cee | 9:10 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
utah fans are the most fickle. we have enjoyed more prosperity than most of the teams in the NBA have EVER known. 2 seasons out of the playoffs in what the last 25 years? i want it just as bad as you, but lets realize a couple things:
a) the league is full of really good teams
b) we need to dump a few players to finish this thing
c) our team is YOUNG! and we lack veteran leadership

that being said, we have one of the best young rosters out there. we are just missing a key ingredient - and thats NOT a new coach.

stay fickle. i'll see you all back on the bandwagon.
d-leage | 9:24 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
no i don't think he could coach the d-league team to the playoffs...

he only coached an NBA team to 20 straight playoffs and 2 NBA finals, then led the youngest and most inexperienced team in years to the Western Conference Finals...

but he couldn't coach a d-league team to the playoffs...
Typical | 9:32 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
I cant wait to see all the posts of how great Sloan is when the jazz go on a 10 and 2 run or something. People they are having a tough time because they are playing hot teams. Portland, Bos and others in a brutal stretch. Now we have some home games if we struggle going into the break then someting really is wrong.
lakerfan | 9:35 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
i vote to keep sloan around so we can continue to beat the jazz up. lol!

can't teach and old dog a new trick. can't trade an old john deer for a new one either.
0-20 | 9:38 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
What you sloan apologists don't realize is that his history is just that- history.
The game has changed yet sloan's coaching hasn't.
Anonymous | 9:43 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
the reason why he can't coach them to the d-league playoff is because there are no hall of famer on the team. duh! name one team with 2 hall of famer, in their prime, to not win a championship. duh! 20 years of nothing and 2 time 2nd place , you must be satified continue with saaaalone.
To AZ Ute | 9:46 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sorry, but this is professional basketball, not college ball. At this level, it is up to the players to motivate themselves and the coaches to employ a system that benefits the team most. Their paycheck should be the motivation. No one ever said Phil Jackson, Pat Riley, Don Nelson (most overrated coach in NBA history)and Lenny Wilkens were great motivators, it was their system.
Replacement? | 9:51 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
I always hear fans say, we need to get rid of Sloan, and we need a defensive center for example. Please name your replacements now......and don't say Dwight Howard, so somebody unreasonable.

Fire away....who's your coach tomorrow if you fire Sloan today?

Anonymous | 9:54 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
9:46-
So what is up with Sloan's system then if he is so great?
re: az ute | 9:56 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
you must be in the sun to long. phil jackson and pat riley don't motivate? i guess they didn't win championships either, get real. and please, realize that they are far more superior in their abillity to coach then jerry will ever will be.
Isiah Thomas | 9:58 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
If you guys hate a coach like Sloan as bad as you do, I'm glad that I'm in New York. Sloan's getting more heat than I am. He built up the team, and I tore a team down.
By the way, if you all hate sloan so much name someone you honestly think would do a better job (and no just because you are good at NBA live doesn't qualify you to coach in the NBA).
CCJAZZ | 10:01 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
To all those who won't buy anything from LHM until he fires Sloan go ahead especially if that means I won't have to see your fair weather faces at the games!! I dont want to be in the same arena as you anyway!! And the comment about Sloan's language you make me laugh! I don't approve of foul language either, it bothers me as much as anyone, but to avoid it you just better avoid all professional sports. Lock yourself in your happy valley home turn off the tv and ignore the rest of the world. As much as I hate foul language I have yet to find a workplace where it doesn't exist you just have to learn to ignore the bad!!!
Palebear | 10:01 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
From Sloan's point of view, he shouldn't have to light a fire under his players because they should be motivated enough to do it themselves. The coach isn't supposed to be a babysitter. They are paid to work.

People complain about Sloan's system. Seems to me that if all the players would go out and execute his system instead of trying it their own way that it would work. He preaches defense first. Read the article last week about how the 3 big stars of the Celtics have worked well together because Doc Rivers preached defense to them and they bought into it.

Is Sloan's system flawed? Use the scientific approachexperiment. Have all the players actually execute his game plan to the best of their abilities and then see if they win games or not. If they do it and it doesn't work, the system is bad. If it works, we quit complaining because their in the playoffs again.

Personally, I thought it was refreshing to see a side of Sloan that shows he cares about these guys and won't play them hurt. Normally we just hear him railing on them in the press.
sloan haters crazy | 10:09 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
basketball isn't brain surgery hard work pays off!! I was taught listen to the coach and but his system success comes from accepting your coach know what he's talking about. Based on the record I would say Sloan knows what he is talking about. NBA is still the NBA it's not and1 yet. Team ball is the way to play. Go Jazz!!!!!!!!!
Re: TO AZ Ute | 10:13 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Phil Jackson, Pat Riley and Lenny Wilkens were all great motivators. Don Nelson is one of the best motivators of all time.
CCJAZZ | 10:15 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Hey anonymous at 9:54-
the problem with Sloan's system is that the players are not buying into it. His system took them to the W. C. Finals last year. An example of players not buying the system: When was the last time you saw Boozer post someone up or roll hard to the basket after a pick. He is not right now he settles for free-throw line extended jump shots. (not all booz fault he lost confidence in teammates outside shooting to open up the floor). The results 6 points on 3-16 shooting. Last year (and the first of this year) he went hard to the basket and finished. No team defense (sloans system). Need more examples? There are plenty!!
Sloan-ed | 10:18 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
The problem isn't that Sloan can't coach or implement a good system, the problem is he has lost control of this team. They are not motivated to play for him. I've been on teams where the coach loses control of the team. This is what happens: losing. In professional sports, change is a good thing. LHM will never do that though... BTW, I think the two things that frustrate fans about Sloan are his philosophy on defense and his inability to manage a game situation. His offensive system is brilliant, but look at the stats, the teams with the best records this year also fire up the most 3s. There are more shooters in the league now, who have made their careers on making wide-open 3s. Unfortunately, that's what Sloan is convinced to give every team. Watch the team tonight. They look lost on defense... Also, call a timeout once in awhile, or take a guy out when he can't make a shot. Go with the hot hand. These are all the anti-Sloan... As for a replacement coach, how about Jeff Hornacek?
Anonymous | 10:19 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
CCJazz-

You are just another example of sloan lovers not being able to defend his practices. Instead, you make personal attacks on his critics.
Way to go.
Anonymous | 10:20 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
Sloan system equals no championship. Leave the three-point line open, and not encourage his players to shoot at the three-point line even if they are wide open. Two years of no Jordan 93 and 94, Houston destroyed the jazz at the three-point line while Hornacek complained that no plays run for him.
Anonymous | 10:19 a.m. Jan. 8, 2008
What does Sloan really do anyways? He has a set system, and hardly ever deviates from it. He doesn't call timeouts, he doesn't make adjustments, he doesn't motivate...he calls the same plays over and over like a broken record regardless of success or failure.

Do we really need to pay him money to do the same job a robot could perform? Maybe they could make a cardboard cutout of Sloan, and have a little speaker on it with a timed recording of substitutions, laced with random profanity, calling the same plays.

But, we would have to pick out one guy on the team to criticize, and just throw random negative comments on the recording throughout the game, or it wouldn't quite be the same.

Larry, you could save some money dude!
