Opponents' 'terrific' hits give Romney an opening

I seriously doubt that McCain's smirking will damage his chances. Remember the last election. All Bush did was smirk at Kerry and call him names. He kept up at it long enough that Kerry lost his cool and came out looking like a whiny baby rather than a presidential candidate. Romney has withstood the attacks very well so far but if he slips up and goes on the defensive, he's toast.

Of course, I doubt that it will matter anyway because there's no way that Romney will get the republican bid regardless of what McCain says. The Mormon issue will be his downfall, no matter what he says or does.

Mitt is not going to win the nomination, he is not qualified for office, money can't buy every thing and there is not enough LDS vote to put him over the top.
No Republican can win the presidency this time around no matter who the Democrats nominate. This country has been in the grips of the worst President and the most horrid Vice President for 7 years and we can't wait to see the backside of them. I voted republican last time and I can assure you myself and a few million more voters won't make the same mistake again.

From the debate I saw last night ( I only saw part of it) I thought Romney was wrong to attack others ideas. Huckabee stayed out of the fights and focued on the issues, I appreciated that. I really don't see the need for anybody to slam other opponents, just state your plan and move on. That being said, I will read up more on Romney and Huckabee and make a decision based on their policies.

SINCE WE ARE ALL YELLING NOW, LET ME SAY THIS:

Mitt Romney is a liberal, just like his father, and he will lose the nomination.

Mitt Romney is not welcome in the Party of Reagan!

Bobbi, are you kidding! You obvioulsy dont' know anything about the Romney's. Mitt talks about his wife all the time. He adores her and has since he was 19 when he first laid eyes on her!

"Party of Reagan?"
Now that's what I call progress.
Memo to Mormons for Huck | 1:46 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Liberals don't cut taxes, decrease spending, and require illegals to come into the country...legally!

You may want to intelligently study Hucksters record again. And when he claims as a matter of foreign diplomacy to have visited Israel 9 times, please tell him bible tours don't count.
Hee, hee | 1:49 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Some benighted soul said "Mitt Romney is not welcome in the Party of Reagan!" I seem to remember that the party of Reagan was grown by inviting a lot of different kinds of people. Now that party is intent on purging the impure. I'm pretty sure Reagan wouldn't be comfortable there.

As a person who's sympathetic to the other party, let me say how much I'm enjoying this. Thanks for the entertainment. See you in November.

Liberalism is gaining strength (since we all are liberal by nature) and conservatives are being exposed for the fascists they are.
You will soon see that inspite of Rush Limbaugh and the crazy far-righters, America is wonderfully liberal.
As God intended it.
Re: John McCain | 2:05 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
One contributor referred to John McCain as a "dour old curmudgeon." He comes across to me, not as the Mr. Nice Guy he tries so hard to portray, but rather as Mr. Goody Two-Shoes who is trying too hard. Sometime he is unable to disguise his true nature; i.e. the childish, immature Saturday and Sunday night Republican candidates forum attacks on Mitt Romney, that of a "dour old curmudgeon" whose time is past.
No, you liberals are wrong | 2:27 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Mitt Romney raised the capital gains tax, because he was a liberal governor.

Mitt Romney legislated gay civil unions, because he was a liberal governor.

Mitt Romney funded the "Governor's commission on gay youth", because he was a liberal governor.

Mitt Romney administered the most corrupt scandal in the history of the Winter Olympics, because he is an immoral person.

Keep Mitt Romney in Boston. He isn't the man Reagan was. He is the worst candidate I have ever seen.

Mike Huckabee is America's hope. If not Mike, than certainly Fred Thompson.

America had 12 years of Carter and Clinton. We cannot go back. We cannot elect another liberal and we will not go back.

No to John McCain.

No to Mitt Romney.

No to Rudy Giuliani.

It's already speculated that after Mike Huckabee wins the nomination, he will ask JC Watts to join the ticket.

I am partial to the Republican party, but certainly want the best candidate to become president. In my opinion, at this point in time, I can only see Romney, Guiliani, and possibly Obama as the type of candidates who can lead this country and garner respect in the global arena. Can you really see Huckabee, McCain or Clinton representing us in a Middle East summit?

As I watched the debates Saturday night, I was disgusted while watching the Republicans. What a bunch of whiny children. Politicians continually bashing their opponents, smirking and laughing and making snide remarks is nothing but a turn-off. Nothing about them impressed me- NOTHING.

I'm not saying that the Democrats don't do it either (I am neither Democrat nor Republican, but I do know who has my vote this coming election), but my point being specifically that Saturday night's Republicans should be ashamed of themselves because they looked like a bunch of fools.

Lord help us if one of those people ends up being the "leader" of our country.
Neil | 3:07 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Re Huckabee/Watts how ridiculous can you get. Huckabee would lose by a landside. He can't seperate religion and politics. His entire support is from right wing christians. While I don't support the gay lifestyle it is obvious you are a hate monger.
Political Primer | 3:14 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
If a politician voted in favor of a 3-cent increase in the sales tax or signed it into law as a governor and I as his opponent mention that fact, that IS NOT an attack. It is a statement of fact. It is a comparison. An attack is: "He's a Mormon and believes crazy things! He'll force his Mormonism upon us!" (i.e. based on bigotry, uninformed supposition, intentional falsehood, and not fact). "Mitt says he is Pro-Life but used to be pro-choice" is not an attack. It is a statement that Mitt himself will agree is factual. "Huckabee let 1000+ criminals out of jail." is a fact. "Huckabee let 1000+ criminals out of jail because he was paid off." is an attack and negative because that is simply not true. The nature of pursuing a political office includes pointing out the differences between yourself and your opponent. It only becomes an attack when it strays from the facts or is an intentional attempt to falsely impugn the character of your opponent. Also, accusing your opponent of attacking you when they have simply stated your record, IS IN ITSELF A NEGATIVE ATTACK.

All Huckabee is is an unqualified likable person. Is is an ordained minister, so should we feel like the SBC will run his presidency? We should pick the most qualified person, not the most charismatic or likable.
RE: Huckabee/Watts | 4:10 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
CORRECTION: Mitt Romney came into the SLC Olympics AFTER the scandal and saved the olympics; He did not administer the scandal, as you claim (a well-known fact by the way), which unfortunately brings into question every other claim you made.

The so-called "Governor's Commission on Gay youth" was created by Gov Weld in 1992. Mitt threatened to defund this commission in 2006, when an attempt was made to promote the lifestyle and Romney spokesman Eric Fehrnstrom stated "We're directing the commission not to use taxpayer money for parades and parties and to refocus their resources on counseling and the development of strategies for the prevention of violence and suicide. That is in keeping with the original mission of the commission." You attempt to make Mitt pro-homosexual rights, which he is not.

Kerry Healey, Lt. Governor under Romney, announced she was in favor of civil unions, which according to the press "puts her to the left of Romney, who opposes both same-sex marriage and civil unions."

So, H/W, you are 3 for 3 for either intentionally misleading or perpetuating someone else's attempt at the same. This stuff is not hard to refute. With all due respect, your credibility is shot.
Working on Sundays??? | 4:17 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Whats all this working on Sundays thing?? Every LDS knows that if you are rich and popular working on Sundays is ok. BUT if you are poor and offered overtime on Sunday you are a sinner!! Anyway working on Sunday is not an issue with Mr Mitt, surely supporting abortions and getting a Temple recommend is.................... Hmmm, I forgot, he is rich and popular!!!
Mike Huckabee | 4:30 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
I have a hard time thinking that people who do some research still actually support Mike Huckabee. He's known to be dishonest, and had numerous ethics violations while in office. Huckabee is not a viable candidate.

Are Mormon conditioned to worship the rich?
RE: Huckabee/Watts | 4:40 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Two Dry Mormons? You have to be joking. Huckabee is the president (or was) of the Southern Baptist Convention who is blatantly anti-Mormon.

The SBC descended on SLC in 1998 distributing "a video called The Mormon Puzzle and distributed copies of it with a book titled Mormonism Unmasked. Both works promised to 'lift the veil from one of the greatest deceptions in the history of religion,' a blurb on the book's cover announced." (SLATE)

With all due respect, you need to do your homework. Why would you vote for someone who so actively attempts to tear down and fight against what I assume you believe in? And doesn't it bother you when Huckabee claimed "I don't know that much about Mormonism" when he has claimed to know EVERYTHING about it? He is no friend of the church, dry or otherwise.
Pro-choice Mormon | 5:29 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
It's called free agency for a reason! The government should not take away ANY women's free agency, her right to choose what is best for her. That said, I believe the woman already made her choice when she had sex (unless of course she was raped) and that she should accept the consequences of her decision, which may include becoming pregnant. I could never have an abortion as I believe that life begins at conception and that abortion is murder. However, I do believe that the government has no business telling a woman what she can and can't do with her body. The hardest part for me is the question "Doesn't the unborn child get a choice?" Unfortunately, they cannot speak to defend themselves and that breaks my heart. When it comes down to it, I have no right to make that choice for another woman and neither does the government. Do I still believe it's wrong? Absolutely, but it's her choice.
not mitt | 5:34 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Sorry, no chance for Mitt. He'll have to wait for another day to save the country when the constitution is dangling by a thread. I think it's funny how all of you want a "businessman" as the president because he will be more honest, etc. I guess no one here has ever been screwed by corporate America or remebers Enron or any of the other "businessman fiascos". Admit it...most of you support Romney becuase he is a mormon. You are probably the same people that slam Obama (not that I support him) and claim he is a Muslim. Why should anyone care about that but not about Romney being a mormon? As usual, the racists in Utah won't support one person because of their supposed religion but cringe when Romney is questioned about his belief in fairy tales.

A RINO spoiler who cannot be elected. I have looked at a list of all of the former presidents, and not one could have been mistaken for a cartoon character.

"The way the Republican Party's going, [Huckabee's rise] is not a surprise, People can't see past his pastoral charm to realize he's a big-government liberal. He sees big government as a fix for everything. If that's what Republican voters get stuck with, it's their own fault. It's an unfortunate situation."

No, you liberals are STILL wrong | 5:35 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
The statement that the press put Dr. Healey to the left of Romney, who opposes same-sex marriage and civil unions is rather vague in merit. It was, in fact, the Boston Herald that labeled Mitt Romney as a flip-flopper who ran to the left of Ted Kennedy in 1994. If you recall, Romney promised to be more effective on gay rights in the Senate than Ted Kennedy. To the right of Healey but to the left of Kennedy - pick your poison.

Mitt Romney backed a state constitutional amendment in February 2004 that allowed gay civil unions, contrary to the LDS Church Handbook of Instructions. Yes, thats what I call an anti-Mormon. In May 2004, Romney instructed town clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

Lets talk about the Olympics that you claim Mitt Romney saved. Mitt Romney banned the Boy Scouts of America from participating in the games as he claimed bigotry in the leadership ban on homosexuals. Hmmm that sure sounds like pro-homosexual rights leader to me.

Talk all you want about intentionally misleading. The facts say that Mitt Romney was and is a liberal politician. He is not welcome in the Party of Reagan/Huckabee.
GrandpaJ | 5:36 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Simply stated, Romney has a record of success from rescuing/resuscitating failing businesses to turning the deeply troubled Olympics to a great success to making great progress in a heavily democratic state as a minority governor. He has the intelligence, character, leadership skills and understanding of how to get things done that will serve this country well as president. As viable republican options against the democrat's candidate, whoever that is, only Romney or Guliani have a chance. I'll choose Romney!

Hillary all of the Way | 5:40 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
All of you conservatives need to realize there is no conservative running in either party.

Think about Hillary for a sec. here.

Hillary keeps talking about her 35 years as an agent for change. However, she's only been in the Senate for seven years. The other 28 years is simply Hillary taking credit for her husband's experience as governor and president. Hillary wants the nation to buy into the notion that by virtue of her nuptials to Bill, she's every bit as experienced as Bill. Experience by osmosis, I guess.

Oh, and in un-related news, this just in...

"In a news conference Deanna Favre announced she will be the starting QB for the Packers this coming Sunday. Deanna asserts that she is qualified to be starting QB because she has spent the past 16 years married to Brett while he played QB for the Packers. During this period of time she became familiar with the definition of a corner blitz, and is now completely comfortable with other terminology of the Packers offense. A survey of Packers fans shows that 50% of those polled supported the move."

Looking forward to a good game.

In my 30+ years of international corporate experience, I have seen businessmen downsize everyone, close entire production facilities, rob people of their pensions, take away all their benefits, etc., everything but reduce their paychecks.
The bottom line for business executives is to pander to the board of directors, major shareholders, themselves and their families and their pals.

Spirit and Substance | 5:52 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Observing what is going on in the debates between Mitt Romney and the other candidates, I am amazed at the complexity of the issues with which a candidate must struggle. I am also amazed at the challenges that these brave(or foolhardy)souls must confront in the struggle to be allowed to serve. It takes,I believe, not only a special spirit to sift through the issues for us as ordinary citizens; and it takes a special spirit to deal with challenges and challengers for a candidate. I beleive that Governor Romney has demonstrated the sort of trully courageous and discerning spirit one needs in order to not only be nominated to the Presidency of the United States, but to lead our nation,as well. We live in a(perhaps)the most difficult period in history, I think, and it will take a tremendous spirit, who also brings a tempered character, and substance to the greatest political office on Earth. Mitt Romney is a statesman among politicians.
Re: David | 5:54 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
The Hebrew Sabbath was Saturday.

However, the point is well taken. Many of us have principles.

Groucho Marx said --

"Those are my principles. If you don't like them I have others."

I think that is pretty true about any politician.

Issues, not personalities | 6:36 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
I was disgusted with the so-called debates which are merely nothing more than a forum for politics as usual. Did anyone see McCain try to wiggle his way out of answering his liberal position on illegal immigration?

I'd like to see a debate where the top issues are stated right at the beginning and each candidate specifically states what they are going to do about each one. Then, the other candidates should be allowed to go back and forth. The Democratic debate was one big softball.

Here are the issues as I see them:
1. Illegal immigration
2. The economy--devaluing dollar
3. Trade - why are we letting foreign countries dump their products, some contaminated? Time to tariff
4. The Drug and Porn Proliferation in America
5. America...the empire or nation???
6. Energy - ties into the fall of the dollar
7. Education - block grants to states only.

What in the world is wrong with the American people who constantly try to rip apart our presidentual choices? It is a sad day to witness what is happening, Where is respect and love of our fellow men? I truly feel any m
an or woman who will tackle the problems of America, deserves our attention with an honest desire to focus on the canidate of our choice. Go Mitt Romney you deserve our vote and respect. Ronald Reagan would be proud of you.
Illegal Immigration | 7:12 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
You can talk all you want about illegals immigration in the US - but let me ask you this:

If you go to get your car washed in the Salt Lake Valley and you have a choice of who will wash it, who's it gonna be -

a.) an illegal immigrant from Mexico

b.) a family member of Mitt Romney

or

c.) a suburban BYU-bound teenager from Sandy, Utah.

I think most of us will choose (a) because we want a good job.

Romney can talk all he wants about illegals "stealing" jobs, but what jobs do they have that we want.

When it came time to mow Mitt's lawn, he hired some illegals to do it. I don't blame him. You think he trusts his own kids?

Ronald Reagan is rolling over in his grave with the claim that Mitt Romney is a Republican.
re:Oh Please | 8:08 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
I agree, however, who do you believe that Reagan would approve of?

Reagan was a Goldwater Republican.

I have little interest in streamlining government or in making it more efficient, for I mean to reduce its size. I do not undertake to promote welfare, for I propose to extend freedom. My aim is not to pass laws, but to repeal them. It is not to inaugurate new programs, but to cancel old ones that do violence to the Constitution, or that have failed in their purpose, or that impose on the people an unwarranted financial burden. I will not attempt to discover whether legislation is 'needed' before I have first determined whether it is constitutionally permissible. And if I should later be attacked for neglecting my constituents' interests, I shall reply that I was informed their main interest is liberty and that in that cause I am doing the very best I can.

- Barry Goldwater, The Conscience of a Conservative

Do you see any besides Ron Paul who fit the bill?
tp in colorado | 8:09 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
I am also a pro-choice lds person. The way I understand it is that it is all about agency. I don't feel I have the right to choose for someone else. If they choose the gay life style or abortion that is what they have chosen. I don't have to agree with them or make the same choices. I feel I just really need to try and become a person that God wants to be and not worry about others choices.
I really don't think Romney was ever pro-abortion probably pro free agency which I think is pro-choice.
Also I am voting for Obama on Feb. 5th. If he doesn't make it. I am considering voting Republican for the first time in my life. I do think a lot of the republican candidates are more liberal than they ever have been. What do others think more liberal than in the past???
Also I have heard Romney speak in glowing terms about his wife. Although I probably won't vote for Romney, I do think is wife is fantastic.
Murder = Free Agency? | 8:46 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
tp in colorado: Making abortion illegal is no more a matter of treading on "Free Agency" toes than making murder illegal is. Should we legalize theft so that would-be thieves can make their choices unencumbered by the law? How about assault? Dearest tp, please don't forget the VICTIM before you take the high road of "Free Agency" on this point. It's very dangerous thinking.
Oh Please! | 8:51 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
First of all, thank you for the quote on Barry Morris Goldwater. I loved him, and I can tell you that the Romney family despised, hated, and belittled that man. George Romney walked out on Barry's GOP Convention speech in 1964. I see that Mitt has inherited his father's love for socialism.

Second, yes, I do believe that Ron Paul would fit the bill. Unfortunately, the numbers game isn't adding up. If Ron Paul concedes, and he most likely will (not that I have stopped believing), where do we go from there.

The first choice is Fred Thompson (and oh, by the way, "tp in colorado", Jeri Thompson never donated a dime to Planned Parenthood). Fred Thompson believes in limited government.

If Good ol' Fred concedes, where do we take the Party of Reagan?

My honest gut tells me Governor Huckabee. Maybe that's just me, but McCain and Rudy seem to share Mitt's love affair with socialism and would gladly accept the endorsement of a fellow liberal (Lieberman) to advance their campaign.

So, as a Barry Goldwater Republican, and a Bruce R. McConkie Mormon, lets take this stand for America and elect the Governor of Arkansas.
Jacque | 9:51 p.m. Jan. 7, 2008
Why is everyone praising what Reagan did for the economy? Reagan increased government spending in a grotesque fashion (while cutting taxes), and campaigned to decrease the size of government. The national debt swelled to an unprecedented level, and was so large that the Bush Administration is still dealing with it (and is greatly adding to it). When Clinton was elected, his economic plan - raising taxes - led the debt to be slowly paid off. Bush is praciting "Reaganomics" to perfection: fewer taxes and increase spending. Brilliant. Is the best interest of the country really in continuing Reagan's practices? I'm not saying Reagan was a bad president, he was very effective in office, but he certainly is undeserving of the god-like appearance most Republicans hold of him. Next time you're about to bring up Reagan as the one to compare candidates to (such as many in this forum are trying to do with Romney) think about it, think, think about it.

Obama...funny how Oprah stood up and praised him for having the right stuff...and never mentioned ONE thing that he was going to offer or give the country. Only that he was going to change it all for the good.

OPRAH, would you put Obama in complete charge of all your wealth? Is that how much you trust him? Oprah, put your money (all of it) where your mouth is. Lousy libral!

Mitt Romney all the way. And yes, if I were wealthy, I'd trust my wealth to Mitt. He's proven he can increase it!
