When Utah has to worry about the average smoker before dealing with drug problems, crime problems, and homelessness issues; that tells me that Utah will never improve its ability to recognize where their focus really need to be.

The majority of smokers honor the 25 foot rule of not smoking in public places anyway; such as court house or medical facility; however, now the law has added every place but your private home --- Hmmm... Is that next?

Utah, take care of the real issues first, then deal with the smoking issue. Homelessness and Crime are far more important than issues with cigarette smokers.

Its all political BS directly connected to the religious background of Utah; and having little to do with the health issues of Utah residents...

How is this issue "directly connected to the religious background of Utah?" As a nonsmoking Catholic, I am very happy to see this change occurring in Utah. And, it obviously does have everything to do with the "health issues of Utah residents." Perhaps if you could point out how the "religious background" of California or Colorado led to these type of laws decades ago, then I might be more inclined to listen to your arguments. By the way, no one is denying that crime, drug, and homelessness are problems; however, it is possible to address various problems concurrently.

I'm glad to see these changes taking place. It's unfortunate that there are still some of the old lines from smokers being posted here. I guess they figure as long as the world isn't perfect, then they should still be able to pollute other people's air. This limiting where smoking can occur is happening everywhere, so get used to it. Maybe consider kicking the nicotine addiction and you won't have to be concerned about where you can smoke.

Obviously, anyone who opposes this is a smoker.

All of us non-smokers are sick and tired of putting up with your filthy, stinking, death-come-quickly habit.

Wake up to the real world, the day of the smoker is over. Your days are numbered, and this is a step in the right direction to kill you off.

Shame on you for continuing to light up in this day and age. Grow up. This isn't high school any more.

I'm not a smoker and I oppose it. It takes something away from me that I cherish--the ability to make my own choices. By the way, there is no right to breathe 100% pure air or prevent others from polluting. If there was, cars would be prohibited, as would smoking, BBQ grills, campfires, etc., etc.

And for the record, "death-come-quickly habit" has to be the single least accurate description of smoking that I have ever heard!

maybe if smokers were more respectful of non-smokers by taking their polluting habit away from crowds and not littering their butts wherever they want there wouldnt be a need to pass such laws. even if most do obey the 25ft rule (i disagree this is mostly followed) most is not good enough considering the consequences for breathing smoke.

why should people have to tolerate your smoke while enjoying the outdoors? if i brought a tank of toxic gas and set it near you at your outdoor activity you would tell me to leave and have every right to do so. Why do you feel like your toxic gas is an exception?

your habit your problem. you dont have the right to make it my problem too.

If cities are banding it no problem , but they should not benifit from it either.

Im sorry, but TOM, your comments have nothing to do with this article, a civil liberty is not being taken away, it's giving the civil liberty back to the people. A non-smoker being subjected to a smoker is taking away their civil liberty. A non-smoker has every right to walk from their car to a business without having to step on several cigarette butts. As far as the ban goes, its a good step to improving the life of hundreds, and also improving the way our streets and public places look, without having the constant litter of cigarette butts.
