Korver brings a bigger threat so that the other team will need to focus on him plus he is a more consistent free throw shooter. I love it when he is in.
I was in SLC when the trade took place and everyone sounded exicted about it. He got 17 minutes in his debut but I wonder if this is a sign of things to come or was Sloan just putting him out there so he (Sloan) could evaluate? All indications from the media indicate that Kyle is a good shooter but I wonder what kind of defense he plays? If it isn't up to Sloan's standards his shooting won't make a difference from the bench.
I was impressed with his team defensive capability, considering it was his first night with the team. Maybe his defensive knock is because they don't play it in Philly? So he hasn't needed to? I thought he did a much better job than Boozer or Memo do, and certainly much better than Giri did.
Giri always looked like he was hustling on defense, but ineffectively. Korver looked like it was natural for him to defend someone, and his team switching defense seemed to mostly be there, again considering he's not used to playing with the team yet.
I'll bet Sloan not only left Korver in there in the fourth Quarter just to evaluate him, but also because Korver was being effective on both ends of the court. And it doesn't hurt to have a high-perctentage foul shooter on the floor when you're leading late in a game and the other team needs to foul to catch up.
Sure glad to see Kevin's still got the ability to find good players for this team. The sky's the limit. The team just needs to mature and gel.
I thought Korver played excellent defense, Roy only had 6 pts against him...
Korver was an awesome pick-up for the Jazz. You will all see... Now, we need to package Collins and Almond for a decent defensive-minded big man. Or we may just have to wait for Fesenko to develop to fill that void in the middle. Although, there are not too many available...So, we'll have to see what move they make. I feel so much more optimistic now about the Jazz' future since Giricek is finally out of here!!!
I don't doubt Korver's skills.
I just wonder if he really fits into "sloan's style
of play" . . .
Be careful what you wish for!!! With Korver here and if he keeps playing as well as he did the other night then like the article says where will his minutes come from? Did anyone happen to notice the television shots of CJ and Brewer on the bench towards the end of the game not looking at all thrilled because both lost minutes to Korver. The answer to a problem(three point shooting) could easily cause another(CJ & Brewer Losing Minutes) there. Eventually Brewer or CJ is going to lose out. Not sure who it will be. Brewer has got great inside game and lots of deflections and worked hard on his build. CJ's outside game is developing and his defense is OK. What ever happens someone is not going to be happy there. Watch Sloan make it competition until one is not happy then the dogcatcher will have someone to put in his doghouse.
Korver is talented, but I am not convinced his impact will be any more than what Gira was capable of. Jerry will continue running no plays for his 2-guards, he wont utilize their talents, but now we'll be stuck with someone who has THREE YEARS on their contract instead of Gira's 4 months. On top of that, we lost a first round draft pick. This is was poor management by the Jazz & O'Connor. It doesn't look promising.
Gira was dealt with unfairly, but he's handled it with class (see today's Trib interview). I hope the fans don't boo the guy tonight because he really wasn't treated well by the Coach & he isn't someone (like others in recent past) who LOOKED for a trade. I hope that Philly gives him the minutes and respect he deserves.
We'll see what happens...
Looks like Brewer and CJ are going to take the hit in minutes. Brew is a specialist at steals but you need to be able to shoot outside and stretch the D when you play the 2. He does not hit the deep ball often enough. Korver will. These two may split minutes depending on the matchup of the team we are playing.
Oh well, looks like some of these 2's will be getting shipped out of here. I mean really what do we need Brew, CJ, Almond, and Korver for? We really only need 3 at most.
Fortunately they all have been playing well of late and could be some valuable trade bait.
Then again if Memo does not find his game none of this will matter. Right now we have the flopper Collins and a gimped up white guy, Memo, who can't throw it in the ocean. Memo needs to develop another dimension to his game. Without his 3 point shooting he is roster fodder.
This team has to find a way to make some 3's--we are among the lowest in the league at just over 3/game. Our Western Conference top competition make around 8-9/game.
It's too early to tell who will loose minutes by the addition of Korver, but I think it's pretty obvious that he desereves more minutes than Giri was getting.
One game isn't a very good judge, especially when both Brewer and Miles were struggling and Sloan was trying to see where Korver would fit the best, playing him at both the 2/3. I think that at first CJ, will take the biggest hit. Brewer will loose a couple of minutes, Korver will be the first 2 gaurd off the bench, and CJ will get the time that Giri used to get. Korver shouldn't have a hard time fitting into Sloan's system at all, once he learns the offense. Harpring isn't a good defender either, but Sloan loves his style of play. It seems like Korver is cut from the same mold; a work horse and always plays hard. Harpring is on the tail end of his career and is much slower than last year, so I think that by the end of this season, Harpring and CJ will get the biggest cut in playing time, with Korver splitting his time between the 2 and 3.
Who's Wally Pipp?
This trade will affect Memo's value just as much as it affects the playing time of the other guards. Since Memo only seems to play defense occasionally (usually on slow big men), his biggest asset was his mid-range jumper. Now that Korver is here, the Jazz don't need to cover for Memo's lack of defense and can still have a player that will stretch the other team's defense. Brewer will still get more minutes when we play athletic shooting guards as Korver doesn't appear to be as fast. As for Miles, well, maybe he should try to learn the offense better and compete with Hart for backup PG duties. Hart still doesn't seem to run the offense well and is a liability on both ends of the court. He likes to do isos and loses his man on defense often.
The team will realize that Korver can be as much of an offensive threat as D-Will and Booz, so he will get a good share of the shots (expect him to be the 3rd leading scorer soon). If he gets better, then expect one or both of the following players to be traded (hopefully for a big man): CJ Miles and Mehmet Okur.
Korver is a much better 3-point shooter than Memo has been lately, so Sloan & LHM will realize that Memo's cold hand (of late) and bad defense won't be needed anymore.
At the shooting guard position, Miles will be pushed back to 3rd on the depth chart behind Korver & Brewer, and with Almond waiting with his potential and 3-point prowess, Miles will become upset with his lack of minutes and soon be in Jerry's doghouse. We need to trade Memo and CJ as soon as possible for a real center who can clog up the middle.
Hey MC I agree Hart is really struggling, lets
you have some great ideas, only problem is Sloan
will not see it that way.
but they are both very young and still inexperienced. I would rather have a guy like Korver in who can not only shoot the ball well, but is a veteran and will help Utah in close games (ability to hit FTs). O'conner made this trade because he wants Utah to compete for a title now, not 3 or 4 years down the road when the window may be shut. Anyway, I think Brewer will still get most of his minutes. I think CJ will start seeing some quality bench time.
RE: I LIKE BREWER AND CJ. If O'Connor wanted to compete for a title now then why the step backwards in the off-season in signing Hart and Price. Both have somewhat of a game but it did not make the Jazz better by any means and if anything we took a step backwards. Jazz would have been better off to sign Keith McCloud who was and is available and has ran this offense before and ran it a lot better than Hart. Jazz will not go after a point guard unless Sloan can blow up at one of the expendable guards and O'Connor is forced to make a trade to keep peace and tranquility on the team.
First I would like to thank the 76ers, because they were dumb enough the first time to give us horny, now they give us a horny knock off in krover who is a 92% free throw shooter. Dead on from outside as well. Horny wasn't the best defender either. thats why we got brewer who hopefully will now come off the bench. The 76ers are awesome they took a crying selfish horrible defender off our hands. Cj has had years to prove himself. He better step up and be a man now and prove himself.
with this trade we are headed to the finals again.
Yes O'connor, LHM, and Sloan made another great move.
Let's not jump to any conclusions after one game, the media loves to shake things up. Remember Portland beat us 2 times and why? Because they SAT IN A ZONE and dared us to beat them from the outside. By having Korver in, especially in the 4th, he spread the floor because they know he is a shooter, with Brewer in they don't mind letting him shoot so they won't respect him as much. Ronnie is a stud and he will still get his minutes, Miles is the one who will lose his mins and I will take Korver over miles at the drop of a hat. Great pick up for the Jazz and this will even allow Harpring to rest more if his knee is bad because Korver can play plus Brewer and Miles. Let's not over analyze anything here, Brewer will be just fine. I am sure there will be games when Korver gets more mins cause we need him to keep the d honest and games where we are shooting great and Brewer will be in.
I think Miles has greater long term potential than Brewer. Brewer is athletic and can make some shots down low, but Miles I think has the whole package. He is hitting it from outside, has a nice mid-range jumper, and has been driving it to the basket in recent games. I agree Korver needs minutes, but please take them away from Harpring. He has one good game out of 10, and when Harpring can't make shots or layups he kills the team because he never could play defense.
Get rid of Harpring he is old and past his prime. CJ is the 2 guard of the future. Remember he never played college ball and he has come a long way from when he was drafted.
Play CJ over Brewer? I l am left scratching my head after that statement. No further comment.
