Pakistan has both atomic weapons and terrorist camps and Bush threatens Iran. It looks like Bush has done to Pakistan what Bush did for Howard in Australia and Blair in the UK.
So, so sad... | 8:40 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
What a terrible tragedy. This woman was such an inspiration to her nation and the world. She was the epitome of courage. I only hope that some day the world can learn than violence is NOT the answer.
Moral Agency | 9:12 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Unfortunately there are so many who fear man's moral agency, to think for himself and make choices for himself. They feel that their way is the only way and will kill you because you used your agency to decide you want to live another way.

They do not have the power of persuasion through reasoning and example, but use the power of fear and vengeance to force their way onto others.

I saw a interview Ann Curry from the Today show did with Bhutto shortly after a previous attampt on Bhutto's life and it really said something about both of them.

It showed how much strength, courage and character Bhutto had and what a small amount Curry had.

This also speaks volumes about the cultural differences there are between us and them.

There have been scorching words thrown at the various candidates for President in our country but there have been no serious attempts on their lives and I doubt they move around fearing that the crowd may get blown up by an "insurgent". (The PC way to say cowardly religious fanatic terrorist).

I doubt that the people over there who kill so wantonly even know why they are doing it.

Just abother reason why I thank God every day that I live in this great country.

re: comment of "Moral Agency": You hit the bullseye with your comment. Your point is very true. My worse memories of war are not of "blood and guts", they are of man's lack of humanity towards man.
Intolerance and the forcing of one's views through the use of indiscriminate violence has become the sad legacy of this region.

May Allah the merciful bless this brave leader.

We've had plenty of presidential killings in the US too. I don't know why anyone would feel safe with Hillary running for President. You don't think she would kill to be President? Oh please, pull your head out of the sand. This doesn't look good for Musharraf, who had more reason to have her dead than anyone. Nor does it look good for Bush (birds of a feather flock together). You would hope the Pakistanis will vote for anyone but him, even if it is just a case of better to be safe than sorry.

It's very telling about Utah, when this story didn't even make it into the top 10 most read list on the site. I guess people here care more about BYU football and the Jazz than they do significant world events.

Give me a break Mr (or Ms) self-righteous Anonymous. the story was only posted for a few minutes before it was getting comments.

And what would your comment be? Other than telling us how stooopid we are? Huh?

It's very telling about anonymous posters that they seldom make a point, just a jab.

This was certainly a shock. Not entirely unexpected, but shocking. It reminds me of the Anwar Sadat assassination. That cold, empty feeling of not knowing what's next. And yes, it could happen here, in America.

zacko

Not everyone likes to put their name in public places. And by the way try using the dictionary on stoopid.

I think it is sad that the human race has become so hateful to one another whether it be war, senseless killings, word attacks. It seems history just keep repeating itself

Anonymous, why would anyone read this story here when they could read it on CNN or the BBC or the AP? It makes perfect sense people come here for Jazz and BYU (read: local) news and not world leader assassination news. If you admit you get your world news from the Deseret News, no wonder you want to remain anonymous!

Zacko...and others...the correct word to use is "Murderer". Plain and simple. That is what a terrorist does.

Some random thoughts: "So sad" says Bhutto was an inspiration. Was she not removed from office twice because of corruption charges? I do not mean to speak ill of the dead, and she surely had redeeming qualities...but let us not canonize her just because she was assasinated. I honestly don't know the accuracy of the charges or the eulogies, I'm just worried about knee-jerk reactions. She may have been a martyr solely for the cause of her own political ambition. At least it appeared to be ambition within the machinations of democracy. This is at the least a sad event.

We should have asked her to immigrate, changed the US Constitution so that she could have been president, and elected her. Would have been a landslide.
BBKing | 2:54 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Ms Bhutto's policies would be problematic for many voters, though she was a breath of fresh air for freedom in Pakistan.

This makes for a very difficult issue to handle for the Bush Administration. The history with the current leader is one of blind support: Blind in that we have supported him even when he overthrew the elected government. We are fighting to establish democracies in the middle east and have supported Musharraf's action, which are very undemocratic. Now we have this.

Very difficult issue and makes for a troubling future.

As for the Pakistani nucs, those are under 24 hour watch, by not only Pakistani forces but US Special Forces. If something odd happened there the next we will hear about it is a precision military raid to take control of the weapons. I am not worried about that.

What concerns me is the fate of democratic reform, not only in Pakistan but throughout the middle east. What are the ramifications, if any? That I don't know.

Ms. Bhutto was for change. She was for the common people. She was an advocate of non-violence.
She was a liberal.
She would probably be assasinated here in America by one of the far-right wackos here who hate liberals.
Cynthia | 7:48 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I am reminded this day what one human is capable of. This one beautiful woman chose goodness. It radiated from her. Her conviction of the heart gave me hope.
This is a tragedy.

Ms. Bhutto is no longer here on this earth to defend those who have little or no voice. Who now has the conviction to take up her place?

I do not look forward to the repercussions of this one event.
