The Jazz played tonight the way the would play most nights if Phil were the coach. Would LHM please throw SLOWn a retirement party. Dean will bring the Karaoke
Lemon peel | 4:11 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Have you seen Phils record as a head coach?
Sinan From Turkey | 4:27 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Let's look at the period between 4:32-0:55 4th quarter. Dallas has missed 12 pts and Jazz has missed only 3 pts by shootings. Dallas did 10 pts and Jazz did 9 pts. It proves to good defense and good offensive of Jazz on crucial period of the game. It also proves JAZZ IS BACK, welcome.

Musky - Except for his ring as a member of the New York Knicks World Championship team, Phil Jackson has never won anything that wasn't given to him. Has he ever had to build a team in a small market like Salt Lake. Has he ever won a championship without someone like Michael Jordan or Shaquille O'Niell on his roster. Never. Phil Jackson can't tie Jerry Sloan's shoes. Who do you think taught those guys to play that way? Did you see what the "slow down" Jazz did to Phil's Lakers a few weeks ago - with Boozer and Okur on the bench? Get real.
Skeeter | 6:59 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I predict good things for the JAZZ the next few games.
re: lamonte | 7:11 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
how many ring does phil have in comparison to sloan? end of argument. go lakers!
Boozer? | 8:30 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Boozer has tremendous skills. When I watch him on offense the guy is quick as a cat; fast and strong around the basket. On defense it's like he's running in mud. It's obviously not a physical thing. What then, is the mental/psychological problem when Boozer's playing defense?
Re: Boozer | 8:57 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Uh, after Sloan inserted him in the 4th he stole the ball, tore down a few caroms and held the Mavs scoreless for 6 possessions. Feel free to complain about his defense all you want, but last night, in the forth, his offense AND defense led the Jazz to victory. I'm not counting the efforts of Brewer and Kirlinkio out, but Boozer's been playing the best defense of his career.

If number of RINGS counts then I guess Robert Horry is a better player than John Stockton and Karl Malone COMBINED.

Everyone thinks that Wilt Chamberlain is as good, if not better, than Bill Russell, but Russell was part of a system and a team that won FAR more rings. Does that make Wilt less of a player, of a man, of anything? In short, no.
Musky | 9:56 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
When someone in Jazzland uses the name Phil in reference to a Jazz coach if you think it's Phil Jackson please don't articulate that to anyone.

It's like failing a basketball IQ test. Everyone under the sun who knows anything about the Utah Jazz knows that Phil JOHNSON will be the next head coach of the Utah Jazz. Someone asked what his record was and I don't know but he did win NBA coach of the year, something Jerry will never do.
Jazz will be fine | 10:06 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Jazz have played 6 more games on the road than at home which is good cause that means we will have more home games. The good news is that we have been in every game that we have lost lately and we have Memo back. Memo keeps the opposing center out of the lane and spreads the floor. We need to play defense and close games out. I liked the defensive rotation last night against Dallas, we cut off the penetrator and rotated well and we did not foul as much. Don't worry Jazz fans, New Orleans, Golden State, Portland will not stay ahead of us, it is early in the season. Jazz will compete this year. GO JAZZ!
mike | 11:07 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Hopefully the jazz are back in old form.
AK seemed to be on also- lets hope he keeps it up!
Matt | 11:15 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I'm pretty sure the person that wrote the comment about our record if "Phil" was the coach was talking about Phil Johnson (Utah's current assistant coach) and not Phil Jackson (LA's head coach).
Jazzfan | 11:28 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I'll take where the Jazz are today over where Houston is right now. I just hope that this is the only slump of the season. They will be there in the end. The discussion about getting rid of Sloan is insane. He is developing players to work in a system that we all know is able to slow down the run and shoot type of basketball. It is the same type of system that SA uses. Great game last night!!
lamonte | 11:39 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Matt - Thanks for the clarification. As Emily Latella used to say "Never mind." (blush)
page | 11:45 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
remember when everyone was saying that the jazz don't need memo i think they do need him very much. even if he is not hitting his shoots he still draws a defender to him to open up the inside why do you think brewer has not been going to the hoop for dunks and boozer scoring has been down. go memo go jazz.
JOHNSON not JACKSON!!! | 11:55 a.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Come on Jazz fans, we are talking about PHIL JOHNSON not Jackson. I wouldn't want Phil Jackson anyways. He hasn't done much at all without Jordan and Shaq. He rode there coatails! End of story!
Still soft | 3:48 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Good win at HOME last night... this team isn't a contender right now, so shuffle something around, the fans deserve to have hope at a title. This team is still too inconsistent to contend.
Jazzsmack | 3:53 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Sloan has never developed anyone!

Developing a player means improving his skills. Coaching someone to be better at defense and passing and shooting or any basket ball skill.

No one ever has left the jazz a better player for it.

No one ever left the jazz a more developed player.
No ever left the jazz better at any skill then when they came.

Sloan does not develop players.

He forces players to play a system or they don't play at all.

If this game were on the road they would have lost.
They simply benefited by playing good at home.
Collins Fan | 4:06 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I think that Jarron Collins is very athletic and should try to dunk more and rebound more and actually try to block some shots. I think he is hiding his light underneath a bushel. He is the force we need! He is the Light of the Team.
Re: Jazzsmack | 4:27 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Jazzsmack:

Karl Malone was developed by Jerry, Boozer is being developed. Karl was a decent defensive player, without a jump shot, when he came to the Jazz. When he left he was a league MVP, which is given to offensive players typically. Furthermore, Karl was on the all NBA defensive team during the LATE 90s, why? Because he DEVELOPED as a player.

You know as well as I do that everything you say is wrong, please stop saying it.

The moderators need to stop letting you post. Honestly, it's obvious your comments are inflammatory and offensive on purpose, as your moniker suggests.

DC Hilton | 5:12 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
If Utah doesn't want Sloan, we in DC, stuck with the Wizards, would be glad to take him. It's amazing to me to see so many negative Jerry Sloan comments lately. Flat out, when Sloan retires, I retire from watching pro basketball.
Naha Yazzie | 5:16 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
If I remember, Malone greatly improved his free - throw shooting percentage under Sloan. He also developed a nice 15' jump shot. His rebounding increased and he became more aggressive on defense. Duncan feared him. I am not an avid Sloan advocate
but I think you are wrong again Mr Jazzsmack
Jarron Collins our JC | 6:36 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Collins Fan is absolutely right. Jarron Collins is the flat-footed, charge-drawing, one-dunk-per-year type of player we need to step up. He needs to live up to that $2.7 million paycheck of his. Collins is the inside presence we need - we just had no idea that we had the solution to our problems already on our team.
Nowitzki Has Peaked | 6:38 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Dirk Nowitzki is not the player he was last year. His best years are behind him, as he showed last night. Clearly he was too shaken by the Mavs traumatic and gory exit to a second rate team in the playoffs.

Not that the Jazz have any more reason for optimism. Just noticing that Nowitzki is a great player, but his best years are in the rear view mirror.
Jazzsmack | 6:46 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
I think malone worked on his own shooting, sloan had nothing to do with that. Unless you can point to exactly what sloan did. I imagine that most sloan did was tell him to work on his shot. And no one knows for sure if he even did that.

Boozer developed his skills under coach k at duke, sloan has nothing to so with that. He had offensive skills before he came to utah.

And if his such a great coach why didn't he develop quincy lewis
or deshawn stevenson
or kurt schnider
or kris humphries
or shandon anderson
or jacque vaughn
or ostertag

just to name a few.

none of them got developed under sloan
none of them improved their skills under sloan.
none were better for having been coached by sloan.
Jazzsmack | 7:44 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
Apparently the bar is set real low to be a great coach.

Because all you have to do is tell malone to work on his shot and that makes you a great coach who develops players.
JazzSmuck | 8:03 p.m. Dec. 27, 2007
You honestly think we could have stolen Boozer from Cleveland if he were playing like he has this year?

Furthermore, you just refuted your own argument, JSmack. You listed a bunch of players that left the jazz and continue to stink. None of them have had breakout years or been named league mvp...So how was Sloan supposed to develop players beyond their potential? Their new coaches haven't done any better with any of them, and several of them (Schnider, Humphries) have been logging more minutes, but putting up the same mediocre numbers. Seems to me Sloan was smart to get rid of all of them.

You ruined your own argument dude.
Sinan From Turkey | 12:23 a.m. Dec. 28, 2007
Hello Guys, as a person living outside of US, i wonder why people are so interested in past and also living together with the players which are history right now such as Malone, Stockton. I know they were great at basketball but in past not now. But i see all talk he was this he was that. To me, living with them is like living in past, common guys let's look at today. GO JAZZ.
jazzsmack | 2:43 a.m. Dec. 28, 2007
Hey jazzsmuck If sloan is such great coach why wasn't he able to develop them before they left?

It easy to coach and "develop" players who are already good like malone and stockton, boozer.

Greatness is defined by what you make out others that are not yet good. Now thats real coaching, anybody can coach players who are already great players.
asdf | 9:42 a.m. Dec. 28, 2007
Players like Anderson or Marshall had better stats with Jazz because they played with Stockton. Recent defects like Stevenson or Humphries seem to be doing just fine.

Dirk Nowitzki can only watch as Utah's Carlos Boozer throws down a dunk in Wednesday's game at EnergySolutions Arena.
