fwiw, a fantastic novel, that also happens to chronical the rise and fall of America's golden age of comic books, is The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay.

Some people fail to realize that a lot of comic books are geared towards adults. This doesn't necessarily mean "pornographic", but rather that the stories, subject matter, and plots are adult-oriented. For example, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is a very adult-oriented graphic novel that is very adult-themed (without being obscene), and I wouldn't recommend it for children. Maus is another graphic novel that is World War II-centered, and is aimed to a more mature audience. Don't get caught thinking that comic books are simply for children.
