Goals | 11:59 a.m. Dec. 24, 2007
We all fall short of our goals and then hopefully learn from that and do better the next time - but rarely do we exceed our goals. So don't count on the Y playing in a BCS bowl if that is not something they are picturing and striving for. Accomplishments like that don't tend to just fall in your lap (as a non-BCS team) when your real goal was only a conference championship. I guarantee you Hawaii had a goal of a BCS bowl this year. I guarantee you Urban Meyer had his Utes thinking bigger than a MWC championship too. BYU gives scholarships hoping to produce more than just MWC champs and an increased Utah County marriage rate.

I sure hope you guys are nice to your kids and the neighbors' dog. Go ahead, spill your bile here so you can be a decent human being the rest of the time.

I was there from 80 to 84. BYU was a program that hungered for national excellence since before 1980, and that hunger and drive, combined with a lot of top 20 losses ahead of us, resulted in a National Championship and then a Heisman.

Those that went before helped earn it too, and this year's team put another piece in the foundation. You keep scoffing, they'll keep striving. Most of you realists are truly pathetic. Enjoy your miserable lives and continue to scoff at those who dare to dream of more than mediocrity.

I don't think the writer of this article is trying to say BYU WILL go BCS, but instead they have the potential (not guarantee) and should have the goal (gotta dream big, right?) to hit BCS.

So for all the Ute fans and pragmatic Cougs lets just chill out. This article was written just to get us all waging a war of words on these boards. BYU should try to win every game, and they might just do it. We'll just have to see. How we played UCLA in Vegas (even if we would have blown them out) doesn't mean we'll do well or poorly next season. Who knows...if we would have spanked em in Vegas maybe we wouldn't be ready for them in Provo 08.

Sorry to all you Utah fans out there but BYU won. I'm laughing at all the excuses Ute fans are trying to make and looking for ways to tear BYU down.

The Cougars won the MWC by going undefeated!

We beat Utah again! Starting to feel like old times.

We won our bowl game again!

All this while supposedly in a "rebuilding year".

NIce job cougars. The local D.I.'s are filling up with ute gear again...
cougars1 | 12:20 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
It sure is good to be a Cougar fan... while our program has the BCS as it's goal for 08, the utes have beating UNLV as theirs.

Go Cougars!!!!!!

The Cougars playing in a BCS bowl is as likely as the second coming.
Don't wait up for it.
billy bob | 12:35 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
I don't think BYU will ever win another national championship..Most of the players are married and have a number one priority of family, and the ones who win national championships have a priority #1 of winning a championship, then family and other things, but football is number one to them...
Just enjoy the fact they have done as good as they have..winning a national championship is not as important a family anyway. I'm sure God will not ask the boys about their championship as he will about how well they took care of their families...
It was fluke they won in "83" OU would have beat them had they played them because OU players live for football.
Good job BYU !!!!
re: Facts | 12:44 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
FACT: BYU only returns 4 starters on D!

FACT: Bronco is a horrilbe coach vs non-conference opponents, 1 game over .500 and two of those vs 1AA teams.

FACT: BYU will lose at Washington, at TCU, AT UTAH

FACT: UTAH owns the current 5 year series, 10 year series, 15 year series, and the overall series.

FACT: The last two championships for byu had to be magic!

FACT: The last two championships for Utah; Utah either blew out byu or shut them out!

FACT: UTAH has more players coming back them BYU

FACT FACT FACT: Just ask UTAH, Boise State, and Hawaii who the real BCS busters are!!!!!!

FACT: at this point Utah, byu, AF, NM, utah state, boise state, Hawaii, WYO, San Jose state all have a shot at going to the BCS next year, they will all start 0-0. Bronco will prove again how bad a coach he is next year when he losses 3-4 games, probalbly all will be non-conference games and at utah.

FACT: What happened in 2001 when byu was supposed to go to the B!!CS, that is right-70+ points to Hawaii
Dewaine M. Brown | 12:47 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
I like Bronco's affirmation of Anae. That exhibits trust. Trust endures and grows. Criticism diminishes.
Bronco is very wise.
BCS goal | 12:55 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Are you people stupid? I ask that in all sincerity.

No one is saying that beating UCLA (meaning that win alone) qualifies them for a BCS game. What the Cougars are saying is they needed to win that game so that they could start the season next year in the top 20, thus allowing them a shot at a BCS game.

If LSU had not started in the top ten (preseason), there is no way on God's green earth they could have lost TWO games and still made it to the National Championship Game.

Both the Utes and the Cougars need to start in the top 20 - both are worthy of it. Navy, just like UCLA were not great teams to play. But every one steps up for their bowl game and plays their best (just ask Boise State if you don't think that's the case - East Carolina - give me a break).

The Cougars have a great team returning, so having the BCS as your goal seems only natural. Or should they set a goal of lets say: 9-3 - use your heads people. BCS goals have to start now!
Rivalry: BYU vs UCLA | 12:55 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
sure it could develop, and it would be a very good thing for both teams, esp. BYU. Next fall, it will be a very big game, nationally. Good headlines and background story. Please ESPN, send the "A" gang to Provo.

As for the Las Vegas Bowl: Throw out the previous history and hype (6-6 season, injuries, fired coach etc). It wasn't the same team. Walker had UCLA ready and they came to play. All of his NFL experience along with the blue chip players from southern california and the Big 10 offensive coordinators, it was all on the line, dude.

BYU was out coached the entire game, up until the final three seconds, when Bronco DID NOT ice the kicker. Everyone on the UCLA team was expecting the triditional "time out from the sideline" to ice the kicker. Guess what?
The entire kicking team was surprised and caught off guard by the "no call" from the BYU sideline.

I love to see the stupidity of yewt fans like re:fact. You have maybe three facts. The rest is speculation and ejaculation of your inability to see the results. Your opinions must be based on your pipe dream hallucinations, because since the regime changes in the MWC three years ago the Cougars have out played the Utes. Yes I did use Ute as the team deserves respect for its accomplishments which have nothing to do with the drivel being communicated via blogs by yewt fans.

Go BYU. Oh, and the Second coming is assured so I guess DennyG just anointed BYU a BCS buster.

Thanks
re: Facts | 1:10 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Your "facts" are irrelevant.

Utah lost to byu, didn't win the mtn. west. and remains unranked.

Realist | 1:14 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Don't you people learn from the past at all? Look what happened in 2001 when everyone was talking BCS. Two straight blow-outs. Let's take things one game at a time and the rest will take care of itself.
Rich | 1:24 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Whatever the Cougars do next year they need to give up the PREVENT defense that PREVENTS NOTHING
Wow. | 1:27 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
re: Facts doesn't even deserve a response as he doesn't even know what the definition of a FACT truly is.

I find there to be nothing wrong with talk of being a BCS buster next year. BYU has gone UNDEFEATED in conference play the past two years. What is wrong with raising your goals as a team to the next level? They've dominated the MWC for 2 years straight and now they want to go to a BCS game. What is the harm in having goals that will encourage the team to play better than the past two years? A goal, if they were to reach it, that would result in being undefeated all season and probably getting a BCS bid. I see nothing wrong with that and in reality, it actually makes sense.
BCS? UCLA next year | 1:34 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Hey fellow BYU fans, cool your jets.
Did you NEW Mexico whip Nevada?

TCU, AFA and Utah haven't exactly signed the papers for a formal surrendered, Yet. I think they are all away games next year. CSU has a new coach coming in.

Then there is Washinton, and they want Walker (UCLA) to come on up and run the defense next year.

UCLA in a spoiler role to upset BYU's hopes and dreams...Motivation-Revenge,
Criddle: You're kidding, right? | 1:37 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Your record vs BCS teams (in the regular season) has not been all too stellar. In case you did not notice, UCLA and its FOURTH string QB just about beat you!

Criddle also left out one key ingredient from the mix: luck/health. Where will BYU be if it loses Hall, Collie and/or Unga for sustained periods of time? Probably not undefeated in MWC play. BYU has had very good back-to-back seasons, and should set its goals high. But, BYU has also managed to avoid injuries to its most critical players during that stretch. Don't buy your Fiesta Bowl tickets just yet.
Texas Cougar | 1:37 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Are BYUs comments a little too hopeful? Probably... but delusional fans are what makes college football so wonderful. Like when Utah fans, the week before playing BYU, were saying that they were one of the best teams west of the Mississippi. It just makes for more interesting off season banter, which we'll all need come May.

While I would love to see BYU go undefeated next year (and it is definitely a possibility...they were a couple of untimely fumbles from being undefeated this year), I don't know how feasible a BCS bowl game is going to be. When Hawaii gets blown out by Georgia this year, its going to set the mid-major cause back for at least a few seasons.
WhEeZiE | 1:42 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
How about this scenario? UTAH and BYU "UNDEFEATED" going into the "Holy War", with a BCS bid on the line!! Both teams ranked in top 15!! And I hate to break it to you, but Mr. Collie, a.K.a. "Church Boy" is gonna have the same nightmare that he did in 2004 when Utah spanked him up and down the field!! UTAH will REPEAT what they did in 2004, but only in 2008 and be BCS Bowl bound!! FIESTA BOWL 2008!! Brian Johnson MWC player of the year!!
Re;Rabid fan | 1:49 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Pete Carroll has won two NC so ya lets get Bronco to take his place. Get a clue.
Marsh | 1:51 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
You guys who think BYU is dumb for hoping they'll get to a BCS game next season are annoying. This is football! You need to aim high, shoot for the stars, have huge expectations and then kick your butt trying to make that dream a reality. Shooting for a BCS game is an excellent goal, especially when your peers (Hawaii, Boise State, Utah) are accomplishing the same. I hope we do it. I'm with the team: let's shoot for improvement.
The Grinch | 1:52 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
The Coogerz and their fans need to get a grip. Storming the field after a lucky win over a sub .500 team is about as dorky as it gets. The coogerz are an embarrassment to MWC. Better set your sights a little lower next year like scheduling Eastern Washington two or three times to pad the win column.

To "Rabid Fan"
Perfect name since Rabies does affect the brain. If you really think that USC would rather have bronco than Pete Carroll you should be rushed to the psych ward stat.

To "lots of comments"
I see you chose to capitolize the "B" in Bronco and the "C" in Crowton but not the "L" in Lord (twice). Wonder where your allegiance really lies.

To "BCS game??"
It wasn't "all the talk that Ute fans did" that got Utah to a BCS bowl. It was going undefeated.

Byu did have a good season. They won the conference, beat their rival and sqeaked out a bowl win. But they need to win those games by 20 or 30 points (like the 2004 Utes did) to be seen as a true power. Until they dominate every team they play, byu will have to continue to beg for respect they do not deserve.
Cosmo | 1:55 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
It is nice to dream but aren't you getting a wee bit ahead of yourselves. They beat a non ranked team at a neutral site after fumbling going into the first half and then scraped by on the skin of a finger and we are talking BCS? Yah Right!
BYU alumni | 2:01 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Nice win good game, but please Cougars don't compare us to USC, they beat us two years in a row, home and away. The sighn of a program on the move is thier fans are realistic and not a bunch of idiots.
A Bowl Question For All | 2:02 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
How many Bowl Games has BYU won?
How many Bowl Games has Utah won?
MadMax | 2:18 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Please halt the vitriol! I am a Ute fan, but it was nice to see TDS win a bowl game. (It does not happen that often.) It would have been a shame for the MWC to be embarrassed by a 6-6 5th place team beating our conference champ. Dreams are fine, but often that is what they remain. Both UTAH and TDS are quality programs and deserve better than what is the MWC. Only when they have both moved into BCS conferences can they realistically hope for BCS bowl game consideration. Not only does it take an undefeated conference schedule, but an undefeated non-conference schedule to be BCS bowl worthy. That is not an easy chore in todays' world of college football. (NOTE: stumbles by Michigan, USC, Missouri, Florida, Georgia, et. al.)
To TDS fans stop being so arrogant, selfrighteous and cocky. Those traits are not what represents the goals of your school as taught by multiple devotional services and at your local wards. Practice the principles of the LDS church. To Ute fans let's focus on our team and avoid being charactures of what TDS fans envision us to be.

Illinois Cougars | 3:20 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
When is having self-confidence and self-awareness a bad thing. Just because the team has publically stated their goals, it doesn't make them self-righteous or cocky.

Ute fans have goals(no particular order): A. The ignominious collapse of the LDS Church. B. Total liberal(read:socialist)domination of state and local politics. C. Mill Creek turned to beer. D. Transformation of SLC resemble other hot beds of liberal domination- San Francisco, Seattle, Detroit, New Orleans, Boston, etc. E. Half of the respect and recognition than BYU recieves around the country.

Ute fans need to grow up! Every article about BYU is not a slight on the U. Maybe, you should figure out what has you so conserned about what is happening down south.
A Bowl Question/Answer | 3:36 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
A Bowl Question:

BYU has gone to 26 bowl games with a

9-16-1 record

Utah has gone to 12 bowl games with a

9-3 record

Before 1992 Utah had only been to two bowls

Utah Rankings: Utah has only been ranked in the final yearly national polls 4 times. Two of those four have been in the top 10.

BYU Rankings: BYU has been ranked at the end of a season 15 times.

Utah Football National Championships: NONE

BYU Football National Championships: One

Utah BCS Bowl Games: One

BYU BCS Bowl Games: NONE

A little tid bit: Since 1965 Utah has only beaten BYU 15 times. That is 35.7% winning percentage.

Utah is significantly the inferior program overall.

However, since 1993 Utah has won 9 of those 15 games. The tables truly did turn with McBride.
Bogus Facts | 3:51 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Why can't the Ute fans even get their "facts" right?

Utah barely "owns" the last 5 years of the series 3-2.

Going back ten years, the series is tied 5-5 (BYU won in 1998, 2000, 2001, 2006 and 2007).

Going back fifteen years, the Utes hold the advantage at 9-6, but going back 20 years the series is even again at 10-10.

Which is good, because if you add in all the games from the start of the LaVell Edwards era BYU totally owns the Utes by a margin of 24-11, with the lone Ute victory coming in 1978.

One has to go waaay back to the mid-50's for the Utes to regain the overall advantage in the series.
Get Reat | 4:02 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
LOL! They must be joking. If Saturday's game proved anything - a miraculous fluke of a victory over a less-than-mediocre UCLA team with its 3rd string quarterback - (not to mention the miraculous fluke of a victory against an underachieving Utes team) - it's that the Cougars are not ready for primetime. The BCS? Keep asking Santa, BYU fans.
LB | 4:13 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
All of you are missing the most important point. BCS = MONEY. Money comes in the form of filling a stadium. Utah can't, BYU can. Utah doesn't even buy its allotment of tickets to San Diego. Hardly anybody wants to watch Utah and Navy in SD. BYU fills the stadium in LV. BYU will fill the stadium anywhere in the country as well as most BCS teams. If BYU goes undefeated (like little Hawai'i) they'll get a BCS bid, not necessarily on their "great" team but with their ability to fill seats. Utah had the BCS Fiesta bowl and won against a mediocre Pitt team, but the game was in nearby Pheonix. Utah couldn't fill the Sugar Bowl, nor the Orange Bowl, nor the Cotton Bowl, nor most any other bowl. All you fans think it's a matter of having a national powerhouse team. It isn't. Not even close. It's ability to earn MONEY, MONEY, MONEY. Money drives sports. Good as Utah can ever get, it can't outdraw BYU. Utah doesn't have the fan support! Just look at SD and the Poinsettia Bowl, December, 20, 2007!
BYU v Utah for the BCS | 4:41 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Someone said it in an earlier post but both BYU and Utah return excellent teams. BYU certainly will be a pre-season top 25 team and it would not surprise me if Utah is also or just outside of that. I would love to see both teams go into the final game (unfortunately at Utah) undefeated with a BCS berth on the line. Hey, as long as we're talking about goals and dreaming that one would top them all! Talk about a Holy War - several Utes would convert prior to the game just in case Collie is right!
Anonymous | 4:45 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007

If BYU had to rely on Alumni and the local population for a fan base like the majority of the schools around the country, it would be in the same situation as Utah (and many other high profile programs) as far as filling a stadium in a faraway local for a meaningless bowl game. BYU, much like Notre Dame, draws 90%+ of its fans because of its religion. How many BYU "fans" know nothing about football and never even sniffed admission to the university but claim to be "true blue"? I'm thrilled that BYU can help fill any stadium in the country, because it means the LDS church, of which I am a member, is growing. It doesn't mean your fan base is any better than another.
Hey Not Yet!!!!! | 4:56 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
What the...?
"The planets would have to align for BYU to make it to a BCS bowl. A few key injuries and they won't even run the table in the MWC. Let's face it, MWC teams are one deep at every position. The drop-off to the number two guy is huge. Look at what injuries did to the Utes this year."
YOU MAY BE RIGHT ABOUT NOT GETTING TO A BCS BUT WE'VE HAD MORE THAN OUR SHARE OF INJURIES SINCE FALL CAMP!

""There are things besides having an injury free season that have to go perfectly. BYU's defensive backs will have to grow 6-8 inches and shave more than half a second off their 40 times to hang with BCS schools. DB's have always been, and appear they will always will be, BYU's weakness."

YOU ARE IN FOR A SURPRISE WHEN YOU SEE BYU'S DBs NEXT YEAR - REMEMBER THIS IS REALLY THE FIRST YEAR BRONCO'S RECRUITS ARE PLAYING WITH MISSIONS AND UPPER CLASSMEN. HOWARD, BRADLEY, PITTMAN, PENDLETON - THE CORNERS ARE FAST AND THE SAFETIES BRING THE HEAT. IT IS THE LAST CATEGORY OF ATHLETES BYU HAS TO IMPROVE AND THEY WILL BE MORE THAN JUST FINE.
Blue | 5:05 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
I think BYU should focus on being better prepared for games in 2008, instead of thinking of the BCS. BYU got lucky to beat a 6-6 UCLA team with a forth string QB. BYU doesn't prepare good enough to play in a BCS game. This year BYU would get beat by at least 20 points to any team in this years BCS. Sad, but true.
Nevada Blue | 5:08 p.m. Dec. 24, 2007
Maybe I can't read the Stats right but UCLA's First String Quarterback had fewer yards (about 30) against BYU than their 4th stringer. That means that their 4th stringer was BETTER than their 1st stringer. That means the second String Coach was a Better coach than their 1st string coach because he played the BETTER QB.

UCLA's running back was their top guy last year and just got well enough to play against BYU. And he was really good. No surprise.

BYU does not play Arizona next year. Nevada dropped out and nothing new has been set. Hopefully BYU can learn from Ohio St. and set a game with a small time school.

Hawai'i proves that it does not matter who you play. So does Ohio St. BYU should play by THEIR rules and Schedule Podunk St. and North Southwestern Tech for their first game to WARM UP.

At least next year BYU will have a kicker that made a 60 yarder in high school. BYU's kicking game made it shocking BYU won at all.

Three DAYS ago, UCLA outplayed BYU statistically, but LOST the game. Are UCLA fans blaming the refs, and claiming fundamental superiority anyway, or is that just a BYU thing?
