Jerry may well have shown that he has passed his prime. He is at least partially at fault for this slump and jumps Gira, a proven underproducer. He has done this before with quality players is just plain wrong in his approach.
Dude | 12:37 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I think Giri rubs Sloan the wrong way, I don't really like Giri either and think we should clear some more cap for Deron's big paycheck next year. Giri has had his moments but has been rather unexiting throughout his duration with the Jazz. Still not sure why we signed him in the first place... Why should we pay Giri $4M or whatever for a sub-par 2 guard who can't play defense when we have Morris Almond playing in Happy Valley?
Sloan | 1:12 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I am not a basketball fan. I am however, someone that has read the paper daily for 14 years. Why do we allow Jerry Sloan to verbaly abuse his players? Do we want to win so badly that we allow him to mistreat his players? Look at Coach Mendenhall, Coach Whittingham....they're winning. Maybe they just know how to treat people. Win or lose, Jerry needs to treat his players with respect. Attention Larry Miller: get someone who enhances the organization, not someone who always degrades his players. I know Jerry lost his wife a few years back but that should have made him more compassionate, not mean spirited.

To the person above who claims not to be a basketball fan, how then can you make claims about Coach Sloan? Reading the paper for 14 years certainly doesnt make you an expert on anything. Jerry Sloan is a great Coach, and forces his players to do things his way, which is entirely his right as the Coach. Also he is in the top 5 all time in games won, and has brought alot to the Jazz over the years. Giricek is constantly taking bad shots, not hustling, and having mental lapses. I will say that he does seem to be making a good effort on defense most times, but it all too often is followed by a lack of effort elsewhere. Even at his best he is an average player at best. Another thing i found funny was the comment about Sloan constantly have run ins with quality players. Name one? Tag? Arroyo? Amechi? all below average players, all with attitude issues. AK is the only quality player Sloan has had a major run in with. Get rid of Giri, he is a cancer!

I do not like thee, Doctor. Fell;
The reason why I cannot tell,
But this I know, and know full well:
I do not like thee, Doctor Fell.

The person intoning that venerable rhyme could be Jerry Sloan -- or Gordan Giricek -- or both. Sometimes people instinctively don't like each other, and simply cannot work with each other during periods of high stress. There's a tendency to condemn both parties for not trying harder, especially when they're paid millions of dollars, but sometimes the wiser approach is recognizing that human nature requires a no-fault parting of the ways. The impasse between Sloan and Giricek, a proud man who stands up for himself, probably has reached that point.

That said, I wonder whether anyone will ever play the shooting guard position to Sloan's satisfaction, and if this isn't part of the problem. Players like Hornecek come along only a few times in a lifetime. If Sloan's standard is perfection, he makes himself the enemy of the good, and a lot of good, but not perfect, backcourt players are condemned to failure in Utah.

It's mistake by Sloan-
Giri could be very productive on this team(3pts, offensive spark of the bench)
David Klasovsky | 5:33 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Giricek plays a modern version of how Sloan played back in the day with all those mediocre but scrappy Bulls teams. But Sloan continually limits his team's offense to point guard-power forward interplays and gets too nervous when players like Giricek try to reset the tempo with more inventive play. Giricek is one of those guys that needs to make a series of decisions, and to be involved as the drama of the game unfolds. Sloan uses him simply to change the tempo,or whatnot and doesn't do anything to enhance his euro-style game with any tailored set plays. A parallel relevant and classic Sloan example of overstructuring(there are many)was in last year's playoffs against the Spurs when he refused to give Dee Brown (a true pass-first point guard)a chance to really express some of the team's hidden talents. Bring in Ron Rothstein or anybody else to coach and you have a possible championship team here in my opinion. Sloan has helped develop Boozer and Williams, and done some other good things but his vision isn't wide enough for the highest level of the game. Hopefully the Giricek affair will inspire upper management to do a rethink on coaching.
Paul | 6:31 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I agree with the comment on Coach Sloan. Larry, it shows your lack of Judgement when you keep him on.
kjsutt | 7:08 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Sloan has made Giri a headcase. His defense in his limited minutes is better that D Will who lets his man go inside with a simple head fake. How can anyone get in a rythym when you play infrequently and at unpredictable times? CJ Miles is no answer to a back up two guard. The Jazz are well under 500 when Giri doesn't play. Sloan needs to commit to 25 games with Giri playing 8 minutes each half as a backup and give him a chance to succeed. Every player on the team has defensive lapses and Sloan's singling out of Giri is hurting the team. Sloan has made an art form out of drama on this team by singling out a player who could really help us if given consistent and predictable minutes. It doesn't make sense. Sitting a talented outside shooter on the bench when your team is being zoned is stupid. Sloan should shut up and let Giri play without him looking over his shoulder all the time. Sloan has destroyed Giri's confidence and those of his teammates. I thought the goal was to win and not Sloan's ego. He owes Giri a public apology.

Doug | 7:49 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Have you noticed? When the Jazz are on a losing streak, Sloan often stages a public fight with one his players--to get our attention away from Sloan's failures as a coach.
drebyu | 8:06 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Giri was a big contributor off the bench in the playoffs, making what seemed to be nearly half of his 3-point attempts. Why should Sloan go away from what worked so well in the playoffs last year? Giri was at his best then, making crucial shots off the bench. I don't believe he's intentionally irritating Sloan. And Coach Sloan c'mon... it' CHRISTMAS! Don't be a Scrooge.
Mike | 8:15 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I can't believe that we are having this conversation. People talking about letting Jerry go. How absurd. How many of us have ever had a confrontation with our boss. And still been treated fairly by that same boss. I'll bet some of us this happens frequently. However the big difference is that in our situations we don't have cameras and press there to pick it apart and come up with what it supposedly means. And we also don't have thousands of biased people (one way or the other) who think that they have somehow recieved an honorary pshycology degree and can analize human behavior now. In my opinion I think that we need to let the people who actually know what is going on, and are actually involved in the situation deal with it. I know that I will take some flak for this. It is just my opinion however, and you can agree or dis-agree.
Out in Tooele | 8:21 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I completely agree with David Klasovsky's remarks, especially "...his vision isn't wide enough for the highest level of the game." I have always felt that Jerry is one of the best coaches in the league as far as preparing his team to play, but he reminds me of the German high command on D-Day ("The Normandy invasion is a feint. We KNOW they are going to invade at the Pas de Calais) in that he doesn't seem to be able to change tactics during the heat of the game.
teter totter | 8:24 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
That pretty much sums up how Gira plays. He is the most inconsistent player ever to play the game. One game he's good and another he sucks. Gira will miss 5 threes in a row and then make 5 in a row, but who wants someone to take 5 bad shots. Gira needs to practice more, and play hard on every possesion. When is the last time Gira got Sub of the game, or even had a steal, an Assit, a block, or a stinkn Rebound. I'm with sloan Get rid of Gira. Gira simply needs to take a chapter out of the book of Matt, Andre, and Deron. You have to earn sloans respect, and you do that by playing hardnose Jerry ball just like the three I named have.
Grow up Gira
Jay | 8:26 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I completely agree with the comment by David.

Jerry is a great coach but has a very narrow vision of an offensive scheme. Is it just bad luck that the Jazz have never had a 2 guard, small forward or center that was a real offensive threat?

While I don't think Giri is the answer, I worry that Ronnie Brewer will end as a wasted talent. I would love to see some set plays that are specifically for the 2 guard or small forward.
John | 8:31 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I believe it's time to replace Coach Sloan. We need someone that has people and leadership skills.
Sloan-capers cont'd | 8:32 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Clearly, Sloan has a communication problem, period! Since Gira obviously doesn't get it--claiming he's "done nothing wrong" several times this season, this is a classic Sloan coaching-ism that demonstrates a clear and disturbing in-ability to communicate more directly with (and especially to his foreign-born players)--or at least in a way in which he can't be MIS-understood. Besides their fourth-quarter funks, just look carefully at the Jazz's team defense in these late quarters in every game. Their as predictably soft as cup cake crumbs--especially in the middle. So it is rediculous that Sloan's ire rests merely on Giri's toush, when i.e. Memo and Booz have a reputation for being soft under the basket and can't (or won't) consistently step up to contend with--even guards coming right down the throat at them! (Remember Miller questioning booz's man-hood after his first Jazz season--hasn't ever really toughened up yet!) Booz sets the example for this team. So by his example, it's no wonder this is a team of million-dollar, UN-motivated defensive cream-puffs (Kirilenko, Harpring excepted, and one or two others!) who regularly refuse this coaching staff's insistence on playing TEAM defense! I say, poor, Scapegoat-Gira!
Sloan's Nature | 8:36 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I think Sloan is trying particularly with Kirelinko. But in the end he (like all of us) is just who he is. And I think he inately is too rigid for some of the players who are on or who have been on the Jazz. His style is perfect for others. This just mirrors life in general.

In the last 20 years Sloan has proven one thing:
He can't win championships with all star players.
Coach paid to Coach | 8:53 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
If I was coaching Gira, I would sent him to the locker room every time he does that stupid shuffle step travel. Sloan is paid to coach. If a player is not willing or able to play as coach tells him to than its time to go hit the showers...

Jerry we love what you've done. Now go out gracefully. Be remembered for the 1000 wins not this ugly stuff that is to come. Larry don't take a chance on losing DWil. Bring in a coach who can coach young players in 2008 and beyond. Don't wallow in the mire.

i think this one is on slone all the way.you don't treat players that way, i could see it when slone and ostertag would get into it, but grow up slone before no one will play for the jazz. he was the same way with AK.all of us are upset with the jazz but it's not Giricek fault. how about getting on the worst defensive player on the team boozer lazy lazy lazy.and williams is playing his way out of a all star spot that's for sure.We got giricek for his offense not his defense he is what he is except it. don't like it then shouldn't have traded for him right. and last year he did as well as anyone on tracy m.

Time to send Jerry back to the tractors! He has NEVER and and WILL NEVER win the big ones! SEND HIM HOME, LARRY, SEND HIM ON THE NEXT PLANE!!!
bottom line... | 9:39 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007

Hmmmm... Didn't Sloan's recent contract extension just barely preceed the now 8 of 9 game loosing streak???

Hmmmm... Hasn't Kirelinko had the same problems with Sloan?

Hmmmm... Haven't the Jazz lost other talented and thriving players for similar reasons??? (Deshawn Stevenson, Carlos Arroyo, Donyell Marshall, Howard Eisely, Jacque Vaughn, etc, etc)

I'd say Giri makes some dumb mistakes too but if EVERY step you made, every choice you made, if every thought was criticized by a foul-mouthed, tough guy that has nobody to answer to, how well would YOU perform?

Isn't there's a saying about swearing that goes something like: Swearing comes from a small minded person trying to exert themselves forcefully.

BOTTOM LINE: SLOAN HAS GOT TO GO!!!!
The Jazz? Who? | 9:39 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
The Jazz are playing like a D-league team right now. They have the talent that was manifested last year but the drive of a pee wee softball team.

Wake up out of your trance and step up to the plate. The burden of blame falls on everyone; not just Sloan, not just Boozer. Step up and play like a team that deserves to make the playoffs.
sloan has got to go | 9:41 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007

didn't Sloan's recent contract extention preceed
this loosing streak?
Concerned | 9:45 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Sloan is tough as nails Physically, but mentally weak. Why not try motivational aproaches instead of verbal insults? What took place in front of spectators and TV viewers regarding a mistake made on the floor should NEVER happen. I believe other players feel the same but fear of the same treatment as Gira got, keep their mouths and actions quiet. Changes must be considered.
Sloans Abuse Quota | 10:00 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Bottom line is Jerry has a quota of abuse that he has to dish out and Giricek happens to be this years target. If Ostertag, Amaechi, Arroyo or Chris Morris were on the team, Jerry wouldn't even notice Giricek. When Giricek is gone who will be the next target when the team is down? If everybody thinks Giricek is so bad on defense (I'm not saying he's good) look at the Kings scouting report and see who the opposing scouts think is soft on defense "Boozer tends to coast on defense, take it at him and make him play".

Boozer is awesome on offense but to get to the next level we must have some interior defense from somebody and some outside shooting by someone as well.

Sloan Haters | 10:03 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Notice how everytime the Jazz go on a losing streak the Sloan haters show up saying it's time for him to go....he's past his prime....he's out of touch. You don't coach for 20 years in this league if you are any of these things. Where were the haters during the playoff run? Be careful what you wish for Sloan haters, when Sloan walks away from this game there will never be another like him.
Babysitter | 10:07 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
We brought on Hornacek to babysit AK, so now bring back someone else, like Frank Layden to babysit Giri.

Robert M. Wall | 10:13 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Sloan governs by intimidation and has made it clear he dislikes Giricek. Sloan stated last year that he does not like to air his differences with players in the press, yet last year Sloan announced to the press that he was starting C.J. Miles because Giricek did not practice hard enough. Starting an unproven rookie type player was the ultimate insult. Miles proved he was not ready to play in the NBA. Sloan did his best to destroy Giricek's confidence last year just as he destroyed Kelinko's confidence. Sloan dislikes Giricek 's defense. Who plays defense any worse than Boozer, Okur and Williams? Sloan never singles out a superstar like Boozer or Williams for criticism even when they deserve it. Sloan got rid of Mo Williams, Deshawn Stevenson, Chris Morris, Arroyo, and many others while keeping Lopez when it was apparent he could not play up to NBA standards. I believe Kerilinko would be a bigger star with a team like Phoenix. Sloan seems to be willing to intimidate the Jazz's foreign players while other teams like like the Lakers and Suns accomodate them. Go figure! Robert M. Wall
1263 | 10:22 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
It's about 19 years past time for Jerry to leave. If the Jazz would have had a coach worth his weight back in the Malone Stockton era Utah would have rafters lined with championship banners. Instead we have a coach that slows down the tempo of a game in the 4th quarter and then blows leads and continues to blame the players instead of taking any accountability.
through thick and thin | 10:42 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
I think Larry Miller feels Slone's Coach position is a "calling" and not just a hired job. It is way past time for Jerry to step down, head to the midwest, hop on one of his antique tractors and whip his piggys and cows into shape...at least when they poo-poo on him, it is the thing to do! Let Jerry yell at his barnyard beasts, point his finger at the barn door and banish the offending bull or boar (yep, try that, big boy). There will never be a ring for the JAZZ as long as Jerry is the coach.

james | 10:49 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Gira Might not score or play defence every night. You can always count on him being called for at least one traveling violation per game though.
As to Jerry not winning a championship with all star players not many teams did in that time frame. A little problem called Micheal was in the way.
Buckeye | 10:56 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
to teter totter:

5 missed 3 pointers and 5 made 3 pointers...that's 50% shooting from the 3 point line. How many Jazz are shooting 50% period. Sloan has his favorites, Dwill, Booz and Milsap. They can do no wrong, just like Stock, the Mailman and Horny. Giricek was traded for his offense, but Sloan has screwed him up to no end. The guy can't go out there every night knowing that if he made a mistake he would be pulled out of the game. If that was the case, all the starters would be sitting, especially Andre (how do you like his passing)? I think the Jazz should look at the Suns and change their style of offense. The Jazz have proven they can score points so let them. Look how Raja is playing in Phoenix as opposed to being tied down in the Jazz offense. If you score more points than you give up...you win. That will never change and never will the Jazz.
WHATEVER PAIGE | 10:57 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
We traded for him because we had Deshawn Stevenson who was lazier than Giri. I know that is hard to belive but he was thats why we traded for him, and blame that on O'connor if you don't like that deal not SLONE. Bozzer is lazy on defense but he scored 39 points against Atlanta. Maybe PAIGE we brought him in for his offense too. He is in the top 5 for scoring in the league. As for Giri well he is in the bottom 5 of the league. When I see Giri he just screams Laziness, and Selfishness. He is a ME ME ME player not a Team player. At least AK humbled himself after the 7 game series with the Rockets. If Giri wants to play again he will have to start with hard work. Which means he will never play for the JAZZ period.

Sloan is not the first coach to have problems with Gira. A couple of his European coaches ran him and his coaches at Memphis and Orlando also had problems with him. Sloan's two guard generally needs to be able to hit open shots and play decent "D". Let's give CJ and Almond a shot and if they bomb, there is a whole league full of guys playing the two that would relish an NBA call up. Roberto Bergersen is a guy that could probably step in and contribute immediately if Mo and CJ fall on their face.

Sloans perspecive: His head is about to explode because his team is not performing. He was frustrated and he made a caustic comment to Giri that he should not have made. I KNOW NONE OF US HAVE EVER DONE THAT!!

Giri is like a schizophrenic player. Hot/cold then conforms/won't conform to offense. I do not think he is all bad and I tell you one thing--we desperately need his outside shooting but conversely we really need discipline on the floor right now if the team is going to break these zones against us. Can see both sides of this.

Sloan over reacted (because his Pansie players could not handle the lousy Bobcats) and I suspect he knows it--they will get this patched up. Giri knows Sloan as well as anyone and seems to deal pretty well with it. He told him to go sit at the end of the bench and b****--there have been worse things said by Sloan.

Sloan is at his wits end with these players right now and I don't blame him. So are most of us. What are we all thinking about their 4th quarter meltdowns lately? Maybe he should have sent them all home!

Sloan must go | 11:18 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
It's funny that this losing streak started right after they announced Sloan's contract extension. Perhaps the team is showing their displeasure and they have quit on Sloan. Giricek is not an adequate 2 guard, but Sloan has terrible people skills and has a negative personality. Sloan might know the fundamentals of basketball, but every word that comes out of his mouth has a negative tone and it affects the team. I'm surprised that Malone and Stockton supported Sloan all those years and didn't mutiny. The Jazz need to fix a lot of things, poor player decisions were made over the summer, not keeping Dee Brown on the team was just one of the mistakes. Poor player decisions, poor coaching and it's starting to look like a repeat of 2004-05. If things don't get better quick, Boozer and Williams might be the next ones to revolt. The Jazz have to stop playing soft and bring in people who aren't afraid to play a physical game. And they need a coach who's able to get along and be a positive influence on the team. I've always thought Flip Saunders would be a good coach for the Jazz.
v | 11:19 a.m. Dec. 21, 2007
Sloan is a brilliant practice coach that teaches fundamentals. That is where he should have stayed. But he is continually outcoached in games. He does not adapt to match ups and defenses. Instead, he substitutes in strict patterns and expects his players to win in spite of bad matchups. Then he yells at his players for not winning.

Additionally, he destroys team chemistry. Sloan is an abusive coach who continually demeans players. He cannot manage a team. This current slump started when Sloan got his new contract. The players have gone into a depressed slump probably because they were hoping that this would be Sloan's last year. Without Fisher to hold the team together under Sloan's abusive coaching, this young team has wilted.

Phil Johnson should be head coach and Sloan should be the assistant. Sloan should never have been a head coach. I am sure that Sloan would not be able to shut-up on the bench, so he should probably retire and let Phil have his chance to shine again.
