This team has gotten out of control. Maybe its time to get a new perspective. It seems apparent that the new offensive rules to make the NBA game "more exiting" have left Sloan's defensive style alittle out of date. Also Sloan's ability to relate to this generation seems to be problematic, or is it the those from over the big pond he can't seem to understand. I am a sloan fan, he has changed up his offence some to match the ability of his players, but I am not sure about the defence. I don't have any answers, but things have got to change.
We are now...the Utah Knicks. Congrats!
Giri is a great player. He probably is one of the top three shooters on the entire team. But Jerry Sloan does not run an offense that Giri can play within. Jerry expects the team to pass and screen until you have a good shot under the basket. Giris mentality is to shoot if hes open. Jerry sees that as selfish basketball and he will not tolerate players playing outside of the system. I agree with odog that something has to change. But I would wait until memo and matt are back in the lineup and have played a few games before I tinkered with the roster. I cant see us getting fair market value for Giricek because teams know we are trying to unload him and he hasnt had the opportunity to produce valuable numbers because he rarely plays. We might be better off bringing Morris Almond up from the d-league for some growing experiences and letting Giris contract (which will expire at seasons end) expire at the end of the bench.
i say trade giri. i like giri, but if all he does is argue with sloan, a trade must occur. I say the jazz work up a trade that will bring raja bell back here.
i say trade sloan and get the passion back in the players
it sad when gira can chute after all he did make that 10 foot shot. COACH SLOAN HAS TO TURN TABLE AND TAKE ATTENTION FROM HIS TEAM NOT PLAYING WELL. WHICH HAPPENS
I really do like Sloan but I can't understand this, he seems a little out of line on this one and I think he let his emotions take over. I also wish we had more of an idea about why Sloan dislikes Giri so much, if it's just the fact that he doesn't always play within the system then a lot of players should be getting yelled at in public.
If not playing in the system gets you sent home then most of hte team would be gone.
Sloan, as an old school person, needs a kickin' boy for his own reasons. It's like the casting in the old Star Trek shows. The guy who wasn't part of the core group you KNEW was going to get killed. I think Sloan's treatment of Giricek is not up to modern standards of professionalism.
If Giricek goes then watch out Ronnie Price.
Anonymous---- Bell would not come back here for twice the salary he gets in arizona !! No one on our team makes more mistakes than Collins yet I have never heard Sloan complain about him. Like I said before Sloan wants all 115 points scored in the paint and every other coach in the league knows this and thus all the turnovers passing into middle. It amazes me how each year we start out with win streaks when we are not so structured---then as Sloan increases his coaching--we lose.
Sloan doesn't like Gira because Gira won't accept responsibility for poor play (he is always faultless in interviews), HE TRAVELS MORE THAN A MINOR LEAGUE BASEBALL TEAM, and his defense (despite his self-perception) is suspect. He's slow, gives up the baseline (which Jerry preaches against), and fouls shooters when they're shooting. Those problems don't make up for his sweet shot. I'd like to see Almond get some PT, and I'm still convinced that if CJ ever felt comfortable in a game, he could really produce too. The silver lining here is that a trade might involve Jarron Collins. Maybe some other team has a really big chair that needs holding down. The sooner Collins is gone, the sooner Fes will become what we all wanted Ostertag to be.
new time new era sloan out someone else in. we have the talant its just the coach.
Y'all fair weather fans need another team to root for. I've been a Jazz fan all my life, and while this stretch of the season is horrible I still have faith. Right now, as people haven't been able to see, most of the Jazz winning or losing depends on Deron Williams ability to stay loose and relaxed as the game goes on.
If Williams figures things out in the next few games the Jazz will again romp to the Western Conference Finals, if he can't get it figured out it's going to be a long, long season.
This isn't about Okur, Sloan, Giri, or even Boozer, Williams needs to figure it out, and fast.
I agree with stop it. If your a real fan you would see that it's not about sloan..He's a great coach and if the players would listen they would win and Williams needs to lead them. It all starts with him and Boozer. We don't need a new coach. We need heart!!!!
If you are a real jazz fan you would be willing to look at the jazz crically, and not through rose colored galsses.
If you did you would see the real problem: sloans system.
NO shooting guard could ever succeed in it because, at best, they are the tird or fourth option.
On championship team the 2 guard has been, almost always, the premier position on the team.
Gira wants to take a shot, and he is given (heck) for it.
only boozer and deron are allowed get the points and all the glory.
It's no wonder so many other players have problems with the system.
Only those who do exactly what sloan wants, like collins, are ok no matter how bad they actually are.
Boon a g - you are right that we need heart, but we also need an outside shooter. To survive in the NBA these days a team needs to be shooting 20 to 25 three point shots per game (and making 35-40% of them). The jazz shoot 5 - 8 and with teams shooting three times as many and making a good share of them that will make it tough to win games when all that you shoot is worth two points. Also, how Collins lasted this long? Look at his career averages. I wouldnt even call him a roll player. When he goes in the game you can count on the fact that he will only get fouls and otherwise make zero contribution. And a starter now? I dont get it.
@Boon a g - What credibility do you have as an analyst or as one able to say who the "real fans" are. Heck man, I think part of the huge price of the ticket I purchase, says I can have the opinion I want of a coach. If Sloan is "a great coach" as you believe, why is it that you feel like "if the players would listen ..." Why is it this "great coach" does not have them listening to him?
I am surprised to see so much support for Giricek. I personally do not like his game. He can shot (albeit in streaky fashion) but is not good on the defensive end nor in most other facets of the game. I think the Jazz can do much better than him and would love to see him go. As for Sloan, I love his style. But he is not always right and may have overreacted with this one. However, he gets a tremendous amount out of this team and if you bring in a relaxed and laid back coach I think the Jazz are a 40-44 win team. The toughness that Sloan brings to the team is necessary IMHO. The Jazz have some very good talent but need to compete hard every game for the entire game to have a chance. They have to play physical because their inside presence is not huge and their outside game is questionable. I would hate to see the Jazz offense if Giricek were given the green light to shoot em up whenever he wanted. That would be ugly.
it seems that most of you forgot how sloans system works. A jump shooter can never suceed or contribute? i remember a guy named hornacek that fit that role. he could shoot, defend, and rode shotgun to malone and stockton. the reason giricek doesnt have a role is that he doesnt play defense. hornacek was called to guard players like michael jordan. i agree that collins needs to go but the jazz need players that will put team first. like the hornaceks, adam keefe, of antoine carr. its that group of players that made it to the finals. and a team like that can still play and compete in the nba. oh and how many times did the jazz make it to the finals, western conference finals when malone/stockton got all the glory? the jazz has the talent but they need to buy into sloan's system that worked with two super stars and players that had a role and willingly fit that role. sloan knows what he is doing. fourth on the all time wins list! how much belly aching did you hear in the 90's from players? i dont remember much! Go Jazz!
nobody really gives jarron enough credit , yeah he fouls alot , but he also is willing to put a body on someone, and draw charges. Unlike Mehmo who looks like he is afraid to get hit. I agree that utah needs to trade Gordan, but they need to keep Collins, i know alot of you would not agree with me but he plays better defense than Mehmo. I think Utah needs to pick up the 7'5' center that they got in the 2004 draft, in which they traded him to Dallas.
Jerry needs a dog to kick when things aren't going well, If it's not Giri, it will just be sombody else. I wish it were Collins
