Go Navy.

Navy by 32
UTE gotta be kidding me! | 7:16 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
The only team you beat by that margin is Army.

And trust me Utah isn't Army.

Also, we aren't Duke, Temple, Rutgers, Ball State, Pittsburgh, Notre Dame, North Texas, Delaware, or Wake Forest.

The only game you won that impresses me is Air Force and well that's a rivalry C-I-C game.

If Utah gets up 14 by the third quarter it will be Utah 38, Navy 10.

Otherwise Utah 34, Navy 24.

GO UTES!!!! from Virginia!!!!

Good times for sure, but this bowl will never make the big time until they drop their insistence that we pronounce it poinzetteeah bowl. Real men say poinzetta.

Great comment, well thought out, and good insight to back it up. How are things in Provo?

What gives? | 7:27 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Not even a story about Utah's Bowl appearance is complete without references to BYU. The Whit might have defected to the North but only because the South had second thoughts about him.
Red Blood | 7:40 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
byu had second thoughts about Whit? Are you kidding me? Can byu fans accept anything other than the daily herald or dick harmon articles as truth?
The Unfortunate Truth | 8:29 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Yes, Whit spurned BYU. But, guess what? BYU's second choice has beat Whit 2 out of 3. And, Whit was not the U's first choice either. Their first choice has won all of 5 games in 3 years at UNLV. Funny how things work out.
re Unfortunate | 8:42 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
The issue is whether BYU had second thoughts about Whitt prior to Whitt making a choice. That is a simple issue to put to bed. Both BYU and Utah went after Whitt hard and neither had second thoughts prior to him making his decision. What has happened since then has no relevance in the issue at hand.

Now, about Sanford. He was not Utah's first choice. When Urban left, Whitt was the first choice of his staff to replace him. That never changed.
re:What Gives | 8:44 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
What, you wanted a story of Whit's experiences playing for Utah?

BTW, what gives with Utes posting on a U of U story?

Shouldn't you be over where you always are, posting on the BYU boards?
re re Unfortunate | 9:01 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
My point was intended to be that it is interesting to look back after these coach-hiring frenzies and see results. In the long-run (5-10 years), I think Whit comes out on top. Now, if you'll excuse me, I've got a plane to catch to San Diego. Go Utes!

BTW, the Sanford deal is true. Of course nobody admits it now. But ask someone "in the know" and you'll see. Whit also wins this one (short-run AND long-run).
JD | 9:11 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Navy spanked Air Force, Air Force beat Utah = Navy beats Utah 28 - 17
Coach Whit | 9:11 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Of course, his heart will always be with BYU. How could he turn his back on such a great school and experiences.

Just lucky he wears red and BYU didn't make such a huge mistake!
Runnin Utes | 9:15 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
I hope the Runnin Utes will run no where!

For the first time, I will be a Navy fan. Go Navy!

They do well against running teams, and teams that have 4th and 18.
UCLA Fan | 9:31 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
I can't beleive you cougar fans are bashing the utes. shouldn't you be worrying about your own team? Aren't they in a bowl game? Oh yeah they are playing us, wish we had an opponent that we hadn't already played and beaten this year. I guess playing a lower tier school in a mean nothing bowl is all right. At least we'll get paid and take one more step towards making it three in a row.
Only in utah | 9:37 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
would cougar fans have to comment about the Utes bowl game and bring up their lame predictions and lame rivalry smack. Navy presents an interesting opponent for the Utes. On the bright side the Utes got an opponent with a winning record AND one that they have not already been beaten by earlier in the year. perhaps you folks should take a lesson from Bronco and focus on yourselves, and not what your rivals are doing.
TheHailstorm | 9:49 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Hey Gary .. Byu fans save your wind for the hot soup. Whittingham is excellent with his clock management skills and I am glad that he has left to schlorships to offer the Southern california boys and is not going to the boring bowl. Before th blue bloods start the chest thumping they should get at least two wins in a row and SIX !!!!
6 Wins in a row and I see and hope for the seventh.
Clock management and a poor navy defence should have UTAH in position to win their # 7 bowl. Get that blue blood band of brothers 7 not 1+ 1? maybe.
BYU logic | 9:57 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Right on JD, way to reinforce those stereotypes! Have you every heard of this failed theory called the "commutative property of football" (aka "BYU logic" since BYU fans in the past have had inexplicable faith in this theory)? The theory is if team x beats team y, and team y beats team z, then team x would beat team z.

Since Navy beat AF and AF beat Utah, Navy will certainly beat Utah, right?

So here you go: Nicholls State beat Rice, Rice beat UTEP, UTEP beat Tulsa, and Tulsa beat BYU. Therefore, by your own "logic", Nicholls State is better than BYU.

Thanks for reminding us that stereotypes are only funny because they're partially true.
RE: BYU Logic | 10:16 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
I agree that this theory of logic is generally absurd and I hope the BYU guy was merely having fun. However, since Nicholls State would beat BYU, then Nicholls State would beat the U, because, we are aware, BYU BEAT Utah. You can beat Navy, good luck, but you still have the loss to BYU which upsets you more than anything, even the shutout against UNLV (which is probably the most embarrassing loss I can recall).
RE: ALL THOSE NEGATIVE POSTS!!! | 10:28 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Ah the utes are in hog heaven with their warm weather and playing the ideal bowl opponent. Right?

If the utah fans are so forth-right and self-righteous about BYU, that's fine. And if BYU continues to play year after year after in the Las Vegas Bowl.....(ednausium) it simply means that the Cougars will undoubtably be the MWC champion in football. Year after year after year. Which means that the very average/BCS busters will finish 2nd or third. Right?

And next year instead of SanDiego, you'll go to the New Mexico Bowl. Wow. I can hardly wait for you guys to do that. Albequerque in December? A couple of months after you beat or lose to New Mexico in Albequerque again(lol)

Its ironic that ute fans have so much to say about byu in posts intended to extol the virtues of Ute football abd THEIR bowl game.

And can you believe that a UCLA fan is bashing BYU and their fans on apost on this article. Sounds to me some yewt fan wants us to think that UCLA and their fans actually care about the utes/

Whoever you are UCLA Fan, I call you out, you're a LIAR.

GO COUGARS!
Byu has only won 2 bowls | 10:50 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Byu has only won 2 bowls in 16 years. So they shouldnt be running their mouths. And they can't run their mouths without mentioning their "1984 national championship". But he I'll BRING UP THE PAST FOR YOU COUGAR FANS THAT JUST CAN'T LET IT DIE.

Utah won the NCAA mens basketball national championship back in 1944 How many of those does BYU have???? SO SHUT UP SHUT UP ABOUT A FREAKIN VICTORY THAT TOOK PLACE OVER 20 YEARS AGO.

What has BYU done in the last 10 years? Won a few conference championships but hardly any bowl games. and it serves you right.

BYU Fan | 11:31 a.m. Dec. 19, 2007
I'm a big BYU fan. And all I have to say about this game is GO UTES!!!
Hey only 2 Bowls | 12:52 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
BYU fans don't "run their mouths". They state what has happened.

Ute fans always say what is going to happen and never talk about what they did, because except for 1 year, or a bunch of forgettable bowl wins, they have never done anything, so the Ute fans continue to "run their mouths".

The Utah NCAA basketball National Championship in 1944 was won by a Redskin team during the War, after they had been bounced out of the NIT (which was the premier tourney of the time). In reality, Huge astrisk, but BYU fans give you props for it, and yet you can't stand that BYU won their national Championship (I was at the game, I saw it, deal with it).

Ute fans are weird.

Kyle's History | 12:58 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Isn't it neat that to find Kyles successes in a San Diego Bowl they have to dredge up old photos and stories of BYU? Why not any Utah stories?

Sort of pathetic, not having any history. Sort of like you never existed.

Or really even exist now?
Re Hey only 2 Bowls | 1:27 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
If the NIT was the premier tournament in the 1940's, then Utah won a legitimate NC with the 1947 NIT. Since they won in '44 (NCAA) and '47 (NIT), you have to acknowledge one was legitimate. There is no asterisk in 1947 - and they actually beat Kentucky for the championship!

And, it is true that most of Utah's bowl wins are forgettable. However, so are most of BYU's. The world really isn't interested in bowls unless they are played on or after New Years Day.
Motorcraft Ute | 1:30 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Why is it that most of the posts on this story are from Zoob fans? This is a story for Ute fans, and yet Zoobs can't leave it alone. How sad it must be to be a Zoob. I am so glad that I where RED and WHITE!
GO UTES!!!!
Ute man | 1:39 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
oy vei! Guys it's just a bloody game... Whittingham has his weakness, but again look at his long run track record at the U.... He's a sharp defensive line and yes he's weak offensively. But managing the clock is a wise thing in this game, hence Urbans talents, Don Schula and other great coachs from the past.... Whether they win or loose I'll always bleed red... cause I'm a ute and your just never gonna change that! Ute Alumni
Random Thoughts | 2:03 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
1. Whittingham was the best fit for Utah and Utah was the best fit for Whittingham. Yes, he considered BYU and BYU considered him but the Y didn't back it up with $.

2. Aside from the Urban years (best coach in college?), has a coach done better at the U in the first three years?

3. Whit's life before the U was all BYU so it is fine to mention his time in San Diego with the Y.

4. Why do U fans (10:50am) claim BYU always brings up 1984 (which no-one had in this thread until you) but have no problem bringing up 1944 basketball records?

5. Navy has not have played a defense as fast and big as Utah. They (Navy) are without a coach. Utes win fairly easy.
Countdown | 2:16 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
One more day till the yoots get rolled by Navy. I can hardly wait!! The only downer is we have to play a team that got handled at home by Air Force, a team we beat easily this season. It could get boring but at least our subs will get plenty of playing time in the 2nd half as we coast to victory by 3 td's.
Re Random Thoughts | 2:25 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
On #1, it would actually be better stated to say "both BYU and Utah offered the job to Whitt" rather than "considered" him.

But, I agree with the rest. Although I'm not as confident as you that Utah wins easily. If Utah has an achilles heel, it is defending the rush.
More random thoughts | 2:44 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Yeah, we have Bronco(loud noises, cheers, clapping sounds, marching band playing Cougar fight song in background, fans chanting We're No. 1, two stright undefeated Mtn. West Championships)

You have Coach Whitt(subdued clapping sounds, a marching band known for playing out of tune, especially Utah Man, and the moanful cries of a fan base that can beat their chest that they are still a non-champion, 8-win-team for the second year in a row and playing in the point-less Pointsetta bowl, against a team that will have more fans in the stands than you do)

Yeah we play UCLA, second time, don't want to but that wasn't our decision, that was all contractual and the Cougars didn't have anything to say about it.

But hey, we're Conference Champions. The big red isn't. May not be for some time if the last two mean anything. And big red knows it really does mean something. Blow you out like in the goood ole days or play you close, the Cougars are on the verge of breaking away from the conference and the pathetic utes will hope to play tag along when it occurs. It is not a matter of if, just when.
Meaningless Stat | 2:55 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Another meaningless bowl win for the Utes... This bowl record stat would mean something if they actually played a good team.
Bowl Game | 3:50 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
If you have a bowl game and no one is there to see it, does it really matter. I love Ute fans that state how much better their bowl game is and how much better their bowl opponent is. If that is true, why can't you get any fans at your bowl game. Why is it yewet fans that BYU can sell out their bowl and you can't. Because no one really cares!!! not you, and not anyone else. Our bowl game may not be any better as far a opponents go but at least we represent and have represented all year. Did you guys sell out LEN one time this year? I hope you don't lose another game to a service academy this year. BYU 2-0 Service academies 2-0.
Utes? | 4:05 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Well, since All but 2-3 of these posts are from cougars, it looks like they are more concerned with this lame bowl game than the Utes themselves. I'm a cougar, but I'd much rather play Navy this year than UCLA. Our big reward for a great season, a 6-6 team that we had better beat. For the sake of our conference getting any decent bowl games in the future, I hope both the Utes and cougars pull it off.

Also, I apologize for all the sterotypical cougar fans who live 30 years in the past and try and discredit anything good Utah or other teams have accomplished. Sadly, I'd say the Utes have done more in the last 10 years than we have. It's actually neat to have a BCS buster and 6-bowl win streak team. Hopefully the cougars will have something similar to boast about soon!

GO COUGARS! GO UTES!
anyonebutU | 4:29 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
GO NAVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! POOR UTES, THEY SEEM TO ABLE TO SHOW UP ON A BIG GAME, CAN'T PUT IT TOGETHER IN THEIR OWN CONFERENCE GAMES. POOF! THERE GOES ANOTHER CHANCE TO FILL THE RED SEATS. JUST ANOTHER "RED" FLASH IN THE PAN. GO NAVY! DID I SAY THAT ALREADY? GO NAVY!
reUtes | 5:57 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
"I apologize for all the sterotypical cougar fans who live 30 years in the past and try and discredit anything good Utah or other teams have accomplished."

...Would someone then apologize for the Ute Basketball fans living in the 1940's (I'm guessing that's sort of double BYU fans living 30 years in the past.)

I want Utah to win, but I also want an apology.
Re: Utes? | 6:38 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Thank You for seeing the Truth, Utah has done more for the conference over the last 10 years.
To the Rest of ALL YOU COUG FANS.
Keep Talking Smak. I For one believe in our choice for coach. 1st Game of the Season you loose your two biggest offensive weapons, half your D, Start 1-3 and finish in a bowl game. I cannot complain. Yes Bronco is consitent but how good will he be when that kind of adversity hits??? I hope you never have to find out but unfortunately in major college sports you probably will. Additionaly it came down to money as to who got Whitt. Remember coaching is a buisiness and don't forget it, eventualy if BYU does not come to the table with a good offer, Bronco will bail it is the unfortunat truth about college sport even at BYU. Besides if you really care about BYU and the conference you should cheer for the UTES just as we should Cheer for BYU. Think about the conference has put us in a bad situation BYU wins no biggie, they loose they are mediocre and the MWC does not belong. GO MWC
re:re:Utes? | 8:12 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Wow, I forgot you lost your quaterback to a 3rd degree shoulder separation. And then you went out and beat UCLA at home, BUT then were shutout at UNLV the week after by a running back named "Frank the Tank against the Utes then the nickname went away against real defenses" because you refused to tackle him and they laughed at you, but your best offensive players were hurt.

Let's see how Bronco does with adversity. Well, his quarterback also had a 3rd degree shoulder separation before they played you, didn't leak it out to anyone, put together a fantastic game plan with a defensive backfield pieced together (because of injury) and beat you Utes in the only game that matters to you and your fans.

And the quarterback that would have been in street clothes for Utah, instead picked up a 4th and 18 on the winning drive. I'll say Bronco is strong when adversity hits, Max Hall is a competitor.

I believe most cougar fans were probably upset at both Whit and Ben, and I think everyone now is very thankful for how things turn out.

The un-named-higher-being-that-does-not-favor-any-program-or-sports-affiliated-players-but-looks-out-for-Austin-Collie-and-the-BYU-cougars works in mysterious ways.
byu fan base... | 8:14 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Why do BYU fans brag about their fan base??? Going to BYU, I've realized that the only reason that half the fans show up is because they are on a date looking for the eternal companion. Seriously...if you are at LES, just look around, and half the people there don't have a clue what is going on.

Navy's game to lose | 10:11 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Only shot Utah has is to Dress Kyle and let him play defense.

A little of the cougar fire under the utes will have them off and running.
Mixed-up dad | 11:12 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
I've had kids that attended BYU, Utah, and the Naval Academy (and Utah State and Purdue and Notre Dame). Sorry, my heart for this one's on Navy, but for sentimental reasons. In another situation I'd cheer for Utah except when playing my Alma Mater down south. But hey, for me it's a win-win deal. I'll be proud of whoever wins.
NC Navy Grad | 11:37 p.m. Dec. 19, 2007
Hey "Ute gotta be kidding me", why disparage our schedule? You seem to forget that Wake Forest was the defending ACC Champion. Is Utah a defending MWC Champion? Nope. Rutgers came of a 10 win season and highest ranking in team history. North Texas was on our schedule as a replacement for UConn because UConn backed out of their contract to play us after we embarrassed them on their home field last season 41-17. You may note that UConn was highly ranked for a good portion of this season. Pitt is no slouch either. We beat Pitt in 2OT's. Please note that they knocked off #2 West Virginia. This year Boston College was very strong in the rankings. Perhaps you read that BC's last game last season was against Navy in the Meineke Car Care Bowl, and squeaked out a last second field goal to win 25-24 with no time on the clock. Navy set an unprecedented record by leading the NCAA 1-A in rushing 3 years in a row, yet every Ute and BYU fan completely dismisses Navy like an annoying gnat. Yes, we're not the nation's powerhouse, and we aren't very talented, but we have heart of champions.
? | 5:54 a.m. Dec. 20, 2007
It still bugs me that Whitt called the win vs. BYU the biggest win he's ever been apart of when CLEARLY that game vs. SMU was far greater. No one can say they've been part of any better game than that...down by 20 with 5 minutes left, and winning? Unheard of.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, Navy will run all over them. utah was bad vs AF, BYU, and the UNLV SHUTOUT and those teams ran all over them...they couldn't even stop their rival, what makes anyone think they'll stop the #1 rushing team in America. GO NAVY!!! Blow them out of the water!!!
BYU | 9:46 a.m. Dec. 20, 2007
If Max Hall had this so called 3rd degree shoulder separation, there is no way he could have played...don't even try...

"re:re:Utes?" is one of the guys at LES that doesn't know anything that is going on...

Bronco has had no adversity whatsoever, unless you count the INT's returned for touchdowns and fumbles against UCLA the first time they played...He will though, and thats when we will see what kind of coach he really is...
