Is it too much to ask people to obey the laws of this country? How can we expect people to respect our laws when the first act as a new resident of this country is to break the law by entering illegally? Something has to be done to restore order to the immigration policy in this country. Romney at least is championing the issue and has a plan to restore order to the border.

Actually I don't think Romney goes far enough in dealing with illeagl immigrants. The only candidate that comes close to the way I think is Rudi Juliani. I think they should all be arrested and forcibly sent back to their country of origin. I also believe that a wall should be built to keep illeagl immigrants from Mexico from comming into the U.S. and that we should establish a border patrol to deal with illeagle immigrants trying to enter this country.

They don't deserve to be able to drive or go to school in this country as long as they are here illegally. They shouldn't have any constitutional rights at all if they are here illeagally. I also believe that English should be the OFFICIAL language of the U.S. Illeagl immigrants DO NOT belong in this country. I know this country was founded by immigrants.

It seems that Hispanics must have missed a few civics lessons. Why is it that they are so quick to take offense and portray this in racial terms when someone suggests that immigration laws need to be enforced? Do they believe that their minority status or skin color gives them some special privilege to ignore the immigration, identity theft and other laws?

Reading between the lines, this cleric must receive a lot of contributions from illegal members of his flock. Perhaps he missed the biblical theology lectures about seeking filthy lucre or obeying civic laws (rendering unto Ceasar)?

I remember conversing with Tony Yapias a few years ago when he has the Hispanic affairs director about him not knowing the character of every illegal immigrant coming into the country, and how could he support them in such a blanket manner.

It's been about 5 years now and just in Utah we've had several children raped, dozens of people murdered or maimed and countless others robbed or otherwise affected by illegal aliens. It seems that every day there is another shooting or stabbing along the Wasatch front, usually tied to illegals/gangs.

If Latin American people want to hear from someone who has compassion for immigrants don't expect to get it from Mitt Romney or Gordon B. Hinckley. Expect to hear it from Salt Lake City Catholic Bishop Rev. John C. Wester. Maybe Hinckley and Romney can learn a thing or two from Bishop Wester. It doesn't surprise me that Mitt served his mission in France where "hooliganism" runs rampant at soccer games and people with dark skin are looked down upon. What people don't understand is that Illegal immigration has become a racist issue. You don't see light-skinned immigrants being targeted with suspicion but if you see someone sweating profusely while doing yardwork or working at a fast food restaraunt or as Mitt Romney would put it..."someone with a funny accent" you so quickly question their legality. People say "we need to secure our BORDERS (plural). Let's build a wall along the Mexican BORDER(singular). The least we could do is have compassion for the children of illegal immigrants. We so quickly throw parties for Russian orphans as we post pictures of them on our newspaper's front covers. Please have mercy on the Mexican Children. "Mexican" does NOT equate to "Illegal."

The illegal population should fear deportation and border control, it's only our right as a nation. It's our right as a nation to also force the illegals out of this country by deportation or of their own voluntary removal back to their home country. To stand up and say the illegal population deserves anything less is treasonous to america. Illegal aliens in this country is an economic disaster to americans and they are finally waking up to this fact. The biggest problem for america is that the democrates basicly rely on the illegals as an illegal labor force in their personally owned businesses and could care less about the american people and job security for americans. As a descendent of immigrants (1850's), I have always, and still do, think immigration is important to our country. I have some good friends who are Hispanic. I have no problem with Hispanics, or for that matter, any other ethnic group coming to our country. People need to be able to come here to have better opportunities, for asylum, to help power our nation, to unite with their families. That being said, the laws of this nation need to be followed and people should not be allowed to enter illegally. I can't just not pay my taxes, for example, because I think the law is bad. If we have too few legal immigrants for the needs of our country and for various compassionate reasons that we as a people believe in, then change the limits! Since 9/11 it is clear we need to have control of our borders for the safety of us all.

I agree with the former comment. Well said. Why is it so difficult for the Hispanic community to require accountability of their people? This is not about race. I have many hispanic friends, and I welcome their integrity in their desire to be legal citizens of this country. They are hard-working people no doubt, and I do not want to deprive them of any freedoms, but they don't get to TAKE them, they have to earn them. I want a President who is going to take a hard stand on the issue to require that accountability. We can't turn away from the issue, or we just open the space to breed the idea that illegal immigration is OK, and if they get away with that, doing anything illegal is ok.

Everyone wants and needs cheap labor, in every state, but they complain about the illegals. I feel they should quickly and strongly kick out the gang members, criminals, etc, but leave the others alone, who are trying to build better lives for themselves and their families. They do pay some taxes, but they also abuse the medical system, usually going to emergency rooms, which are vastly more expensive than a regular doctor's office. What is ironic, is the LDS (mormons) actually believe that south america plays a huge part of their cult sect faith, yet Mitt holds this public view, just to get the registered U.S. citizens republican conservative vote.

Try Section 103.2(b)(10)(ii) - My wife is from Peru and we've had to fill out an I-864 twice already. Then the USCIS asked for more evidence that we have to get in and this is the third time. Up to this point I have complied with all immigration "laws" - I'd submit, however, regardless of all things else that these "laws" need to be re-written (or ommitted) because some of them complicate otherwise simple proceedures and bog down otherwise simple solutions with entirely overwhelming rhetoric. I'm a US Citizen (born and raised in Utah), but I've had difficulties with the stuff. From a person's standpoint who wants to be here legally etc., the process basically puts them through hell and them leaves them there because it drowns them with extraneous requirments and complicated legalities that are entirely un-approachable, and un-realistic. I'm for legal when legal is written straight forward and doesn't overwhelm in ways that King George would've. I've met Mitt Romney personally, and he does put off a hard-line edge to immigration that I don't know that he fully understands. "The Law" as it's currently written is not honest, or just.

How can you blame Romney for the anti-immigration. He is just pointing out his stance and pointing out the differences between him and his opponents. If it weren't something the American people agreed with, then all the candidates would distance themselves from Romney's stance. Instead, the majority of the country is worried about it, so all the candidates are following Romney's lead. It's just more proof that something needs to be done.

To John: I like your analogy to the traffic ticket, because overstaying your visa is about the equivalent to driving 10 mph over the speed limit. So, let's (1) banish people to a foreign country--one where they haven't lived for years, where they have no family/friends/connections anymore--and (2) forbid them from re-entering the U.S. for 10 years. That sounds like proportional punishment to me. Like doing 10 years for a speeding ticket.

How do I take laws seriously that don't take me seriously? How do I honor a law that scrutinizes me and slows my progress down? How do I honor laws that divide families and burden a free economy? - The United States of America was founded by a relatively small group of very wise individuals who escaped, and fought for freedom from a monarchy where the pursuit of happiness had been darkened by tyranny and corruption. We in the U.S. tend to see Europe as some kind of authority in regards to the land our ancestors obtained and that we now call The United States. It goes without saying that the Hopi and the Ute and the Navajo and the Sioux and the Cheyenne and the Inca and the Maya and the Blackfoot and all the rest of em' were here long before us. 'We the people' were immigrants from Europe and are descendents of the same. Politics altogether in these times are more brutal than they are kind.

No one has the, "Right," to violate the law. We, as a nation are enabling the Latino. We provide free social and medical services, jobs and do it in Spanish. Spanish is a beautiful language, but it is not the language of this country. No other country in the world would accept a 20 million person invasion, then provide services in their native language. If you go to any foreign country and expect the same type of enabling we provide, it will not happen.. Mexico has a "Zero tolerance," toward illegal immigration, yet they expect the U.S. to open its boarders, Illegal means, "in violation of the law." I just want to say that I hope a Republican candidate wins for the simple reason that they have all promised to do something about the problem of illegal immigration. If you think that is harsh so be it. I wish the Mexican community would explain how it is fair to rest of us to have to pick up the price for health care, education and so on. Well of course Romney's views "definitely don't go along with Hispanics." And why? Because Hispanics as a whole, particularly Mexicans, have an utter disdain and disrespect for the laws, culture, and sovereignty of the United States of America, that's why.

It is a disdain and disrespect borne of an inferior value system and also an enmity toward the United States.

This enmity falsely claims, for example, that several of the western United States (including California and Utah) actually belong to Mexico ("Aztlan"), and advocates an invasion and conquest of these states. This is why, at the massive demonstrations which took place last year in the streets of Salt Lake City, I myself witnessed shouts -- off news-media cameras, of course -- among the illegal Mexican trespassers and legal residents of Mexican extraction (who by and large have an utter disloyalty to this country), of "Viva la Reconquista!"

Change the laws that if an illegal comes over the border and his wife gives birth in the USA, that child is NOT automatically an American citizen. If the parents aren't, then the child isn't and all three should be sent back from whence they came. I am sick and tired of our state and federal representatives bending over backwards to NOT upset the illegal contingents in order to gain the votes of the latino votes. It is sad that these individuals think nothing of raising the Mexican flag in our country to celebrate Cinco de Mayo. How distasteful it is. Where is their allegiance to the USA? What is even more deplorable is the fact that my son's science text book (8th grade) has a glossary of scientific definitions not only in English but in Spanish!

The Rev. Luis Cortes tells it like it is. It's not what Utahns want to hear but it's true with one minor exception. It's really been Colorado Rep. Tom Tancredo who has been beating this drum so loudly that he got the Mittster and others to realize that to win their primaries, they need to heat up their rhetoric. The Mittster, ever the follower he is, quickly finds the parade he can get in front of. You never know what you'll get with him: maybe he just says this to get past the primary. But Rev. Cortes is correct in saying the rhetoric has a tremendous impact on all Hispanics and Latinos including those of us born here for generations and those recent arrivals, legal or not. We're concerned with this impact on the legal Hispanics/Latinos but also demand the same humanitarian sympathies Utah's provide for "illegal polygamists" and their illegal children! Romney deserves to lost the Hispanic/Latino vote!

Talk to any school teacher about the added burden Hispanics create in their classrooms. They attend small ESL classes which artificially lower the per class average. They have their own social problems. It is profoundly selfish of Hispanics not to take a broader view of the needs of our country and to elect the candidate that can best address all those needs. This hispanic leader is selective in what he wants to hear and how he wants to interpret it. If I were to go to Mexico by sneaking across the border I would be in jail, period, no talk about legality or wanting to do something to better myself.

I think those favoring sanctuary for only Mexicans and not including the rest of Latin America and a few hundred million Indians, and not so few hundred million Chinese and every Sudanese living south of Kosti are a bunch of racist, anti-Christian, uncompassionate individuals. Also, we should keep our promise to those 25 million Filipinos (of the 80 million total) who are still holding out hope that they will become the 51st state. Truly we should open our borders to the whole world where people are oppressed and live in poverty. We can accomplish this by merely sending several tens of thousands of Queen Marys to provide transportation for them. Let's put this plan in place ASAP. Write to Senator Kennedy and get him started on it in the next session of Congress. Or instead of spending $1200 on Christmas this year, send $1200 to Save the Children, Doctors without Borders or some other international relief agency.

I just want to clarify that I'm for legal immigration and that's why my wife and I have complied with the law. Those in this country who are illegal and who compete with our North American workforce, I would submit that you need to get legal, or find a better life in Mexico. Take what you've learned here and go back to your country and make it better. That is one thing that is so much easier said than done - regardless, nobody lives without trials - we can have scapegoats in all this - a major scapegoat as I see it is myths that are believed in, and that come from an older Europe. Spain and Northern Europe are the ancestors at issue here as much as anything else. There are elements of Latino law that don't, and never should jive here. Graffiti, noise pollution, divorce and infidelity, fathers not being held accountable etc. - The U.S. has benefited from the enforcement of these laws and I don't want any of those things as contagions in North America. If you're illegal, I wish you my best, but advise you to 'get your own house in order'.

Ahh, the illegal question just won't go away.

I have a plan.

1. Pull the military home from all foreign countries and waters.
2. Stage our troops and naval forces in our home ports and bases and prepare for a major offensive close to home. Place a carrier group off San Diego and one in the Gulf of Mexico.
3. Pres Bush sends Pres Calderon an ultimatum with a diplomatic contingent demanding that the Mexican Government and the Mexican people surrender to the United States.
4. All of the Mexican Federal Police are fired and replaced by US MP's until new "clean" police can be trained and hired.
5. Launch investigations and hold trials for those of the previous governement (including federal policemen) who broke Mexican law.

In one day the United States could have access to all of Mexico's natural resources and the "illegal" question goes away.

And who would stand in our way? Cuba?

Then Canada would be next...

For some reason we have a lot of people that seem to think that any of the over 8 billion people in the world that want to come to the United States have a perfect right to do so. Cubans for example only have to get their feet on dry land. The right to say who enters and who stays belongs to the people of the United States through their government. This is one of the definitions of a sovereign nation. Presently about 75% want illegal immigration stopped. Seldom do 75% of Americans agree on anything.

To say that the United States doesn't have the right to determine who enters and who can say is like telling the homeowner that he can't stop anyone he wishes from entering his home, or he can't ask visitors to leave. Nations have that same right. The United States presently has about twenty million party crashers that need to leave.

To the other Lee - I'm sorry that the invasion of millions of Hispanic illegals is making people question your status. If the legal Hispanic community would be more vocal about their opposition to illegal immigraion, instead of turning it into some sort of racial/civil rights cause, it would help.

Unfortunately, many legal Hispanics have close or distant relatives who are illegal, and tend to want to support them.

All we could ask for is for the Attorney General to show as much enthusiasm for going after illegals, as he has shown towards prosecuting polygamists.

Instead he gets up in front of a group of illegals and tells them he can't arrest them and then jumps around shouting "sï¿½, se puede" multiple times. In an inteview with Mundo Hispano, he indicated that he feels more aligned with the culture of Mexico than the United States.

There's also some good commentary on yesterday's story about immigration and its related issues. In that story it was brought up that Mitt Romney's great great grandpa, Miles Romney, who was born in Nauvoo in 1843, came into "Mexican" territory as a young child because his parents, who would also be in Mitt's family tree. They all came with Brigham and the other Early Mormon pioneers to escape the horrible attrocities committed by the THEN mid 1800's USA.

We should show some mercy and MAKE LAWS and RULES
that are FAIR to all of God's children.

Someone posted how we as US citizens earned our right to be citizens.
My ancestors came here from Scandinavian Countries. They got meager jobs AND they all learned English. When they learned English they found better paying jobs. It took less than 6 months to learn English because they wanted to be citizens of the USA. English was spoken in their homes. Their children learned English as a first language and the Scandinavian languages second. They wanted a NEW life. If the ï¿½Mexican-Americansï¿½ would become legal citizens of the USA and not attempt to take back Northern Mexico, I am sure they would be as welcome as my ancestors. I donï¿½t see Canada allowing USA citizens across their border so they can have free heath care. They have a VERY high tax base in Canada to provide ï¿½freeï¿½ medical care. I pay taxes here and so should all the workers. I pay for medical care with my wages. If I donï¿½t have enough money, I go without or I WORK harder and longer.

Having good laws to live by in any country helps keep all crime down. People need a good government and laws to keep order, or otherwise countries become corrupt with crime and murder. God sets rules for us to live by here on earth, but we still need intelligent people down here who can set good standards for all to live by. People don't do well without set standards and laws. Our America would become very wicked and evil without laws and a good government. None of us would be safe without good leaders.

I Think that Mitt Romney is a highly intelligent man and he would do very well as President of the USA.

Good luck Mr Romney. Our country needs you.

The children of Mexican Nationals born here in the US are possibly citizens. If they are citizens and want to stay they can, but send the illegal parents home. Just because you have a child in a country shouldnï¿½t equal the right for any/all of the family to stay. I know a man born ï¿½in Germanyï¿½ he was flying over German air space when he was born. He has visited Germany. He is a US citizen.

The children of polygamists are not doing anything illegal. Their parents are citizens and if they break the law we have the ability to send them to a correctional facility.
