Comments about ‘Backing seen for abstinence education’

I'm so glad I grew up when I did, as a child of the 50's when abstinence was the norm. We didn't think twice about it, since this was taught in our homes, in church, as well as school. It remember "the special meeting" we girls had with our mothers and teachers when we were in the 6th grade. We learned about maturation and all that entails, including abstinence from sex until married. I have tried to teach that to my children, and most of them have followed it. We didn't have sex education, per se, in schools in the 50's and 60's, other than a little bit mentioned in an health class. That education was left up to our parents, who struggled with it, as they were children of the 20's and 30's, when people were not as open in speaking about personal matters. Sex education, properly done with good morale standards included, can be a good thing. It may be the only instruction about it that some kids will get. Lack of abstinence has given us an increase in STD's, AIDS, unwanted pregnancies, and many other problems. Time for a change in educational thinking, I believe.

The Trib has an opinion piece showing how abstinence only is failing miserably in Utah.

Churches and schools have teachers, rooms, etc. I see it as a disgrace that organizations take millions to teach abstinence when there are so many poor people who go to bed hungry or sick.

If they could not get the big money they would not teach abstinence. SAD!!!

By the way, I am over 65 years old and I was taught sex education in school, but my parents values were what kept me from experimenting with premarital sex.

I blame the high pregnacy rate on the mormons and the Bush administration.

The media/entertainment industry is where the real sex education is happening. As long as our media/entertainment industry keeps feeding our children a stead diet of content glorifying fast and loose sexual behavior with no consequences, the aftermath of SID's, abortion and out of wedlock children will continue to climb.
