A Liberal Morman (LDS) | 3:14 p.m. April 19, 2008
The point is mute now, but I don't think Mr. Romney ever had a chance--this, based solely on the fact that he is LDS. No candidate strapped with the "mormon" label ever will. No matter if he is active in his faith, inactive, ex-, married to one, whatever. It won't matter. If the media can get any chance to apply the label, the candidate will automatically be defeated. Strong anti-LDS bias within the "christian" evangelical community does exist! The evidence in the article above supports that and my personal experience does as well. Lay "christians" are less militant in their opposition to a mormon candidate than their leaders would be, but they would never vote for a polical candidate while their pastor is screaming something similar to "kill the SOB" over the pulpet. I would call for voters generally to rise above this kind of prejudice. But I don't know if our society has progressed to that level yet. The irony in this is that the candidate may represent most of their interests if they could somehow base their judgment on the political issues and filter out the automatic emotionalism involved with the label "mormon".
