I would call the Roman Catholic Inqusitions in France, Spain, and elsewhere in the 12th and 13th centuries "an abomination."
Joseph F. Smith, sixth president of the LDS Church, wrote in Gospel Doctrine, p. 403:
Now, these are the commandments of God, the principles contained in these commandments of the great Eternal are the principles that underly the Constitution of our country, and all just laws. Joseph Smith, the prophet, was inspired to affirm and ratify this truth, and he further predicted that the time would come, when the Constitution of our country would hang as it were by a thread, and that the Latter-day Saints, above all other people in the world, would come to the rescue of that great and glorious palladium of our liberty...
People responsible for those Inquisitions were a small extremist splinter group of Neocons of the day.
If your logic is correct, then Mark Hacking is an abomination that gives Mormonism a bad name.
But when it comes down to it, the LDS church's orgin comes from Joseph Smith (and nothing else).
Smith was either telling the truth or was a liar.
The original Christian church has a much more proven history and substance than some hearsay.
Maybe you are just hung up on the 80 million part.
But if one keeps baptizing dead people, LDS numbers will surely grow.
