I think that taxpayer dollars should be aimed at improving the students welfare more than rewarding educators for doing what they were hired to do! I find it very fustrating to hear about how larger the class sizes are yet, money that could help hire more staff is reduced to being tokens at Christmas! Hopefully the teacher's union won't require a cut of their bonus!

the gov't will take a nice cut.

A friend of mine in Provo district got his and it was $650 after everything was taken out.

He still was happy to get it....

He said it was better than the turkey they usually get!

My wife is a school teacher with over 15 years in the Jordan School District, She got $80 / month out of the $2500. It is a sorry state all around when the elite in our society have difficulty adding things up at so many levels. Who will save us from all these incompetancy ? and what happened to the dollars that would have gone into vouchers ? Are they sacred to that mob such that they cannot be used in public education ? Are we living in a communist state where some pigs are more equal ?

Your comments are on point. There is no accountablity when the "boss" makes critical mistakes. Just another form of bullying and intimidation by our legislature and school administrators (Oops we counted wrong...sorry). They want teachers to sweat everyday and make them feel that they are sooooo lucky to have a job in the classroom. It is a miserable and unhealthy way of life and if your looking to do it as future "job"(not career) change your major quickly and hire on at Mickey D's. You'll be happier, make more $$$$ and get to see your family more because you only have to work one job!

How much of the $1000 are Granite teachers going to get? I hear it is much less the $1000. It is so nice to know that the Granite Administration can make mistakes and it is the teachers that have to pay the price.

The state board made the mistake, not the legislature. The article isn't correct.

The ammount that Granite teachers will receive on their December pay check is $972.

At least part of the error in calculcating $1,000 per teacher was the fact that school districts, like all other employers, pay part of the payroll taxes before the money goes to the employee's check.

Then the teachers must keep in mind that the $972 is before THEIR taxes are deducted (federal, state, FICA, and other personal deducations like 401K percentages).

I heard GEA come out with a much lower number than 972. It will be interesting to see how much money the teachers actually get for their $1000 bonus.

Jordan District Teachers were all informed today that they would be getting $805 BEFORE taxes. And we DID NOT receive the full $2500 raise.

My bonus is going to pay for half of my recent dental work. Thats' right peeps one-half. So much for Christmas! The public has no idea what teachers are up against in this state. They will never be paid a decent wage and guess what in the next ten years class sizes are projected to keep growing. Teachers jump for joy for an extra eighty dollars per month. Which by the way only rolls aroung once every twenty years or so (same for the less than $1,000 bonus). Now that's keeping up with the cost of living! Thinking about teaching...think again.
