I say hold Nevada's feet to the fire and recover damages. Apparently they were afraid to take on BYU substituting Grambling for BYU is hardly a step forward in their scheduling.
... You gave us a chance to replace you with a better team! If Florida State's still open... call them up! What are y'all waiting for? Play up, not down, when at all possible.
Eastern Washington, OK, understandable as a last-minute fill-in. There weren't many options. And if FSU doesn't agree, whatever, there might not be this time, either. But look long and hard! And NO, repeat, NO scheduling wimpy teams just for wins! The people whose votes count in the BCS formula can see right through that.
If BYU did that, they would still struggle to rise in the BCS standings, like Hawaii has this year. They'd be faced with the sense they don't belong, like the Warriors are. And BYU would be embarrassed once they actually played the BCS game. Like Hawaii will, if they get there.
Bronco, I sincerely hope your comments were taken out of context. If you really do think the MWC and Cougars should start caving in to the soft-schedule strategy, I'm deeply, deeply disappointed. Character and "living right" (yikes!) aren't about wins and losses. It's about doing your best against quality competition. Right? Right?
Please don't talk about Hawaii playing an easy schedule when Byu played the likes Eastern Washington Community High School. Seriously, who did Byu play in their non-conference schedule? UCLA (loss), Tulsa (loss). If Byu starts winning some of thier non-conference games then lets have this little chat. And for what its worth, I've heard people ripping on last years Boise State team saying they didn't play anybody and got into a BCS game. Well, they also won it. So go ahead Byu, dumb down your schedule and get into a BCS game but remember, if you get it handed to you, your only going to look like a joke. Also, the fact that you play your games on a network that nobody gets probably doesn't do much to help you get much national recognition.
Sounds like Nevada is now the Chicken Pack. Does this support the WAC's assertion that it is better than the MWC? So much better they have to shun facing real challenges in favor of feather weights? With some talk of MWC expansion, the fact is that there is not a team in the WAC that wouldn't jump at the chance for the MWC. But while Nevada may have been on that short list with Hawaii, Boise, and Fresno, I would think this guarantees them the chance to stay in a mediocre, worthless conference.
Sounds like Nevada is now the Chicken Pack...
They have Texas Tech and Missouri??? Those are two of the best teams in the Big12. Plus, the UNLV game is a rivalry game, and those are crazy intense. You can't criticize Nevada's schedule at all, and they are definitely not trying to take the "Hawaii route" with a schedule like that. Sometimes these things happen. I'm sure BYU-Provo with recover.
Besides, why would they schedule a team that will fill their stadium with fans rooting against them?
Finally, Grambling's band IS amazing.
Can we please stop with all the "schedule light to pile up the wins" talk. This is a freak year. Normally there are a bunch of 1 loss BCS teams. A Mountain West team with no losses and no significant wins will never jump a bunch of BCS teams with only 1 loss. Fair or not, that's just how it is. This is a fluke year. Hawaii is barely even in the BCS. Let's not get all excited and change what we know to usually be true about scheduling because of a fluke.
I know they stiffed BYU on the schedule but Holmoe needs step into the next century and call them the University of Nevada. They haven't been Nevada-Reno for sometime.
Jimmy agrees with Gary, follow the Hawaii model to regain national credibility and guaranteed BCS money. Then once reputation and recruiting is up BYU could look again to scheduling the traditonal football powerhouses such as Tulsa and Eastern Washington. ;-0
Hawaii might have played lesser opponents this year, but it happened the same way Nevada is stiffing BYU. Hawaii was scheduled to play at Michigan to open the season, but was dropped for Appalachian St...and Michigan St. was scheduled to travel to the Islands and play, but got out of that. This is why Hawaii had 2 D-IAA teams scheduled. If your going to criticize, at least report all of the facts. Hawaii played the schedule that was handed to them and have won every game.
This is where we see how idealistic and principled Mendenhall really is - is this about making the most money? or is this about fielding the best team possible and playing the best opponents possible regardless of whether or not it results in a BCS berth?
Was the game with Nevada the return game from when the Cougars played at Nevada under Crowton? As a Cougar fan I am hoping the Cougs find a worthy opponent, not some cupcake just for the sake of getting an easy win.
Payback is tough isn't it BYU?
Like the time You backed out of Games with USU in Football and Basketball! Now you want monetary compensation? Maybe USU should ask you for Monetary compensation for not playing us in Football or Basketball? I wouldn't be surprised if BYU now tries to back out of its Game with USU in Logan next year! A game that you know you will win, so why not do what your buddy Nevada did? Wouldn't be surprised if it happens! Dave Rose are you listening! You probably could have had an easy win against us Aggies this year. But because JC was such an embarrassement to you to lose in recruiting, you just had to save face didn't you! !
Does it seem to anyone else that it really may be in the best interest of SDSU to kind of throw the game? Almost nobody who has a say in any poll will see the game, they will only see the numbers. So if they see BYU with 70+ points and 700ish yards compared to under 200 yards and less than 10 points for SDSU it will look pretty impressive (these are just outlandish hypothetical numbers). The reason this would be beneficial to SDSU is the fact that their season is over, and BYUs is not. And even while it is a long shot for BYU to break into a BCS game, such a win over SDSU would surely help their case. This helps SDSU because a BCS bowl game pays more money than the Las Vegas Bowl, and while our conference shares bowl spoils, SDSU would reap more money if BYU goes to a BCS Bowl. So the only question we need to ask, is which is more valuable to SDSU, a hard fought loss (or maybe a win) in a losing season? Or taking a gamble on receiving a lot more money for your football program?
The Tigers may be the defending champs. Nevada's schedule is anything but soft next year.
Thanks hawaii and the BCS. Your schedule strength which is worse then some D2 schools, has officially set the bar for things to come for all schools. Hope the BCS enjoys the mess it made!
Why are people acting like BYU is good enough to play in BCS game? There not and they wont ever be good enough...i dont think Hawaii is good enough either.
I read it straight up. We schedule quality opponents. We can't way to play Grambling they have a great band. Dumb comment. We need better non-conference games since the conference isn't producing quality.
Excuse me, but it seems to have been left out that the Nevada game was supposed to be a few years ago, but it was BYU that backed out of the game and moved it to 2008. Why is it OK for BYU to push the game back, but its not for Nevada?
The name of the school is still the University of Nevada, Reno. You need to step ou of you dreams and into reality.
