The MWC is contracted to some weak bowls. Not to mention the horrible tv contract with the MTN, etc. Who is making these deals representing the MWC? They need to be shown the door. Having a conference champion play another conference's #5 team is a disgrace and shows where the MWC stands. Until you can get your #1 playing some other conference's #1, you'll never get any respect.
What a beautifully convoluted mess this could turn out to be! The more chaos the better!
How many paragraphs would it take to map out the MWC teams in a playoff bracket? (But then we wouldn't have the suspense or drama of watching half the teams in college football go to a bowl game because they won 6 games during mediocre seasons.) ...Good thing we have the BCS, otherwise we might actually pick a legitimate national champion. Good thing we have the money of tv deals and bowl payouts, otherwise we might see some good college football every 5 years.
Zero percent chance of a BCS invite, but please no Ball State! The Las Vegas bowl is alreay insignificant enough without adding a MAC team.
Would love to match up against Boise State, however.
Just keep the BCS hands off the Las Vegas Bowl as long as you can! Eventually, the BCS will take over the LV bowl when someboby wakes up and expands the stadium. If the stadium seated, 60,000 it could be one of top 5 or 6 bowls.
jimmy thinks the fans would much prefer a BYU vs. Boise State matchup as opposed to a BYU vs. UCLA rematch. Make it happen MWC.
In order for BYU to get into the BCS, all of the above, plus if it is a full moon, on a thursday, and the voters get real drunk... oh yeah, and if Marie Osmond wins Dancing with the Stars... SHOOT, she lost, so I guess they are in the LV Bowl... against Boise? What has to happen again for that to happen? The Idaho Senator has to step down after the bathroom incident? Whatever. Wake me when you figure it out.
Unfortunately for BYU, Hawaii will not lose to Washington, so the gate is shut. BYU can't complain. They should have beaten Tulsa. You can't lose to Tulsa and expect BCS.
I would watch a mwc champ play the WAC No. 2 over a game with the pac 10 No. 4 or 5 any day of the week.
How crazy would it be if a non-bcs team (BYU), who does not deserve a BCS bid actually gets to play in a BCS bowl. That would really make lots of people mad at the BCS system. Maybe we would see a change when the system hurts the BCS conferences.
Great article. Thanks for bringing into focus a very muddy and convoluted Bowl selection process. While the race for Bowl bids is clear as mud, what remains fully transparent is the abject failure and inequity of the BCS system.
A Boise State BYU match up would be great! I would much rather see a ranked Boise State team than an unranked PAC 10 team that doesnt want to be there.
Boise State has a quality program and as a cougar fan in Idaho it would be a great season to be able to beat the donkeys and yewets in the same season!
Hawaii will lose to Washington. They are in for a surprise, mark my words. The Huskies will bring out the purple in Hawaii's rainbow, and Colt Brennan will be moving more like Walter after they're done with him.
Scenario 1: BYU is guranteed a BCS spot if the following scenario happens: UCLA beats USC and Arizona beats Arizona St. Why you ask? This scenario would make UCLA the Pac-10 Champs, and since BYU would be ranked higher than them, they would by rule be placed in a BCS game.
Scenario 2: is a jumble of things that would cause the BCS to select BYU at large. Hope for any or all of the following to happen:
Hawaii loses to Washington
Boston College loses to Virginia Tech
Arizona St. loses to Arizona
Tennesse loses to LSU
Oregon loses to Oregon St.
If many or all of these happen and the BCS will have to choose 2 teams from Boston College(10-3),Illinois(9-3), Clemson(9-3), BYU (10-2), Arizona St.(9-3 with assumed loss) and Hawaii (11-1 assuming a loss to Washington) BYU may jump a spot just by virtue of a win over San Diego, and obviously as many as many (maybe) as 7 spots if the entire above scenario comes to fruition.
Assuming Scenario 1 does not happen, the true keystone of Scenario 2 is Hawaii losing simply because no one wants to see 2 non BCS schools. GO WASHINGTON!!
Even if BYU would only have one lose this year, Hawaii would have to be ranked lower than BYU. I don't think that would have happened. It would be great if the Las Vegas bowl made it so if the Pac-10 could not give them the 4th place team, the bowl could find someone else. Like the Wac champ.
I'd go for Boise State. aNext ebsdt thing is Oregon State, which did beat the team up north. But alas, Vegas is already sold out. They really need to expand that thing. I envy Utah going to San Diego, but do not underestimate Navy. They can score from anywhere on the field.
The Las Vegas Bowl is meaningless. The Cougar losses to Tulsa and UCLA cost the MWC/BYU megabucks. BYU should have gone undefeated! I like the Wetzle (on Yahoo) plan which has a real playoff system with 16 teams. BYU would be slated to play Georgia. I can't believe all the meaningless bowl games! The country is college football nuts. Under the present circumstances, I agree....let's have a BYU/Boise State matchup in the Las Vegas Bowl. BYU will blitz the San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday.....trust me!!
Great Idea... Why doesn't the "Y", work with some schools to form a new Conference and get out of the Mountain West and their stupid TV Network Deal which gives BYU nor any other MWC school any exposure! Here is a thought. BYU, Utah, Boise State, Hawaii, TCU, and New Mexico are 6 solid football programs. Add to that, Utah State, Idaho, Nevada, UNLV, Wyoming, and Air Force. Divide into two Divisions and have a Championship Game at the end of the Season. Also get a Network Deal with NATIONAL EXPOSER! Work out a deal to be a BCS Bowl Conference. To expand to 14 you could also add New Mexico State which has really built their program the past few years, and include Colorado State. The main thing is GET RID OF THE STUPID MOUNTAIN WEST NETWORK, It keeps us out of national games on television and highlights aren't even shown on ESPN! That is really sad!
Hawaii will win. BYU can only blame themselves and their lack of preparation against Tulsa for not being in a better BCS position. The best possible matchup in Vegas would be against BSU. The WAC has kicked the MWC tail in the national reputation race and this would be a chance for us to turn that a bit and set ourselves up for a great run next season. Think about this - if BYU wins the next two and ends up ranked say around #15, they will certainly be ranked in the top 20 at the start of next season returning their entire offense virtually intact. Then for once our BCS hopes truly will be in our own hands.
Truth is BYU does not deserve a BCS bid.
Truth is that BYU does deserve to play someone better than a 5th place overrated PAC 10 team.
UTAH deserves to play someone better than the NAVY, but at least NAVY is a name brand.
NEW MEXICO deserves better than to play a 500 WAC team such as Nevada or LA TECH.
TCU deserved better than last years pick as well.
AF probley will get the best match up if a PAC 10 teams does not go to the Armed Forces bowl.
And finally, The MWC needs to get off it's buttocks and schedule some better bowl participants in our bowl games.
Truth is. BYU, UTAH , AF ,New Mexico and TCU deserve better.
GO MWC!!
