I've found myself wearing a tie even when the standard around the office is *not* to wear ties ever. I don't particularly like them, but I've found my experience to be that you *are* treated more favorably if you dress up just a bit.

I'm with you. I hate ties.

Now I'll tell people I'm not wearing ties because I want to appear more "fun".

I'll say it in monotone with a frown and use the air quote signs when I say it too.
