Apparently, someone at Deseret News doesn't know that Buffalos are extinct. They're bison not buffalos.

Well since you tried to be a smart alec I might as well give it a shot and I think your wrong. A language is established when a word conjures up some sort of meaning. To some a mouse might be a part to a computer and to others it might be a small fury animal. Does that mean that either definition is wrong? In this case the word buffalo conjures up the thought of a Bison to most Utahns and so the words become interchangable, and I am 99% sure buffalo are not extinct.

American Bisons are commonly know as American Buffalo, even though they are not related to other water buffalo or the African buffalo.

But nothing worth insulting somebody over. And, the animal the original poster was thinking about is probably the American Bison, which is not extinct. (We have never really had true Buffalo here in America).
