School board members should be chosen and elected by the voters, not the governor. They should not be affiliated with any political party with party or busines influence. It should be completely party free election and the members should reside in the districts they represent. Also they should be held accountable with no indemnification. No elected official should not have indemnification while in office, this is why our state governments and city governments are so corrupted and prone to fraudlent actions by elected officials. School board members have billions of dollars at their disposal and the law says they must be elected. If the governor chooses who can be elected only perpetrates the on going corruption and control of these positions. Education is not a political party domain to be controlled by PAC's and lobyist, they should remain party and politics free officials. Term of office should also be requlated and not a lifer position and salary regulated as an employee of the state, not a CEO position. If voters chose who represented their districts then accounabliity would be an ominous force that would put more money to where tax funds should be going.
Choice voting uses the single transferable vote method of proportional representation to create a closer fit between voter preferences and electoral outcomes.
Choice voting could be used to elect members to a more representative state school board in a partisan or nonpartisan way.
school boards are already so political they should be voted on, adding another layer of being responsible to the people for that they do. No more hiding behind their superior education or inside information. Being responsible to the voters could have a great impact on improving our schools.
Voting for state school board members is fine, provided the Republicans don't get their claws into the process. For all school board elections (state and district), the elections must remain non-partisan.
Choice voting allows little-known and lightly-supported third parties to have an advantage. That's why San Francisco implemented it, and what a mess that became this last election (check the news).
Ross, the trouble is our current group of politicians are so in trenched that they feel no responsiblity to the people now, i.e. the voucher debacle and the vote against it.
You think running them through the process that brought us the folks the brought us this dumb set of ideas is going to make our school boards more responsive to us?
Or to the special interests that pull the strings of our political parties now on either side? Just imagine if the fast food industry decides they want to keep a presence in our schools. Some campaign money to party central committees and soon school boards aren't trying to improve the nutrition of our kids school lunch, their taking bids from MickyD's or Burger King to see who offers up fat burgers to our kids at lunch.
No thanks. It ain't broke so lets not break it now.
We all knew the legislature would be vindictive in defeat, they always are. And having some of the members of the state school board stand against them would demand retaliation in their minds. By making a elected position it becomes a springboard and something that they can control by party caucuses.
I wonder what/who else they are going to go after?
Education is already politicized so, this'll just formalize what's already the case.
It's about time we stop pretending education isn't politicized already. This just removes the mask for all to see.
Get rid of the repubs! Vote them out. Or at least vote out the incumbents.
Why would we want to run the school board candidate through the convention. They only thing we would end up with would be a group of people as beholded to the right-wing lunatic fringe that no controls the process in this state.
It is time for the sane Republicans to stand up and take back their party!
Oh, oh!!!Here they come again. Like big neocon vultures they are circling overhead looking for the kill. They see it! They swoop! Oh, no!!!! The State School Board is no more!!! What nests there now? Obese vultures picking the bones of all who once dared mighty battle and are no more. These lands now only belong to the foulest, and the greediest, and they feast on chocolate cream dainties and feed their morbid chicks on crumbs. But hope comes on the horizon. See the magnificent warriors? They will overcome and behead the ugly fowls.
This is exactly why you should have an equal number of Republicans and Democrats in office to keep the balance and protect the citizens!
